Editing: Building the Story

one little Housekeeping. Sure I have to do here, and this is something about final cut pro 10 that annoys me a little bit and that when you import XML, you have to deal with the parts of the these storylines. If you see these great bars above, above the clip, these air storyline, calm storylines and it just the way of organizing multiple clips on a track. So in order for me to blade all and remove chunks of the story, I kind of have to remove him from the storyline. So it's usually a simple fix. It's just a matter of lift from storyline and said it's a right click menu option and then deleting these annoying little boxes. Okay, and I'm just gonna do that for each of my place chairman. A lift from storyline and they believe box. It's just a quick housekeeping thing. I might even do it for the primary story here. Just leave it like that this way, when I blade all, it's just a lot easier to grab things. I can even know what just for it is over, right that just to bring everything down. So...

it's nice and condemn so Let's say, for example, I want to start off with a piece of the toast. Okay, I want to see. Right now I'm only seen because it's on the top track that the reaction shot. But I need to see that the maid of honor. Watch this. Just select it. Hit V and I could see the track beneath it. It sort of disables that that clip that was above it. And it's a nice, easy way to toggle back and forth and be able to see what you're doing. So basically gonna go through and start? Let's start building. Let's start getting into it. So here in my project list, I have a project or slash timeline called C L Wedding Day. This will be our main film. Okay, this will be arraigned. Film file. I'm not the type of editor that will take a piece of music, put it down and then start editing to the music. Okay, that's not what I want. Start. That's not my first step. Scoring is important, but it's not the first thing I do. I want to start isolating the pieces that I'm going to use in my film and fleshing out the story creating the backbone. And that's where this dark grey bar comes in handy. It's called the Primary storyline, and this gives me all of the roll my dialogue and later on I'll be able to move around and shift it and put it in different places and b roll above it. Audio beneath it. But I want to lay down. Picture this as the vertebrae. Okay, watch this. Let's go back into our Sara toast sink. And by the way, let's rename this. Let's go. Three dot toasts. I can't type today, of course. ST. Okay, just that enter. Now it's moved it up because I've given it a number. It's all based on compact right where I needed to be. I have to do the same thing down here for my project file. Some still do the same thing. Four. But I need that three deny. That was dumb. Let's change that for okay, housekeeping here toasts. And this guy's like I said, I'm editing this in real time. I have not edited anything last night. So what you're seeing me do is exactly what I would be doing if I was editing this. So this you're actually seeing me in the process and you'll see me go. We know. You know, editing is not fast. It's not fast. I mean, the workflow can be fast, but as far as building a story, you gotta put some thought into it. And I haven't really thought that much about what I'm gonna do here. I really wanted to kind kind of see the raw process, how this works. Okay, good. So let's start with the toast. I think I'm actually going to start a war with her with the maid of honor doing the toast in the morning. I might open up on that, but I think what I'm gonna do here is just go ahead and pull out some chunks from this. So let's just listen back to what he says here. Wow. I promised myself I wouldn't cry, but this is gonna be much harder than I thought it would be. Okay, first and foremost, I know I don't reference audio from the camera. Remember that. So I'm just gonna go in here. I'm not gonna delete X. I might want to use it for the clapping later on, so I'm just gonna just lower it I'm just gonna remove that from what I'm hearing right now. Now I have to make a decision. Which two of my sources. Which of my two sources do I like the most? Which one was quality? Let's listen to just the body, Mike. Right. But this is gonna be much harder than I thought it would be. My name is Sarah, and Rebecca and I have been inseparable since birth. When people ask me, All right, it's a little a little bit of echo in there, All right? I'm just gonna simply let's just meet that one. Let's bring the other one back all and let it happen. Sarah and Rebecca and I have been inseparable since birth. When people ask me who my best friend is, I say it's Rebecca, but I don't call her my best friend. I call her my sister. Rebecca has always been there for me in the way of pictures. Sister, What do you guys one or two hold up fingers? Teoh. It's got a warmer quality to it when I sweetened that. Just a little bit more bass in it. But when I sweeten the audio later, I can bring out the hike and take the blood of the base out into the high end Sparkles a little bit more on. We'll get into graphic cueing later on too. So I'm just stick with that one for now. I'm not gonna spend too much time on that. Let's just go ahead and start instead. Chunkin. That is now the technique term for this choking. Wow. I promised myself I wouldn't cry, but this is gonna be much harder