Get out of the studio, and make the most of your portrait photography by combining strobe and natural light. Joel Grimes breaks down strobe lighting through 11 different lighting setups, including shooting at a boxing gym, a local park, in direct sunlight on the roof and in the studio, so that you can go out on location and capture great images.
Join Joel for this class as he goes through the basics of strobe lighting basics and how to use strobes to overpower the sun. Once you learn the essentials of strobes, he will show you techniques on:
  • How to use a neutral density filter and the combination of ambient and strobe lighting, to achieve a shallow depth of field.
  • How to achieve an HDR 32-bit depth final image with ISO bracketing
  • How to create a textured background for a character portrait and stitch it in Adobe Photoshop
Joel is an experienced commercial portrait photographer and a member of the Canon Explorer of Light team. Learn how to create iconic images of your own as Joel shares his extensive experience in the lighting world.

I'm already a photographer but I've learned so so much watching the lessons of Joel Grimm. Thank you for all the tips that you gave throughout this course and also for your energy ! Really like it !

I like Joel's technical approach. After watching this course I bought my own CamRanger, and often I will set the f/stop and/or shutter speed to capture images, not being a fan of "grain". in my images. I learned alot from Joel, but think sometimes he could have demonstrated a little more while or instead of talking.

I own a few more tutorials of Joel and I follow and admire him all the time. I've been waiting to find a tutorial of him doing his style on location because this is what I normally do, I almost never shoot in studio. So that course is exactly what I wanted, I learned and enjoyed a lot. The only down side for me is that, he is editing only 2-3 pictures at the end and they are only male models, so no beauty retouching. I was expecting to get retouching section from all the shootings covered in the course.

As Joel says, a light meter can't make creative / artistic decisions for you. He chooses not to use light meters because that's not his style, he's an artist not a machine operator. Don't bash people for being different from you please. He demonstrates how to get his style of lighting the way that he attains it. If you want a light meter to tell you how to be a photographer, this class is not for you. If you're an artist wanting to see how an amazing artist creates his art and developed his craft, you will probably enjoy this class.

I do not recommend this course because he fills up the time with saying what he is going to say then, when he does it is something obvious. the whole thing so far is filler and no content.

I did enjoy the class despite not being used to the American product placement culture. The British say “the proof is in the pudding”, Joel’s pictures are fantastic and create drama. He has the eye. I like his very down to earth approach which is far better than many youtube photographic charlatans. Apart from the techniques he shared, one very important thing I learned from this class is “Be an artist and not a technician”. If you want to learn from people who can take better pictures and more confident and experienced in his/her work than you, Joel is one of those people.

Joel is an amazing artist and teacher. I find the knowledge he imparts is practical, useful and inspiring. Practicing the techniques that he teaches has definitely improved my photography and artistry. I highly recommend this course.

This is for people who want to learn at a higher level regardless if you are a new student in photography or a seasoned professional. This guy goes deep into the theory of what he teaches you ao you will understand a lot more. Well worth the investment.

This video, among anything Joel Grimes has offered, has changed my career. He makes lighting understandable and easy.... and allows an artist to use these tools to express their vision.... Thanks Joel!!!

I recently purchased the course Strobe Lighting on on Location. After watching the tutorials, I went on on assignment and tried the techniques and they were crazy awesome. Joel is a great teacher and I learned a lot from him, but if there was one thing that I wish it had was more demonstrations and details about which Neutral Density filters he used in in each shot.

A Rockstar photographer, Joel Grimes, explains some of his great techniques!!! HDR portraits with iso bracketing, stitching, composing and his signature light scheme. He his also a funny entertainer and a very humble man. Great course, great inspiration!

Joel Grimes does beautiful photographs. This class felt too beginner in the beginning and then it became an infomercial for products like Camranger... show me the alternative if I don't want to buy the product you are promoting and don't tell me that the process is impossible without the product. or the company paying you to promote the product you are selling.

