Top Stores and Why They Work

in this lesson, I'm going to be going through two really strong e commerce stores and break down what they're doing in particular that's making them very successful with their e commerce business, through a design perspective. So in front of me we have Claire Claire is an online store that sells paint and paint tools and right off the bat with their simple and sweet messaging, I can get an understanding of paint shopping simplified and this is exactly what I'm looking for as a customer. As I scroll down, they have more information and all of their content is compressed quite nicely, so it's not very overwhelming and they use the white space around it quite nicely accented by some of the products that they sell scrolling down. They do an incredible job of the lifestyle photography associated with their product here. You can see backgrounds with tons of lifestyle imagery, leveraging the paint that claire cells and below they have trust badges from other publications that build that much ...

more confidence for a first time or even returning customer. Now what I really like about this homepage, it's when you scroll down, you can really understand that Claire and the organization that runs it really cares about empathy. And let me explain why just by looking at the title right here we have paint with peace of mind. Now, you can see right off the bat that they have a problem when it comes to having paint inside your house, there's so many options and it can be extremely overwhelming and what they focus on even in the messaging below the subtitle is that the owner has gone through hundreds of different paints and simplified what paint selection could be the most effective for your home. So overall, just by being on this initial homepage for Claire, I can get an understanding of the simple messaging they're looking to portray lifestyle photography that allows me to relate the interior of my house with what it could look like with Claire publications, to build trust and an empathetic viewpoint that solved the problem, as well as identifies the solution to what Claire is here to serve their customers. Great, so let's jump onto example, number two Outdoor Voices. Outdoor Voices is an incredible apparel company for both men and women, and they do an amazing job with their homepage and other templates as well. Similar to Claire, there's very simple messaging behind this amazing lifestyle photo scrolling down. You can see that they have very strong call to actions. So though they may have a very simplified navigation, these call to actions give you an even better understanding of what you're looking at when you're searching through the website. So on top of that they have a lot of social proof by embedding their instagram feed directly on their homepage, which gives you a really strong understanding of the amazing community associated with outdoor voices. Now, if I were to navigate to a specific product like Shot Men and then click on a specific product from there, we can see right off the bat that this product page is an extremely solid example of what the project page should look like. The product, photography offers different suggestions of different angles that I've communicated with, the brief but very in depth overview of the product description works out really, really well associated with the products. You can see that they have these little badges to explain additional attribution of why you should buy this specific product and overall they leverage whitespace really, really nicely to not overwhelm me in terms of all of the different choices that I have associated with looking at this product. So the end things off with outdoor voices, I'm a really big fan of how they communicate their trust within their site by clicking this icon here, which is a quote with a question mark in it. You can see they've combined all the different questions and all of the areas you might want to contact outdoor voices at in a simple bubble. So whether you want to call someone, chat with them or email them, these are effective ways that you can build trust with your customers. Now, you may not have the specific functionality to accommodate this, but being able to, as I mentioned, incorporate a phone number, a simple email, your building immediate trust with your customers and that's what you're looking to do when building an e commerce store. So I've only touched on a few points that makes both of these sites really exceptional. But rest assured there's so many more elements associated with this site that makes it that much better. So I want to challenge you. Take an opportunity to look at some of your favorite e commerce stores and pinpoint what are things that they're doing through a design perspective that are making them that much more successful. Now, if you don't have some inspiration right off the bat, definitely take a chance to visit the resources below and we'll have some links of some incredible sights. They'll make you that much more inspired. Yeah.
