Laura Worthington

Laura Worthington is a typeface designer from Washington State. After training and working as a graphic designer since the mid ‘90s, she turned her lifelong fascination with lettering and typography into a business, publishing her first typeface in 2010. She has since published more than 80 typefaces, and designed custom faces for Fortune 500 companies. Laura’s faces are primarily based on her own hand-lettering and calligraphy, a practice she continues to hone daily. Her typefaces are primarily for display, and often include a broad variety of ornaments, contextual alternates, and swash forms. Laura Worthington handles every aspect of a font’s creation, from concept and hand-lettering to digitization.

Good instructor, nice materials, well organized. I would take another course with this instructor. My problem with the course was the editing? Camera choice? I didn't go to film school so I don't know if this course was a multi-camera shoot, later edited or shot like a sporting event with a director jumping from camera to camera. Whatever the case, the beginning of most demonstrations were late on getting to the paper and brush so we missed the beginning of the demonstration and as she didn't necessarily repeat every letter or number we often just missed out. Would have been great if a more lecture based sort of course but not so good for demonstration based learning.

Nice intro to brush lettering. I wish there had been more close up's of how the instructor did each letter. She seemed to brush (pun intended) over how to do some of the letters rather quickly. Overall it was an easy way to learn more about lettering in about an hour. If you're wanting an easy crash course this is a good place to start. If you're looking for something more in-depth and guided you might want to opt for a different course.

A very thorough and engaging class. I love Laura's fonts so it was really a joy to observe her process and thought behind her lettering.

The course is fun and light. I found the exercises very useful as a way to get to know how the tools work. I also enjoy seeing the work from the students and their progress. Thank you Laura! 2019 is my year for lettering.

Wow!!! Great class, terrific presenter! Easy to follow, professional, enthusiastic, fun!!! Most CL presenters have at least one of those attributes, but not all. CL Management: have potential new presenters learn from Laura's class. Only one suggestion: Laura's constant hair interference gets really tiresome and irritating. She frequently tosses her hair over a shoulder, and moves her hair behind her shoulder with her hands, and "fights" her hair being in the way during the whole presentation. Very distracting. Laura obviously loves how her very long hair defines her personality, and I'm not suggesting that is a bad thing. But for these short presentations, perhaps Laura would consider corralling all that hair with a loose ponytail, behind her back? That said, I bought the course anyway, as she is an outstanding teacher.

I loved loved loved this class. So wish I had been there in person. Although I'm not so great with the brush lettering, Laura was so perfect in her teaching and I definitely have some ideas to put into practice.

I followed this along with this class online, and loved it! Laura covered enough info to give me enough confidence to start practicing myself at home. Thank you Laura!

I was lucky enough to be able to attend all three classes live with Laura, and with NO prior experience with lettering of any kind, I now have the knowledge to not only create my own compositions, but the confidence to do so. I highly recommend this class for anyone - from zero experience, to the advanced.

Brush Lettering is not an easy technique to master, let alone learn. Laura Worthington broke down everything into chunks of information easy to understand & follow, with many tips along the way. Stellar handouts for all 3 parts of the complete course, covering basics strokes, upper & lowercase alphabets and numerals, practice sheets (print multiples!), flourish types & flourish templates to practice & emulate, multiple flourish styles for ascenders & descenders, and finally a sheet of 'mockups' - pencil line lettering ideas to illustrate how to craft a layout for a final brush lettered piece. Not having tried this technique before, I was really happy to see I could make progress almost immediately, and I know the video & handouts are will be my resource to continue to learn & practice..

As a member of the studio audience, I can say it was a joy being surrounded by Laura's vivacious energy! She provided a plethora of good tips and tricks for lettering and throwing together a quick compositional piece. Definitely worth a purchase, the classes are quick paced so it's great to stop and practice along with us.
