Layer Tricks Example: Limoncello Label

Another fantastic feature is in cia six is the ability to duplicate multiple layers at the same time we've never had that ability if you can believe it so for example to make something like this and what I have here is uh labels that I designed for limoncello should I decide to make limoncello thes they're actually labels I did for ah restaurant owner friend of ours in boulder and as you can see in my layers panel I've got a slew of layers okay and this is simply an avery template of labels because we're going to print these off on an ink jet printer and I needed toe have ten labels on the same page so I'm gonna undo all of this document and then we're going to build it together okay? So I'll delete all of the layers that I created and as you can see they're all the same so in previous versions I'd have tio duplicate duplicate, duplicate, duplicate, duplicate duplicate and then move them all around but in csce six u congrats a slew of layers activate them at the same time in duplicate ...

all of them so what we're going to do is we're going to create the right side of these labels and then we're going to duplicate that whole side and drag it to the left which is a real fast way to create something like this when you want to print several images on the same page so go ahead and delete all the layers that I made so I had the first this first layer up here actives called left that's just the left side labels and then shift click teo activate everything in between so I shift clips the layer on the bottom of the layer stack and now I can delete them all the mass and you'll see the document that I started out with now you know if you guys know this, but any time you by avery branded labels you can download templates from the avery dot com website, which is a huge time saver if you can imagine setting up the label temple like this yourself is a big pain, so this document I downloaded straight off the internet I didn't create those label guides or anything so now let's take a look at the actual label document that I made in this this technique is actually to follow it will teach you how to duplicate multiple airs at one time, but it also gives you ideas for using smart objects. Ok, so here's the original label document that I designed in photo shop okay, so we've got four layers going on over here in our layers panel now my goal is to get all of those layers into that avery template the fastest way to do that is to place this photoshopped document as a smart object in bill avery template document sounds convoluted, but let's do it together going close this that document cause I really won't need it to back out little bit. All right? So to place that photoshopped document the whole thing on one layer inside this document that I have open, you're gonna choose file place when you click that photo shop is going to ask you, well, where does the item live that you would like to place? So you navigate where it lives on your hard drive and this one is in the cleverly named layer tricks folder, and like I said, that's a great thing if you purchased this class, you actually get all these files, all of them, everything you're saying that I'm using you get the layered file, so this is in the folder number ten layer tricks and here's, my guillermo's limoncello original, so we'll go ahead and cheese place photoshopped brings in the contents of that other document as if it was a single layer. When you choose file place like that photo shop assumes that you're going to need to resize the content so it automatically gives you re sizing handles all the way around it, which is very, very handy. So in this case I created the label four I created the flu shot document the same size as these labels need to because I knew what size labels always going by so I don't need to resize it so we can go ahead and press return or enter on your keyboard the next thing I need to do is I do need to rotate it so I could have done that while free trains form was already active but we'll go ahead activated again she's edit free transform I want tio turn that label nine degrees on its side easy way to do that is to hold down the shift key as you position your cursor just outside of one of the corner handles and when you hold down the shift key it restricts the rotation that you're about to do to ninety degree increments ok so if I hold down the shift key then I get I could make it snap to perfect angles are perfectly straight so this is what I want right here so go ahead and press return now I can press v to grab the regular old move tool from your tools panels arrow with the little cross underneath it and I can position my very first label into place now because this avery template photoshopped document that I downloaded from avery dot com has lines on it I can simply change the layer stacking order so that the artwork is underneath the lines and when we go to print this thing we're going to turn off these guys so the guys were there simply to help us place the artwork okay when you get the first one all set and I'll zoom in a little bit by pressing command plus to make sure that we have that artwork positions properly and a lot of times when I'm doing I wouldn't really call this a detail work but it kind of is it needs to be precisely placed I'll zoom in and I'll use the arrow keys on my keyboard to nudge the artwork in the place because that allows you to move it in much smaller increments and he could if you just grab the move to all started dragon and around okay, so once we get that first label place we can duplicate it okay? So I'll duplicated by pressing command j on a mac or control j on a pc and it duplicated the label right or duplicated the layer so we'll zoom back out a little bit by pressing command or control minus and I'll use my say space bar to