All right. Picture effect. Now, this may seem like what we just talked about the creative style, but this is where the camorra creates a totally off beat. I would call it a highly photoshopped version of your image is now this is what I call a jpeg fund note. It is not designed for raw shooting, and I wanted to give it a test out. So let's, take a look at some of the effects on the left. We have it turned off. We have a toy camera look, which just looks a little bit more contrast. E. We have one that has enhanced color with the pop color posterized ation retro photo, which is kind of just a faded. A little bit of yellow tent in their soft high key. Seems just like it's lightened up. Partial colors are kind of interesting if you have very dominant colors that you are working with. The hung high contrast model mode, I think, looks pretty good. At least on this subject. The soft focus just throws everything a little bit soft. We have hdr painting, which looks a little garish. In my opinio...

n, the rich monochrome is pretty nice miniature, which blurs the top in the bottom of the frame. And I thought this one look, the trees looked really cool in this illustration and so I think that might not look good on some subjects, but with those trees I really liked that illustration look and so it's a painterly look that you can produce writing camera obviously not something that you're going to want to do on any sort of important photograph but if you want to goof around, this is photoshopped in the camera for you and so that is the picture affect modes then we have picture profile and on this one let's bring in this extra information here this is for all you videographers out there, so if you want to control the look of your movies, there are special tone al it ease and looks that people who are producing movies want tohave because when you are shooting movies, you don't have access to the raw information you're getting a compressed file of this video and this is going to control the look of this now the a seven s is you will see has a couple of extra modes that are not available on the other cameras. Now one of the big things about this camera when it came out is it's got s log gamma and when it came out with I was like what's s log gamma and why are you so excited about this? Well, it's, a very plain, bland look to the video that issued and it's designed for people who are going to go and edit there video, and they're going to color great it, and they're going to make it look matching different scenes and it's going produce its own look, you've probably all seen movies that have a very unique look that's different than other movies just in the colors and the contrast that they use and it's usually, if they done it right, it's consistent throughout the movie and part of that is that they're shooting a very flat tone when they're out there capturing the original information, and then they're working with it on their computers to get it all grated and balanced so that it looks proper. And so, if you are going to be going to that extra level of editing and recording and storytelling, you're going probably want to look into one of these s log options on your cameras, and there are probably people in video are much better versed in than I am that will tell you specifically how to go into it, but not only can you select many of these different modes, which have very different looks, you can go in, and you can customize these with a variety of different settings now, which one's you have will depend a little bit on, you know which model camera you have now. This stuff is not being applied to raw photos. It'sjust happening on the picture profiles, and so you can choose the exact gamma level the need. Did you did you ever have a need to control the knee of your photos? Well, you can do that here in the look, the saturation level and there's all sorts of levels were not going to get into this, but if you want to control the exact look and the way that your camera is recording light, this is how you do it for video. Now, one of the downsides of doing this is that if you produce a really flat look out of your image, it doesn't look very colorful. It's not very interesting and it's a little bit harder to compose. And so the sony a seven s mark, too, has a way to correct for this on ly in the viewfinder so that you have a really nice view of what you're shooting while you're shooting it. But you're still getting that original s log file recorded to your camera, and so you'll see that coming up in a different section. Okay, the zoom feature is kind of a weird thing. I one of the things that I will just mention about sony is that if they conduce something electronically, they will do it. And so if somebody came up with an idea some way of manipulating the photograph digitally, they're going to say, put it in the camera so you can digitally zoom in when you take photos, and we all know that digital zoom at this point is just cropping the image and blowing up middle small portions of the pixels well, it khun do this. If you put the camera in a small or medium j peg mode, you can actually zoom on the back of the camera, and it does make for a very smooth zoom, but you're shooting at a very reduced size, and so I would think the vast majority of users of this camera are never going to use this feature, and there are very limited situations in where you would want to use it because you are recording ah, lower quality image. The focus magnifier on this camera allows you to just zoom in and check focus, and this is going to be good for manual focusing. So let's, do a little live demo with my camera here, go ahead and turn the camera on, and I am going to throw this camera into a full on manual focus mode, so go down here in select manual focus, zoom in a little bit on my subjects over here, and this is something that we would normally have programmed to one of the buttons on the camera so I would choose to program this to c four or c three or one of the other buttons on the camera because diving in here is a very long way of being able to magnify this image and so I'm able to go in and really zoom in and check focus and aiken direct up and down and now I can focus get this? Yes, she could camera in focus right about there. There we go. So now I can shoot a photo and so if you do manually focus a lot, I would highly recommend having one of the accessory buttons set to this magnify function so that you can quickly jump in and magnify and go back to full screen on it. So great we'll feature for anyone using manual focus on a regular basis. Okay, next up, long exposure noise reduction. We have an on and off option here let's kind of hold that there and go to the next one and talk about hi s o noise reduction. So both of these are noise reduction where the camera wants to go in and reduce the noise level of different types of shots. We all know that shooting at a very low iso setting like s a one hundred will give you a very clean image, but if you make certain changes on your cameras either with a long exposure or with using a high I s so you're going to get a very noisy image and there's some things that you can do at this point one eight nothing. Just let it be what it isthe you can let the camera try to fix it, and the camera will do this with its own noise reduction that we're talking about right here in the menu system or you can leave it noisy, bring it into a computer and fix it in the computer. And so this camera has a few little options. Let me stress the little options because there's not much you can do with long explosion noise reduction, you can simply turn it on or turn it off and with the highest. So we do have atleast a low in a normal city for anyone who's, a fairly serious photographer who's got software that they're going to use to work with their images. You khun taken image that has a lot of noise and you can work with it according to the needs that that particular photo has, and so you'll be able to get much, much better results by using a computer and a reasonably good software program for making these adjustments, you can do it in the camera. But it is limited. And so I think most serious photographers are not going to want to be using this. And so this is something that they're going to leave turned off. If you don't want to futz with it later on, you can leave them on their basic sentence.

