Mid-Level Class

so, yeah, let's start off by talking about in general. What? What did these offer? That in that last class you couldn't get and will lead into who then four. But the offer were really these start to offer something more substantial. Build quality. This is the Olympus M five, which are misnamed earlier, which, under Nate has to control dials, which again just makes taking control of the camera that bit more fun. If you're having to dive around in menus and constantly repurpose the one dial to change aperture and then change exposure compensation that that can be fiddly and it discourages you from doing it. At this level, you're much more likely to have to dials. So you've got most of the settings you need close to hand on. That just makes getting involved in the photographic process that bit more from and the focus is better as well. In these typically mean cameras like the, um one, which is the model, I guess which sits above the five. You know, that's about the closest thing we found.

Dear Salon focus. Okay, really, so far in Marinus. Very, very, very quick responses. My other favorite thing about this camera is the incredible five access image stabilization system in it. The sensor actually floats magnetically. It's pretty crazy, actually, It actually floats right inside there, said. You can't get the camera close enough to see it, but when you turn it on, this sensor will actually pop up and suspended in space. And even as you rotate the camera, it's actually a little It'll move and float around in the chamber. It's pretty. It's pretty amazing. And it's It's very, very effective. Azzan Amnesty built in image stabilization that works with all the lenses you can attach to it. On this level, you'll tend to find the cameras are often bundled with slightly better lenses. So, for instance, this is the new Nick on D 5300. Um, as you move up from the 1st 200 which tends to be bundled with 18 to 55. Thing is, this is kitted sitting in the U. S. With the 18 to 140 millimeter zoom much more flexible lens, considerably more expensive. But that's all that's true of a lot of these cameras. Confusingly in Europe, the Defect 300 is bundled with the 18 55. But in the US, for now, at least, that's the That's the options. And again, if we look at that, this is the Fujifilm X two. It's a step up from the X m one we looked at a moment ago. Things comes bundled with an 18 to 55 millimeters zoom. That sounds like the sort of thing you'll get on most DSLR, but this has an F 2.824 maximum aperture. It's one of the nicest kit lenses we've seen its image stabilized. So that's one of the one of the main things you get over and above the entry level model. Because a lot of I mean a lot of the kit lenses wouldn't even go toe 2.8, right? No, no, literally 3.5256 which is fine. You know, it's a kid's wing, but the Fujifilm lens there in which is quite right, it really is very, very, very good, and I took it out. It must be months ago, expecting it to just be a kid. It's very well, that's good to know, because a lot of people who are buying to this range are might not be buying a second lens at this point, even though they could, but they might be starting. It's priced accordingly a price. But it is nice that you might think from specifications. Alright, alright, so again in this in this in this category we're talking about both the mirror less cameras and so Lars here. So same question is, is in the entry levels. Tell me about image quality in the Marylise ones versus the deal Ours. Well, at this level three entry level, we have things like Nick on one, which has a one inch sensor. By the time we get up to mid range, it's really only a PSC or 4/3 sensor sizes on these air, both a big step up from a one inch sensor on are the sizes you'll tend to find in DSLR. So in terms of image quality, there's essentially no difference. Um, the difference is really come down to focus tracking okay, by this level, the focus systems and DSLR getting pretty sophisticated. But if you're just taking photographs of static subject or something, you just need a single shot off. In many cases, the mirror less cameras will be faster for that single focus acquisition, been a DSLR, and that finally comes down to lens design as well, with the lenses being able to be made smaller. They have lighter elements. They have a glass of them. Sometimes, you know, focused could be much, much, much quicker. DSLR lenses have to drive a lot more weight sometimes. No. Sometimes you can hear them driving that way. So in this category, tell me about the advantages of mere lis again. Sum that up again. What about other accessories that you can put on their other lenses? Can you use other lenses than the ones I mean you've got? If you look at the Olympus system there, India, I'm actually physically and one specifically because that this is a micro 4/3 camera natively micro thirds lens ranges. Now what would you say earlier on five years old? So there's a tunnel lenses out there from Panasonic from Olympus and from third parties, so you can put three. This is this is expandable as far as you want to go. Plus, also, it's specifically reason I picked this one the year one can accept 4/3 lenses, which is what micro 4/3 grew out off. Okay, so that's Olympus and Panasonic lenses from pre 2000 and they work really well, and you can probably find them out. Imagine for less. I