Fundamentals of Photography
John Greengo
Please note: video addendum segments have been added to the course page with updated information on the D5200, D5300, and D5500.
I would recommend it to a complete novice. However, I did not get that much from it. While John is a great instructor he is not a Nikon owner or user. I am sure he knows how to the camera, but he is not into Nikon. He pretty much just went thru the manual. While he did mention how to use manual mode, he left some important concepts out of using manual mode. Namely that you need to adjust aperture, shutter speed and/or ISO until the meter reads something - he never really covered that. As I said, if this is your first real camera it would be a great course.
Great basic class. I took the "Starter kit" class with John prior to this one and some of the information is a bit redondant. Still very useful to understand all the different features and functions of the camera.
This great class got me up and running with my brand new D5300. Moving on to the next class. See you there Mr. Greengo.
I purchased my Nikon D5300 a year and a half ago, but have been taking most of my photos in the full Auto mode because I really didn't understand how many of the other features worked. I found this class to be very informative and I learned a great deal about my camera's features. I found the section where John had me practice going through several different scenarios of picture taking requiring me to make different adjustments for each scenario particularly helpful. Thanks for a great class John!
Thorough and informative look at the D5100. Interesting presentation by an excellent teacher.
I own the D5500. The information in this course was very helpful, though I wish that there was more content to the addendum for my particular model, or even a separate course altogether. My knowledge of photography is relatively limited and this instruction really improved my abilities - makes me want to learn more.
Having owned Nikon equipment for over 15 years, John's course has presented the material in layman's terminology rather than from the technical programmer's viewpoint. With the availability of reviewing the content, note taking is not a priority on first viewing. I have the D5300 and the slight enhancements were addressed in the last segment. I will continue to check the available classes as this and the other two I took have given more insight into equipment and programs than any other source.
Excellent! John in a great teacher.
This class was very informative and very structured. Although I did take some other online classes to learn about photography but this was really helpful as it was specific about using D5100 that is the camera I own. Thanks for all the information John.
I bought my first Nikon DLSR after watching a little of one of his classes. This series makes one more adept at the camera's use particularly in manual. This course makes the set-up of the camera for different situations very clear. I have his Fundamentals of Photography course as well. I don't believe there is anyone who communicates as much information in such a clear concise way. I've been shooting film since the 50s and John has made the transition to digital stress free. Thanks John.
I thought John Gringo's Nikon D5100 course was very good, and I wish that I had known about it when I purchased the camera. At the end, when he was going over the settings and he asked the course participants apply the settings he was describing, I found it difficult to keep up and so I will likely review that part again and again.
Harry Greenhalgh, Australia. I have had my D5100 for approx three years and with these courses I feel that I have a new camera. The idea of having the information explained on screen whilst you have the camera in your hand is fantastic. Cannot wait to try out what I hope I have learned. Explained in plain English for a change, WOW. Thank you.
The course is a great addition to the information one needs to actually use the Nikon D5100 or any of the D5000 series. The Nikon manual does not communicate some of the valuable information needed to use the D5100 as an actual camera and not just a high level tourist camera. The information in this course allowed me to see the options I was not aware of I had at my disposal with this camera. It has opened the creative aspects of photography to me as I strive to go from hobbyist to full time pro photographer.
I love this class i am a new photographer coming into this world and i hope to one day own my own business and i really think i am going to be very successful in my life and so far this class is great for new beginners he goes slow he doesn't go into to many details he makes it short and sweet and that's what i love about this class.
