In 1990 Joel produced his first coffee table book, ‘Navajo, Portrait of a Nation’ which received a number of photographic and design awards and produce an eighteen-month solo exhibit at the Smithsonian American History museum. Driven by the creative process, Joel views himself as an illusionist, creating portraits larger than life. “There is no face on the planet that is the same, my vision as an artist is to capture that individual uniqueness through the photographic process.”

I'm already a photographer but I've learned so so much watching the lessons of Joel Grimm. Thank you for all the tips that you gave throughout this course and also for your energy ! Really like it !
-
I like Joel's technical approach. After watching this course I bought my own CamRanger, and often I will set the f/stop and/or shutter speed to capture images, not being a fan of "grain". in my images. I learned alot from Joel, but think sometimes he could have demonstrated a little more while or instead of talking.

I own a whole ton of Joel Grimes courses, and every single one of them is worth twice the money I paid for it. He does repeat some things from class to class, but those are the things that I REALLY needed to have pounded into the my brain. He is a classy and kind artist that has a world of information to offer. For certain, this course is a great addition to your course collection (if you're like me, you have a course collection) and probably should be watched more than once.....or three times. :) Thanks Joel and CreativeLive!

Totally inspiring. This is what I was looking for as I seem to have stalled as a photographer. Love Joel's views, they way he conveys them - short, concise and to the point. Totally recommended.
-
Joel Grimes is not only a great photographer but he is also a great teacher and friend. And he shares great real life experiences and solutions. Thank you Joel & CL.

LOVE HIS ART!!
-
Learned a lot on how to composite images from shooting the backgrounds and having a personal supply of them to setting up various lighting scenarios to match the backgrounds.
-
Pure gold. This is exactly the kind of information I was hoping for. I like the shoot portions of the class where Joel shares some excellent lighting and camera techniques. I especially love the lecture portions, in which Joel shares his journey and lessons as a pro photographer. The wisdom he drops on you in the lectures is alone worth the cost of the class. Seriously, the information is priceless to any aspiring artist. Just get this class!
-
This class should be a must watch. The process and revelations of the creative choices that photographer makes is discussed at length and Joel uses his own art to demonstrate. Joel is one of my favorite instructors. Very easy and fun to listen to! I would give it 5 stars out of 5 for this discussion on how to develop your creativity.
-
I own a few more tutorials of Joel and I follow and admire him all the time. I've been waiting to find a tutorial of him doing his style on location because this is what I normally do, I almost never shoot in studio. So that course is exactly what I wanted, I learned and enjoyed a lot. The only down side for me is that, he is editing only 2-3 pictures at the end and they are only male models, so no beauty retouching. I was expecting to get retouching section from all the shootings covered in the course.
-
Fantastic course. Joel covers everything including lighting, posing business, Photoshop composites, Photoshop retouching. Well done Joel Grimes and CreativeLive.
-
Great info, especially showing some very usable lighting set ups and tips. some of it could have been done a bit quicker, but I guess that's the difficulty of the live broadcast. It would be awesome if there could be an edited version as it's tough to sit through some of the slow parts. Also, the script below the video is horrible on this class, I think it's been generated automatically using a programme, but it's pretty much unreadable.
-
As Joel says, a light meter can't make creative / artistic decisions for you. He chooses not to use light meters because that's not his style, he's an artist not a machine operator. Don't bash people for being different from you please. He demonstrates how to get his style of lighting the way that he attains it. If you want a light meter to tell you how to be a photographer, this class is not for you. If you're an artist wanting to see how an amazing artist creates his art and developed his craft, you will probably enjoy this class.
-
Phenomenal. Five-star!
-
I've just purchased it and I can already say I will enjoy this class. Mr. Grimes had settled the conflict between the artistic and the technical. The declaration that art trumps photography won me over. Now I can grow as an artist using photography as a tool.
-
a master teacher and photographer and very humble. I highly recommend this course.
-
I do not recommend this course because he fills up the time with saying what he is going to say then, when he does it is something obvious. the whole thing so far is filler and no content.
-
Everything I needed to hear, so inspired!
-
Excellent. First off, he is very down to earth. His lectures at the end, on marketing, are valuable. I have spent years in marketing, but have never been great at marketing myself. So, this set of talks was extremely valuable His three light technique is deceptively simple. The way that Joel uses the lights to get edgy and soft portraits, is brilliant. I like his skin softening technique. Really good stuff. This is a tutorial I highly recommend
-
Loved this class! Joel's style of teaching is relaxed, but very informative. Great content. This class has inspired me to get out there and keep moving forward!
-
I did enjoy the class despite not being used to the American product placement culture. The British say “the proof is in the pudding”, Joel’s pictures are fantastic and create drama. He has the eye. I like his very down to earth approach which is far better than many youtube photographic charlatans. Apart from the techniques he shared, one very important thing I learned from this class is “Be an artist and not a technician”. If you want to learn from people who can take better pictures and more confident and experienced in his/her work than you, Joel is one of those people.
-
Absolutely fantastic to see the entire process- you are a wonderful teacher and artist. Thank you!
-
THIS IS AN ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC CLASS!!! JOEL IS A FANTASTIC TEACHER! I OWN SEVERAL CLASSES; I WOULD HAVE TO SAY THIS IS PROBABLY THE BEST!
-
Joel is an amazing artist and teacher. I find the knowledge he imparts is practical, useful and inspiring. Practicing the techniques that he teaches has definitely improved my photography and artistry. I highly recommend this course.
-
I wish there was another choice besides of course/no thanks for would you recommend it...something that was like recommend it BUT... While Joel can and does offer some great info for beginner/intermediate photographers...I would hardly say that this course is indicative of Commercial Photography from start to finish. These are basically studio portraits. Again..not at all without merit or offering knowledge..they do and I really am a fan of Joel...it's just that commercial photography is so many other factors...like lighting a location with added sunlight (creating the mood) and making sure the furnishing (styling/props) match what the client is trying to represent..model selection...etc...etc.