than I thought it would be. That's a great opening line, isn't it? To a film. I wrote that. I did not tell her what to write. I did not know what is really gonna be said here. But I was so enamored with shooting yesterday, I wasn't really listening to it. That's the hard part about saving at its Because I have to listen, absorb and shoot. And then go when I sit down to edit an hour later. Go. OK? What? Oh, yes, you said something. Good evening. I hate saying, um all right, so now I'm ready to start pulling chunks out here. So let's be by hitting bees. My razor tool. If I hit it twice, that's final cut seven sorry if I hold shift. If I hold shift, it gives me blade All which means it'll cut everything that the play had is on for those. If you don't know, this is a play. Had to play heads this this bar. Okay, So much harder than I thought it would be Be holding. I could hit end to turn on snapping. Snapping will bring the right to that point as protectors or near it Click. Let's grab the beginning of it. Wow, Therapy Just bring it back Beginning be hold shift, snap click I want to bring all I really don't need to bring in These other audiences were not needing We're not gonna use Right, So I'm just gonna probably wouldn't normally do this. But this for speed say no. I'm gonna want to bring in this shot as well. Right? Highlight all that copy. Let's go into our seal wedding day paste. All right, I'm just gonna start flushing out my story. Let's get all our dialogue down, and then we'll figure out what we're gonna do later. Faras you know, putting it together. So what's really handing and final cut is these arrow keys. Whichever project you're working on first will allow you to jump back and forth between the when you were on last. So makes things a little bit quicker to go back and forth between, So back in here, my name is Sarah and Rebecca and I have been inseparable since birth. When people ask me who my best friend is, I say it's Rebecca, but I don't call her my best friend. I call her my sister. Rebecca has always been there for me in the way it picture sister to be. She's been with me through amazing times and even more so during the sad times. No one I know has a heart like hers. And I didn't think any man would be deserving of her love. Until dirt came along the night of their first date, Rebecca came home with the biggest, most goofy smile on her face. I have never seen her smile like that since then. That smile has never faded. Dirk, I can't take. I can't thank you enough for being the most wonderful man to my best friend Her Every thought is about you. You truly light up her life. I could wish you love laughter and happily ever after. You will use this. My name is Sarah, and Rebecca and I have been inseparable since birth. When people ask me who my best friend is, I say it's Rebecca. Stop there with the same thing. We're blade, hold, shift and describe the whole thing. So I'm not gonna get too much into this because you don't want to be done here. But I know now I know to start cutting this in with her in the morning, right? So let's just go look at what we've got there. So let's go into our seal wedding day event. I'm gonna drop this arrow down and see my keyword collections. And I have a keyword collection for brides. Maid of honor. Everything we did there is all right here. You ready for some bad? All you remember. Do you guys remember what we used to record the audio for this? Because we didn't have the road on camera. This is why we don't ever want to use young camera. Mike. Ready? 321 No one knows her heart like you just let that sentence against No one I know Has a heart really quiet. Probably boosted it up here. Theo Hiss would just be so bad. So I don't know how this is gonna work out. Let's try to clean this up. Let's see what we could do about it. I'm not sure we'll be able to do anything with it, but let's give it a shot. So let's do this. Let's create Let's give this its own sequence just so we can clean up the audio that we could pull chunks from it as we're editing. So I'm simply gonna go in here. I'm sorry. I'm gonna go down into my projects tab here, and I'm gonna create a new project, and I'm gonna call this Were on the wet number five. So called this M o H. Speech. Morning. All right, Boom. Drop this clip down by the word quick way to drop something down is highlighted. E drops it down. All right. You can see on the way. Form down here is really quiet. Working with audio and pocket. Pretends pretty cool. There's a lot of really cool quick fixes to deal with. Bad audio. First thing. Let's just raise the level. What's to see what it sounds like? My boosted up if I just grab the level line here. If you will see that little yellow parts there, it's just showing you where it's going to start getting loud. Peaking. That's actually useful feature. Once you get up in the red. If it if it ends up going up into the red, you know you got a problem. Let's just bring it up to write words, peaking in the yellow and see how it sounds. Now a family that would make even the Brady Bunch jealous. Quiet. What about here? So there I was, just capturing audio. That's me. Roll start. Cut this here. Here's I'm only working with parts that first, and we know it's still not loud enough. So let's double click the clip. Let's go over your inspector window. That's this window over here in the top, right corner and on the audio tab. All