Bonus Video: Project for Available Light

Hi, My name's Andy Katz and this is a project that I think would really help you out. Understanding available light photography Light is such an incredibly important part of a photograph. You could take a photograph. That is a very interesting place, the compositions perfect. But if the light is miserable, it's not gonna be a good photograph. It will never be a great photograph. So lighting is to me is one of the if not the most important part of a photograph. So what I like you to do is to find an area that you really like that you can go back to. That will be pretty much standard, uh, not moving objects like a barn or rocks or something like that. But some place that you really like and would like you to do is to photograph it a little bit before the sun comes up right as the sun is coming up and then a little bit after the sun comes up, then go home, take a nap, wake up at 11. 30 and go back at noon. Take the same photograph of the same object. Everything is identical is possible. D...

on't take many at noon. Go back then, right before the sun sets. Get a nice glass of wine cabernets. My suggestion. Have a glass of wine. Then you go right before the sun is setting. Shoot, Then shoot as the sun is setting and shoot after the sun has set. Then download it, put it on your computer and look at these images. And I think that one exercise will tell you more about lighting than you could imagine. I mean, we'll give you a complete idea of that. The other thing that you can do is, uh, which is a very simple, uh, exercise is find a friend or an enemy. Whatever is easier to find and photograph that person high noon and photograph that person in the morning could do the same exercise with a human being if you want to. If your people photographer this is a great exercise for that, but it will give you an idea of what, uh, the temperature. The light is the shadows. Uh, the beauty of that early light, the color of the light as opposed to big day light. Uh, it's a little bit of a hassle, but I promise you, once you have that on the screen, things start clicking. You go. Oh, I get it. Now

Getting it right, from the start. That's what Andy Katz does in this class. Andy speaks to the audience in a way that makes you feel like your talking with an old friend. It's comfortable, and relaxed and he has a sense of humor that's colorful and engaging as well. His real world experiences are related to you in a way that makes the viewer follow along with the information he furnishes. For me as I viewed his images and listened to the back stories that went with them. Made it all "click" for me. He speaks candidly of his photographs, and travels and of his experiences. This is solid information as it relate to photography in the real world. Don't pass this one up.
