9:45 am - The Model Go-See

The model go see the model what is a ghost? So go see is when you finally you made the connections you have that that report now with agents and agencies and if you're in a town where they're like several agencies you need to go see all of them if you're in new york and there are twenty million cds you should know all of those molly agencies and bookers at each place if you're a new fashion beauty, you do it every single modeling agency out there and there's always a new one the book is a moving from one agency to another all the time is all fashions all about change this definitely true in terms of the money agency where the nc is hot right now I guarantee in two years it'll be different one here it's for one year its elite one the year it's pauline's one year it's you know progressive they keep changing all the time the book is of the same things move from place to place to place as a small works at a buy knows everybody which is great so you need to know everybody know the bookers k...

now the agencies and throughout your career from your testing days two shooting big campaigns big jobs these bookers are your best friend you call them up in a jam like oh this girl has shown up where is she oh, you know what we find out where she is, they will become some your best friends take them to lunch when you get close when you build that report, keep it going because now as you start shooting a lot, you hardly receive them in person it's always on the phone take it a break every now and then and take them to lunch they are your right hand person so the model go see ah go see is the point when you have girls, guys, models coming to see you to show you their work a lot online now so it's not as much as it used to be, but I still like the in person go see now I tell you why later on. So a lot of things happened online that where it is, we'll send you packages online of their models, guys, girls, whatever and you can pick through what you like and see those pictures, but what you don't learn by that is you don't learn how they look today. They could look like this a week ago been the in the world of modeling a girl can change really fast from having short hair, a long hair changing your eyebrows, changing her erlend hair color anything can change, by the way, I could have shot a model for job last week and see if forecasting the next week and she looks really different it's very common so I like seeing what they look like that day and you can always tell that one line but our world now is where you cast girls online and then after I seen the girls online I want stephen person possible I want to see the girls, the guys, the people in person I didn't add and we're not dealing with far fashion models. We did the ad for a big bank and, uh wells fargo so we had is a big cast were casting like twenty different models for this campaign a weeklong shoot tons of people and we had cast the grandfather the grandfather had shot the tv commercial the week before, so he shows up here in the ad for the tv commercial he had this big pepper beard he shows for the job is clean shaven is going a week ago so clients going oh my god, what do we do seem to put a fake beat on him and make it look real but in a week he had taken the beat off another job. We want him clean shaven. It changes that fast so you got me aware what they look like right now that was a week ago the weekend done team commercial by time we're doing this still ads for the shoot maybe it was going they change that fast that fast so be aware of that when you're casting online looking back to the ghost so you had this the model go see and this is the beginning of your career before you start doing the big jobs this is you're starting to test now now going with testing as well so you have this go see the models coming to see you after you get that connection but your first meeting with that first molly hennessy you should go to the agency and the your first go see their if possible to get them comfortable with the you make the girls comfortable with you once you have that connection and they're comfortable then they can come see you but that first go she see should be at the agency generally and they might even tell you oh come here for the go see this depends on the agency and the booker and if they feel comfortable with you and your work they're getting to know you still even when they show your work and they like their work they still wanted to know you make sure you're a decent person you're not crazy you're not a madman no madwoman is them getting to know you little by little by little you're building that relationship you're building that relationship you want to arrange a go see once you had that connection we think with the booker with the booker and you always call and deal with that one book or that to those two bookers all the time when you call the agency that speak to maria miss vito darlene whoever that booker is you want always calling for that person so you call maria to get your go see going and you make soup appointment to have a go see at said agency you show up early say you have a go see set from nine in the morning eleven to see twenty of their models get there like eight thirty get there early use of time to set up uh come comfortable and say hi to the other age the other bookers get to know them a little by little look at the models, photographer photographs and get to know them so you finally have your go see you're seeing down you're at a desk and they come in to meet you one by one so the mall comes in, they show your portfolio, the sitting down, you're looking at their work and you're seeing how they photograph. So forget about the photography apartment and who shot what you're looking at the girl not the photograph we're photographers was we like to look at pictures images but here at the casting the go see you are looking at the model and seeing does she had the same expression in every picture does she had personality does she come alive or her eyes alive? You're looking at the girl not the pictures at the girl and seeing if she is the right girl for me do I want to shoot this girl or this guy or whoever you're looking at take your time and look at the model at first west are doing castings and go sees I was like oh this is great picture that's a great picture