right, you see how here under Volume and Pan, we've already moved up our audio all the way to 12 db. That's the ties that will let you go without getting into affecting in gain and things like that. So if I click down here toe audio enhancements click show, it has not really analyzed the all you yet When I imported all this all this footage I told Final Cut Don't analyze my audio. You could have final cut, analyze all your audio and it'll red flag things that might be problematic. So I didn't do that. So I'm just gonna come into here, and I've got options for loudness, background removal, hum removal. Now, what it's telling me is, it's giving me this little red exclamation point saying you've got a problem here. This isn't gonna be loud enough for you to use its smart knows. It knows that's gonna be a problem. So if I check loudness now, I have the ability to to add some game and you can see Look what happened my way for him down in the bottom, under the clip, It got really hot, right? So let's just dial that back. Let's get to a point where it's quality. The night of their first date, Rebecca came home with the biggest, most goofy smile on her face. I had never seen her smile like that. A little louder hiss. No noise in there, right? All right, so let's try this background noise removal. Just click it it's I can't thank you enough for being the most wonderful man for my best friend with every thought is about you. You truly light of her life. I wish. Or I could wish you love laughter happily ever after. But I know that's between the two of you. You doesn't always work that well in this situation. It's the frequency was right. There's a reason there's a little fan icon next to that is that most of your background? Always removal will come from a track systems heating, ventilation, air conditioning. So it did a good job cleaning that up. I'm really happy with that. So I know I think that over here on this clip as well. So rather than going through and trying to do that all over again, I'm just gonna come over this clip Top command, see for copy. Select this clip here. Edit paste attributes. Okay, audio attributes. Paste. Wait, but you get the idea of you need to the copy across the other clips. You'd be able to do that so good. Now we have this to work with the love of your friends and family around you that will support and if I click on my view meter right here. I can bring about a larger via media over here on the side. Actually, let's close our affects tab. You don't need that right now. We have those things covered. So what I do wish for you is this Lake levels good and it sounds it sounds pretty clear. I'm kind of happy with that. So let's let's start chunking this up into our story. So we have something to start working with me. Start building our story here and questions so far about noise removal. By the way, before we get to your questions, there are other programs. Other do the exact same thing. Adobe Audition has a pretty good noise removal tools where you can capture a noise print Alexia buzz, and it'll find those frequencies and pull them out. The problem with audio cleanup is the worst. The audio the worst that your sound is gonna be degraded. The voice is gonna be degraded. Here's a perfect example. Listen to this that's going in this file here. Audio cleanup for you. Listen, this crack, don't worry, you won't need to remember his name. It's not that serious. Don't worry you won't need to remember his name as it came from a speaker from Sound System. Let's let's do a little background removal. That's loud, it up a little bit. Let's pull down some of the background noise. Don't worry. You won't need to remember his name. It's not that serious. That was the memorable way that Jordan introduced Taylor to her mom at a dinner before the week before graduation. To understand why Jordan was certain that it wasn't going to be serious. You have to understand a little tinny, though it sounds like she's under water a little bit. Gets a little garbled. Was another program called Sound so that you can't get any more. I know it sounds, so sounds up to you. Can't buy it more the company out of business. So you have a copy of it. Hold onto it. Don't upgrade your operating system. Once I went to Mountain Lion doesn't work anymore. So yeah, that's that's noise removal in a nutshell. And that's the beautiful thing about final couple of 10 is. You don't have to spend a whole lot of time cleaning up. It does a fairly good job. There's other programs you could really fine tune, but that's good for now. And when I go back later in Q and sweet and that it'll it'll sound better. So when you bring in other audio just like random stuff, you're just equalising everything here. Yeah, well, what? What you mean by other audio? I don't know. Your I don't know. If you want to add something to your film that you've recorded from something else I don't know, fully effective, fully effective. Are other people talking? Yeah, yeah, more about Wesley and social. See, clean it before I edited Notice how he did this to her whole thing before we started cutting it up. If I cut it up and then realized crap, it sounds like I have to go back to each individual clip and change that. And then I got a copy paste effects. It's better to get it done first and then work from your good audio file speech up tremendously. Let's go in back into our project that had the maid