“The best picture is your next picture. If you start to believe that you've already shot your best picture or you start patting yourself on the back at any level, you might as well hang it up.” Joe McNally
Learn from an award-winning, 30-year photography veteran.
Meet Joe McNally, known world-wide as one of the top, technically excellent photographers of his generation. His clients have included FedEx, Sony, ESPN, Adidas, and Land’s End; and his work has been featured in publications such as National Geographic, LIFE, and Sports Illustrated.
The legendary and down-to-earth Joe will show you how to create stories with light and harness the skills every photographer needs for success.
Capture pictures that resonate
Getting clients to trust your creative vision and technical skill takes hard work and time to develop. You need to prove that you're not only passionate but that you've got the skills to pull off an amazing photo, no matter the scenario with your mastery of tools and control of light.

Joe McNally knows firsthand that you can’t settle for nice pictures to make it in this business. Joe and his team opened the doors to their business to us and answered so many questions about the nuts and bolts of their inner workings. This class is a must have for every photographer.” Tania
Don’t settle for good enough. Grow your confidence by gaining the knowledge and skills to create or style photos that resonate. With the technical know-how and professionalism, you CAN shoot in any scenario for any client, and make the leap to becoming a full-time photographer.
Very interesting presentation. Good emphasis on people skills and relationships and the work of being a self employed businessman, in addition to the technical stuff. Also, it's nice to see Joe work and get a feel for his personality, I've been a fan of his for a long time. I used to work on the team at Eastman Kodak that processed his rolls of Kodachrome an Ektachrome for National Geographic.
Good course and McNally certainly is a great photographer. IMHO, I do think he might consider being a little more concise, and therefore brief, in making points or giving rather long examples. That said, I'm the kind of person that, when I ask you what time it is, just tell me the time; don't tell me how to build a watch.
This was a great course. One that I have referred back to again and again because there are a lot of valuable tips and techniques. Thanks!
Well, this course should be a classic. The professionalism of the crew, the wise words, the human touch, the respect, the tips and tricks. Well done, and it never gets boring!
Thank you - this was great.
It was very nice! Thanks Joe!
What is there to say, this is a master at work. I feel like I owe Joe a hundred lunches for the information I’ve learned from him and used in jobs through the years. Personally I relate to his slightly self-deprecating style quite well. Joe’s a confident, supremely knowledgeable and incredibly experienced photographer who doesn’t need to wear that on his sleeve to get the point across. He is also clearly a great leader who has built a terrific team. I snap up everything of Joe’s I can find and use it as a library, where every time you watch you take away something new. Thanks Joe, you’re a legend and good on Creative Live for offering this wonderful and beautifully curated course.
I bought this class because after seeing Joe's photos on his website I wanted to see his workflow. This is a must see course for someone who wants to understand more about on location photographic lighting, image building, composition and a bit of behind the scenes processes. Joe's creativity and his team's efficiency is amazing. Thank you for all of you creating this awesome course!
Awesome course! Joe is an entertaining, incredibly knowledgable teacher who lives and breathes photography. I learned so much from watching him work through the shoots.
I think it was a great course, I got a lot out of it.
This was was the one image I just did not like. It really didnt convince me as a viewer. In my opinion.
Joe's reputation speaks for itself. You can't argue with decades of success. I really enjoyed this class, opening a window into Joe's creative thought process. He doesn't tell us "how," since no formula works in all situations. He shares a real-life journey as images unfold. Great demonstration of teamwork as well. One of my favorite courses purchased, and I own close to 200.
Great course and splendid way of covering various tricky situations.
I am not being critical...just trying to understand...in the beginning of the video he said he had 10 minutes to shoot the actress...this has taken over 40 minutes so far....
Interesting info...Calling your model "sweet" is so old school and cringey though...They have names, just use them? You wouldn't call Callie "Sweet".
I’m so glad I bought this course. Joe has so much knowledge In many areas to do with photography. Learn from the master. Thanks Joe!
It is all about the passion. This is a conversation with a heart, without leaving the goods (the tech stuff taught with a joy like nobody's business). Joe is the most committed photographer; he gives a meaning to the craft: it is all about the content, with the craft in service of the story. To me, he is like the Scorsese of photographers; the way he refers to light, it´s contagious. You will not find a human light seeker like him. The best. I can't praise this class enough.
Take this class. You will have no regrets.
Amazing sharing of ideas and knowledge. This class got me right at the intro. Joe explained in an understandable way all the concepts and ideas I already believed in. The fact that photography is a way of story telling where there are three principal elements, light and shadow closely related and the third element of attitude. That is exactly what I attempt to convey in my book "Light, Shadows and Attitude"
Joe is one of the best. He is amazing with light and has a great personality which makes his classes fun to watch. I always learn something from his classes.
This is the best Creative Live course I have taken so far. I received this course at no cost in exchange for providing a review. The course focuses on many aspects of photography with emphasis on combining ambient and supplemental lighting sources. Any aspiring photographer will learn a great deal from watching Joe go through each step of his routine as he creates exceptional photos. Please see the full review on my blog, https://jeff-simon.format.com/blog/lighting-logistics-and-strategies-for-a-life-in-photography-my-review
That was great course but I was expecting a bit more from it. Did not learn that much from it and dont know if I could recommend it for this price. Still have to say that Joe is a legend of photography
PHENOMENAL CLASS.. The portion with group shots and the one on one with Lynn were EXCELLENT.. It was the most honest depiction of Business Photography I ever seen.
Joe knows light and how to control it! He's as comfortable with Profoto and Elinchrom strobes as he is with speedlights. Having a course like this is an incredible opportuinty to gain some of his knowledge and philosophy about lighting, photography and what it's like being a professional photographer. More please!
Fantastic course and aptly named as it really does cover that breadth of topics, and very well at that! It was incredibly helpful to watch Joe go through the process of building various shots from the ground up - starting from natural light in aperture priority and adding speedlights and larger flash to get the look he's going for. I highly recommend this class!
