Straight Line & The Simple Box

So let's talk about some exercises. You know how to take off; you know how to land. Feels a little more comfortable with that. Okay, not too bad, all right, just focus on the one stick. You want to learn how to do the straight line, so really easy. The thing that you need to pay attention to is in this graphic, this animation I made for you guys, the green arrow is the front of the drone. It's where the camera is looking. We'll call that the heading, okay? And the red dots are gonna represent the back of the drone. So on my controller right here, I have this dot. That is what is happening on the remote controllers. So you'll see this drone moving. And that represents how I'm doing that move. So if you're trying to figure this out, you can pay attention to that and then look there. So I'm gonna play this, and then we'll show it to you in the field. So all we're doing to go forward is we're pushing on the right stick up, really easy. What I'm gonna do is with the right stick, is I'm gonn...

a push forward to move the drone forward. (propellers whirring) I'll let go and it's just hovering in place. When I'm ready, I can then bring it back by pulling back on the right stick. (propellers whirring) Just to let you know, you're gonna see me holding the sticks kinda differently. And it's just so the camera can see what I'm doing. I don't hold them weird, but it might be helpful to point out, I personally because of being into video games when I was young, I control my drone like this. So with my thumbs. Some people prefer to control it like this, with two fingers. So it's really just gonna be what you're comfortable with. As long as you get it and you understand it. I don't think it matters too much. So this is the straight line forward, and then you pull back to bring it back. All right, next, practice the simple box. And we're just gonna focus on the right stick. So this is easy; you're just focusing on one stick. You don't have to worry about anything else. We're gonna fly forward, pushing up on the right stick. We'll fly left with the right stick. We'll fly back, and we'll fly to the right. So that's pretty simple because you're just focusing on once stick. And it's left is left, right is right, back is back, forward's forward. When you're facing the way the drone is facing, right? That's why that's really important. So what I'm gonna do now is I'm gonna draw a box. And all I need to do is focus on one stick, and that's the right stick. To start the box, I'm gonna go forward with the right stick, I'll let go. (propellers whirring) I'll then go left. (propellers whirring) I'll let go. (propellers whirring) I'll pull back. (propellers whirring) I'll let go. (propellers whirring) And then I'll go right. (propellers whirring). And the reason why I like to do this one is to show you guys how the drone can move with just one stick. Obviously it's sped up right, I'm not flying. But if you're like, I got the box, this is easy. Try it faster, try to draw that box perfectly, right? Try to get the line really straight. You feel like that's easy, now turn a different way and then draw that box, right? The whole point is, you don't want to have to be facing the way your drone is facing, right? When your drone's way over there, you're actually not probably even gonna know what way your drone's facing, unless you had some landmark, so you're just gonna be able to. You're just gonna need to be able to be like, I gotta bring it back this way, right? You're gonna have to know that. It's gonna have to be comfortable. So this is pretty simple. We're all just focusing on the right stick. And these first ones are really easy to get the hang of. And you see that drone is still staying forward that whole time.

Dirk really did a nice job taking new students thru exercises to gain confidence. The work in Lightroom and Photoshop was helpful, but I wish more time could have been focused on flying or tips. Dirk has presets that he offers. It would have been helpful to see the results using those presets. Looking forward to the free which Drone to buy class and the advanced class

I definitely recommend this course if you are thinking about getting into drone photography looking for the fundamentals. I now feel pretty confident I can get started and that my learning curve will be greatly shortened thanks to the technology available today and a great roadmap of getting started. If you are already started... follow up with his advanced topics... I know I will.

Super class. As a beginner I had little idea what to expect and never got started because of all the talk of people crashing drones right and left and losing a fortune. Dallas made it seem simple. So I bought a Tello beginners drone (great starter by the way), got hooked and am now flying a DJI Mavic Pro 2 and studying for a commercial license. Not sure, this is a great class to start with.