Superb! Thank you Joel for sharing your skills, abilities and vision. The amount of material covered will take several viewings to absorb all the knowledge he shares. I've read several other reviews that complained about the computer crashes and equipment setups. My humble opinion he showed you the effort and the mistakes that leads him to the final vision he presents in his artistry. A very humble man who leaves his ego out of his work and lets his artistry speak for itself. The obstacles enhance the process and makes the journey and problem solving part of the story of his art. If you purchase this course and decide to watch the presentation, set aside at least the entire run time of the course. I was so captivated by his teaching style coupled with the answers to questions I have had for years, I couldn't stop watching. Once again thank you Joel for a great educational video. I can't wait to see where you go next with your artistry.

I love Joel, even though I'm not a big fan of his style. He's a great teacher, really down to earth, and best of all, humble. He's a true professional and knows the business. Even if you're a seasoned photographer, I believe you will pick up some great tips throughout this course. What I enjoyed most from this course was learning Joel's thought processes and how he takes on challenges.

I like Joel and his work. I also own several Joel's tutorials I have purchased here on CreativeLive. Sorry to say, but in this tutorial, Joel is not only repeating himself, he is also stretching the class as much as he can. You will watch "live" computer crashes, his assistants moving props and equipment around, and lots of advertising for the equipment Joel uses. This tutorial should have been edited down to about 10 sections, and price should have been reduced accordingly. I hope Joel is not running out of material to teach. Thank you.

  • Gia D. Aug 13, 2016

This class is a goldmine of advice and wonderful ideas. I'm still considered a noob who's enjoying the natural light process, but I cannot WAIT to try some of the ideas when I invest in my strobes. Thank you CreativeLive and thank YOU Mr. Grimes!

  • torsten . Jul 12, 2016

Unfortunately I expected something different from the workshop title and description. It's not so much about combining ambient and strobe light, but about HDR and stitching pictures. But still, for those who want to know about that, it's a great workshop.

  • Julie 7. Jun 29, 2016

I started watching this live and realized I had to purchase because he imparts such a vast amount of knowledge that I couldn't keep up. I was blown away by how easily he explains all the technical aspects of the world of strobes and HDR. What I think is so great about Joel is that you get to draw from his 30+ years of experience and he doesn't hold back. I feel like my industry knowledge expanded 50x just by hearing his stories of techniques from the past and forgotten terms. I've watched many of the segments multiple times. This is my new strobe Bible! Thanks for being so generous with your knowledge Joel! It was like hanging out with a master for a few days! Money well spent.

  • Lee K. Jun 28, 2016

This was an awesome class! Filled with endless tips and texhniques. Joel is a great teacher.

  • Jodi U. Jun 28, 2016

Love Joel's work and I love that he truly encourages one to become the artist and create our own vision once some basics are shared - bought the course as I know it will be a great reference for many things!!

  • Dottie L. Jun 27, 2016

Joel's no nonsense approach to photography is refreshing. Technical detail without the "sales pitch" for every item you "can't live without." He seems to have photographed long enough to weed out all the un-necessaries. Good information you can apply right in your next photo session. Appreciate his attention to detail and also his 'be creative' attitude. A course you will receive a good return on your investment.

  • Leah S. Jun 25, 2016

Joel is an amazing teacher! His practical, no-nonsense style of teaching is refreshing and inspiring. This course is jam-packed full of useful instruction and I found myself running into many aha moments. You've done it again, Creative Live and Joel Grimes--great job!

  • Marina G. Jun 25, 2016

I watched this LIVE. I loved Joel's clases, he has a simple and understandable way to teach that even me that I do not have technical skill could understood everything. It was so good to learn HDR with ISO, and of course Joel's Grimes style. Because the class title I was expecting him to really go with students to work on the field. That would be awsome. Thanks for this LIVE class

  • Fernando L. Jun 25, 2016

I watched this class live and it was amazing. Joel Grimes has an unique language and style to his pictures and he shows his complete creative process in his class. It's an absolute necessity for people that want to make the most of their portraits and develop their own styles, learning from the very best.
