Compositing doesn’t have to be daunting – simple techniques can remedy slight imperfections in a photo or allow you to place your subject in a fantasy world. In Fine Art Compositing, fine art photographer Brooke Shaden will teach you an approach to compositing that will help you enhance – or transform – your images with minimal effort.
Compositing allows you to combine visual elements from multiple sources into one single image. In Fine Art Compositing, Brooke will share easy compositing skills photographers can use every day, like swapping out a blinking eye in a group shot or replacing a hand in a fashion shoot. She’ll also show you more artful applications for compositing – teaching you how to create the illusion of levitation and how to transform scrap fabric into a flowing dress. Brooke will also discuss fine art compositing and how you can create and market composite images that are, despite the use of stock elements, uniquely your own.
In this class, you will learn effective and inspired compositing techniques that will help you create more polished and believable images from an artist who has mastered the craft.
Brooke is an amazing teacher. She is so passionate that really helps you to get into it without getting bored. The course is great and learnt a lot about composition. I liked it so much that I'm about to start my next course with her, so thank you! Definitely recommend the class!
Absolutely outstanding!
Brooke is such an inspiring instructor and person! This course led to many things for me. I bought my first full frame camera, started using photoshop in earnest, and finally got to let out my creative side after spending quite a few years in dormancy. Such a great course!
Brooke is amazing! Such a talented artist, speaker, teacher, and just truly inspirational human. <3
Brooke is incredible as an artist and a teacher. I would get butterflies watching her lessons because I would feel so inspired to go out and create! Thank you so much for sharing your skills with those of us who are so eager to learn!
One of the best courses ever. Brooke explains beautifully and with a great sense of humour.
This is my first course on CreativeLive and I have to say it was awesome. I've learned so much from Brooke Shaden. I am ready to composite and make some magic for my clients. Thanks to Brooke Shaden and CreativeLive!!!
Love this course but I have a major issue. Where is refine edge in the new version of Photoshop on PC. It has feather but I would prefer to use refine edge. Someone please help me!
I loved this course... Thanks, Brooke! Your teaching style is very organic and it helped me to get more comfortable and creative with photo imaging. Your artworks are truly amazing! Thank you, Michelle -x-
I have really enjoyed following Brooke through this course even though it is a few years old. What I learned is that it the creative process Brooke follows is not about Photoshop but using imagination. Her very honest discussion about her own limitations helps others to appreciate you don't have to be perfect to create great art. Well done Brooke. I am bout to start your course on Fine Art Portraits
Love Brooke's Courses, she is so creative.
On the fly course. Mostly basic information with solid bits of takeaway intermixed. Good course but I'd prefer a more methodical approach and organization.
Internal consistence. Brilliantly put!
This is informative thus far but I feel like way too much time is spent just doing stuff on the fly. I prefer an A-B-C approach versus A-Maybe F-then maybe E, then B, etc. Could have been done in half the time.
OMG, this is the best photography class I’ve ever watched. I’m very grateful to Brooke Shaden and CreativeLive. Gracias 🙏
Fantastic class that reminds us that it is possible to create great images with very little. Thank you Brooke <3
Overall, this is a great class, as long as you are not looking for Photoshop info. The course appears to have been created in 2014. That is the earliest comments for it so Photoshop used is from that time. More, Brooke mentions that she is not used to that version because the version she uses is older. At the time the class was created, Brooke knows enough to do what she needs but is not an expert in Photoshop. I think, in many ways, that is key info by itself. You don't need to know everything, but you do need to know enough to accomplish your goals. A few things missing... Social Media info... Brooke is easy to find but her Social Media should have been provided. The Models are referenced by first name only in the videos but no other info about them. People in the class are even harder to get info about. This info matters to me but may not to others. Brooke also mentions that she will be providing people some assets for free through her blog. Again, the link to that blog is not provided, nor the link to the assets. Given the age of the class, finding it in a blog is nearly impossible. The last video is also cut just before Brooke says her closing statement. That said, the content that is valuable is her discussion of how she shoots and combines pictures as well as how she integrates the pictures together. Also, the last 3 videos have a lot of info that is helpful for anyone trying to do this kind of work as a business. So.. Overall, great content if you ignore how she did the work in photoshop as there are better ways to do that today.
Amazing course! So instructive! Love Brooke!
Brooke is a funny and intelligent teacher. I love listening to her creative process and she has inspired me so much in my own photography! I highly recommend this course for anyone wanting to get into Fine Art Photography!
Joyful learning, great content. Brooke is a entertaining and generous. An awesome teacher. I've learned a lot!
I loved it! Brooke Shaden is AMAZING!
Brooke's creative spirit takes us to a dimension often missing from instructors with excellent technical skills. She may not be a PS Guru, or know all the different ways to utilize the PS Suite of Tools, but invites us along for the adventure she has made in using them. To get the most from her sessions, learn the fundamentals of in camera and post processing first. Then experience her lessons to find joy in using them as an artist.
Fantastic. Very precise and helpful hints. Loved it!
I just wanted to say thank you to Brooke. I love how she doesn't focus on the technical aspects so much, and while I know they are important to me as an artist (and I own many classes that teaches these), I actually found the lack of it highlight the little details that are just as important that I often miss due to focussing so much on the technical perfection. I was able to pick up new tools in Photoshop as well as learn very specific details about shooting the actual components. I had so many "a ha!" Moments that my life is forever changed. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! I definitely recommend this course to anyone wanting to improve their storytelling!
As a non-technical photographer myself, I find Brooke's methods extremely relatable. I am comforted that someone who so honestly and ardently OWNS the fact that she isn't the most technical of artists can be so successful - proof positive that the art of creating knows no bounds. The key to mastering Photoshop, at least, for me, is to just get into the program and start playing with it. There are so many free resources out there - far more than when I started playing with this program (which was more than a decade ago, now). Full disclosure: I have been playing with Photoshop since I was 18 (I am almost 35 now), and have been following Brooke's work since I first followed her on Flickr. I know Photoshop very well but still found new ways of looking at my own techniques from her process. This course is definitely suited for more beginner to lower intermediate levels with some Photoshop experience and knowledge of the Photoshop canvas. Pros might not necessarily benefit from these lessons as I found myself fast forwarding through a lot of her shooting and Photoshop essentials (thank goodness I purchased this course on sale). What I did walk away with is a deeper look into her process and her methods of thinking when conceptualizing a shoot, which I then put to practice when attempting my own more involved composites. I, personally, have outgrown her use of textures and layers (I employed those techniques in my early twenties), I have, instead, used her compositing techniques when photographing with strobes and more minimal backgrounds. I hope to be as efficient as she is with her cutting techniques, but at Lesson 21, I have managed to bring back to life my extremely rusty Photoshop compositing skills! I am only halfway through the course but look forward to seeing what else she has in store here.
