Fundamentals of Photography

Create dynamic portraits when you know the fundamentals of lighting
Peter Hurley kept the class moving, describing his style of headshots. I did find it to be a bit repetitive in the material, however he was building on his style, explaining and expanding. Not always the way I would set-up and go with every headshot gig, but a good starting place, especially if shooting multiple headshots, and the customer(s) want a uniform look.
Really enjoyed watching this - very real. Would love to photograph Calum. Interesting look and really handsome :)
Loved everything about this whole course and all the little nuggets of wisdom, knowledge, things to keep an eye out for, the finer details!! It made me realize some of the areas I had went wrong in the past and how to trouble shoot those and carry it across into my other work as well! Thank you so much Peter!
This was a great course I love the way Peter teaches very informative and so easy to understand going from basic lighting to advanced lighting I learned a lot from this course, now to put into practice. Looking forward to the next one really inspired to do headshots and portraits now. Thank you, Peter.
Thank you Peter for this course. You are not the number 1 headshot for nothing. I liked your technique. I also bought your latest book. after having followed your 3 trainings. I am sure your mother would be very proud of you (peace to her soul).
First of all: I do recommend. Don‘t understand why some people are not able to watch the entire course. He‘s doing some kind of live shootings applying, explaining and testing different light settings (which may not help professionals but bring amateurs at least one step further I think), preparing everything etc. Of course, you have to fill the time in between and that‘s what he does. Either you like the style or not. However, he also shows how to interact with people during shootings and meanwhile doing the actual work. For me, this has two advantages: its some kind of entertaining as well as he keeps the course alive. This is not a compressed course overloaded with tons of information by lasting 1 hour and your‘re done. If you want that, your‘re wrong at this course. For my own, I feel strongly inspired to test some setups as well as experiment with different kinds of light (cont., strobe...) and its resulting effects. Moreover, I‘m much more motivated for working with people. Finally, it’s just what you want to get out of it ;) Thanks Peter.
This is a great class! Never a dull moment! I love how real Peter is and how he shows trial and error. I feel so much more at ease and confident after watching him troubleshoot and explain the lighting techniques at the same time. I really learned a lot! Thanks so much.
Great course! Love the way of teaching and also the personal stories. Can totally relate to that. Cannot understand the negative comments here. Very entertaining too!
I wish I'd of asked for a refund on this class as less than halfway through the course I realize I can't follow the way he teaches....I simply can't. I've not completed the course, I was bored of the blah blah blah. I like Peter and think he is funny and sweet but his style of teaching has me yearning for something else. He talks too much about things other than Lighting which is what I was paying for to get this course...to much me me me..I bought this to learn lighting, not to get to know Peter and his daily past life in modeling! CL...can I get a refund please???
I was just curious about the bad reviews and I found it ridiculously funny. These reviews are about Peter's attitude than his techniques, Don't write an essay about your emotions, write something that would be logical and help others. If you want to talk about your emotions take a course here about emotions, there's a lot of great classes they offer. I personally don't care about how you feel emotionally about a guy, I want to know if his techniques are effective, stop wasting my time. Thank You, I have watch his stuff and their useful
lots of nuggets here. i think what a lot of people are missing is the fact that he has a "routine" going. He can be a bit of an ass but it's making the models relax and enjoy themselves vs "1-2-3 -- Say Cheese".
I read reviews that complain about teachers selling themselves. That's crazy. Just ignore personalities, and accept that for about a hundred bucks, nobody is going to share their entire life's worth of experience and knowledge. The things I learn from one minute of watching Peter Hurley change my entire perspective for the better every time. There was enough to learn from this class to put me on the next level of professional skill. It paid for itself after one session that got me a on very big agent's referral list. Thanks. Peter!
YES IT4S VERY INTERESANT
good info on lighting faces thank you
I've taken classes, bought his book, watched youTube vids, talked to him personally - and the guy is GOOD. I realized that the most recent comments are coming from the West coast Seattle area (?) and you all are so laid back that the New York persona is difficult to get into. Don't let that stop you from learning from Peter. He is one of the best, if not THE best headshot photographer around and his teaching is right on. But I can understand why some of you didn't feel a connection with him as he is New York City personified. I'm a New Yorker, born, brought up - and then moved away. to California. I saw it from a distance. It's a New York culture and once you catch on, you will learn a lot from Peter. So hang in there! He has a lot to offer. D. Russo/Florida
Yes, recommended BUT i wish it was less about Peter's life and anecdotal stories and more about learning how to to actually use the light(s). His stories/examples go on way to long IMO. He sure is funny and i watch all his videos online but if you are going to pay $100 for this it should be more about the "learning".
Wonderful course! Thank you, Peter!
So, the content was good, but the delivery style didn't work well for me. When he is on task, he does a good job. But he frequently drifts off task to incorporate much too much self-discussion and self-promotion. I am not interested in his segues about his prior modeling career or flirtation with participating in the Olympics. It is fine to give a flavor for who you are, but I will not pay for a course to hear all about you, even if the other content is great.
Really !! One of the best courses! Mr.Peter is a very pleasant person , it's easy to follow his explanation , even for beginners like me.! A year ago i decided to quit my job at a multinational company and i decided to follow my dream , to become a pro photographer.Hopefully , i will... , thanks to photographers like mr Peter Hurkey or mr.Joe Buissink or others .. , who shares their experiences. In case mr . Peter will do any workshop in Europe or Romania , i will be there."For those with negative comments - Don't watch . Really !! ". So mr.Peter , you have note 10 from my side. Hopefully i will participate one day at your live presentation. Wish you all the best . Dutulescu Florin / Romania / Alba Iulia city.
I have watched a lot of PH videos. The one who put out years ago was the best. Now days he sounds like an infomercial.
Shabang! I'm really enjoying the class. This course feels like a workshop with step by step demo on every piece of theory and with tons of details. Great energy and casual teaching style. Totally recommended, worth the investment. Thank You Peter, John and CL
It has been a struggled to decide on what type of review to leave. Overall, I think there is enough info and insight into Peter's methods and interactions to warrant positive feedback. He takes you through his signature lighting and shows you how to recreate it with a range of gear from expensive to affordable. He also walks you through his beginnings and how he arrived at where he is creatively, something that is always fascinating when coming from successful folks. The negative is that we essentially ran out of time before we moved past shooting headshots. Bottom line - if you want to gain insight on how the one of the best in the world shoots faces and poses and interacts w/ models, this is a great class and absolutely worthwhile. For overall portrait setups, I would look elsewhere.
He rocks, he is SHABANG !!! Great course and I would recommend it. If you prefer a quiet and relaxed style then this course might not be for you.
I was anxious to start learning new skills... But, Peter is not organized in this course. I assume that this is not what he thought it will be and seems in a hurry to do everything at once. Poor audience!
I'm loving this no-nonsence teaching approach, fast and to the point, with so much information and innumerable lighting set-up's I can put into practice immediately. I've put this class on my wish-list and if I hadn't just bought even more Creative Live classes recently, I would have bought this class immediately. Highly recommended!
