Layer Filtering

So the next thing I want to talk about is another productivity enhancement, and depending upon whom you ask, it will either be called layer search or layer filtering. I call it later filtering cause that kind of makes more sense to me, so well, let me tell you what it is, I've got a generic and here that I completely made up there's, no rainbow lane and bolder there's no tofu lane, either. So the purpose of bringing up this images to show you kind of a long laters panel ok, if you zoom in over here, he can see that I've got several layers going on. If I wanted to, for example, change all the funds in all the text, what would I have to do? I have to hunt through my layers panel find all the type players, then I'd have to click to activate them, and then I could use the options bar after switching to the text tool and change the fun. Ok, if you've got a really long layers panel going through in finding all of the layers of one kind or another can be an exercise in frustration. It's not t...

oo bad in this document, but we'll look at a couple of other documents to see what I mean. Well, numancia six is the ability to display on ly layers that meet a certain criteria in your layers panel now those layers don't become hidden in the preview they only become hidden temporarily from your layers panel ok, so let's take a look at that I'll zoom in a little bit so you can see the new row of tools we have over just a little bit here we go so this whole row of tools right here is brand new and see a six you might have noticed that the layers panel was a little bit longer you might not have been able to spot why, but this is why we've got a whole new set of tools for layer filtering show the way it works is right out of the box, the layer filtering its set tio kind of layer okay, what kind of layer is it? Is it a type player? Is it a shape layer? Is a smart object? Is it an image layer isn't an adjustment layer so you can have photo shop filter your layers panel to show you on ly layers of a certain kind so for example, if we wanted only to see the type players, we click the big old tea and watch the lakers panel now I'm on ly seeing the type players photoshopped didn't hide the actual type from my documents what's not the same as toggle ingley or visibility often on it's simply temporarily hiding all the other layers in your layers panel so you can see only the layers that you want to work with which is handy if you're layers panel is a mile long okay, so once I'm at this point and I've got layer filtering going on meaning I've clicked one of these buttons follow this menu is set to kind this little red switch flips itself on that lets you know that some filtering is occurring so for example if your co worker has turned on layer filtering you get this document then you be you may be thinking dude where's all the image layers all I see is type players what the heck's going on here well that rib switches your indication that oh there's filtering okay you can turn off the filtering in a couple of different ways you can turn it off by clicking the switch see how now it's great out it's not red anymore that turns all your layers back on but when you do that this whole row of tools because it becomes inactive which will drive you a little bit mad so instead of flicking the switch just turn off the filter that you applied ok so for example again if we want to find all the layers that air type players ok and again this poppet menu is set to kind from the get go so it will be set to that unless you change it if you want to see all the type players press the tea and then if you want to see all the other layers again press the tea again that way you're filtering bar is still active whereas it's not if you just turn off that switch but do watch for that switch again if you're given a document and a whole bunch of later seem like they're missing okay so just to keep showing you this little button right here so icon is it will filter your your layers panel for image layers so anything that's got pixels on it so if I click that that I can see all I've really only got one image layer in here okay? You can filter it by adjustment layers and phil solid color feel layers are also considered an adjustment layer so now I can see that's where my yellow background is coming from it's coming from a feel layer I use phil layers when I want to create a new solid color background for an image you know kind of like this I use phil layers instead of a regular old image layer filled with color because a feel layer gives you the ability to doubleclick its icon it's later thumbnail and open the color picker so if you're doing any kind of experimentation on background color this is the way to go whereas if you just created an empty image layer and filled it with color experimenting with color becomes a three step process then you have to activate the layer, you have to click it color chip toe open the color picker and you have to click. Ok, then you have to fill that layer with color so there's several commands involved in their, whereas using a solid color film layers really easy. Ok, and again, you can create those by using that half black, half white circles bottom of the layers panel okay, so I'll turn off my adjustment layer filter and I'll turn on the shape player filter see if I've got any shape players and I don't so photo shop says, hey, you hadn't gotten in a little bit better english than that. Ok, so I'll go ahead and turn off the filter for the chez players, and the last one over here is smart objects, so let's click that filter and see if I've got any smart objects in indeed idea any time I'm working with victor illustrations. In fact, your illustrations simply mean that I'm working with a piece of art that's been created by a vector programs such as adobe illustrator carell draw and the old freehand thor arrested soul then I like bringing