Outdoor photography celebrates the varied and stunning landscapes of the natural world – in this unique course you will learn composition and shooting techniques for getting beautiful outdoor shots.

Shooting and teaching from two of the world’s most pristine parks, Olympic National Park and Mt. Rainier National Park, award-winning photographer Ian Shive will teach you new ways to create outdoor photographs that are powerful, captivating and fresh. You'll explore key elements of great outdoor photography including: composition, working a scene, selecting exposure, using filters to manage natural light, and scouting a great location. Then you'll learn how to put it all together to tell a story in a single image or series. After spending time in the field, Ian will move into the studio and present on the equally important tasks of managing and editing your work from the field.

Ian will show you how to capture images that are both technically and emotionally engaging. Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to learn how to document the beauty of the great outdoors, in camera.

I'm about 2/3 through this class and I can't say enough good things about it. Ian Shive is a great teacher. So much fantastic and useful information. Highly recommend this class! I think it's time for another class by Shive -- Night Photography maybe please?!

Ian Shive is an amazing teacher. You will be hard pressed to find one class with more information on how to be a landscape photographer than this one. Everything is covered: from scouting locations, gear, camera settings, composition, photo critiques, to how to seek out revenue streams from magazine assignments and stock photography. The bonus materials add even more detail. If you are serious about landscape photography, this is the class for you.

Great insight into the daily activities of a professional photographer at work. Ian does a good job explaining his process, from planning, shooting, pre-editing, maintaining and his final steps before delivering his product. If you are looking for Photoshop/Lightroom editing tips or details, this is not the class for you. If you are wanting to start with nature photography, you will get some great tips.

Still one of my favorite classes at Creative Live, I have watched it several times and it just inspires me to get out and capture something. I love that he shows the frustrations of the weather and to look for other opportunities you might have missed.

  • julie C. Apr 18, 2017

Fantastic instructor, interesting, informative, visually stunning, but mostly... very very helpful and informative. Thank you!

  • Janet D. Jun 26, 2016

Really enjoyed this class. I like that a lot of it was shot in the field so you get to watch Ian work with real world situations...and you get to see that things don't always go perfectly. Lots of great information. I know I'll watch it again and pick up even more tips!

  • Pierre C. Jun 24, 2016

Excellent class for beginners to experts. I really like the way every step is explained, and the way Ian teaches directly in the field. I like that he explain when, why and how to use the different filters. Very good course to put in your collection to watch over and over.

  • Gigi E. Jun 24, 2016

This class is so well done. If you want to learn how to make stock images of beautiful places buy this class.

  • M. Apr 21, 2016

Are you guys serious? looks like any crappy free youtube video on landscape photography out there. amateurish looking, cheesy over saturated mickey mouse colors with overcooked and bad post treatment. TERRIBLE quality. This is what new photogs usually do when they play with every slider in PS or LR. and you claim you feature "world class" photographers??? Cumon man... you should KNOW better. Get us QUALITY.

  • Renee K. Apr 21, 2016

I'm sure it is a great course, but I could only watch about 10 min. of it before his constant use of "Umm" started grating on my nerves. Seriously. like um, every, um other um word.

  • Glenn B. Feb 21, 2015

I'm a 75 yr. old photography hobbyist and have been glued to the screen watching, listening, and learning from Ian! He's the most inspirational photographer ever! Thank you so much!

This was my first course I've paid for and it was worth every penny. After watching the first few hours I ended up buying the course and couldn't be happier. Ian gave me real insight, on the go, in a real outdoor environment. Seeing how things were done in real time were a huge help. Would recommend this course a thousand times over!

    Outstanding class!!

  • Julie G. Sep 7, 2014

I really enjoyed this class. Ian did a great job of letting us see what a week in the life of a full time nature/landscape photographer would be. He covers so many topics in these 3 days. I have watched it through once and soon I will be going through it a second time to take notes for future reference. Amazing value.

