I have watched several class through Creative Live. I thought this class was one of the best I have seen. Scott Robert Lim really "breaks it down" and gives you complete information you can work with. I love that this class is a follow up to his Crazy Stupid Light Workshop. He piggybacks on the previous workshop with updates to make the teaching more current and to clarify and info that was lacking. Scott Robert is a fantastic teacher! I feel empowered!
This class is loaded with key, valuable techniques combined with practical demonstrations which can be related to real life situations. I imagine watching this again, taking notes and then putting it all into practice. Living in Bali my clients want outside sunset portraits and Scott talks a lot about his techniques for achieving stunning images in this sort of light, and other situations also of course.
Enjoy this class so much. So inspiring
I loved the class. I learned a lot, and came back to re-watch several lessons to improve my photography (specially those regarding Bright Light and Low Contrast Lighting situations).
I've been trying to get through this course for months. I figure that I paid for it that I need to finish it. I've taken multiple courses through Creative Live and this one has been the worst. I've also taken other online courses that from another company that have been over and above this one. His photographs obviously turn out good but he lacks the ability to convey how he gets to that point. His lighting in the studio looks awful. And often he states he's trying to show what something would turn out outside or in another environment but doing it in the studio. Well go outside! His style is also abrasive. I would not recommend it at all. Terrible course. I'm not going to complete it.
I already own Lim's class, "Crazy, Stupid Light" as well as two of his Strobie 230 flashes with transmitter (in addition to my Canon speedlight). I appreciate being able to get into lighting with flashes and equipment that costs much less than Profoto lights etc. that I couldn't afford yet. Lim has a very organized and energetic teaching style. He is a great speaker in that he is excited about what he is doing and seems to love to help others learn how to be successful with their lighting. He is very animated and funny and has the right blend of being confident yet self-effacing and admits his mess-ups during class. I find him very engaging and interesting. If you have less than $500 or $600 to spend on lights, but want to start adding lighting to your photo shoots, he is a great place to start.
Loved watching Scott Robert Lim's course. Scott is a real professional. Scott is a great, personable photographer that takes amazing, beautiful pictures. I like that he can also use speed lights for artificial lighting. We don't usually have time (unless we are in a studio) to set up studio strobes and all of these softboxes. Scott does a great job at simplifying lighting, to make quick, yet beautiful images that stand out from the crowd.
This is a great class full of information on small portable lighting! I am not sure why there is all the negative comments on here. I never once felt like he was condescending or arrogant. People really need to lighten up. If his personality offends you, you might want to take a hard look at your sensitive, thin-skinned snowflake self. I took a class of Robert's at a workshop and he was just as energetic, entertaining and educational in person. I really learned a lot from that class and in the two years since have come a long way with off camera flash from where I was then. This class has only given me more insight into OFC in an advanced way that I am already putting into practice with great results.
I read several reviews on this site which gave me hesitation to buy this course. Nonetheless, I pressed on. Now I have a suggestion for those considering parting with their cash. Before you buy, go to any of Scott’s galleries online. If you can shoot at Scott’s level move on. If you cannot see the artistry in Scott’s work, move on. If you cannot conceive of the technical proficiency Scott has with flash, move on. But if you are mortal photographer that desires to improve your work, compare your personal portfolio to Scott’s. He wins awards for good reasons. Invest the time and money. You will be amply rewarded. Real World Lighting: Advanced Techniques is worth every penny. So is Crazy, Stupid, Light. I purchased both and now use Scott’s advice and techniques daily. Plus, he provides a good dose of inspiration and humor. Scott is an awesome professional, fantastic photographer and a wonderful teacher.
Scott delivers a ROCK SOLID education on lighting the right way. I'm amazed how many people poo-pooed this because he's loud or he speaks the truth. Don't confuse his passion for helping and education with being pushy. His results speak for themselves and they are great...right out of the camera.
