Extremely interesting course, especially if you're into documentary photography

  • Jenny M. Feb 14, 2022

I quite enjoyed listening to Ash as he reflected in almost stream of consciousness style about what he does and how he does it. It is clear that he encourages others to find their own way, not necessarily do what he does. I highly recommend this class for others interested in street photography.

Great class, I really learned a lot. My technical skills are what they are, you can either work on that or not, but being out there having to talk to people, how to go about organizing your work, learning what he goes through directly relates to what anyone on the street would need to know. It's not all news, but the validation is great, being able to say Oh, ya! That is how I do it, or Oh! that works for you, I'll try it, is priceless. Don't you always want to bounce what you are doing off of someone that actually does it? I do. And this is the perfect way to do it without being a giant pain in the arse to poor Ash when you seem him running around the city or find him on Insta. Brilliant.

This course has become so important to me. I appreciate how authentic and open Ashley is. I would love to grab and cup of coffee and just shoot the breeze. He has so much to say, and Id love to hear more.

  • Patty . Sep 10, 2020

    Enjoying it so far

  • Martin E. Aug 25, 2020

    Very informative and fun.

  • Glenn S. Jul 31, 2020

HI, Sorry but I agree with the other people who gave a thumbs down. I must say again too much talking by Ashley and too much of talking head format of a class. Just not over all good enough as a paid course.

  • Tina V. Jun 30, 2020

Great course. From how to approach strangers, to the gear, to editing. The best part is you get to see some video how Ashley actually works while photographing on the street. Very educational!

  • S. May 18, 2020

An inspirational course - I learned a lot technically and practically but it was listening to Ashley share his experiences that made the course exceptional.

  • Megan D. Apr 22, 2020

Wonderful class. Outstanding, honest presenter who clearly loves what he does, but also delivers some challenging realities. His passion is contagious. I loved watching every episode.

  • Gina K. Apr 12, 2020

Ashley provided some great insights about photographing strangers. I had many take-aways from this class such as: rejection; telling your story through photos by doing research first; observing your shoot location; the editing process to name a few. He was straightforward by emphesizing photography is not a job. One must have the commitment, the passion. By doing so, one will embark on adventure.

Mr. Gilbertson is an extraordinarily good teacher, who confronts his own introversion in a deep and meaningful class that should help all of us who fear approaching strangers.

Ashley Gilbertson tells a great story, and he tells it well. He keeps the narrative tight, and gets his message across with passion. Many courses on Creativelive start out very well, but, after a short while, begin to drag. Not this one. It has a nice balance of technical information, and honest interpretation of photography as a craft. I learned a lot from it. Ashley comes across as self-effacing and sincere. I get the impression that he’s “a bit of a lad”, as we say in Australia. I caught myself thinking that I would like to meet him sometime, but suspect that very quickly one of us would end up choking in a headlock because of our divergent world views. And that would probably be me. All in all, a great course. I recommend it to anyone interested in street photography or street portraiture.

Fantastic class and amazing presenter, with relevant life experience! Couldn't recommend this enough.

  • Michelle M. Jan 29, 2020

My favourite class on CreativeLive so far! Ashley is such an interesting human, he brings so much to this class with his experience of the world. Also really practical tips and I enjoyed the on location shooting videos too to really see his points in action. Every lesson is so valuable and captivating, I couldn't wait to finish the class but was also sad it was over. Valuable and I know I'll be coming back to it in the future too! Highly recommended for anyone interested in street/documentary/journalism (or just photography in general).

Thanks for sharing your honesty and passion for the work you do, Ashley. It's so refreshing to dig into a "no-b.s." course like this to further shape my approach as a documentary filmmaker. If you're also someone who goes into the real world with little more than your own guts, personality and a camera to create impactful images with strangers – take this course. You'll be glad you did.

This class was fantastic. Ashley is a great instructor. Makes you want to go up to everyone and snap some pics

  • Guilherme F. Oct 22, 2019

    FANTASTIC!!! Changed my life!!!

  • Samuel B. Sep 16, 2019

Ashley wastes no time getting into the intangibles of photographing strangers. His is another voice in the future echo chamber of my career telling me that professionalism is about how I as a person interact with other people ... not as much about how I interact with my gear.

  • Debbie S. Aug 24, 2019

This is an excellent course for both the novice and experienced street photographer. I fit the novice category and it has helped me to get out there and step outside my comfort zone. Connecting with people on the street is so much cooler (and fun!) than I ever imagined. Ashley provided so many great tips based on his experiences and I especially admired his approach to introducing himself and how he honestly expresses his intent. I've used what he taught - I've gotten nos, but I've also gotten yeses. It's working!! Yay!! Thank you Ashley!

I got way more from this class than I expected to. I am into street photography (purely as a hobbyist) and found the advice and "teaching" part of the class to be very helpful and thorough, but the highlight is Mr. Gilbertson. This man is so thoughtful and worldly, and he has such passion for people and the art. I would really like to shake this man's hand and thank him personally!

  • Eric P. Jul 26, 2019

Thank you for this view of StreetPhotography

  • Minjun K. Apr 26, 2019

Amazing, great course... worths the money.

  • William G. Mar 20, 2019

Well, I run a street photography Meetup group, and I've recommended this course to everyone I talk to. My first thought when I was watching the course is "this is about photo-journalism". A word to the nay sayers giving reviews here; street photography and photo-journalism are indeed related. Street photography isn't necessarily photo-journalism; nor is photo-journalism necessarily street, but they DO cross over. Looking at some of Gilbertson's work, very often it's candid work. Some of the photos of people on the streets of Poland are indeed street; at the same time, in the context of a larger collection of work, they could be also called photo-journalistic. Again, to the nay-sayers, the information offered here, whether you use it or not, it useful to know. Yes, he carries two cameras, and shoots his candid shots wide; and if he decides to introduce himself, he might also do some portrait work. I've done the same thing for years, and I'd be offended if anyone didn't call my work street photography. Just the small bits of information he's offering can be helpful; I've already added a notebook and pen to my camera bag. As far as teaching technique, I think we all want to learn are own. But I understand that some people feel that there wasn't enough technique taught... I get that. A street photography course could be many things, and I know that not everyone can be happy. I see chill, and enjoy this course; it's the best introduction to the street genre I've seen so far. My street photography group Street Photographers West went to New York City last, and spent a day learning from Ashley. It was money well spent; he's a great teacher.