of honor in the morning. But I know that's between the let's go take or where he starts. My name is Sarah and Rebecca and I have been inseparable since birth. When people ask me. Okay, let's take it from here. When people ask me, I'm gonna believe that my best friend is I say it's Rebecca, but I don't call her my best friend. I call her my sister is good, but I think that clip right there, I'm just gonna pull that and chunking out the story. I'm gonna go back into my creative live wedding date is dropping in here. Let's go pull another clip. She's been with me through. That's good. She's been with me. I'm kind of skipping over some of the other things. She says. I don't need everything that she says amazing times and even more so during sad times. No one knows her heart like Sorry, you just start that sentence against No one I know has a heart like hers. And I didn't think any man would be deserving of her love until dirt came alone. Now she messed up. Watch this quickly, clean that up and I do this a lot. I take out ums and ahhs and make people sound like they were flawless, even though they were horrible, really bad speeches made to make himself eligible and more so Drink. No. No one knows her heart like that way. Don't need that paste it no one in. So during sad times, no one I know has a heart like hers. We'll do that later. So, by the way, all right, so here's a perfect example of the P tool position tool. Here's the problem. The biggest complaint I hear about a couple of 10 is if you just try something, it moves everything else out of sync. All right, there's issues with that. The waiting, the simple fixes get around. That is, by hitting P and using the position tool. Notice how it's putting in this gray bar in between my clips. If I didn't have that right and I just try to move clips, it's gonna snap it back. It's not gonna let me move it over because I want to put a little bit of space between these two. But I can write P toll when you look not just during sad times. No one I know has a heart good. And I confined to that if I wanted to. S o. P. Tool is your best friend for moving around without having to No one I know has a heart good. Happy with that? For now, we continue flushing out the story, so I will continue to do this. Just try to find the main aspects of our story. It's just I'm gonna throw some music dinosaur editing this with music, cause I want you to start to see it come together, and I normally wouldn't just continue flushing out. But for time purposes, let's go ahead and start putting it together. Okay, let's grab some music and let's talk a little bit about music theory for a second to I have a solving here import my music. I didn't Good. Let's do that. So I'm gonna create a keyword clutching for audio. So for music, rather, something's gonna go file import, and I'm gonna bring in some music that I have here on the C drive and have it under music licenses, and we'll use the song called Breathe In, Breathe Out. It's a good 44 time signature song. We'll talk about that. I can even know what time signature is that how it relates to what we're editing? OK, does anybody use time signature to make their edits more effective. Do you know what I'm talking about by doing that? If not, it's okay. I'll totally explain what we're here for. All right. So important. Folders. Askew Recollections is not really a folder. You could make it unfolded. Listen, making folded. Let's describe this file Import this way has its own little full there. We can find it easily on reading readout and import selected and important folders as keyword collections. Good band. There it is, right. Go back down here and find that. See what? Put it Breathe in, Breathe out. Perfect. Off the border is our music slide. You know for later because we know it's license music. Thank you, Song. Freedom for the song on Let's go ahead, just drop our music down here. When I start editing music, I want to make sure I understand what the time signature is because I'm gonna use the chorus of the song to put my big moments on, put a big emotional moments on. So is anybody the types of the parts of a song or this usually verse chorus bridge, chorus end or intro verse? Bridge cores? And there might be multiple versus I'm sure you've heard 1st 2nd verse First course. Second course, a solvable generally build in emotion and intensity as it goes along, too. Time signature is the beats of the song. Counting off the beats. 1234567812 So different time signatures give different moods in different fields. Most songs are 44 time four beats, four measures. 12345678123 That's 44 times, 34 times What you don't see as common, but you will hear it in certain waltzes through Here. Some Piano Man by Billy Joel, then Dent Dent. So 34 Time is a little bit mawr, and there's a reason why I'm explaining this. This is song in 44 time count. The beats get past a little intro here, a little interlude and we'll count it off. Those wait a second. Just no question. Just let it go, Teoh. Wait six. So when you when this next verse comes in, it's on one a and one. Okay, so we've identified. Let's go back in or editing program. Let's identify the parts of the song because this is important. When we're editing I'm going to usually put my story on the verses and I'm gonna put my big emotional moments on the one of the chorus when the sun gets to the hook to the meat brides. When they watch films like those big moments they don't know why they don't go is because he put the one on the course. They don't know why, but that moment is what brought them to tears. Bride walking down the aisle You know the kiss at the end of the ceremony, then being introduced into the ballroom video. Those are big moments, and that's what I'll get on the course ones. So thistle for four times 23456 said a 1234 limited smoothies. one Thio Thio 678 Now we could discount this and I'm gonna place markers on my song on the final on the timeline where I'm gonna put one by big moments Every leads, this way the audio there course ends markers. Of course. 