Fundamentals of Photography

Through-the-lens flash (TTL) is a powerful tool for every successful photographer—but it’s also an intimidating system if you don’t know how to use it correctly. Join creativeLIVE for a two-day workshop on simple, effective ways for using TTL and off camera flash to create studio lighting in any environment.
Veteran photographers Mike Fulton and Cody Clinton will teach you what TTL is, how a wireless flash works, and walk you through a wide variety of flash techniques. After two days of hands-on instruction, you’ll understand the science of metered light, how to troubleshoot both manual and TTL metering, and the basic concepts of “flash placement.”
This course will equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to elevate your on-location photography skills, transforming every location into a studio.
As an experienced photographer who loves using flash outdoors but has only ever shot in manual mode I found this course to be very helpful. The instructors use the speed lights without modifiers which shows the effect of exposure and angle placement in a brutally honest unfiltered way which is really helpful to learn the process rather than shooting artistic, stylized images. It could have probably been condensed into a slightly shorter course but overall it is very informative.
Last week I had my first outdoor session with a small musical group. Was small enough I could light it with one flash and doing it in ETTL was a breeze. Before I took this course I would have spent a lot more time in the session messing with my settings and reshooting. I highly recommend this class if you shoot outdoors.
This approach has helped me expand my creative lighting skills a great deal. While I am far from being able to produce work at the level of the instructors, I've had some interesting results. It is an approach that takes some understanding of your equipment, the principles of exposure, metering and flash compensation, but once you get comfortable with the fundamentals, it can be a lot of fun. One note, it will take a partner to be most effective with this technique.
So far I am liking this class. I’m sort of liking the lessons with the model and students are taking turns with the flash effects...BUT they’re not showing all the photos after-capture so that we, that are watching, can see what happens as the light is changed. One photo finally came up but it was from the wrong shot!
I would recommend if you are a true beginner at TTL. They do a good job exposing everything about TTL. However, the class could be organized a bit better. There is a LOT of talking in comparison with the substance
Without a doubt, this class is useful but could be condensed into half an hour: underexpose your subject and then add "flash compensation to taste". That is it. Got it. Was interesting to see that time after time Mike and Cody told us that it wasn't necessary to buy Flash Poppers or any radio kit. To be honest, I'm an amateur. I bought 2x430EXIII & ST-E3-RT for half price on eBay, set flash and exposure comp to -1 and 0 and got a great shot. No idea why Mike and Cody don't recommend Canon radio transmitters. They are flawless and superb. And guys, please get your wives/girlfriends to buy you new shirts!
Worth every penny if you know nothing about using speedlights properly. You leave armed with knowledge and easy-to-use techniques. Nice work!
Loved to class. I ordered the class when it was new out and have watched it a few times to refresh my mind, I will keep[ this course and re view it from time to time.
Great experience and partially because of toned down Mike. I heard very few utterance of the word “idiot”. It is apparent that Mike loves to talk and is in a habit of repeating same thing again and again but I did see a better Mike and much useful content, all credit goes to you sir. Finally, a suggestion let Code talk when he holds the fort. He being behind the camera should get a chance to describe his vision. All in all very useful course and well executed. Thanks Mike & Code.
There seems to be one glaring error in the whole of this class. The instructors say that their method works equally on Canon, Nikon and other systems. I was so excited when I heard this because I have been battling TTL exposure compensation in my Nikon CLS system. Alas, their method works for Canon, but not Nikon. That is because, in a Nikon body, when you adjust camera EC it overrides any flash EC. In Canon, the settings are independent, just as they demonstrate. When you are in Av mode, changing camera EC does not affect flash output. And vice versa. Changing flash EC does not affect background exposure. But in Nikon, in A mode? Nyet. It's a circus. The only way to leave background or ambient exposure unaffected is to switch to Manual. Which defeats the whole purpose of their method. Supposedly you can make the Two EC's independent of each other with the e4 setting in the Shooting menu. But it simply doesn't work. I am so disappointed because I really thought they had come up with something brilliant. I hope one of the instructors is still around and will chime in and explain to me that I am in fact doing something wrong. I would love that.
Not a good class for someone just wanting to get the basics, disappointing in that respect Really wish this was more clear to me as I could have spent my $ on a different class
I watched this class a few years ago when I was looking to understand TTL and improve my photography. I thought Mike and Cody worked very well together as a team to explain the topic. They each had something to add, but both broke it down so that it was easy to understand. I immediately started implementing their methods. It changed the way I shot my photos and improved them a lot. I enjoyed the class and recommend it to anyone wanting to learn about TTL.
[From intermediate hobbiest with moderate number of paid shoots]. I took the class because I knew nothing more about flash photography than slapping the flash on top of the camera, turning it on, and taking my chances. I could not have purchased a better class. Mike and Cody covered so much in such a clear way and with such great examples. Especially helpful are the shooting sessions where they work through the lighting situations, incorporating what is possible to do and what the client might want. I so appreciate their willingness to share what they do and how they do it. I now know some direction to take and what I need to acquire minimally to apply this to my work. Thank you!
What a phenomenal class. I have learned so much. Not only did I learn how to master TTL but I feel confident in the science behind it. This allows for great on-the-spot problem solving. Great job, guys! Thanks for a great - and fun - class.
This is by far the best class I have ever taken. Mike and Cody talked about everything I wanted to know. They are truly blessed with a talent and I'm happy I found this class.
Cody and Mike are very passionate instructors, they give 100 % + to make sure no detail is missed. I purchased this course and love it. I stayed up way too late last night watching it, I just could not make myself hit the stop button. They work together so well, what one does not tell you the other does. I have never understood TTL but after watching Cody and Mike I am for the first time "getting it". For anyone out there on the fence about buying this course all I can say is if you need help understanding flash at any level BUY THIS COURSE NOW.Creative Live , please invite this two professionals back.
Having watched countless lame tutorials online (well, enough of each to recognize the need to quit watching), I was surprised by the usefulness of the information that was simply, clearly explained and demonstrated by this 2-man teaching team. I came away with a clear understanding of the "why" back of the "how" in adding speedlights to natural light, and how TTL enters into that formula. It has already taken my portraits shot in the last 24 hours to a new level. I can't say enough about the huge value that Creative Live brings to the photography community.
Very informative. Good break down, and was very helpful in understanding what is going on...thus being able to actually use TTL correctly. Great class!
I took this course when A wo rk today, where I use photography every day for Marketing. This course is broken down in easy to understand language, with incredibly detailed pdf downloads. I cant wait until tomorroe's class, and yes, I bought the course! Thank you!! Vickie Siculiano, Wayne, NJ
