I loved everything — the personal story, the artist's style, insights into living and working in Alaska, the tutorial in the wild, editing and the shooting process. These lessons are truly great, and I think I’ll watch them again to revisit some of the interesting details. Thanks!
I was thrilled to learn that this course was coming and was still surprised by how much Tom over-delivered on my already high expectations! I bought his riveting "Images of Nature" book from the Denver airport gallery a few decades back, where I was blown away by his prints. I've done eight freelance assignments for National Geographic across the decades, so my interest included teaching ideas and I loved his approach to this presentation. This was superb. I would highly recommend these 10 1/2 hours to any budding wildlife photographers!
I must say, the first half of this presentation should have been labeled as a infomercial for Olympus camera gear. It should have been more camera inclusive. After wading through this, the second half was valuable and offered some good tips.
Amazing course! Tom Mangelsen is not only an expert photographer but a super engaging storyteller. My photograph has already improved. Tom is now on my shoulder, out there with me -his voice and advice firmly in my mind guiding me with composition and just generally enjoying the experience of it all. Highly recommend his course!!
This class is a winner! What an amazing, awesome and inspiring class. Tom is not only an expert but a super interesting storyteller. I feel my photography has improved already. Tom is now on my shoulder guiding my composition decisions and more. Highly recommend!!
Awesome!
A superb course and one which I already see myself referring back to regularly as I work towards elevating my craft. Thank you!
What made this class truly delightful was the sense of getting to know Tom on a personal level, almost as if we were engaging in real-life conversations. His wit, coupled with his unwavering dedication to addressing every question, made the learning experience immensely satisfying. The extensive fieldwork showcased in the class underscored the dedication and passion behind it, which was truly commendable. For anyone passionate about wildlife and photography, this class is an absolute must-watch!
Possibly my favorite Creative Live class so far. The footage of field shooting sessions with Tom brings home the application of the technical information presented. I found it all very interesting and inspirational.
Excellent class for beginners of Macro Flower Photography. I especially enjoyed how in depth the video was working directly with the two students. Flashing back and forth to the actual photos taken to see the individual changes. I was so inspired I went out and recreated the make shift photo studio/lab the students were using at the end.
What a fabulous course. I have all three of Frans Lanting's classes on creative live and they are the best. I have purchased dozens of classes by other photographers and honestly, these are the ones that never grow old and I always come back to. So grateful he took us into his studio at the end. Fascinating to see how the pros set up their studios. His soft spoken manner makes me eager to hear more. He is simply the best.
Great pictures and ideas of how to approach a region to photograph.
Mr. Frans Lanting demonstrated a lot of class during all the sessions. He was an absolute professional and gentleman, what an honor. I learned a lot, and I rediscovered details that either I knew and had forgotten, or that I didn't even realize I knew. I will go back to revisit some specific sessions. Thank you Mr. Lanting.
What was especially enjoyable about this class was feeling like I got to know Tom on a level that would usually only be reserved for real-life interactions. His sense of humour and willingness to answer questions tirelessly were immensely gratifying, and the effort that went into making this class with all of the fieldwork was much appreciated. For anyone with a love of wildlife and photography this is a must watch!
Entertaining and I learned something, but not worth the money for me. Not to be critical about Charly Savely: it's not a bad workshop, but I feel it is totally mis-priced. I found it interesting to hear about Charly Savely, her development and how she managed to become who she is. I found the part about Wildlife Photography specifically rather thin, but it picked up a few interesting tips about editing pictures. Overall, I think it was worth watching the workshop. However, for 149$ including all rebates, I think one could barely justify the price. Had I paid the sticker price of 300$, I'd be really disappointed for what you get out of this. I have bought courses from photographers like David Yarrow, Elia Locardi or Jimmy Chin in the past and they have way more things to talk about or to teach (in depth and scope) for that price or less.
Brilliant and inspiring workshop This workshop was absolutely fantastic. I feel so lucky to have gotten an inside look at Charly's process and how she's developed her style. The videos following her on the photoshoot in Alaska are absolutely breathtaking, they gave me chills. The workshop was filled with so many great tips on how to be a mindful wildlife photographer as well, which is really important for our planet. After having finished this workshop, I definitely feel inspired.
Very interesting class, in a very unusual location (Arctic), which blended together to give a top notch class. I learned a lot about Minimalism as applied to photography, and Minimalism as applied to post-processing. Curtis is engaging while teaching and demonstrating on site, or back in his "office". I really enjoyed this class. Thank you Curtis.
Lovely and information. The information was relevant and ended up helping a good bit.
What made this course so helpful and interesting to me were the videos of being out on shoots, the detailed discussion of various photos, information about camera settings, the various ways of using birds in compositions, and the critiques of submitted photos. Frans' passion for birds really comes out, and it is clear that his extensive research and experience makes him an excellent instructor. I truly enjoyed this class and feel I learned so much.
This is a brilliant course which I can highly recommend. I have done some Minimalist photography but still found the lessons very interesting. I enjoyed the discussion on colour vs. B&W. My favourite part was to learn how long it takes to plan a shoot, wait for the right conditions, even change the subject if the initial idea doesn't work and see the other images taken during the shoot before (or after) the final image. The presentation is excellent - love the cat :-).
Truthfully I have never thought about minimalist photography but took this class out of curiosity. I am now "hooked" on the concept and can't wait to put into practice what I learned in this class. Curtis has an excellent teaching style and never once did I drift off through boredom or lack of interest. Buy this course, you won't be disappointed. Five full stars.
Great class!
Great course. I would highly recommend it. I would liked to have seen more examples besides snow and desert scenes.
This is an excellent introduction to the concepts behind and practice of minimalist photography. While the setting is already somewhat minimalist, Curtis gives great general advice on how to create minimalist photos in any environment using timing, planning your shots, lens choice, and post-production techniques. I'm already a minimalism enthusiast, but I found some new-to-me explanations, ideas and exercises to help me along. Curtis' laid-back manner and unwillingness to take himself too seriously is also quite refreshing.
Really cool class! I wasn't keen on the bloopers at the end of each lesson as they were often somewhat jarring from the topic at hand, but Curtis's personality shone through. Some of the ideas will be harder to implement in my lush tropical landscape, so I lament that the majority of the examples were snow and deserts. I would have liked to see more variety, like cityscapes. Either way, I am looking forward to implementing some of the concepts.
