Fundamentals of Photography

take portraits of personality.
If you aren’t offering headshot photography services, you are missing out on a huge opportunity. The demand for professional headshots has proliferated in recent years and in this class Peter Hurley will teach you shooting and selling techniques that will help you land that business.
A headshot can quickly communicate personality and create connection. In How to Take the Perfect Headshot, Peter will teach you how to quickly and consistently capture a person’s personality by identifying and photographing their best side. As a photographer you need to walk into your session with a plan. Peter will teach you the keys to this plan and offer tips on coaching your subject through the process and helping them relax in front of the camera.
I was a little reluctant to invest my time here because of some of the reviews, but I am walking away with 2+ pages of actionable notes. I loved this class. Hurley’s enthusiasm is infectious and his take on societal beauty standards just blew me away. This was a productive enough hour and a half for me that I now plan to check out his other classes. A winner in my book.
Peter is full of energy and entertaining and while he may spend more words than necessary to make his point, he does present information in this video that is practical and useful in 2020. Wish there had been more shooting and some discussion of his post processing work.
Love this course! Peter Hurley is straight to the point on getting that amazing head-shot and showing you how to step up your head-shot game! I discovered Peter through a director friend of mine that he has previously photographed and I have been a fan ever since. THANK YOU PETER for sharing your knowledge!
I thoroughly enjoyed this class when it aired for free. I really liked Peter Hurley's delivery style! He's a lot of fun and I love how passionate he is. I'm not a headshot photographer but I'll be looking to begin after watching this! I'm not sure I'd pay $29 but it was certainly entertaining and informative.
Peter Hurley is AWESOME! I hate shooting portraits but he makes me feel like I can do it . . . and have fun too!
I can understand why some people would give Peter Hurley a negative review. But I will sit through all of his talking to get some of his knowledge. He's self-taught like a lot of us, and the stories about his journey through the photography world are just as instructive to me as his knowledge of lighting. He has been in the room with some of the best photographers on earth. Who wouldn't want to know what he learned from them? To find out, you have to listen to him talk about himself. Small price to pay, in my opinion. More Peter Hurley, please!
It looks Peter got some coaching from Sue Bryce on how to substitute the class with themselves. A lot of emotion and assertiveness and not much else.
Should have read the reviews first. I unknowingly bought two of peter's headshot classes on sale. This is a master class in being Peter Hurley.
Wow! could anyone talk more about themselves?
I enjoyed this course and got a lot out of it - Peter affirmed the importance of it being my job to warm up the client. Good tips on lifting the head. I already work in the field, have my go-to settings etc so this suited me very well
Lots of excellent tips and I although there was some self promotion, I didn't mind. I like Peter and appreciate his enthusiasm and willingness to share his know how. My headshot photography has improved ten fold, thanks to Peter.
Shabang!
So far the best class I have watched from Creative Live. I like them all but Peter Hurley never gets boring and still keeps it very informative. Thanks!
I'm disappointed with this class. You can skip at least the first 50 minutes, where he's mostly stroking his ego. The last 30 minutes he actually gets into taking headshots, but I was already over it by then. Save your money.
Wow! I couldn't have put it better myself. This guy is so full of himself. I felt like I was watching a Peter Hurley infomercial. Yes, his shots are gorgeous, but I've been watching for more than 20 minutes and the only thing I've learned is to have people move their eyebrows. Someone at Creative Live should have made sure this guy could teach before they wasted our money. I wish I'd read the reviews before paying for this class (Give us our money back!). I honestly can't stand another minute of listening to him.
I love Peter Hurley's work but when I purchase a "course" from Creative Live titled How to Take the Perfect Headshot, I don't want to hear stories about his first studio or his modeling days. I just want to learn about Taking the Perfect Headshot. No offense but I am a visual learner and I need to see photographers in action rather than hearing them talk about everything else but taking a headshot. Save your money and buy the Lighting Challenge with Felix Kunze.
Peter Hurley loves Peter Hurley. I am glad this infomercial sprinkled with information was inexpensive. Needless to say, not a fan.
It was mostly self promotion. There was very little information. I viewed classes on CreativeLive by other photographers and all were a lot better than this. For this kind of self promotion and lack of teaching, this class should be free.
I enjoyed this class and Peter Hurley's personality. Even though it was only 90 minutes (c'mon, it was priced right), I was able to walk away with a few new ideas on how to approach headshot photography. I think that the technical part wasn't as informative, but that wasn't what this course was about IMO. I didn't feel he was too "sales-pitchy" or that he talked about himself too much like some others have stated. I thought he made the course fun and easy to watch, and elaborated very well about the importance in facial expressions and getting your client comfortable in front of the camera.
Inspiring, informative and entertaining—a perfect intro to Peter Hurley. I've taken other classes with Peter, and he is the best teacher, photography or otherwise, that I have ever had.
I left this class with a page full of notes, completely inspired to change the way I've been shooting headshots. They were always so boring to me, but now I'm actually excited to get out there and practice the methods Peter talked about. I truly believe that my business is going to be more profitable now. That being said, be prepared to hear quite a few sales pitches, especially for products that are quite pricey. Someone else mentioned that this course was an "infomercial" and I agree. Also, he doesn't get into his lighting setup or the technical aspect of his shoots like I thought he was going to. He brushes over them pretty quickly. That was disappointing. I had to pause the video a few times and draw diagrams of his setups. Overall, if you can get through the sales pitches, there is some very useful information for a class that only costs $19.
Very charismatic. enjoyed it as entertainment. just by watching him you know what are Shticks. He is secure in further promoting his recognition. He is very enthusiastic about head shot and his enthusiasm is very contagious. Fun to watch. worthwhile. I love his character because he is direct, New Yorker and I am an Israeli, much similarity. Y. I really enjoyed this video. Peter Hurley "shoots between the eyes"; no guessing what he's thinking or wants...he says exactly what needs to be said. Which I really like about him. Most people are asking what kind of equipment photographers use, no problem here...he tells you want he shoots with and what equipment he uses and what settings he uses on his camera. He's funny, honest and talented. Even with this short video, a person can come away with a valuable point or two to help them get the headshot.
