These classes are great! The blog is great also!
I'm so impressed with how John simplifies his vast knowledge and experience and explains so clearly! He's an excellent photographer AND instructor.
Even though this was from 2015 and it is now 2021, it was so informative and helpful. I look forward to watching more of his classes. If you don't know what kind of camera to get this is a great starter point!
Very knowledgeable instructor who explained terms in an easy to understand fashion and made the class interesting. Plan to take more classes by Mr. Greengo. I feel much better doing my analysis on buying my first DSLR camera. Thank you for this great opportunity to learn!
John Greengo, wow. That was false advertising. I learned SO much more than just how to choose my first DSLR. You're a star, as soon as I pick up one I'm buying all of your courses.
While I may not be buying my first camera, I'm glad to know I'll be buying the correct one now for my current talent level, and that which I'm aspiring to attain. Thank you much!
The knowledge you accumulate from the content of John's course is empowering. I feel less like a vulnerable newbie in the camera store! Thanks so much.
I found this to be an excellent class for someone who is not technologically oriented. I now find myself much more familiar with the make-up of the camera and the things to note. But I must point out that this class is not up to date and I could not find a class date when it was shot. This means that when I reached the last two lessons on choosing a camera, I was very disappointed because the cameras discussed were not the latest or even the before the latest. So while the course helped me in determining HOW to choose my first DSLR, it didn't help me choose WHICH camera to actually purchase.
I have to thank John Greengo and the CreativeLive staff for another wonderful class. Mr. Greengo is a very good instructor (he has a nice Bob Ross ambiance), very knowledgeable and very technical with the camera and the terminologies. I am very grateful that he has material to download so I can continue to review and learn. I own a DSLR but I never truly understood the baseline technology. I am in the process of purchasing a new camera system and lens for some photography but mostly for filmmaking. With the knowledge I gain by watching this course, I can better choose and identify the features of the future cameras in my upcoming new passion. Thank you CreativeLive and Thank you Mr. Greengo. I am looking forward to attending future classes.
THANK YOU for such informative, clear and concise information.... as an absolute beginner who wants to go beyond point and shoot, this has set me on the good path !!!!
Very good, as always from John, info. Only two things from this I find needs clarifying, maybe, is that a zoom lens is a mutl-focal length lens while a telephoto lens is strictly a prime lens. That aspect is like engine and motor. Society uses, erroneously, the word motor for engine but a motor is electric while an engine use liquid fuel. Not about photography nor meant as a criticism, but for me, as an avid reader and language learner, the lack of the proper use of is/are and the pronunciation of the name Neecone very "in your face" apparent. Mild rant done, keep on providing the informative classes, John. You are my favorite on the tech aspect of photography. Thanks.
very clear, easy to understand and follow. John is a great communicator/presenter! so glad I discovered creativelive and John Greengo!
Wow - John is an amazing teacher and total natural. I've taken a couple of different photography classes but none have been as clear as this one. Looking forward to taking his Fundamentals class next
I had no knowledge of cameras other than the basic terms that are thrown out there, but never really understood their true meaning until now, I have never seen such straight forward videos demonstrating the components of a camera . Every single video was so informative, easy to understand, and interesting that I could not stop watching video after video, today after work I could only think to come back to continue watching the videos. I have been debating investing on a camera for the last few years, and with so many options out there it just made it confusing and I could not make up my mind on what to buy, after watching this course I feel relieved, I can now buy a camera based on all the information given and that will meet my needs, instead of what I hear, or what a salesperson tries to sell me. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEOS!!! IT IS MY FIRST SESSION ON CREATIVELIVE, AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO WATCH THE MANY MORE VIDEOS AVAILABLE!!!
I can't express how fortunate I feel to have stumbled across John's classes. I have taken many other classes over the years and have usually felt totally overwhelmed and went no where with them. I am a visual learner so this was made for me with complex material delivered in a clear concise manner. I have been struggling as to what camera to upgrade to and you have given me the tools to delve into the next step. Thanks again.
I must say I am impressed with this course. I started it and I couldn't stop until finished... Super well-structured and I finally understood many concepts I heard before but no one bother to explain (or didn't know how to). I only wished I had seen this course before I rushed into my current camera (yeap, I got that bundle/starter kit). I definitely recommend this class.
I am a complete novice to photography and found this class absolutely useful and practical. The instruction was clear, relevant, and offered in an engaging tone. Mr. Greengo knows how to lead a class; he makes it easy to follow him and watch lesson after lesson. He delivers substantial information in a very accessible and not overwhelming manner. I very much appreciated the class, will most definitely be taking the photo starter kit and the fast start camera specific one. Thank you so much Mr. Greengo!
This was a great class. I already had an idea of the direction I wanted to go as I start my new business, but this class really helped me focus on the most important upgrades I need to make to my current system. I was particularly impressed with the visual graphics used to explain the technical functions of cameras and how those functions affect image quality and camera use. I would highly recommend this class to anyone who wants to up their camera system and I am looking forward to taking the classes that are specific to the camera systems I am using. I would love to see a class on image processing and getting the most out of editing software. Great Job! Glad I signed up for CreativeLive.
So glad I found this course it help me learn about the other products on the market and helped me in picking my new camera. I would recommend this course to anyone who needs some guidance in their choice.
Fantastic class for the beginner! So glad I stumbled upon this in my search. I definitely feel more knowledgeable and and have a lot more direction for choosing the best possible camera that fits my needs.
These classes are great! The blog is great also! My photography has come a long way since following.
If you are considering this class, then you probably already know how daunting the process of buying a DSLR can be especially for beginners. IMO, that's not an accident. The manufacturers put just enough features in each of their models to make them attractive. Add in all the techno jargon and you can really drive yourself crazy. That's where John comes in. This class will take you from A-Z on all the things you should be thinking about when looking for a new camera. At the very end of the class John gives his recommendations on what cameras one should consider depending upon the type of photographer you are or hope to be. I was happy to find that my independent research seemed to be confirmed by what he said and that I was on the right track. Great class, and great teacher. Highly recommended.
Simply! AMAZING
I have been an educator and public speaker for many years and can say that John is the best Teacher I have come across. I have spent at least 100 hours online researching and trying to learn the basics before my major purchase of a good camera. This tutorial video taught me more than all those hours online. He made the complicated make sense and I felt confident in not only ordering a Nikon D7200 as my entrance camera into photography, but I also gained enough knowledge to buy it without the kit and ordered two good prime and one 17-50 zoom that were much better quality than the kit lenses. I did look for deals and ended up spending about the same as the kit would have cost at Costco. I intend watching every photography class that John has taught. Great job..... Ann Reetz
I went for some photography lessons. At the first lesson, I was told that I did not have a camera that had the capabilities of what I wanted to achieve. The tutor was just being open and did not want to waste my lessons. He gave me some pretty good ideas, but said I should do some research and buy a different camera before coming back. This is a fantastic tutorial and has given me in laymans terms exactly how and why I should buy a certain camera. Really really recommend this!
