Fundamentals of Photography
John Greengo
learn outdoor and scenic composition techniques from a master.
Spend a day gleaning insight from a nature photographer with five decades of experience shooting on every continent, Art Wolfe. This special one-day class includes two 90-minute discussions, 90 minutes of student critiques, and three episodes of Art's documentary series Travels to the Edge.
Go beyond basic nature photography tips and dig into the psychology of nature photography and what takes an image from a snapshot to fine art. Learn to find your inspiration, break the rules and see the story inside grand landscapes. This is not a class for taking textbook plain nature photography from a boring list of landscape photography tips—it's a class designed to help you find your own unique voice to capture your own fine art prints of landscapes, wildlife, and culture.
After this class, you'll have the confidence to experiment, to work for the shot, and to capture the story in nature photography.
Art Wolfe is a nature and conservation photographer with a background in fine art and painting, a start which continues to influence his work to this day. Often described as a "prolific" nature and wildlife photographer, Art has published more than 80 books of photographs, along with images appearing in major publications such as National Geographic Magazine, Smithsonian, Audubon, and more. Art has received numerous awards, including Nature's Best Photographer of the Year. He also leads a documentary television series Travel to the Edge. When he's not traveling nine months out of the year (including leading photography tours), he's teaching and working with his stock agency and production company in Seattle.
I was just glued to the screen. Outstanding is one word for the valuable sharing of Art's experiences. Quality of the lessons in Creative Live is the best out there and the layout is extra ordinary.
It isn't the best online course I've ever done as it didn't actually make me do anything. However, I did put together a 20 page PowerPoint so I had something to look back on, and in doing so found out that I had learnt a lot of useful things. I have just enrolled in another of Art's courses because as an art photographer doing the type of art photography I admire, he can't be beaten.
I have going through the second video and I like this lecturer - Art Wolfe and the course. I like his photos. It is great I am getting a lot inspirational ideas. Many thanks
a great course, some of the best photos i ever seen from an amazing photographer, now when i take a photo i now look at whole frame and also look to see where i can i also crop
So inspiring so beautiful very nice but need to discuss camera aperture and shatter its is also beginner landscape photographer thx
So inspiring, i couldn't stop watching!
While the photos were stunning and Mr. Wolfe is obviously a world class photographer, I did not find this course all that useful as a means to take better pictures. This course is more of a showcase of his work, than a truly instructional course. The first two lessons were interesting and gave an insight into the instructors approach to photography. The third lesson had nothing to do with nature photography, unless you define nude bodies as nature. The best part of the course was about composition and how to improve that aspect of photography. The last three lessons were three travelogues. If you are interested in getting some technical instruction on how to take better nature photographs, this may not be the course for you.
I was, kind of, addicted to this class. I did see some critiques that a lot of this is not about nature photography. I agree, partially, Painted bodies are a part of nature, and the way that Art has woven those into the lessons, make those images all about seeing. It is a brilliant class, in the sense that he teaches you how to tap into your passion, how to see, how to crop, and how to keep your energy and enthusiasm alive through the years of doing photography. His love for, and feel for nature, is evident. The manner in which he interacts with the class is joyful indeed. This is an addictive tutorial
One thing I love about this class is Art Wolfe shares the way he approaches a scene and what his thought process is. The lens and composition portion helped me take my photography to the next level. I also learned so much from listening to him critique photos. Learning from one of the worlds best photographers. Awesome stuff!
An interesting and worthwhile class but a lot of it is NOT nature photography. Lessons 1 & 2 are more Art Wolfe biography. Lesson 3 is an indoor shoot of naked, painted bodies. Lessons 10, 11, and 12 are just rebroadcasts of Travels to the Edge and much of 10 & 11 are on culture, not nature.
This course is gold in improving composition. I'm on holidays at the moment and spent a few hours with amazing light and amazing subject and excellent equipment... but I still just could not get a shot that really captured what I wanted. Art helped me think about the subject differently and get some shots that I really like. The only negative was I don't enjoy abstract quite as much as Art but it was still interesting.
An amazing course. After suggestions as to what you should be getting when you go into the field, watch three episodes of "Traveling to the Edge" to see it put into practice. Crop all your old photos, or just toss them. There's probably too much sky (also coined by Gary Hart in his workshops), the horizon is in the center, or you don't have a good foreground object--that you are not close enough to.
Having been a fan of Art's for nearly a decade (AND watched "Travels" on public broadcasting), I decided that I needed to continue study with this great master. Will watch all 12 of these lessons over time, and then figure out what else I can watch, read, or attend. A thousand thanks.
Hello Art Wolfe, I am very happy to watch your lectures and to learn so much about photography in a such a short time. You speak in a normal and understandable way so a non-prof is going to get you easily. I wished I have seen it earlier and learnt all so to achieve a higher level in photos shooting. Your philosophy and style in taking pictures have turned my perspectives for photography upside down in a good way. Have you got an idea to make a photo-school where new talents are going to develop their skills and educate them so to pass over your knowledge and talent to other people? Thank you very much again for the coherent lecture and the interesting invitation to your world of photography. Regards from Bulgaria, Maria Mitkova
Art has packed into this class not only amazing images he has captured during his storied career, but also insight to where that experience has lead him amid a sea of photographers. He ends the session with a hands on review of student work in LightRoom.
WOW! Thoroughly enjoyed this class..
Wow! A golden opportunity to observe a real master at work. I found the class compelling and informative and the extracts from Travels to the Edge are simply stunning. Very worthwhile class - highly recommended.
Art Wolfe is a witty, thoughtful and intelligent presenter with a body of work that is unparalleled. His critiques of student work was patient and respectful while getting his points across. Heavy focus on composition, especially the importance of the relationship of horizon, sky and subject. Highly recommended.
This my first opportunity viewing this video class and I must say Art Wolfe has a perfect photographic eye that he creates to an art. I myself am interested in concert photography and I am so new to the hobby and had some good feedback on a lot of my shots. Nature photography is a great way to expand the photography horizon.
Brilliant speaker - passionate, entertaining and full of useful expert advice. Lots of beautiful images and practical examples.
Absolutely loved this course - looking forward to seeing more.
Great class by Art Wolfe! It is always a treat to learn from him and gain new knowledge of a wonderful craft. Having this class to enjoy repeatedly at home is a treasure.

An amazing class with an exemplary teacher and artist. I'm learning so much and glad I purchased this class, so I can go back and watch again, and again. Love his sense of humour too. Thanks Creative Live!
A great opportunity to see a master commenting on his work!
