Story Structure: Introduction
Now we're gonna shift and we're gonna talk about story structure. So, story structure is the whole everything related to the shape of the story. How does it proceed? What does it look like? What is this thing that you're building? So we start to get into questions about the plot and questions about the protagonist because these things all go into this idea of what is the structure? How is it going to go? And it is the structure of story is something that I consider myself a student of. I just am fascinated by it, and it's kind of ruined me for reading or watching movies or anything (laughs) 'cause I'm constantly going, oh that was an interesting structural thing that they did there (laughs), or what was the author, how is the author gonna pull this off in this structural way? And the thing I always say about structure is that you can steal it. So that's what's great about structure is you can look at what somebody else has done, and it doesn't even have to be in your genre. And you can...
say, I wanna do that. So, you can borrow the structure. It's very much like in music symphony has a certain structure versus some other form of music. And you can say, I'm gonna adopt that shape or structure for what I'm going to write. So it's a really powerful thing to think about. And we're gonna go through a bunch of things that add up to, at the end of the structure segment I want you to be able to really see not, before we were looking at the book at a really high level. Now I want you to be able to see how is it gonna go? How is it gonna unfold?
Do you dream of writing a book but can’t seem to get started? Or maybe you’ve started but can’t quite get to “The End”? You’re not alone! Most people who set out to write a book don’t know how to begin or how to proceed through the development of their story. They quickly get overwhelmed with the sheer number of decisions to be made and often fall into frustration or even despair.
The truth is that creativity alone won’t get your book out of your head and onto the page.In this course, you’ll learn to capture your creative energy and master your craft with a step-by-step plan to build your story from the ground up. You’ll create a framework that can support your book-writing process the same way a foundation holds up a house.
Author, teacher and book coach Jennie Nash will help you learn about your characters, your structure and your story so you can stop staring at a blank page wondering what to write next and instead move forward with confidence. You’ll get to know your story inside and out so that this time, you’ll finally finish your book—and finish strong.
In this class, you’ll learn how to:
