Organizations to Join
Organizations to join, APA, Advertising Photographers of America. ASMP, magazine photographers. AIGA, which is a graphic design organization. And Adobe User Group. This is just 4 out of a multitude. Why would you join organizations that are photo related? Because they hire retouchers. Designers, ad agencies, hire retouchers. This is why you are joining them. There is no retouching organization you wanna join, really. However, the closest thing we do have to it is Adobe User Group. Why would you join them? Because they are going to be working on the problems and how do you do this, and what's new with the program? They'll keep you up to date. And do you remember I said the network? You want that network. This is where you're gonna find 'em. They have local chapters all over the place. Go to the meetings, participate. Get out there. And, oddly enough, if you all have chops, if you're good, teach. Photoshop University, shall I talk about it? He and I, we've been doing these workshops in L...
A, in person, very pro level, very specific. Just frequency separation, 3 hours. Hair, 3 hours. Skin, just hair. We have learned so much more than we would normally know even with our experience because we had to teach it to someone else. And then, I can't tell you how many jobs we've gotten out of it. So if you've got the Photoshop chops and you're good at what you do, teach it. And you'll find your business expands exponentially. On the same level you were talking about how do you start? You know what, you start, you meet photographers in these groups and you do testing. Testing, what does that mean? You say, hey are you doing any testing? Photographers are fantastic for needing to keep up their chops and do their work. So they'll do photo shoots with no client. And everyone donates their time and whatever they have so that you all have pieces. Stylists will donate their time. Photographers and the retouchers and you all have portfolio pieces and you have reputations that you have now developed with those people. I still do testing for people. And why I do it, I have some photographer friends. You know, the industry dips, things happen. And I've had photographer friends where it's gone bad. And I know it, and they're hurting. And I've been there as I just demonstrated, embarrassingly enough. And I needed help and I got help. I help others out. So I will work for a photographer for free and do a test. I might get a portfolio piece out of it, maybe. But more importantly I've developed another relationship. And then when they have a client, who are they calling? They're calling me. And I'm not trying to be overly Machiavellian about it. It's more Karma.

Well, it's helping out neighbors. I mean, we would go, if you had hay to bale, like, everyone would come over and do yours. And then once yours was done you go over to that farm and you bale all his hay. And everyone just jumped in to help one another as things came up. And that's kinda.
Yeah, the other thing, before we move onto the next section of portfolio, I do wanna say another fantastic place to start doing pieces is schools. So, for example, Art Center College of Design has a photo division. And these photographers need their stuff retouched. Again, it's another place to get pieces. And more importantly, you ever find that these photo kids they're doing edgy stuff. So, not only are you doing retouching work and getting portfolio pieces, chances are it's got some heat to it. It's got something exciting and it's something new. Plus, guess what, those are the ones in the future that ad agencies are hiring. And who are they gonna call? They're gonna call you. So start, with the other people that are up and coming. Do you remember the photo assisting section I showed you? That's my first boss, my first photo boss. And I am his retoucher. And we've show a bunch of his stuff up here. And it's because I worked with him in the trenches. And then moved on up.