  • U. Sep 7, 2014

I was only able to watch portions of each day's class, but learned so much in those moments, I bought the class so I can refer to it again and again. I just returned from the Grand Canyon, and Ian's words were constantly in the back of my head. "Don't judge the photo by what you see on the monitor. Seek light balance. You are gathering information, Photoshop will create the color tones you want. Go for light and composition." It was like he was standing behind me, coaching me. This was a great course. I will refer to it again and again.

Creative live follower. I truly enjoyed watching Ian Shive and all the struggles one can go through in the out door environment. I agree with a previous post it all makes Ian very relatable. To actually have Ian show us that it isn't always the big Icons of the world (which I would love to photograph) but it is also the smaller elements in the surrounding areas that can be just as beautiful. I enjoyed it and also bought it to rewatch many a times. Thank you creative live and Ian Shive.

Fabulous course - info for beginners to advanced photographers. So jammed packed with tips and methods of approaching nature photography, one viewing does not do it justice. Together with the bonus materials, this course was well worth investing both time and money.

  • U. Sep 5, 2014

I started to get into photography using the point-and-shoot camera and DSLR camera 2 years ago. My goal is to capture the beauty of nature around my neighborhood and parks we visit on vacations. I watched the full three day class and it is excellent. I learned all aspects involved in the end-to-end process to create a memorable pictures that tell the stories/experiences and tips. It's a great class for all levels of photographers and many thanks to Ian Shive to share his expertise and experiences.

Too bad that Ian doesn't offer any workshops. I learned a lot in his presentation and practiced them right away in Mt. Rainier Np hiking to Comet Falls and Tolmie Peak. There is such a wealth of information that it will take some time to "digest" it wholly.

  • B. Sep 5, 2014

This was the best course I have seen on Creative Live! There was so much information that I bought the course, to view it over and over. I especially appreciate the fact that he showed how to choose a final photo and why. For me, that was the most important thing I learned. It was also refreshing to see that a lot of his shots were not "perfect" the first try. He stressed "working" the area and that was a valuable piece of advice. The vertical shot reminder was also something I appreciate. Any class Ian gives, I will sign up. Thank you for having him.

  • Leanne C. Sep 5, 2014

Fantastic to see another course outside the Creative Live Studio and something that has nothing to do with portrait photography. Ian was fantastic, and now when I go out to take photos there are things he said in my head, they will forever influence the way I do landscape photography, actually, perhaps most forms of photography, it was brilliant. Thank you Ian Shive, and thank you Creative Live for giving someone from Australia the opportunity to go to one of his workshops.

  • Kirk N. Sep 5, 2014

This class gave me more than I could possibly absorb in one sitting. I purchased the class so I can refer back to it. The presentation was excellent. Ian did a great job of showing the ins and outs of photography both for technique and creativity. His photos are stunning. Thank you for the presentation.

  • Judy S. Sep 5, 2014

I own a LOT of CL courses, and this is totally the best one yet. I loved the "workshop" feel by shooting live, in the outdoors. There was so much practical information that Ian presented I know I'll be watching it over and over again. Even when things weren't going according to plan, Ian was so comfortable, and explained how he worked through many adverse situations. Awesome course - thanks Ian and Creative Live!!!!!

  • mic W. Sep 3, 2014

First of all can i add my congratulations to the whole Creativelive team for such a good job , especially the film crew. Big thanks to Ian for such engaging sessions in the field -i felt i was there with him -and his ongoing commentary was invaluable. Lastly, i could have done without all the business stuff at the end (and also the poor skype link ) (and critiques do get to be a bit repetitive dont they...). See you next time guys...

I'm a hobbyist, although I did shoot some photos for a weekly US Army newspaper before my retirement from civil service. My training was a two-week segment during a nine-week course the Army provided me and help from coworkers. I liked that Ian Shive did not just stand at a lectern and spout out information. He got into the field, showed us how he composed his shots, his results and told us why something worked or didn't work. Some of his information was review for me, some was a reminder of things I've forgotten and some was new. Now that I'm retired, I have time to go out and shoot when and where I want and work on different settings on my camera. If there was just one thing I tuned out on, it would be the Photoshop segment. I use a different software. Excellent course with great content and great presentation. I will be visiting Denali National Park next week and hope to put some of his tips to work. Thank you.