mentioned that going up now, everyone out there no true a couple months ago, Um, in. And that sort of leads into one of the other advantages of Marylise. I mean, not only of these cameras significantly smaller, this'd slightly unfair comparison with these lenses on, but because it's much because it's much thinner, there's room to fit all sorts of different adapters in front of the center, and you can fit almost any lens that's ever been made onto the front of one of these cameras. Bar an adapter, which, you know it just means half an hour on the they. You can find all sorts of all sorts of old lenses. You'll have to manual focus them. But a lot of these cameras have tools. Teoh tools to do that, so you can you can sort of pick up 19 seventies crimes, things like contacts for which the system no longer really exists, and you can adapt them onto these cameras on that again, just gives you access to all of these lenses, where a new version would probably be a lot more expensive. It's a lot of fun. Is almost one things you can do with wireless cameras because they're designed for electronic viewing. You looking straight through the lens all the time, you can put anything on the front of them. I mean, I was in Japan a couple weeks ago. Andi was in a huge camera store of the sort that they have in Tokyo, and they were just Karen. It's full of Chinese and agent of third party adapters for whatever lens you could think of is amazing. You know, for all the systems, all the mirror systems theory thing to bear in mind. There she, specifically with 4/3 is there is quite an aggressive court factor applied. Okay, the sensor is smaller, so every focal length lens you put on there is doubled. If you've got an old 50 millimeters said that you want to put on 4/3 Cameron, you can and you find the right of doubt, but it becomes a 100 millimeters, so it's no longer quite the same. Great for portrayed. If you got an a P s C like the this is the same one. But really any a PSC interchangeable camera they all have. Adapter is available. That's only a 1.51 point six crop factors. So it's a little bit less aggressive. Always got to keep in mind that crop factor. I think that's something that a lot of newbies don't necessarily believe. Your stand talk about that more used to be just to for months now there. All right, so let's get into final recommendations for this mid range category. Well, on the mirror side of things, we're big fans of the om D E m five from Olympus. It's just got lovely dear. So last hour controls. It's got a really nice electronic viewfinder, resulting LCDs Well, uh, tilting display. For if you do insist on shooting over your head was a good video, too. That's true. Something screens, but also the Fujifilm X two, which has just been released a couple of tweaks over the XY one. But it's just become a really nice Cameron much faster it focusing again, lovely electronic viewfinder. But there are still some really nice s allows in this class. The Nikon D 5300 or if you're a little bit of a budget reaching over the Pentax K has twin twin control dials. It's whether sealed, it's got a glass Penta prism. It's really impressive spectacle. Yeah, it is a fantastic value camera. Actually, it's a glass panel prism with 100% coverage, which is incredible. I mean, the trend mild strategy of this is that a lot of people that they don't really realize why that's a big deal. I was just gonna ask you It's very unusual finding cameras at this price point. This is. I forget the express of this. I think it's written down here. Someone. Yeah, so about $ with kids. I mean, that's a really good price for 100%. If you find it means that when you take a picture through the through the optical finder here, everything in the everything in the viewfinder will be in the picture. There's no 5% of the edges that you could get surprised by it. 100% of you that standard in Elektronik finders like mirror less cameras, right, But it's typically bean traditionally for expensive in this at all okay. And it requires a bigger piece of glass. Generally speaking, so that is the case. It is not like it is pretty heavy. Yeah. Substantial. It's It's a decent, solid camera. Does feel solid. Yeah, awesome. What else in that category are ready to move on? I think we're ready to move. I think we can use the standard way touched on the M one, which is the kind of model that sits above the five. And that's certainly in the next category. Do you want to go through and talk about? All right. So the next category again, the next level of these again. Same. The interchangeable lens, or still can changed out. The lenses were still look, talking about both muralists and things. Yes, in general, in class. And I guess the we used one of these. Yes, very loosely. And, you know, just because we know what it means, what we mean by it. But really, what we mean by is people who are buying a camera, having used advanced cameras before. I don't know what you're doing. You're enthusiast photography. You're not a novice. Yeah, it's really people who who? Taking photographs as much for the joy of taking photographs as necessarily the end results. It's not just about taking snapshots. It's about going out and enjoying the experience of taking the photographs, really wanting to take control of the camera. Yeah, that's crucial. So at this level, we're talking about things like the Nick