ABOUT ANDREW’S CLASS:

The food on your plate looks absolutely scrumptious. But somehow, when you take a picture of it, the result is less than appetizing. Great food photography isn’t just about taking a shot of a delicious dish, it’s about carefully selecting and styling your food, appropriately using natural light or studio light, and editing your images to leave viewers hungry.

World-renowned commercial photographer, food stylist, and New York Times columnist Andrew Scrivani will teach you the essentials of preparing your food before the shoot, using the right camera and lighting gear, and performing touch-ups in post-production. He’ll also give you expert advice regarding the business of food photography, so you can turn your hobby into your dream job. Special guest Shauna Ahern of the Gluten Free Girl blog and book fame will talk about food blogging, recipe writing, and growing your online audience.

This class will help you:

  • Select, prepare, and style your food so it looks professional and enticing.
  • Find and use the best gear for a food photo shoot.
  • Choose the right camera settings.
  • Create an optimal workflow and post-production process.
  • Deal with low indoor light by using inexpensive lighting equipment.

Whether you’re a seasoned bprofessional-looking for food photography tips to expand your skill set or a novice using nothing more than a smartphone, this mouth-watering workshop will provide you with the strategies, tips, and techniques needed to captivate your viewers and reach your food photography goals.

Very informative! Andrew Scrivani is an amazing artist who is very generous with all the information in this course. I feel motivated and more confident in my work. Food photography has so many layers, and Mr. Scrivani peeled it back like an onion.

This class is the best class on photography on Creative Live, and is not only about food. Mr. Scrivani is a great artist and a great instructor, who generously shared his knowledge, experience, and expertise with students.

Outstanding course! Although at first I wondered if I wanted to do a 14-hour course that my busy life would mean breaking up into smaller sections, I was so pleased at how each time I started up again it felt continuous. The instructor is really a great teacher, and his shared experiences were invaluable. I was sad when the course was finished. Thank you!

Big comprensive course about Food Fotography, Teacher/photographer is an expert in food photography. I think this course helps owners, bloggers or photographers/marketeers/creative agencies. The course does not become too technical, which is great. The course goes in all different area's preparation, the actual shoot, editing. It's complete big course and goes in detail.

This is my initial impression as I am 1/3 the way through this course. I glanced at the reviews and am a bit surprised to see only 89% so I looked at some of the negative reviews. It always strikes me as funny when people say that the work of someone who is one of the top photographers in the field doesn't "cut it". That's like me, a medical nobody, criticizing a neurosurgeon on their technique. Others complain that it's too basic but apparently failed to notice the crowd that actually physically attended the class, many were only able to use their cameras on auto mode. so obviously the class was presented at the level of the attendees. I have a lot of experience using cameras so I skipped the one truly basic lesson without feeling cheated. This is a business of aesthetics in that there are guideposts but hard rules? Not so much. He has his methods and artistic values which include a high degree of integrity (all food that he shoots could be eaten afterwards, in other words no fake stuff, no toxic substances used). I respect that. I believe this would set a good foundation for a student to build upon to create their own style, just like mastery of any art has always been accomplished throughout history. Notable errors in terms of the video and audio only, from time to time the sound level drops out quite a bit and in lesson 19 around minute 11 to 12 or so , I have to ask if the pro camera person took a break and handed it to a security guard or something? The framing is all over the place and the zooming in and out could make some need motion sickness meds. Thus far no other issues.

Andrew's class is excellent, through-and-through. The mere handful of negative reviews focus on the underwhelming results of his test shots in the class -- they're kind of missing the point. The instructor's test shots aren't about the final product, they're used to tell about the process, and boy does he do that. This course is comprehensive and concise. Scrivani talks about the ins-and-outs of the job itself (how much is styling, how much is buying the food or preparing it yourself, how much is just pure photography) and furthermore gives insight as to the nature of the business and pricing. He is clearly a strong teacher with an ear for student input, and it shows. He explains things in stages so that he doesn't 'lose' a novice student, but doesn't dumb it down so much that he's wasting the time of veteran photographers. Within each lesson (let's say he's describing the function of aperture, something most photogs already know) he's keen to pepper in little details about equipment, styling, or lighting so that there's useful information for a broad scope of the audience. The other courses, taught by Penny De Los Santos, are a joke compared to this one. De Los Santos I'm sure is a nice person, and she produces wonderful work, but her course provides little practical information and she effectively ignores her audience saying only "yeah this isn't good", making some unnamed adjustment, then "yeah okay this works" while the audience just sits there wondering what's even going on. Andrew Scrivani is very different. In one student-photographed shot, he recognizes that a more experienced pupil can easily snap his 'handheld' photo challenge, and so he throws them a curveball -- take an additional shot with a different background or styling -- and communicates clearly to the audience why he's changing the task and what the significance is. For a novice pupil, he assists her with the camera and explains to the audience the importance of getting settings right. All told, I had been unimpressed with CreativeLive's tutorial offerings until I stumbled upon this fantastic instructor. Yes, some of the information is dates (iPhone photography has taken giant leaps forward since 2013) but the practical information (lighting, budget options, business advice) is all salient and relevant. Andrew, if you by chance read these reviews, I'll say once more what was true the moment I started watching -- this course is excellent.