in illustrations of smart objects because a smart object remembers that it's an illustration and a vector in the cool thing about vectors that they're not made from pixels so you can enlarge them all day long is because you want and you'll never you lose quality. Okay, so that's, why I've got a couple of smart objects in here, so this frame is actually an illustration, and the little fake logo that I made at the bottom is actually an illustration as well. So that's a handy thing, so I'll go ahead and click that smart object, but in the turnoff, later filtering and let's look at some of the other things that we can do with this women you hear a cz you can see other kinds of filters that we can use to pare down a really long layers panel is you can search by lay your name, so if you've got a honking big layers paint on your like, I know there is something in there called the singing bar. Maybe that's what that type players named for the girl, but you can't find it. Then you could simply type the name into the search field that appears after you choose name from that pop it meaning you and you don't have to type in the whole name because it's looking for the characters. Sal go ahead and throw that out and go down to the next one you can also search for layers based on later styles, so let's say for example, you need to find all the layers that you plan to drop shadow too because you want to change the color of the drop shadow the classiest drop shadows are rare the black there the darkest color of whatever's in your image you could change that easily using the layer styled ally box so if you had a slew of layers that had dropped shadows on them, he wanted to change the color how they think you're going to find all those layers can you imagine scrolling scrolling activate activate, activate well, then you could just change the layer filter poppet many to effect and then from the papa many that appears on its write what you want you choose if you see a list of all the different layers styles that you can add so maybe you want you've added a stroke to some layers you want change those we confined them all right here find all the drop shadows so it's a really nice productivity tool other filters that you can use layer mode so if you've changed the blend mode of some layers and we're actually gonna look at that here in just a second I love messing with blend moves when I am building up a collage because you can change the blend motive layers to change how color interacts on one layer interacts blends with knocks out color on another layer and it's a great way for making some layers see through so you can build up texture in an ad or in a collage what have you so if you've changed the blend mode of some layers then you can hunt all those down, choose mode and then choose the blend mode that you think he used and photoshopped will go find all of those layers that have had their blend modes changed to the one that you picked so that you see only those another item that you can search for or filter on rather is attributes layer attributes now that simply means is the layer visible is hidden and they're visible or hidden by utah ogling the visibility eyes often on so you can quickly filter your layers payment for all the hidden layers all the layers that are on layers that air empty maybe you created some empty layers that you didn't really use them and now you're wanting to pare down your layers panel to reduce your file size so maybe you wanted to lead all the empty layers but who knows if they're really empty will click on empty and photo shop will show you the layers that don't have any content on them so you can delete them you can filter layers on if they're linked or not willing to simply means that you have locks two layers together, so diffused the move to on one, you're moving the other one at the same time, which is handy, let's say, for example, I put these ladies in this vector frame, but now if I want to move that home mess, I would move the ladies if I had them linked, I'd moved the ladies and the frame, I wouldn't have to worry about clicking to activate both layers to move them simultaneously, you could link them, and then they would always move simultaneously so you can search for links layers you can search for clips, layers clip players simply means have you applied a clipping mask? Teo any of those layers in a clipping mask is what I've done here to push that photo through that victor frame okay, see how that layer thumbnail is scooted over a little bit to the right, and it's got a downward pointing arrow, that's telling me that I have clipped you can think of it is grouped, sandwiched I've cliff that layer to the shape underneath it, so the photo is appearing through the shape, okay, that's, what clipping means? So if you have done that in the document, you can search on that attributes if I do that in this example it'll show me that one layer that's the only layer that's being clipped or restricted to be shown through the shape of what's underneath it okay, another thing the e concerts for is color coding color coding simply means you have applied a color code to the layer itself. It doesn't have anything to do with color in your document color coding is a nice organizational tool again when you get a a bunch of layers going on in your document perhaps you might color code all the ticks as rid in the layer will show up rid I'll show you how to do that so I've activated these two layers minute control or right click on a pc toward the right part of the layer not on the thumbnail that kind over here in the naming area and you get a poppet menu and I'll zoom out so you can see the whole thing down here at the bottom you can assign colors to your labels so you might want to color all of your text rid okay, now we turn off these filter so you can see see how now I've got a little rib swatch on those layers it's just