I've been following Scott for years.......You must have a open mind to take in all the knowledge he's sharing with us some of the best lighting Technics in the world........Keep it coming Scott you're the BEST
I LOVE this instructor. Scott is on point, and his delivery is so engaging. I...cannot...stop...watching! And I feel so convicted about what he's saying, I'm in tears, because I know what he's saying is all true. I have to up my game!
Very informative...Thank You!!!!
course has some good material for lighting techniques. However there are plugs for his equipment he's designed. I have purchased his lights and the triple mount and just please do your research before purchasing. I've had more misfires from his lights and triggers than anything else I've used. I've switched to the Cheetahstand and Flashpoint (Godox) lights with their triggering and not had a problem. His triple mount is nice and triggers well but is cheaply made and breaks. I switched to the Cheetahstand triple mount that made stonger and hasn't broke at the base mount. Take in the course material but would advise don't suck into the sales pitch of the products. I tried to get ahold of him on the broken products and never heard back from him.
I learned so much from this course that I had to take notes additionally to the included pdfs. Highly recommended if you - like me - have been taking photos with natural lighting before and are new to using lights / flashes. Even if you used external flashes before, there are many new ideas in Scotts course that will make your images stand out.
Awesome course! Totally recommended
The course material is great. It just takes a little effort to get past the photographers wacky personality.
Outstanding job of explaining complicated information in a basic way. His interaction with the studio participants and including a "final exams" section was very helpful with regards to his assistance with recommendations of the setups and tweaking of the results. I very much enjoyed the critique segments as Scott discussed so many obvious and not so obvious comments as well as demonstrating minor edits that vastly improved the images. This course is full of educational information, tips and motivation. Glad I bought it.
I really enjoyed this class with Scott. Scott is another great instructor for teaching light and really helps you get a handle on it. Not only that but he shows you how to get really creative with light and speedlights, even if you only have a limited budget.
I've watched classes from CreativeLive and other outlets... a lot of classes. This class is the best I've viewed yet when it comes to lighting. I say that without hesitation. That doesn't mean I haven't enjoyed the others or they don't have value. I'm only recognizing the fact that this one is just that good.
Hey, I took A lot of Creativelive courses and I've been a full-time photographer for a year and i can guarantee you no doubt this course will take u to next scale, obviously in my situation with each creative live course ,you take what you need and just Practice Practise error and Learn.
There is enough information here to be able to turn you into a pro photographer with just this one course. It is one thing to know this stuff and quite another to be able to break it down into simple terms that anybody could grasp. Scott is a great teacher because he is organized and is logical in his method of teaching. Please give us some more from Scott. I would buy any course that he gives! cbanton
scott is great, this is the one for advanced photographers really : advanced lighting skill, composition and concept.
Very clear and concise instructions. Once you start viewing you can't stop. Scott makes it interesting and exciting. He's come to Papa or Who's your daddy philosophy just wins you over. Terrific instruction !!!
Scott Robert Lim to me is more a teacher that happens to be a great photographer, than he is a great photographer that decided to be a teacher. He is that good, and that is saying something since many photographers here on CreativeLIve are great at image taking, but are simply not good at teaching. That said, If you are new to flash photography, and, you are thinking about buying this course, and you've never seen Crazy Stupid Light (which I will call CSL from now on), stop. Go buy CSL first, then give this a visit. Advanced Techniques with Scott Robert Lim, is pretty much that, its an advanced course, that covers a bit more of the skillset of using artificial light for better image taking. While there are snippets of the CSL course, those sections feel a little bit rushed in Advanced Techniques, and I think the reason for that is quite simply because he ALREADY covered those sections in CLS in much fuller detail. And in truth, if I never saw CSL, I may not have had as good a grasp of the skillset as I do now. CLS is the foundation, and Advanced Techniques is the structure that sits securely on the foundation. Yes I know It cost more getting the 2 courses instead of one, but trust me, this is one of those times where you really can benefit from both.