on D absolutely covered in external controls. It, you know, if you're a beginner, it would seem incredibly intimidating. But once you've really got into photography, you really appreciate the abilities just changed. White pants with the button pressing has been of the dial. Andi. Even when you've got the camera to your eye, you can change a lot of these settings without having Teoh haven't stop and think about it. You also have the status LCD on top, where the beginner cameras don't have that. Yes, you can tell your settings at a glance, and you know that they're designed to. You could make them point and shoot. They could be, is pointing to you want there's always absolutely, but that's not what your bank already in these people who really want to dig deep into the menu system in the control, you know, feature set Andrea take control over it. Also, customization is hugely important in the past. I mean, decent. 100 got yards and yards of custom functions in any of it. Things like the, um, war. I mean, this every control point on this, I think can be reassigned pretty pretty. It's an extraordinary degree of customization. And, you know, actually, to Olympus has credit. They do build it in lower down? Yes, in their ranges as well, Which is arguable wisdom to that sometimes, because it can be very, very, very dense. But yeah, you can change the function of any of these controls almost once, you know? Yeah. So you can You can have it set up. So it tapes of the economics that you'll particularly used to and you can Yeah. It's great. What is the price range here that we're talking about in this in this category? $1000.100 dollars. Either side, pretty much say, Well, because all of these models have been replaced quite recently that they're all selling around, then recommended selling price. So we're talking sort of maybe 11 to $1400 body only, um, about sort of Yeah, maybe 11 to £ in your in your So So if this is a step up in price, talk again about about image quality versus the sort of the last round resolution. I think it's the big one with that image quality. Yeah, I would, Yes, a large. I wouldn't. I wouldn't say you'd expected a huge change in image policy. The D 7100 has the same sensors to be 5300. So what? Your main getting is, you know, yet more substantial build external control points. In the case of the neck on, you're getting the ability to control remote flashes. You're going to build him Focus motor on the M one. You have a really nice WiFi system. You've got a really clever system that gives you, um that gives you access to multiple controls using the same bottom. So I can just I can press this button and it'll have one function flick a switch and suddenly has got another means You have to learn it a bit. Mawr once you're used to it, it's a really, really classed camera to use. This'll has an external flash synch port, so it's really you know, you get alot, bells and whistles. It's more of everything against this price bracket. And the reason I mentioned resolution is that this is the point at which you see cameras like the December 100 which have slightly modified sensors so they don't have what's called 90 a leasing filter on the sensor. Okay, not something, you know, enormous amount about but anti anything filters slightly below the image to prevent a crazy patterning from happening in really high resolution, sometimes like shirt with lots of lines on it, or something like that. Onda uh, they reduce resolution by fraction. So that decent to 100. And I think the deepest Teoh its credit lower down, they don't have in a filter. So resolutions just given that slight extra bump on the Fujifilm cameras in this in this X trans senses in this level don't have a full designer. So typically you just get a little bit of extra image quality. But then the Pentax K three in this class yeah, goes about that a slightly different way, doesn't let's talk about that. That's really interesting. So in common with a couple of the other models here, the K three doesn't have an anti alias in Filter. But if you are shooting, if you are shooting somebody who's wearing a particular fabric that you see is creating wiring, it can actually vibrate its sensor very, very slightly. Just to give that fraction of a pixel blur gets rid of the wall, right? Yes, we've never seen it done before. We haven't tested it fully, but it's It's a very, very small piece of it has to levels that you can actually, you can have it more intense and less intense, even off. It's really quite incredible. But that's similar, I believe, anyway, similar to what we're talking about with the defense, where the senses sort of almost free floating so it could just be allowed to move very slightly. That's awesome. Yeah, it's also used for the stabilization system as well. Okay to prevent camera shake cobbler from chemical. So I think we've talked about a few of them. What about the Fujifilm X Pro one Within this? Let's talk about the recommendations for this category. Yeah, we haven't got next program with us today, and it's it's a camera that now the model beloved the XY one has been updated. It's starting to show up some of the features that the X Pro one missing, but it's got It's got a beautiful hybrid viewfinder that can be used both as an optical viewfinder on the electronic viewfinder. It's a trick that the only Fujifilm offers, so that's that could be a