Everyone’s got a story to tell. Some are funny. Some are inspiring. Others are tragic. But no matter how compelling your story might seem, it won’t resonate with readers unless you’re able to effectively translate your concept onto the page.

Celebrated journalist, novelist and memoirist Joyce Maynard will give you the tools you need to transform your brilliant idea into an absorbing memoir that readers won’t be able to put down.

Maynard will begin by walking you through the process of identifying your story and how best to tell it. She’ll then help you develop your story through language, story structure, dramatic tension, dialogue, description and editing. Finally, she’ll address the challenges of the writing life such as how to create a productive practice, design a comfortable writing space, deal with rejection and find an audience.

In this class, you’ll learn how to:

  • Understand the difference between telling what happened and exploring your journey.
  • Figure out what to include in your story and what to cut out.
  • Decide on a point of view, a point of entry and a structure.
  • Get over your fears of revealing embarrassing truths about yourself.
  • Stop worrying about being judged.
  • Deal with loneliness and find your tribe.
  • Develop the arc of a sentence, a paragraph and a story.
  • Listen to the sound and rhythm of your sentences.

What a great class! So much packed into the lessons. Some of her insights and advice have changed my mindset toward my writing, and I’m re-energized and excited to begin. While the class is definitely geared for memoir writers or personal essayists, I think there’s value for writers of other genres as well. I’ll be looking for more by Joyce Maynard in the future!

I've been working on a memoir for a while now, and this course reinvigorated my passion for this project. Her advice is practical and effective. I truly appreciate her authenticity and vulnerability. I highly recommend this course for writers of every level, from amateur to professional.

This was a great course; I highly recommend it. Laughed at parts, opened my mind to parts. Parts of it punched me in the gut. I have not heard of her before- and have added her books to my to-read list. Thank you for giving so much of yourself in this class, Joyce. I look forward to reading more of your work.

I am blown away by how much I've learned from you, and how warmly and joyfully you've imparted your wisdom, your skills as a writer and your own beautiful humanity. I am so grateful for this experience. You are not only a gifted storyteller, but a truly gifted teacher, and a delightful, inspiring human being. I hope to learn from you in person in Lake Atitlan at some point in the future.

Wow, What an amazing inspiration you are Joyce Maynard. Thank you from the depths of my heart for your honesty, your sharing and your teachings. I wanted to hug you at the end of this and there was sadness that it was coming to an end. I have looked forward to the lessons each time. Not only are you teaching me to write my story but I feel like I just made a long term friend. I am now subscribed to your mailing list needless to say and am throwing out all of my writing so far. The real work starts now. Thank you again with Love Sadie

  • Melanie M. Dec 31, 2019

I am so glad I invested my time and money into this course! I am now going forward with confidence finishing and publishing my memoir in 2020!

  • SuZett E. Nov 26, 2019

Great class. I have spent most of my life writing - technical books, complex proposals, and other very detailed documentation. I am a very competent writer, but have never done memoir/biographical/personal writing. I have wanted to write a memoir, but despite being a professional writer, did not know how to approach this particular genre. What I liked most about this class was the the "container" approach and telling one's own story, rather than including the supposed thoughts and stories of others. This clarified my thinking. I recommend the class.

  • X. Oct 23, 2019

This was great - am most interested in writing fiction but feel many of the insights, tips and techniques will also apply and add depth and reality to this genre, especially when writing from first-person. While a valuable program in many ways - would have loved it for Joyce's 'My Sharona' story alone!

  • Yana E. Oct 16, 2019

fantastic course. very honest and deep. thank you for sharing Joyce Maynard !!! wow.

  • D U. Sep 20, 2019

I just finished this course and am sitting here, reflecting and grateful. It's the interwoven honesty-meets-credibility that makes this a worthwhile investment. Joyce speaks from experience, years, hindsight, and goals. It would be an honour to meet her and learn more.

  • Maria B. Aug 12, 2019

This class is a gem and worth far more than its listed price. Not only Joyce Maynard leads with sensitivity, heart, and humor; she delivers her knowledge sincerely. I was on the brink of tears many times during the class, it touched me how she was always able to find that part of each story that resonated deeply. Thank you Ms. Maynard for teaching this class and sharing your wisdom. I learned about much more than writing.

  • Tanya K. May 9, 2019

I've been told I need to write my story and I've never seen myself actually writing it. Well, that is until now. Joyce made it feel like a more obtainable task.

  • W. Jan 1, 2019

I love this course. It paid for itself after 4 lessons. It's like a movie, a motivational talk and a friend sharing her heart lifting and breaking moments and I am learning so much.

  • Margaret L. Dec 9, 2018

I've taken Joyce's class on writing the personal essay. I decided to take this course because I wanted something more comprehensive. I made right choice. The other class felt more inspirational and dealt with pulling together your container stories and the common thread. This course was more all-purpose whether you want to write a personal essay, or a memoir. This course contained sections about the mechanics of these types of creative nonfiction.

  • Ming H. Oct 4, 2018

This was an awesome course. Thoroughly enjoyed it and learnt a lot from the open sharing and dissection of some of the essays.

  • Tabetha H. Aug 18, 2018

I don't think I have ever been so touched, so inspired, so motivated to write a memoir ... Joyce's lectures are filled with actionable info, from diagraming sentences (mind blown here) to breaking down big ideas into workable "containers." Her passionate way of teaching sparks something so deep in me. Astoundingly useful.

  • Debbie A. Aug 12, 2018

Fabulous course with some refreshing suggestions and ideas. Would definitely do another with her.