it's not about that it's about the model does she work for what you want to do for your vision do you have a vision look at the girls make sure they're right for you that's the purpose of having a go see finding the models that make you feel like I want to shoot this model I think we can do some great together she has she's a great mover she's great energy she's fun find out what you like by looking at books and then when you do this the better you get at it seventy first tests with the booker not the model set up your first test a test is just the photographer shooting the model for the models book and for your book but the tests the testing part is usually for the agency so remote that model if you do a good job to shoot all the girls she got do a great job first so you want all your connections for sitting at that first test with the model booker not the model so I'm had the casting I'm not gonna ask the motto o are you free tomorrow at two o'clock? I won't ask that the booker I want book this girl tomorrow for a test and then I'll give her the information for that test flat test shoot and questions about that former one of the models there at the go see, you know, just looking through the book of your ableto can you ask the model toe give you a few looks or tio give you a few looks at that go see um you're not shooting her at that point, right? You're getting to know her. So the book is her shelling you her looks so you want to ask her to give you different looks at that point, you should you should talk to her and find out where she's from this when you start the connection, find out where she's from uh, how passionate modeling things like that you just make small conversation, but all the entire time looking at her book and seeing she works with you so always looks she would do that should be in her book they're all the same like, ok, this girl's not right for me next girl oh, she get tons of angie she's alive, she's fresh I love this girls look and you start looking at girls books for guys books whatever you like shooting collection male models of human models you'll find out what you like in that go see process and you'll see right then and there how they are in front of the camera you're going to sits for that now the beginning but usually give you their brand new models a brand new model may only have two pictures or three or there's a polaroid in their book in the old days of polaroid it might be just one picture because they're brand new the agency is trying this girl out and they're trying you out to see if you can get a great shot of this potential model does this girl have it and do you have it trying you out so many questions the more I love the creative by people with other great question thank you so much you guys mark I who's from london says when a booker leaves the agency do start from scratch with an agency or should you find where they moved that's a great question so booker leaves which happens all the time so you had a connection finally with this booker this book leaves and goes to another agency you start all over again with that other agency well, as you had that connection with that one agent you'll meet other ones as well you have that main agent you deal with but you'll meet the other ones as well because sometimes that was first will be busy and they passed you and somebody else keep the connection with that agency and followed that booker the new agency as well they all move around all the time it's extremely common we love london so all right we have a couple questions one from d wayne thomas and one from stacy and de wayne thomas is in columbus, ohio and says what do you do if there aren't many agency in your city how do you go about going to different agencies outside of your area? And stacy says is that even possible if you're not living in a big city if you're not living in a big city and there no agencies there then you go to the online and find miles that way it's not as secure as being with an agency if you want to shoot fashion and beauty you really do need to be in an area where there's a market for fashion and beauty um if you wash it miles there are tons of outlets online for for many miles like like the mall mayhem sites things like that but you do for the risk of girls not be professional um anybody can go online and coaxes a model anybody you could be five pounds in place of a model um not agency with an agency that girl has gone through the paces of being selected to be a model and she's been groomed she's representation she's being hired by professionals too represent a brand to sell a product so it's safer that way if you are that's a small town with their there are no agencies um and you really want to shoot fashion and beauty as a career not just a fun as career I think it's important to be in a major market or area where uh there are agencies if you want to as a career if you want do it for fun and that's all well and good I think it's fine also to use the other outlets to find models and to work on your craft and build your book and then move away someplace where you could find a bigger market. So little follow up question from low jean is how do you judge if there is business for models outside of new yorker les what about boston? Or how do you know that having an eloquent cities um you could look at your local sunday paper and if you see ads with local store there there's an agency there they're booking models look in your sunday paper and see if there any advertisements or anything he billboards where you're seeing models advertising a product if there are there's an energy there and they're hiring models locally for those stores atlanta, boston one question from photograph photographers perspective how does it work contract wise I was under impression and modeling agencies contract models you've got you signed something with them does the same thing happened with photographers when you approached them or is it on the relationship basis it's what more racially based it's so if it does does that agency have you signed a contract to shoot their models? No no we're doing a test shoot it's not that I uh sayyou has exclusive photographer for that agency you should be shooting all the agency models everywhere with the model is different the model is signing a contract usually to be with that agent either