lovely camera to shoot with. It's got lots of external control, really solid feeling build. So does it. Feels nice. It was 50 films first X, Siri's camera, I think. Wasn't it finished? Interchangeable? Yes, that's right. It really does feel lovely. It's a luxurious product child into you. Also, they keep updating it. Conditions mentioned as well. I mean, it's years old 18 months or so, but they keep on giving from Robert Gates out to keep it current. So there it is, lacking a little bit behind. There are some hardware things that they they can t o. Can you explain that because I think some people might not be aware you can actually got the same hardware, but you can actually change firmware these days. People used to replacing their smartphones right. It's the same thing. Your smartphone doesn't change. It's different thing. Smartphone But every now and again, the manufacturer pushes out an update with chanson extra features. Makes it a bit quick. Get through some bugs, right? So think about it. The operating system, that's exactly what it is and you can do that destroyed cameras as well. So, for instance, through the Fujifilm accede to gain gains a couple of sort of behavioral tweaks over the X one things that the company got feedback from users saying, Actually, wouldn't it be nice if this button works like differently? Not only of they incorporated those into the exit to, they've offered. They've offered those as firmware updates for owners of the existing cameras, completely free of charge. So I mean, both Fujifilm Enrico have a really good history of doing that, really supporting their users, even after replacement cameras have demonized. That's really crucial, I think as well, because even if a product been around for a little while, it's still current, then that's one thing. But doing it for cameras that have been replaced by other cameras. Yeah, that's a very big deal. It's really good because they just I think they really see the value of keeping the customers happy which is great any other, any other creatures or wants to call out for this. I think, really, we've talked about the cameras that were with recommend, you know, the D 70 is north. A lot of features for the money. The Pentax K three is really impressive when we're looking forward to doing more testing on that Olympus E. M. One. I personally wasn't sure whether Micro 4/3 would make would make sense at this level. It's a lot of money, and the cameras started to get bigger compared to the compared to the models further down the range. It's a much bigger camera, and I was thinking, Well, does it have the advantage? You know, once it starts, get bigger. Does it? Does mark 4/3 make sense, given that the image policy is gonna be a fraction lover than a PSC? But the way the camera handles the way it operates, the autofocus system that's been improved, we've been really impressed with that. I think it's probably the standout Marylise camera. I agree, and I think we all agree that it's the closest thing there is to a good DSLR experience in terms of performance and responsiveness. Anything that Olympus is very like ignited touches on video quality right now. But that's, you know, that little changed. Sorry, it was a very critical on the court. The d as well, Actually, I think it's very impressive to the D 7170. It's got a very similar, you know. It's a competitive to the central. It's kind of in the same space. Just got a couple of unique tricks. One thing not unique but different to the Nikon is it has a folder LCD screen, great video, great for life. You. The reason that's really important is it has in a system that's designed to give very fast and accurate F in video and in live you so I kind of already forging ahead. Okay, the system uses every pixel, potentially on the other sensor. In 80% of the center of the frame can be dedicated to other focus or is dedicated out of focus. When you're shooting in life, that's pretty incredible, which is a pretty big. It allows you to do things, but if you if you think in video terms, anyone out there who's particularly versed in video technology. It allows you to pull focus by just touching the screen. Focus. When you go between one thing, another literally. You know, you touch the screen on the subjects, and then you touch it again, and the focus pulls to the new subject very quick. It's very easy. It's not hesitant, and it's extremely accurate in our testing. You can do that by touching the screen because it's a face to section system for readings that a little bit complicated to go into here. It has a good understanding of where the subject is. Contrast. Detect F, which most Marylise cameras used on most Dear Solares when they're in live view mode, has a little bit of trial and error involved. And if if that's happening, if that trial and error is happening when you're shooting video, it could destroy the footage because the lens will overshoot on the fact and then fine tune in. And that's no good. Your footage is gone at that point. This is a phase detect system so knows when you press on a particular point, it knows where to go. More importantly, where to stop, Very impressive. Where to stop that is very President Jetta. That's right. When you say full focus, I'm thinking about having that second person on the big DSL. Ours were actually pulling the focus on the side, so I think for me, stop going crazy.
