Play Back

Down toward the bottom of the camera let's talk about playback so hit the playback button. It's gonna switch the camera over to playing back all the images that you've shot. We have our dial for controlling forward and back of our images. If we want to jump a little more quickly, we've got a lot of images. You turn the front dial. It will jump ten images and this is something you can go in and adjust in the customization of it. The magnify button, you'll use that in conjunction with the dials of the camera as well as the little joy stick to navigate around what you want to zoom in on. We can erase images with garbage can there and then we can do a combination of protecting images and adding voice memos. So I want to give you a little demo on this and so let's go ahead and playback an image. Now let's find something a little bit more in focus. We don't want to do that one. Okay, let's just call this one good enough right here. So if I just hit this button here, it's gonna add a lock w...

hich you can see turning on and off up here. And so that will prevent that image from being deleted so if I try to delete that image, let's see what happens. It's protected, won't allow me to do it. Okay, so we'll cancel that but the microphone, and you'll see there's a microphone right next to it. If I want to leave a voice annotation on it, what I can do is I can hold in and it's gonna take a second or two and then it will start recording. Okay so that is protected, we got that, let's okay, we are now recording. We were not able to record before because it was protected and so I can go back and I can then protect that as well. Now how do I play this back, well, it's not designed to be played back in the camera. It's something you would play back on your computer but I can switch this camera over. I need to go in to a setting right down here and I am gonna change this mode so I can actually play it back. And so now when I play this image back, you'll see we have the little musical note up here and if I play this, I am going to lean in so you can hear. [Camera Recording] We are now recording, we were not able to record before because it was protected. And so you can add a little voice annotation to an image, a lot of sports photographers will do this during a big play and that they want to come back to. If you're doing it with travel photography, you take somebody's photo, you can have them just list out their email address right there so you don't have to take notes. And so there a lot of different creative ways you can use that voice annotation in there. It's a neat little thing to control and to have to add onto your photographs just to keep notes of what's going on and what you're doing with particular images. So lots of things in the playback and we can go in and we can control those voice memos as you saw me do by going into custom operations, Page 6, to go in and customize that button to work slightly differently. When you play back images you can hit the info button and it will go through and give you different bits of information in there. And I want to show you a little bit more on the back of the camera so let's do a little demo here. So let's play back an image. And so by pressing the info button we get either more or less information and this is the secret screen right here that's very cool. Because if you'll notice over here, there's a little scroll bar and if we start working with our little joy sticks we can get all sorts of data in here. And so now we can go through our images and looking at this particular information down here and so some of them are a little bit more useful like I like the ones that show me my shutter speed and aperature and more of my camera settings where I like the color histogram. And so you can find one that is useful for what you're doing and then you can take a look at the data for all of your images and so on and off with the info button, cycles through the different options, and then using the joy stick to go up and down to control the information that you're looking at. And you can control which one of these options you see in the menu with the view finder display. If you don't like looking at one of those you can uncheck that box and not have that option come up. So just pay attention to that scroll bar so that you can scroll through all of that extra information. So when you are in the playback mode you can hit the quick menu again and this will give you a shortcut to a number of other things that you can do with your image. We're not going to go through all of these. Most of this stuff you don't need if you are going to be using post-production software. But if you want to use it, it's there and it's available for use. You know when I saw you could rate images in a camera a couple generations back, I thought that was kind of a dumb thing. Why would you waste your time rating it in a camera. Just download it to your computer and look at it until I was stuck in an airport with nothing to do and all I could do was look at images on the back of my camera and at least it gave me a head start on my editing of my images. It's not the biggest screen, it's not the best way to review images but it's a way for you to kind of get a head start on your editing process. You can go in, you can crop images and you can take raws and you can turn them into jpegs in case you want to send them out a little more quickly. And so there is a number of little things that you can do in here. Most of these things, as I say,not a lot of people are gonna work with on a regular basis but they might be just the ticket for helping you out in a situation where you don't have access to a full computer for downloading.

I quite enjoyed John's course on the 1DX mark ii. To be frank, I should have taken it 122,000 shots ago when I bought the camera. I learned quite a bit. There were only a few occasions when I thought my cranium could explode. But I walked away from the course with some great tips and in the grand scheme of things, the money I invest in education is always more valuable than the latest and greatest camera strap, lens, or bag. It will probably take a few months for all of the information to sink in but I'm feeling good about what I learned and the price I paid for it. All in all, a good value.

John does a great job as usual. He provides so many visual aides and demonstrations which really helps you understand how to operate and set up your camera. His step by step explanation of the entire menu and each tab is excellent. In addition to his many photography tips and instructions. What an excellent class and a great value for all the detailed instructions provided. Much better than the manual you get in the box. Plus you get to watch this as many times as needed. I highly recommend this course and all of John's other classes.

Great video. Loved the clear explanations, great views and mixture of video and slides. Iā€™ve read a lot of manuals and books on settings and use of various Canon cameras but this is the first time Iā€™ve really understood the full range of functions.