move the document around on my screen while I'm at a specific zoom level so now I can take the second label and nudge it down put it into place so we're going to place all the labels on one side there were going to duplicate the whole side at one time now this one since you're moving it quite a ways you'd arguably could just use the move told for that so now I could shift click toe activate the two layers of artwork that I have, and now I can duplicate those two by pressing command j or control j on a pc. I've already got the move tool active, so now I'm gonna hold down the shift key and I'm gonna drag downward and holding the shift key constrains my drag to be perfectly vertical or perfectly horizontal so that I don't accidentally move the labels signifies being back al a bit more so we can see the rest of the sheet. I've got one more than I need to duplicate it swallowed us. Click to activate one layer commander control j to duplicate it dragged that sucker down and let's say that's perfect now, instead of doing that, you know, one by one or even two at a time like I had to get on this right side, we can simply shift, click this bottom layer in our layer stacked, activate all of them in between. Now we press commander control j again those layers air still active. I still have the move till active. All I need to do now is shift, click and drag to the left and again, we're going to hold shift down so I don't mess up and and move the labels vertically amazing now you're ready to print it. So new info shop six the ability to duplicate multiple layers using the keyboard shortcut of command j or control j and you know want to know how I'm memorized that keyboard shortcut took me awhile jump I think of it is jump I'm jumping layer content onto another layer that's how I think of it because otherwise j doesn't make sense to me so that's the first tip in this technique duplicating multiple airs with a keyboard shortcut. Now let us say that we had zoomed in and we're looking at our labels and we're oh so proud of our cleverness and how quickly put this together and how much we're going to be able to charge our client because it only took us five minutes to do this and you notice as I'm noticing now that everything isn't exactly centered on that original artwork. If there's any change you need to make on the original art in the original document, do you have to start over? Absolutely not. All you have to do is open one instance of one of those smart objects that will trigger our original photoshopped document which we place to the start object that will trigger it to be opened we can make our edits in that single artwork document as soon as we save that document it automatically updates every single instance of the r and smart object here in this avery template file that's some of the power smart objects that's really amazing that's one of the things we cover smart objects pretty good in the c s five training course that we didn't do a whole lot of you know, updating instances like this so let me show you one I mean so let's say we look at this label and we're like dad gimmick I've got less space there then I've got there and I want it to be exactly the same or let's say you want to change out anything else change the text change anything all you have to do is control or right click on one of the smart objects doesn't matter which one of them because they're all copies of each other right cause we duplicated oh it it contents is what you want to choose from the shortcut menu that appears when you control or right click near the layer name of a smart object and I'm telling you where to click because you'll get different menus depending upon where you click so if you control or right click on a later thumbnail you don't get any of those smart object object options so don't let that three you want to control our right click somewhere to the right of the layer thumbnail misses the layer thumbnail here so when I do that now I've got all these smart object options so you choose edit contents photoshopped politely lets you know that if you would please be so kind as to simply choose file save when you get through editing this temporary document that's about to open then it will be more than happy to update every instance of that smart object wherever it appears in your document if you change the location of the temporary document that is about to open up when we click ok, then you're changes will not be updated in this document but we'll do that in a second we'll get it so go ahead and say ok and if you don't want to see this dialog box again you can simply turn on the don't show again checkbox you may get this a dialog box if does not think some of your funds have changed they really have it so I don't need to update them okay, so here we are in our original label so I'll change something drastic in this so that you can actually see it okay, what will we do? We will change the name lisa's limoncello fix the current ing a little bit by option or ault clicking your lift tarok did decrease space between letters or you're right? There are key to increase space between letters ok, so let's say that's the only change we need to make I'll also make sure that everything centered while we're here because that's another handy trick for you you can activate multiple layers saw click the first layer in my layer stack and then I'll shift click the last layer that I want to effect which is the lemons and with the move it'll active in the tools panel you get a slew of alignment options in the options bar so if I want everything perfectly centered with each other I can click this a line horizontal centers see how everything shifted just a little bit so I didn't have it all perfectly centered at the start but I can fix it here so now I've changed the name the limoncello we've centered it