Class Introduction
So this is one of these things were going to create as many icons as we possibly can in 90 minutes. So better put your seatbelt on because we're gonna create a lot of awesome things and the process. We're going to show you all the tips and tricks that I've developed over the years, and we're gonna make it happen. So today's theme is we're going to do everything you'd find in the kitchen. So what I've done is I've set up my illustrator file and one of the main things about creating icons is setting up a grid structure to make it a lot easier for these items to fit and snap to the grid structure for consistency sake. So I've created an illustrator file on one of the first things I'm going to Dio is go under my illustrator preferences under my guides and grid, and I work in millimeters. And so I've set up my units and increments here to be in millimeters. You can use pixels you can use points. Doesn't really matter what measurement system you use. I'm just going to use something that's ve...
ry easy for me to build in and using millimeters It's great easy to divide everything by 10 and you're going to see why. Because one of the ways that I work with this is how to make sure everything is consistently size. So I set up my units in millimeters general, meaning all of my measurements and then the stroke and millimeters as well. I'm gonna set up a grid system and the grid system could be a little bit weird. I set up a grid line and the grid lines that you see, I have set up every 100 millimeters and just to give you a quick preview of what you see here, the grid lines here are the main lines that you see on the page. The subdivisions are going to be the lesser lines in between here, so the subdivisions are every 20. So if we go through here, you can see these little subdivisions. You can set it up however you'd like. But one of the things I recommend is when you set this up, make sure you sent the grid lines to be the same measurement as you have in your units here, or else you'll get weird little tangents of units. So this is how I set it up. You can set it up. However, you like whatever you feel comfortable with. This is what I'm used to doing. But the main thing is set up a grid structure so that everything can snap to it. And when I say snapping to the grid, that means whenever I draw anything, I'm gonna have it automatically snap to the grid so that I don't have this end up in any area in between the grit. What this does is this gives me consistency for all the shapes that I draw. And I have the ability to just snap them. If I want to make something the same size, it's very easy. And that snap to grid, we could go under review menu and we can go down and turn on our snap to grid. I also turned off my snap two point snap. The point is, when we are trying to draw something and we'd like it to snap back to the original point, um, snapping to the grid will allow me whenever I draw anything. Move scale a rotate. It will always go to the grid so I can turn that on. I also want my grid on as well. Here's a few shortcuts. If you want to quickly hide the grid command apostrophe snap to grid shift command apostrophe. Every once in a while, we need to turn the snap to grid off. We're gonna show you that, but turning the grid on having it set up in a way that you know and understand that you can use and then being able to snap things to it, those of the very important things that we have.

This class was amazing! I knew very little about Illustrator going in, and feel so much more comfortable with the tips and tricks Jason shared. Just sitting and watching how Jason breaks down everyday objects into easy to create shapes is fascinating and inspiring! I'm excited to be able to review these classes at my leisure and continue to apply everything.

Just watched the live session - thank you so much!! There were so many tips in there I had no idea (and graphic school never showed us). The colour session was especially awesome. Thanks again.
