Know your Film, Know your Light, Know your Lab
Stop with the excuses, grab your film camera and get out there and make amazing images! If you’re comfortable with your DSLR and post processing, then learning to use your film camera is easier than you think! In this beginner course, Sandra Coan walks through how to shoot with film so that you feel comfortable, confident, and excited to take the best pictures! She’ll talk about choosing your film and how to find and work with a lab to process your images.
This course will cover:
Don’t be intimidated by the idea of using film. Sandra will show you how to slow down during your photo shoot, focus on what you’re trying to capture, and ultimately get a great image straight out of camera.
Finally a film course that explains everything in detail and is easy to understand. I thoroughly enjoyed this course and felt that I learned so much. Thank you,
Clear and basic ….. super easy to digest and begin applying to your every day photography experience!
I enjoyed this course. Friendly and non technical but telling you what you need to know about starting out in film. I hadn't shot film for 20+ years but recently got back into it and this is a nice refresher telling you the basics that you need to know , especially regarding metering (and that I had never been told). thanks.
Loved this class! I believe I've learned the beginnings of film photography, and I can't wait to get started. I just ordered a used film camera and with the information Sandra has taught, I feel very confident in my abilities to use what I've learned. I've also taken her film photography and strobe (lighting) class, and learned so many valuable tools there. Great teacher!
This course was incredible. Straightforward, clear. I'm so excited to get started on my film journey.
This course is a no brainer. My medium format film costs me $2.50 for every shot. You don't have to mess up exposure on too many shots to pay for both these courses. That alone is worth the cost. Her metering instruction is priceless. But she has done test shots again that would cost $2.50 each for you to do, lays out the film stocks and shows them to you. How much would that testing cost. And she teaches how to select and work with a lab to get consistent results including instruction to them and types of scanners.
I just got into film photography and I found this course to be perfect to setting the mood, for understanding the main differences between film and digital, between black and white and colour, for understanding the basics of under/over exposure and metering light. I strongly recommend and look forward to apply what I've learned.
this class is great! love it!
Sandra is a gifted teacher. She is so passionate and inspiring. She has opened a new door to me in my photography. I am very happy to be taking the journey that she started me on.
Sandra is amazing! Her knowledge and passion for film photography paired with her background in teaching make taking this class or any other offered from Sandra a no-brainer!
Just as all of her classes, Sandra has helped me to understand film photography in such clear terms that I am seriously going to take it up. Her portfolio on her website has to be seen to be believed she knows what she's talking about.
I have had the privilege of learning from Sandra in a workshop environment and I have to say that her approach in teaching this online class is exactly the same. Sandra is well prepared and uses real life examples that are easy to follow and very relatable. I especially appreciate the fact that in this class Sandra addresses a multitude of topics that cover everything that is needed to get up and running with shooting film. In my research over the years I have never found a more comprehensive overview of an introduction to film photography all in one class. Thank you Sandra - and thank you CreativeLive for offering this wonderful class for film photographers.
I have literally followed dozens of photo classes in my life, also back when film was the only medium around, but I have never obtained as qualified advice and, honestly, as sublime insights about using film as I did from Sandra's class. Yet, every minute of it was perfectly clear and easy to understand. Everything just made sense! I can say without exaggerating that she is one of the most astonishing natural teaching talents I have ever come across.
Sandra's class was by far one of the most inspirational, educational, and the clearest of all the classes I've watched. Her use of images to illustrate her point (ie. the different latitudes of film) was the perfect aid for visual thinkers. I'm newer to the world of film, but have been shooting digitally for about 9 years. I felt like I had a decent grasp on the technicalities of shooting, but this class specifically was an immense help in so many ways. Her lessons on incidental lighting vs reflective lighting in particular were eye openers. I thought I understood light but something about the way Sandra described it along with the visual of her actually placing her meter where she needed the reading; it was an AHA moment for me. Even her speech patterns were great, there weren't sentence fragments, there wasn't the use of slang to emphasis her point; that might seem a silly thing to point pout but after watching other classes, I found myself tuning out because the presenter had said, "Uh, you know" 100 times, and kept saying "it" but was never clear on what IT was. If you're new to film, or even if you've been shooting for years, I'm sure there is something for you in this class. Totally worth every penny.
Sandra is a gifted teacher!!! I've been following her work for years and know what an incredible photographer she is - but to be able to teach the way she does is truly a rare gift! I've been shooting film on and off for years and was amazed at how much I could still learn from Sandra's class. She presented the information in a way that was so easy to follow that you couldn't wait to get started. It's wonderful to learn from someone who is clearly passionate about their craft - but who is also excited for others to succeed at what they're teaching.
Amy could not have said it better in her review of this class! I am also a film shooter (have been shooting film personally for 8 years and professionally for 4) and even as someone who understands a lot of what Sandra was talking about, I STILL found this class to be incredibly helpful and learned a lot. Sandra is such a great teacher and an inspiration to so many film photographers. Great class! Thanks Sandra and Creative Live for putting this together for us.
I have followed Sandra's beautiful work for quite some time. Watching her class confirmed that she is an insanely talented photographer AND teacher. Her teaching style is very easy to follow and she answers many questions before they are asked. Even though I have shot film for years, I still learned so much and had several a-ha moments for things I want to try when shooting next. I watched her class live and was so impressed that I wanted to keep it forever so I bought the class. It is worth every penny. Even though the class says Intro, there is much a seasoned film shooter can learn and reinforce.
