Studio Pass: Periphery
Matt Halpern
metalcore pre-production, engineering, mixing, and mastering
Joey Sturgis is the producer behind some of the biggest names in metalcore, including Asking Alexandria, Of Mice & Men, and I See Stars. His style is one of the most sought after sounds of the last decade and in Studio Pass he’ll show you how he produces it.
There is no magic bullet to Joey’s sound. It’s simply the combination of a million little decisions that add up to something incredible. In this class – for the first time ever – Joey will demonstrate his entire process: pre-pro, engineering, mixing and mastering, from A-Z.
You’ll learn:
Joey is a hands-on engineer – he’ll talk about how he works with bands to develop their writing and ideas so they are working with the best possible raw material. He’ll show you the specific signal chain he uses for mixing guitars, vocals, bass, drums, and synths. And he’ll give extra focus to vocal tracking, editing, tuning, compression, and effects.
If you want to transform your recording and engineering process, don’t miss your opportunity to learn from chart-topping metalcore producer, Joey Sturgis.
An easy method to develop a musical project focused on music production. Just perfect for me as a beginner.
I watch this a 1000 times to this date from since it first came out. We are talking about modern next level metal music from one of the best multi talented producers of our time!
The quality of the video is really poor, still a good course.
I have been following JS for a while based on some things I've heard. I learned a tremendous amount from this class and am already looking for the next video I want to explore!
This is an awesome class. So great hearing Joey talk about his production workflow and the pre-production stuff. This alone could get people started making records! Highly recommend.
Excellent course for beginners/intermediate producers such as myself. This was definitely worth the money in my mind!
Thought this was a good class overall, but really wanted to see all the drums get mixed, and I felt towards the end of the class it was a little rushed.
The guitar recording preparation class inspires me a lot, because the protection instruction on guitar truly creates more clean and less muddy tone after amp.
Great Class! There are some topics that could have been more detailed (Guitar Sounds for example), but all in all this is a highly recommendable class that I wish I had known earlier of.
Great! thirsty for more CreativeLive Masterclasses
If you wanna see eq Settings and stuff like that, you are wrong! If you realy wanna know how to improve your Music, BUY THAT GENIUS CLASS!!!
As a purchaser of the Studio Pass : Periphery, I have to say the Sturgis Studio Pass is more focused on the mixing itself : no micing or tracking here. Even though I'm not a fan of the type of music Joey's works on, I have to say the man provides some incredible advices that helped me understand a lot of concepts. I'm sure that I'll come back to it as I progress in mixing. Would definitely recommend

This class is incredible! Joey knows his shit!!! Even if you don't like the production style he has you'll learn a ton!
Worth every cent. Definitely recommended!
Great course that goes into cool workflows of editing to achieve today's modern precision. While Joey could be accused of being soulless, the hyper polished end results have a life of their own. Lots to learn from this even if it's just to get the little pieces of ear candy down.
I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of the bands Joey records. The only reason I bought this class was because I enjoyed the Periphery one so much. Joey takes modern production techniques to the absolutely extreme. He takes punch-ins and editing to a level where it's not even funny any more. If you're looking for tips on recording and mixing in general, this class is not for you. If you're looking for editing tips to see how far you can possibly push the strive for perfection, this is pretty spot on. If you're a beginner, don't take this class to heart - Joey's workflow is borderline psychopathic - go and get the Periphery session instead. If you've been recording for a while and you're looking to see how far editing can take you, it's worth a look.
Besides the amount of invaluable knowledge Joey shares and presents, I appreciate maybe one thing even more, his modesty.
So, you are starting in this production world? You are in the right place. Joey Sturgis is one of the top producers at this moment and you gonna learn from his own hand. This Studio Pass is the way you can improve your skills before your push the record button. Every single tip & trick will make you bring it alive your productions, maybe you know some stuffs, but I can bet you that you gonna learn something incredible. This course give all the tools that I was missing and It will do same for you! You are not spending money, you are investing in how to make money using your abilities and skills. Good luck and learn all you need with the Joey Sturgis Studio Pass.
Only partially into the course, but I've already got my moneys worth. I've been mixing for around 7 years already and worked with a lot of bands, but Joey works quite differently to me so this is giving me a totally different take on things. I think some people have expected to watch this and copy Joey's settings, but the information he gives you is worth far more than some settings. You get the knowledge you need to understand why he's doing something and you can do your own thing with it.
Thanks a lot Joseph Sturgis !
This class allowed me to reach the next level in mixing rather fast. I've invested in some of the key stuff he used a lot in these videos, and found myself much more in controll of my own mixes. I feel way more confident, and I'm sure my further improvement as a producer and mixer will go about waaay faster after learning this. Already watched everything twice, and now that I've had a month or so working on the things I've learned, I'm going to go ahead and watch it again, and hopefully pick up more subtle stuff littered around in these videos. Absolutely worth it if you're an aspiring producer
Dear Joey, I would just like to say "thank you" for doing this creative live interview. I am shocked at the amount of detail and material you covered, you really organized everything very well. By using your tips and tricks, my mixes sound A LOT better. THANK YOU! 10/10 To those thinking about buying, please note the following: Joey does not give you all of his personal settings (although he shares quite a bit) Joey does not tell you exactly what plugin chain to use Joey does not tell you what gear to buy What Joey did in this video is much more valuable.... he runs through the most crucial parts of pre-production, mixing, track editing, and a little bit about mastering. He explains each process clearly and shows you how he deals with each situation. That in itself is worth much more than $100. This package contains "bonus content" which basically goes into more detail about vocal editing, mixing, etc. that he didn't have time for in the original interview. If you are looking for the metal-core sound, or you are curious to see how rock producers work their magic, buy these videos! Thank you again, Joey, and keep making sick, sick music. Jake Y.
joey really sounds like a cool guy and i really appreciate his willingness to explain how and why he does things. although i have done a lot of what he has done, there are quite a few cool ideas that i had not thought of. i especially like him explaining how he gets musicians to 'get serious' about how and what they themselves play. it's half the battle. crap in equals polished crap out. hey, we can only do so much, right? anyway if you download any of the vids don't be an ass and share them with everyone. joey deserves much more that. the only thing i wish he would have gone over is the gear he prefers like sample rates, bit depth, mics, mic pres and converters. because, crap in equals polished crap out, right?
There is nothing really too mind-boggling here, just a lot of small things that you normally wouldn't pick up on without years of experience. That, on its own makes this worth the investment. This will teach you that the smallest details are the most important.