5678 and mark, You mark new verse. I will go through my music and do this in mark off my versus my courses. and my bridge. What's the bridge? The bridge is basically a breakdown in the psalm. It's gonna change a little bit of tempo. The time signature will remain the same. 12345 But it's not. It's You might have a different sound to it, or it might just be an instrumental. And I usually take out the bridge because it usually creates a different mood, and it takes people away from the mood that I was trying to convey. So my way of editing music is verse, chorus, verse, chorus, chorus end, two big courses next to each other. And as the song goes through to the end, the courses get louder. Mawr instruments get introduced. Maybe some background vocals come in, and they becomes more emotional, more powerful. So with that in mind, and we'll get more into that when we see it at work later on, let's go back to the beginning. Here. Let's start building the story. Let's go in a new thes. Let's listen the beginning of song. Take a little bit more volume guys in here. Thanks. All right, let's just start by moving. Let's take this part of the toast. I'm gonna use my P tool to move it without sink out, sinking other things. And let's place it down right about here in the beginning. Wait a second. Music kind of coming. Wow. I promised myself I wouldn't cry, but this is gonna be much harder than I thought it would be. Okay, not even editing the video yet. Let's flesh out the story. I'm gonna take the part where she is now at Let's move back here. P tool slide, Primary storyline. When people asked me who my best friend is, I say it's Rebecca, but I don't Okay, I want to hit that post. I want to be done with this audio by the time that lira comes in. Well, it's couple options. We can either lose this interlude same thing over and see if we could make it fit, or we can just kind of shortened something down. Wow. I promised myself I wouldn't cry. This is gonna be much harder than I thought it. All right, So let's just try this. Let's just move this all this time looking at this. Let's just start off straight on and let's move this back and see what falls I didn't use people. It's Rebecca, but I don't call her my friend Sister. When people ask me who my best friend is saying, it's Rebecca cry, This is gonna be much harder than I'm gonna have to probably extend a solid it. So let's do this. I'm just gonna He's just so I can work here without any interruption and let's do this. Take a song, Mark. Let's split it up. Take this part live music over. Take one of these parts and I'm simply gonna duplicate it just like this Bob Ross. Happy tree way. Let's actually go back to the beginning of season beginning part instead. And let's just slide this over. We don't make mistakes. We make happy accidents. Perfect. So I hope the song okay, it's not perfect. Doesn't need to be because it's going to be vocal over that. There's gonna be dialogue. So let's do this. Let's bring these back play, slide it over. So where hits the post? Okay, actually, I need to be able to do this. Say it's Rebecca, but I don't call her my best friend. I'm gonna move this over Teoh here. This is where I want it And so I have to do a little thinking here. I promised myself I wouldn't cry, but this is gonna be much harder than I thought it would be when people ask me who my best friend is, So I need to look the whole measure, the whole eight measure. It's almost copy both of these and do the exact same thing. You see what I did there? I have to kind of make it work. But with what I have to work with, it's not always easy, guys. Like I said, editing is not always formulated, But I don't call her my best friend. Perfect. So now it all dio this all this junk here. I don't now. So it's junk. And then time back time this I'm basically gonna put it rule people. Just bring this over. Thank you very much for making an idiot out of me. Why is it doing that teachable moment? There are There are things. Here are these clips are married to these clips. So if I go to move these video clips separately from these audio clips, it won't let me. I have to do something to make these married somewhere else. right. So I'm just gonna simply let's, uh, do this now. I just What I did was I just disconnected them from those top clips, okay? And I have to do the same thing with these. So it's annoying. Sometimes. Just by making a simple things like that, it will work again. Guys gotta work things. It's not always easy. There we go. Sort of. No. Do you want to get into that in the next segment a little bit more thoroughly thing you gotta work around things. It's like it constantly, always tryingto move, work around obstacles. And that's city, probably. There we go. Now I've got it. Okay, anyway.
