Creating Advanced Masks with Chris Knight

100% recommended.

I think this is a great example of a class that would benefit from a star versus a thumbs up or down rating. Chris is obviously a master at these concepts but not necessarily the best at walking students through exactly what he does. There are many moments when he moves through 3-4 steps so fast that the Creative Live team can't keep up with the steps on screen, so you have to go back and somewhat de-construct the words and visuals to piece together what actually happened in photoshop. Bottom line, fantastic resource and process for learning the finer art of masking, but not the easiest instructor to follow,

Great tools, except the cut out tool.

So for some reason, I thought this was Create Advanced "Selection". It is not, my bad. You are not going to be shown how to select a black puppy from a black background in the middle of a thunderstorm. The content, however, is pleasantly surprising. First of all, to address the negative comments by others: 1. The downloadable action other reviewers negatively mention is really just an automation of what he is showing in class. You can easily make it yourself after reviewing the class. In fact, as far as I can tell, he makes it free and available for anyone who visits his website. 2. All the content is there. Nothing is skimmed over. Make no mistake though, channels is a little bit of an advanced topic, so it may seem that he talks a bit fast. I am pleasantly surprised to see his methods. Its not groundbreaking for pixel peepers, but it will absolutely cut down a little bit of my file sizes. If you are like me, who abuse layers and masks to do localized adjustments and end up with a 4GB .tif file, you'll appreciate the mental gymnastic he presented that i think would probably cut the file size in half. Make sure to read each lesson topics to see if this is the lesson you need, however, i have found a tiny bit of gem in every segment, so I am glad I accidentally purchased this.

Covers all the important areas with enough detail for you to figure out how to apply the techniques to your own work. Some useful tips thrown in for good measure. Decent class. Worth the price.

The email from Creative Live wanted to know how I was coming along with this "new" class and that I should really review what I'd seen of it so far. Well, I didn't buy it for immediate review but instead for a reference or resource that I could access some time in the future, so I have nothing to say about this course. You should look at what others are saying - those who have actually intended to, and probably are, watching it.

I recommend this course for the material, but.....it was so rushed that it took me a full two hours past normal run time just to constantly back up the video to catch what he was doing or saying while trying to write down notes. Other courses on here explain steps in a slow manner but he would click so fast and do stuff without telling what he was doing sometimes. I am a bit dumbfounded at the other reviews claiming that all he used was actions and that he didn't teach what he was doing. He did. Maybe it was because he was going so fast they missed it, but he did show all the steps that later on he just used an action to do because it was quicker, but the actual steps of the actions were explained. And who cares that you must go to his website to get the free actions. Plenty of freebies photographers and others offer these days are given out after giving them your email address. That is called a lead magnet folks! If you get some emails one day and don't want them, simply unsubscribe. Stop whining about it.

Great articulate instructor

To me Chris gave the right level of detail, given it's a seven segment, one hour class. It was just want I was looking for in fact. There wasn't a lot of waste because he focused on the basics, packing in a lot in a short amount of time. I found it was more than enough for me to start experimenting with complex masks on my images. I felt the negative comments were unfair, since this is a short class (and cheaper!) As to getting the actions on Chris' web site, I had no problem, and no he didn't start stalking me.

It would have been nice if the Advanced Masking Actions were posted with the class materials. It is kind of a spam to hold people hostage and make them give Chris Knight their name and email address to get what they paid for, and it would also be nice if you are going to extort personally identifying information, the least you could do is post the URL in class materials. This class was the highlight of Photoshop week for me. For a technical left-brain person like myself, Chris' presentation style is second to none. His explanations are clear, precise and to the point. The content presented is incredibly useful to anyone looking to master Photoshop.

Great info. It will take some experimentation to see how I can incorporate the concepts into my workflow (nature and architecture vice portraits). Several references to his actions throughout the course - I'm surprised they are not available for download with purchase of the course.

Chris Knight is an extraordinary digital artist and photographer. This is a rare opportunity to watch him teach his advanced editing techniques. The way he uses channel masks and blend-if modes will take your images to the next level. He has a clear, concise teaching style and you can't help but finish his class inspired!​

Chris is a superbly accomplished photographer. If you're not familiar with masking, this is a great class to add some excellent options to your toolkit for everything from grading to cleaning. For $19, a total gem.