Fantastic class! I don't understand those few who say they are disappointed in the course, or that it's somehow 'outdated' - the principles outlined in this course are valuable no matter how technologies change through time. Mr. Scrivani's world-class credentials as a food photographer put him in the upper 1% of the genre. I learned so much from going through this course that I will need (and want) to revisit it many times in the attempt to fully retain all that he offers here. I am now seeking out more of his training and am inspired to begin attending his workshops! Absolutely recommend! 5 stars!!

    Most informative class, thank you!

  • Kalissa T. Jan 28, 2018

This course shares great knowledge and information on food photography for people interested in doing this as a profession or as a hobby. I always had a curiosity to learn more about the topic because I love cooking and I love photography, but I had no idea about what it entailed. I think Andrew does a great job in covering the details of what food photography is all about for people who are new to it. He covers all the basics, and gives a very good foundation for students to take the next step (either to build a business or just have fun). Andrew comes across very humble, friendly and motivating which makes watching the videos and learning much more enjoyable and less intimidating.

  • Susanti C. Jan 6, 2018

Love it ! It explain all the necessary aspects - from preparation till the real photo is taken.

  • Randy N. Dec 29, 2017

Really enjoyed the course. I took a fair amount away from it, even with lots of talking ... talking through the set-ups and rational.

  • stephen F. Dec 28, 2017

The content is incredibly inspirational. The platform, however, leaves much to be desired. The video keeps pausing while the audio continues, and the cueing of the next class, absolutely never works for me on any occasion. You can't present essentially great content this way and expect people to be happy that they've paid for it. Let's face it, the value of this is that all the information is expressed in one place. But we need to be honest; all of this is available on Youtube for free. You just need to look for it. This is supposed to be a paid alternative to hassle of cutting out the middleman (google). Honestly, the hassle of continually pausing video and randomly cueing classes is, frankly, bullshit. Get your delivery platform sorted.

Andrew is a wonderful teacher. Highly recommend this class as well as his tabletop photography course. Well worth the investment! Loaded with information.

  • Daphne P. Sep 29, 2017

Amazing course! Totally recommend it! A lot of information, seeing hands on work and critiques, business, art, in other words a very complete course. Andrew is an amazing photographer AND teacher.

  • John K. Jun 12, 2017

Clearly, as a consummate artist and teacher, Andrew has whole reserves of skills and experience these lectures haven't tapped. We learn about the rewards as well as the trials of food photography and we learn it from a master - with lessons which give us the instruction and motivation to proceed on our own. Amazing course.

  • Joseph T. Mar 17, 2017

I just completed watching this, yes it was a few yrs ago but all of the content is appropriate for today also. Andrew is an amazing instructor and am someone who is starting out in food photography(been doing video for years, and did photography back in the dark ages known as the 1970s), this was everything you need to know to start a new endeavor. I really loved this quote from Andrew: We, as artists are creating from our heart, we are creating from our mind. These are the things that are very, very personal for artists. We feel intimately connected to the things we create." So if you've not bought this course and want to jump into food photography, go and buy it now.

This course Is by far my favorite CL class. Andrew's teaching style is straight forward, sincere and great for beginner as well as experienced food photographer. I've watched this over and over and gain something new every time. Thanks Andrew.

Hands down one of the best courses I've taken on CL. Andrew has a great personality and communication style. The class covers food styling, props, gear, basic lighting, camera technique, and a range of invaluable advice on business practices and copyright. As someone who has enjoyed a successful career in a different line of creative work, I was happy to hear him articulate the basic principles I've carried into my client relations and negotiations. Highly recommended!

  • Lisa C. Oct 3, 2016

It's a great class for foodies and photographers. I am a mommy or lifestyle blogger and this class has made my food photography look more professional! Cheek out my review at http://couponsahmiam.blogspot.com/2016/10/creative-live-food-photography-workshop.html

  • E. Jun 28, 2016

I found that Andrew did a very good job at showing me the difference between and ordinary picture of food and what color and lighting can do to make a food item really stand out. There is a way to photograph even the most ordinary food item and make it really stand out. If you are in doubt, just watch the first portion of the video class and you will absolutely know that you are in the right place at the right time!

  • Nawal H. Jun 27, 2016

Deliciously beautiful, fun to watch and fun to learn, worth every Dinar, I love the two way conversation between the teacher and the students, specially the practice part, thank you for this class, amazing :-)

  • Y. Jun 25, 2016

I was mostly interested in business side, and also the creative side of arranging a table for shooting. Both parts delivered more that I expected to receive from them so I am very pleased I went through this class. If you are a food blogger or interested in food photography I would suggest that you start with this class :)