as their their mother agency or as an agent for them so the market have several agents could have won in new york one in miami when chicago when l a I think I have several agents um leslie different from what you're doing so I follow what they're doing so a follow up to that if you how does it work then you approach the booker after the whole testing let's say you do have relationship with few bookers you bring in the jobs tow them or do they sometimes called all we have the job we need photographer for so no no so jobs it's really different for a job? Um molly nancy is not hiring you to shoot a job you're calling the agency and to sew this outworks this is all a big relationship so once you've got to the place where shooting a lot of models and you've built your portfolio and it's great because this testing process is this building bond or this body building process where you are getting all the agents getting to the models and then you find a climb so you've been testing uh comey and now you have great work and um you know, kid on that wants to hire you so kenner is the president of this company and she has this new line of dresses and she wants to hire you and she loves comey's pictures so kid is going to hire us photographer too shoot comey so now you wanna call comey's agency and say I'm a job on said day I want a book comey for this job so you're now hiring the models, which is why the agency is now love you because you are the person who's hiring their models, you start testing the models and getting another bookers and then you get clients and then the clients want you they expect you to know all the models clients don't know all the models they want you to know all the models you call it the casting when you call a casting director is a big job and you have a casting and you'll look at models you tell your client okay the's air that my top ten girls out of two hundred which ones do you like then you discuss which what you like? Why you like the girls you like and then together you'll select those girls or the client will pick the good fits their brand well, then you booked them and you will shoot them that specially how it works for the testing is your responsibility to bring all the team like make up about this and watch rose and from the testing is it the photographer whose responsibility to bring the team together so lutely absolutely it's not just about photography your team reflects on you and speaking of which is a great question because when you go to see that ma'lik agency way all think and beginning my career I thought, ok, I'm photographer they're just looking at my photography no absolutely wrong they're looking at your sources who do you choose for makeup? Who you just saw stanley because that is a reflection of you so you're basically not just to talk very you are director you and outpoint this team to get a goal that team later on you put this team together is going to help you make better images so it's not just do like this model do you like this make up so you need to know about models aboutthe fashion about hair makeup even nails all this stuff you need to learn about if you want your fashion beauty the other aspects to the business that you must know because that booker is not just looking at how you take pictures but who do you choose as the makeup artists you have a great shot make it's horrible cycle my god, I still use that person to make up also it's all on you as a photographer, you must have a strong team of hair makeup established all these things are very important I think thatis I just think that it's so valuable just that statement alone I think a lot of us that's a great question we worry about our own photography or own gear and we're not looking at the whole picture is that it's way bigger than just photography? It's not just that photography it's the vision and how you put together you're basically a director so you recommend to wait till you have a strong team? Tio yes, absolutely and we'll go through that process also of how you build that team you need a strong book before you go insane agency this night is pre pictures of girls it's the whole package not just how do you shoot the girls but how you direct them, how you had them done for hair and makeup, styling all that stuff they're looking at all of that how do you make that happen? So I was looking at the picture and how you did it, they don't care about how you live it, talk us care about open, candid, you'd use. What did you use? What mike is, that is it back, they don't care, they're thinking about how you gonna make her look good is to make it working on this shot. Is it of the moment? Is that last season isn't this season? Is it from five years ago? How will you make that model look that's, what they care about, and that only qatar for you, for your target friends and for yourself and your buddies, that's, it agency, doesn't care about photography, they care about how you going to use that photography to make their models look good.

This was more of a collaborative course with Matthew Jordan Smith and Yoanna House, and it is brilliant. I just finished watching this for a few hours straight. I own several Creative Live courses and this is definitely in my Top 3. Matthew's teaching style is so kind but to the point and informative. That's the kind of photographer I aim to be. He puts forth his knowledge here in a way that totally encouraged everyone involved. I loved Yoanna as well. She was very direct but friendly as well. I loved watching her direct the budding models and her experience showed quite well. This part is for John, the guy who commented on June 2017. I completely disagree with you that there were too many questions and that other people were talking much more than Matthew, and that that was a negative. Matthew's whole point was not just to get straight to shooting but to talk a bit about interacting with people in general. This wasn't just about technical stuff; this was about forming that connection between photographer and model/subject. This was as much psychology as it was about actual shooting, and I absolutely loved that. So I 100% strongly disagree with you as this is one of Creative Live's BEST courses that I've seen thus far. Thanks a ton, Matthew and Yoanna, and thanks so much again, Creative Live (I'm a huge fan of you guys!).