perfectly now we need to say this document this is where it's important to choose file save not save as because if you to save as and you give this document any other name or you save it in a different location on your hard drive it will no longer be linked all those smart objects in our other documents so you want to choose save our just press command s were control s on a pc when you do photo shop saves the document close it look at our every document every single instance of that smart object has been changed my labels are perfectly aligned so it gives you a lot of editing flexibility. If you've got any element that you need to repeat in the design that you're making or what have you it gives you the ability to update multiple instance s is of that item by using smart objects it's really quite amazing because can you imagine if you notice that you made it air after you've already placed all these dadgum labels start over, but by placing it as a smart object you know works out a lot better now another way he could have gone about this is you could have drag the individual layers over from the original document into this new document, but can you imagine what your layers paying what would look like if you did that? So I go and I had an open that other document again, so in the original label file I had four layers, so that would mean for every place that artwork appears, I would have four layers associated with it and it's just not efficient that way, the more layers you have in your footage shot documents, the larger there follow sizes can be, and the longer it can take some filters to run if you're running filters on them, so definitely placing that whole document as a smart object in this template file is the way to go in and doing so gives you the ability to edit it if you spot a mistake and that's usually when I spot mistakes of mile is when I'm almost finished, so let me do that one one more time because it is a little bit involved what clothes everything and we'll come back over here and we're going to open up are duplicating smart objects ok throw away everything except for those handy avery guides that I got from avery dot com I didn't make that stuff so now we're going to choose file place and we're going to place that whole document as a smart object so navigate tweet lives resize it if you need to in our case we're going to rotate it ninety degrees see there's that those um rich cursors again as we're rotating those air so handy once we get it rotated to resized appropriately go ahead and press return or enter and then press the wiki to grab the move tool okay or you could just click it from your tools panel and then you want a place one of the labels and then you want to drag that artwork underneath those guides so you can actually see if you've got it lined up properly now you want to duplicate that layer by pressing command or control jay you still got the move till activated we're going to shift dragged that label down once you've got to labels in your document you can go ahead and shift, click or two layers rather to activate the other one and then we can duplicate both of those at the same time still got the move till active will scoot down in our document a little bit shift click to drag down and now we need to duplicate one more label shift click to drag down now we were ready to duplicate the whole right side okay so we have the first label artwork in our layers panel active already so we'll shift click tow activate all the layers in between and now we're going to duplicate them in mass which is the new big thing and see a six command j control j they're still active as long as you don't click on another layer and then since you still have the move till activated as well you can simply shift drag to duplicate them on the left side now let's say you've spotted an air somebody wants to change something clients are really great about changing their minds since you have wisely created this document with smart objects you can simply control or right click near the layer name find the smart object part of this menu which is toward the top and you want to choose edit contents photo shops going to say hey be sure not to rename this document or move it yes photoshopped thank you go ahead and click ok now you're back to the original documents make the change you want to make lisa's lemon telling mary go make sure everything centered click the top layer that you want to mess with then shift click the last layer while the move till his active you get all these wonderful alignment controls and options bar so since we want to center everything let's go ahead and click the align horizontal centers buttons and everything's perfect and now the very important part she's file save no renaming no moving file say for commander control s closed this temporary document and all the instances of that smart objects are automatically updated in your other document you know that my friends is working smarter instead of harder in a big, big big big way any questions on that part thiss with e if you modify the original source document outside of the um duplicated smart objects is it still linked or do you have to always initiate that edit from within this document? I'm so glad you asked that question so the question is if I worded open that other original document where I created that are with it update all this seances in this document answer is no you have to trigger the opening of that document from within the layers panel of the smart object that humane and again if you don't get that same mini than your controller right clicking on it and there's some nail you need to be controller right clicking over towards the name and then you'll get those special smart object options that are oh so handy great question I'm laughing because there's somebody in the chat room