an easy way to visually identify a layer so you can color code is simply an organizational thing it doesn't do anything in your document whatsoever ok, so if you have applied color coding then you can use that last I'm here in the mini which is color and then you pick the color from the pop it many to its right and then it shows me all the layers that have color coded with red another way that you can apply a color code to a layer is by using a keyboard shortcut to create the new layer instead of just clicking the new layer icon at the bottom of your layers panel you compress shift command in or shift control in in for new layer in your document and within this dialog box you have the option to color coded when you create it but again if you've already created a layer and you decide you want to go back and add color coding he's simply control or right click near the layer name and this poppet menus amazing and these things down here didn't used to be available in this pop up menu sex meaning cia sixty but she can get to color coding down here as well so I'll go ahead and turn off all my filtering again so we're back to seeing all the layers and now let's look at this on another document I really groups it has a really long layers panel ok holy moly this is the ad that I had to do for a conference that I teach at every year on cape cod you wouldn't believe I haven't amazing following on cape cod I love all the ladies on the cake and teaching the conference call get girl camp every year in march unfortunately when the cape is a frozen tundra way have a lot of fun so this was an ad I did and as you can see my layers painless pre long in the tooth over here I mean can you even imagine if I decided I wanted to change the font on all these things? Holy moly so this is where later filtering really comes in handy so to find all the type players this pop up menu again is set to kind click the tea there's all my type players now how would I quickly activate all those layers now that I've filtered my layers painful for them try up to the select menu all layers can immediately all those layers activate and I know they're active because they're now highlighted casey other highlighted so once they're all active I can change the fun so I can come over here and grab my text tool come up here to the options bar and change the fun and if I do that I'll do it with something really crazy playbill ik see how all the fun it's changed at the same time it's a real big time saver especially if you work in production photographers how would this feature be useful to you probably if you want to filter for all of your adjustment layers in the document that would be one of the ways this is more of a feature for for those in graphic design and in a production environment arguably than it is for photographers. But it could be useful as well. Mary from costa rica asked do putting your layers in a group affect the search filtering negative get betting that's an awesome question thank you so much for asking that mary that yes, make it so later groups are another way that you can organize your layers for example, I had I had all my wits about me when I was creating this ad. I might have put all the the body copy or text in a layer group and you can do that by activating the type players or what? Whichever layers you want to, you create the group out of and then you would click the microscopic flyout menu at the very top right of the layers panel this guy right here could not be smaller and you can choose new group from layers and when I do that photo shops going to ask me what I want to name the group and I'm gonna call this text now over here my layers panel you can see that I have a folder and that's really are you doing? You're stuffing layers in the folder so if I click the flippy triangle all my texas now in that folder which arguably would kind of negate the need to use the layer filtering anyway. But you don't always set up layer layer groups. That's what? This is called a group, but if you have, the layer filtering will dip inside of those groups as well. And pull out the items. When you turn off the filtering, everything will still be grouped as you created it, but temporarily they get pulled out on display. And did you say this question from pg? J one? Can you use multiple filters at one time? I believe he can let's give it a shot so I'll turn on the t and then I'll turn on the image layer. So yes. So right now on the filtering for type players and foreign there's layers. Um, mary again from costa rica, she has another great question. Do you search slash layer filter work also on smart objects or filters? Yes, great question. You can filter layers by kind to show you all the smart objects. So the smart object looks a little bit like the layer thumbnail of a smart object. So here's a smart object filter when you've got this problem and you said to kind and if you can see the sunday of the layer thumbnail of an actual smart object looks kind of like that, but if you forget what any of these buttons do, you could just have her your mouse over them and a little yellow told tip will come up if you let your mouth to be still can't tell you how many people I teach, and they're trying to get the tool tip to come up and they're moving around there they're males be still think told people come up to let you know which one of those, um do what now? She also mentioned filters, and it will filter your layers pale for all smart objects, and that includes anything that you have converted for smart filters, which is the exact same thing when you convert an image layer for smart filter flush out makes a smart object out of it, so really, when you click the smart object filter, you're seeing everything that's a smart object, whether it's whether you ran a filter on it or not now it won't filter this is gonna be a weird, since it won't filter by filter. In other words, if