This is very valuable class for the people taking photographs of people. The class is shorter than other classes but full of information that need to know for portrait photography.
Very cool headshot basics and why HEART matters in the portrait photography!
Love Peter's ideas but this series defines "infomercials".
I really appreciated Peter's pointers on connecting with the person you're photographing. I like his rapport with people. He has an engaging and entertaining persona and personality. On the other hand, I found the general content superficial and even annoying at times because of his consistent product peddling, whether it was lighting or his book. I don't believe the price I paid ($11) was wasted. However, I'm glad I didn't pay more. Also, on lesson 13, ricochet is misspelled. It isn't richotte, it's ricochet.
I enjoyed this class Peter made me laugh when he was doing his Hurleyisms, the best part of this is how he shows you how to connect with the clients...
Hmmm...I'd call this class a thumbs sideways. All of the lessons up until he starts shooting you'll wonder when the Peter Hurley commercial ends. You may even be tempted to look up what it would take to get a refund. Unless you feel strongly against finishing the class, I mean, you just can't take it (some of you will feel that way), hang in there. Once he starts shooting, that's where the class begins. Watch all of the rest until the end. It'll be worth it. What this class is not: it is not the headshot book for whatever cheap price you paid on CL. If that's what you're looking for, don't buy it. You won't get it. What it is: it is about a reasonable amount of his light setups, posing, reasons behind his poses, and a TON about subject interaction, which, frankly, is the bulk of any shoot. Final thoughts: I got the class for $21 bucks. That's about the max I feel the value of this class was. I mean, it was barely worth $21 bucks. Hope this is helpful.
I've watched this and I've seen Peter in person. He is, above all else, a personable guy. Funny and likable. His tips on lighting are pretty standard. He's just working to sell the gear with his name on it. The real value in the course is the way Peter directs people and gets them to give their absolute best. And watching two-plus hours of that is worth it. Peter captures people at their best. Isn't that what it's all about?
To appreciate this properly you probably need to see some of his YouTube videos to acclimate to his energy and dynamic. You also need to realize this is not a techical course in the sense of mechanics of photography. It is presumed that you know your camera and have an understanding of the fundimentals of lighting. Peter's key to sucess has not been his ability to properly expose a frame, any photographer of some skill can manage that. He is about expression, getting a genuine expression not a canned smile or say cheese snapshot and therein lies the magic he weaves. He might come across as egoistic to some but I don't think he really is. Watch his videos ans sure hes a bit of a lpud goofball that says things in a humorous if somewhat abrupt manner but look beyond that and you see the genuine human who makes it his mission to make people feel good about how they look. This course is about HIS "Schtick" and how a technically competent photographer can up his game to a higher level with people skills and some tips to get them to look better. Now I do getthe issue with product self promotion, but I guess he's got bills and tuitions to pay.
I think this is a great compliment to his book! I can see how others may view this as not an informational course on headshots, and if I were a beginner I probably would as well. I avoided this class before because of the comments and seeing only snippets of it here and there, but I came back after a few years after realizing that when I get over all of the technical stuff which is essential to learn, I have to learn how to connect with my subjects/clients. You can learn technical stuff until you're blue in the face and apply it to still life or a mannequin, but that's what your shots will end up looking like if you put a human being in front of your camera. I'm glad I came back to this because now I understand what it means to create an authentic portrait of a person! Get this along with the book and watch how it makes a difference.
This was a brilliant seminar which addresses psychology more than technique. To me, it was invaluable information and a bargain at $25. Cheers Pete!
Great course by Peter Hurley. Loved how he gets people to feel comfortable and show raw emotion.
As a long time people photographer, I have to agree with Peter, that to get a great headshot image, you develop a relationship and trust with your subject. This course is a MASTER CLASS and is understood that you already have a competent knowledge of your camera a understanding of in this case studio lighting. If your looking for technical details of the science and technicals of lighting, this is not it. It took me a long time to understand that of great importance is the connection between photographer and subject to truly change my photography to a better level.
You know what? I have read too many bad reviews about this lesson, but I think that those reviews were developed from a wrong point of view. Peter Hurley rocks, if you are looking a master class where an specialist will talk you about what is the real important thing about being a photographer, and how important is the conection with your model, This is your master class. But if you are looking the recipe to improve your poor technnique, this is not the place. As a photographer, I have learnt a lot from him and it is always great to have the opportunity to listen someone that great saying those meaningfull words about our jobs, it shows that you are in a good path.
I really enjoyed the course. I have to admit I had not seen the 3 "how to" videos Peter has shared on Youtube. Just finding out and watching those videos more than made the course of great benefit to me. I immediately purchased the book following completion of the course and looking forward to learn more from this artist. Thank you Peter for all you do to share your passion with the photography community!
Peter is king! I've learned loads of stuff. I have his book to and it's a great complement. This is the real deal. World class! His ability to help people look good is incredible. Thank's to Creative live for this!
This is a fantastic course! Peter clearly explains his techniques on how he brings out the best in people, to obtain the best headshots possible. There is a wealth of information here, presented with some humor, humility, and a must see for anyone who wants to learn or improve their headshot photography skills.
Peter Hurley is simply the best at Headshots... No questions about that. You need to learn from him... Period... Honestly, there are some free youtube videos that cover most of this content. That being said, this course does a great job of putting everything in one place. You may find this class will leave you wanting a bit more. This isn't a bad thing, it is just a lot bigger of a subject than can truly fit into any one class. Peter himself mentions a few times that you will need to buy his book and I couldn't agree more. If you aren't familiar with Peter Hurley or if you are simply interested in increasing your game when taking people photos... Take a look at this class.
The guy is simply amazing!! His energy, humor and "heart" teach and entertain seamlessly. You have so much fun watching him work you forget you are learning from one of the best out there!!!
I am from Indonesia, approximately 15-hour flight from USA. it was not possible for me to attend the Peter's seminar directly. But through this class, I was face to face and gets a lot of lessons from Peter. Not many photographers in my country that provide this kind of seminar, so I feel very fortunate to be online participant of this class.
Peter is just phenomenal. He's passionate about head shots but he's not stuffy. I have learned so many key points about taking head shots from his videos.
Having purchasers his book The Headshot, followed him on social media and purchased the creative live The Headshot makes me a much better photographer. Peter's approach and connection with his subject in front of his camera is amazing! I have learned 1to slow down, instigate, irritate, motivate and constipate my subject before I shoot! Thank you Peter... I will be looking into Hurley Gear....Terry