you can't even say it it is awesome in the chat room way thank you for you are thinking the question is, uh, does importing a psd file as a smart object increase file size and is the external pds defile always required? Yes, and yes, you don't have tio if you're never going to edit the smart object let's say, for example, that these labels labels were set in stone. I don't have to keep the original artwork file hanging around. In other words, the artwork will never disappear from this file okay will always be in there, but I will when I choose and it contents photo shot will give you an heir message and say can't find the original file, okay, so you can think of it as you know, when you use a smart option like that, you're embedding the content, but you're kind of linking it to but it's different in let's, say, like illustrator, where you can place art that is not embedded at all. So if you don't always carry the two files in conjunction with each other than when you open illustrator foul, that art that you placed won't even show up it's, a little confusing and photo shop because the artwork does stay around, so it really is embedded. But it's, also linked photoshopped, remembers the name of the original document where you place that content from, and it remembers where it was on your hard drive. So if you lose that or get rid of it, you just won't be able teo teo edit it and the other part of that question does it increase file size? Absolutely absolutely because you know the the jury is out on whether smart objects or duplicating a slew of layers is really more efficient then the other one I like the cleanliness and the extra functionality that I get from samara objects you know, like being able to replace replace or at the contents of a deal but yeah, it will bump up your foul size, but you know what if your computer is a year or two or even maybe three years old and you've got, you know, quite a bit of hard drive space and kind of been iran, you're probably not going to notice a big deal, but if you're using an ancient computer with very little ram and ram is the memory not hard our space that memory then that file size might be concerned? Okay question from black dog if you forget and rename your linked smart object file therefore breaking the link cannot be re linked. No, no, because it's really you know in in illustrator we do have that ability because you've got a lynx panel and illustrator and if you happen to move a file or whatever you mess up, a link illustrator will tell you who you know warning warning will robinson something bad has happened here and you can really get in other words you can tell photoshopped or illustrator where that file has been moved teo you don't have that ability in photo shop so that shall not move their files if they're involved in the smart object any other questions on that part? Yeah anymore the bad as ask are there any difficult layer command slash controls that allows you to step and repeat rather than do this all manually? Oh I wish there were stepping twenty seven step in repeat for those who don't know is a fabulous command in page layout programs like adobe inn design or cork express and arguably a job like this is much more suited for something like that but this class is about photo shop and it's neat that we can do it because saying that you should create stuff like this and a page layout programs all well and fun but what if you don't have a page layout program in flower shop is all you have to own a shop is all you have so showing you how to do it step in repeat in those page layout programs lets you tell the program how many times you want the art work repeated and what the office it is ok so I could have created this entire template without really having a deeply anything I could have done it into stephan repeat operations so the photo shop does not happen okay? And a question from helios imaging and to come up when making changes to the original psd file will the photo show document need to be refreshed to apply changes as does instant changes in design layouts, by the way, thank you very much that's a good question you have to trigger the update from within this document with the smart objects that you have tio choose edit contents if you do it that way all you do is choose file safe and the instances air automatically updated the second photo shop save your file so there is no need tio refresh there's no ability teo refresh but again you do have tio choose edit content from that smart object I can't I could not I could not open the original artwork file, make changes there and then expected to update I'd have to trigger the opening from within this document and celtic fifty seven sixty four it wants to know can this be done in c s five there are objects absolutely say it's five cs three when we get smart objects sees to for a while like that yeah, absolutely this is all gonna ram the only thing that's specific to see a six and what we just did with this technique is the duplicating of multiple layers at one time with the keyboard short but it was a great reason to show you all this cool, smart, optic stuff and one more from kg photo twenty two. How do you work with photos? Is smart objects when you can't edit them unless you rast arise? Hm. Is that my son one more time? How do you work with photos as smart objects, when you can't edit them, unless you rast arise them? So maybe it's an opinion? Did you rest well? The minute you restaurant is a smart objects no longer a smart object, okay, becomes a regular pixel base layer, and you lose all is this functionality. So if you rest, arise it's, not smart object anymore, so you can't do any of that stuff that we just did. Okay, thank you, which you could still duplicate multiple airs. Okay, so those are some neat layer tricks, huh? Nice for productivity.