INCREDIBLE Class! I couldn't find anything on the internet that truly explained this camera, explained what it can and can't do and what accessories would work with it. I have had my Sony A7II for awhile now, but was so overwhelmed by it, I rarely even took it out of its case. It was just easier to use my Canon 5D III. After this class, I am so excited to finally practice with and use my Sony. John is an incredible teacher. He is thorough, professional, fun and knowledgeable! I stored my Sony A7II for more than a year since I've been Canon's user for 7 years and I felt unsure of taking this new camera which implied a different menu system, different functions, a little bit intimidating. Finally, I took a bit of valor, put my camera next to the computer monitor for then start watching this guide and I spent a great time actually. I'm amazed at how helpful and clear is the sequence of the chapters. It was enough to get to chapter ten to know all the basic controls and start taking pictures with an equivalent confidence of my good old Canon, or even better since in the chapter 8th I learned how accurate and easy to use is the focusing system, either, manual or auto (For stills I've always used manual focusing). Very informative, enjoyable and now I became a new fan of the mirrorless cameras, at the point that I'm considering to buy another two :D

John is an excellent teacher! In fact his Fundamentals of Digital Photography 2014 was the first ever class I watched on CreativeLive, and since then I'm in love with his teaching style as well as with CreativeLive! I bought my Sony A7II in March 2015 and when I found out that John is giving a class on it I was very excited! As I expected I learnt many secrets about my camera which I had been using for 9 months already. For example about the option of focusing on the eyes, setting the buttons, making panoramas etc. The camera is still smarter than me I must admit. I am enjoying my Sony even more now since after the class I feel much more confident. Thank you John and CreativeLive for such an opportunity! I would recommend to everyone who has a Sony a7II camera and the other cameras in this line to watch this class. It's a concentrate of useful information, very detailed and to the point.