you convert an image layer for use with smart filters in which case photoshopped makes a smart object out of it and you run a bunch of filters on it from the filter menu up here there is no way using layer filtering, tio say we'll show me all the layers that I ran a blur on our show me all the layers that I, you know, ran lighting effects on for example, another question, andi, I appreciate this that and a news team a g ray, where we go from depaul spelled out how to pronounce that which I still butchered, but that's what's under jimmy ray from nepal, can you filter text layer by point, text or paragraph picks? No, you may not. The different screen point text in paragraph text is did you know? Didn't you knew that you can draw text boxes and photoshopped? Nobody knows that except for this one gentleman in the paul. So for example, if I wanted to create text here, I could simply click and as I type text can hang off the page where it can't be seen. All right that's point text and photo shot will just dangle that text off the edge of your documents as long as you keep typing. Okay, so I'll press escape to get rid of that you can also click and drag to draw a text box. So for example, if I wanted to put some text in this part of this ad and I knew I needed to be restricted to that size, simply click to start, you know your text, your type player and while you're holding on your mouse but dragged to draw box now it looks like a selection, but it won't be soon as you release your mouse, but you've got a text box. So now, when I tied photo shop, I need to add some leading here, put a shop automatically, wraps text to the next line without you having to push return. Okay, so what this gentleman is asking is can layer filtering, filter out type players that are point text or paragraph text or area text illustrator calls this exact same thing area text. So anyway, no, um so fashion tv from singapore ask, are we able to set different thoughts, sizes in layers, filtering a tool or strictly for only font type you let's see, so for example, if we filter this document by type players, and then we use the select mini toe, activate all those layers rather than shift clicking to activate the manually? Then we switched to the type tool you get all the different formatting options that you normally would now, as long as you have them all activated, if you change the fun all of their phone it's gonna change, but if you change point size than all the point sizes of all those layers are suddenly going to become equal if you've created them all in equal point sizes to begin with, you've got nothing to worry about, but if we revert this document to its original state, you can see that I've got text of all kinds of different sizes, so if you have created text with different point sizes, you do not want tio activate all your type players, then change the point size toe one things that'll change them all, so you can't pick and choose does that makesem point sizes for different layers if you've got a bunch of them activated at the same time, if you change point side's gonna change them all. Additionally, I'm wondering if he's wanting to know, can you search by those types of things like not size or the no? The only things you can search for and that's a good question are what I showed you appear in this this little row, so you can search by kind of layer or these other attributes right here, so we can't search by point size or we can't search by kind of font that kind of thing and a question from helios imaging to coma as it pertains to filtering how are stamped, visible and or flattened layers treated, they're simply image layers it's a great question stand players is away, tio create one layer from many that comprises all of those many layers so in other words, let's say, I wanted to sharpen this ad, holy moly, which later what I sharpen anybody know nobody is because the image is comprised of several different layers and who the heck knows which one you should sharpen, so stamp a simply were first to creating another layer that contains all the information, so you get a one layer, and then you can do something to that layer that tools that only work on one layer, you know, can you, such as filters, sharpening layer styles, things like that? So if I wanted to do that to this document, I would activate all the layers I actually don't even have to activate the first, you can click that little microscopic fly on me at the top of the layers can all right, so you get this shortcut menu on a mac, you can hold down the option key on a pc you hold on the altar key, and when I do that and I choose this command merge visible photoshopped creates a new air with all of the content of the other layers on it and with that layer, which is called a stamped layer, even though you won't see the words stand anywhere in the program but that's just what it's called, you're taken multiple layers, and you're standing them into a brand new one is. Whereas if you flatten to this document, you'd only end up with one layer, and you'd never be able to go back and edit all of that content. But stamping gives you a whole new layer that you can, then, you know, sharpened and so forth. So, no, I just like to explain these things, because everybody doesn't know what the heck you know, stamping is. So when you do that, what you get is a regular old image layer. So the only way to filter for something like that is to choose kind from that pop up menu, and then turn on the the image layer of pixel bass player filter.

Lesa's methodical way of coaching is done with ease and clarity. Together with John Greengo and Sue Bryce, she is one of my favourite mentors in CL. I purchased her CS5 and even before finishing it got the CS6 intensive class. Now Photoshop is no monster to fear but a powerful monster to create impact-fully beautiful photos. Good for both beginners and advance users!
