The first thing I want to talk about is the importance of using adjustment layers so there's a menu item and photoshopped that I'd really like for you to forget exists, and that is this mini right here, so let's, try it up to the image menu and the adjustments menu I'd like for you to forget that the first, second and third sections of that menu exists in the program, because if you use any of those commands what's going to happen is you're going to be applying whatever that adjustment is to the currently active layer that's called destructive editing, so if you mess up or the client or you changes their mind, you're going to have to start over and that's a drag so let's not do that instead, let's scoot over one menu to the layer menu and trot down to the new adjustment layer menu. Excuse me that has all of those same options that we saw a moment ago those first three sections of the adjustments mean you are right here, so when you choose an adjustment layer that's like saying, hey pho...

toshopped, this next change or adjustment, I'm going to make to my image please, if you don't mind, do it on its own layer that gives you a pass ity control, if the change is too strong, you could back off of it a little bit also gives you the ability to throw the darn thing away. If you're your client doesn't like the effect so let's, take a look at how to do that. We've got an image here and here's our original, I'll toggle the visibility I off on the top, most layer so there's the original very over exposed, so I'm going to fix it with a levels adjustment layer, so this is going to make the change happen on its own layer. I'll go ahead and delete the layer that I made for you anything purchased photoshopped week you're going to get all of these layered files, so try not to save over them when you're working with my files on your own computer at home, but here for demonstration purposes, I'm gonna go ahead and delete it so there's two ways you can make an adjustment layer, we saw one of them using the layer menu the other way. My preferred method is to click the half black, half white circle, the bottom of the layers panel, and you've got all the same options there, so let's choose levels when you choose that depending upon what version of photo shop you're running. If you're running cia six the properties panel is going to open if you're running see us five or see us for the adjustments panel is going to open and if you're running version earlier than that than a dialog box is going to open but it's got the same settings in here so this class isn't about teaching how to use levels to correct images it's about editing habits to break so I'm just going to grab a shadow slider and pull it to the right so that I increase or that I get some nice start blacks in there and then we'll disclose that panel now another great thing about using adjustment layers like this is that they automatically come with a layer mask saving you the step of having tio ad one say if you had duplicated your image layer instead which adds a lot more file size to your document on your hard drive rather than using adjustment layer so adjustment layers are also a little bit more efficient and so far as file size and they automatically come with a layer mask and you can use that to hide that adjustment from the parts of the image that don't need it so let's go ahead and do that because with that levels adjustment I plugged up the eyes of this pretty kitty here so let's click to activate the mask and I know it's active this because it's got that white bracket around it see how if I click on the layer thumbnail of that adjustment layer than that's the part that has the white bracket around it so let's click back on the mask that's your clue to let you know that that mask is active so to use a layer mask there's a rhyme that helps traders know what to do depending upon or what color to paint with rather depending upon what you want to do and that is black conceals white reveals so if I want to conceal part of that layer and he's paying with black so let's grab the regular old brushed tool by pressing b and you just want the brush told us at the top of that tool said the regular old brush if you've previously used a different brush like we're seeing here you can press and hold the shift key and then tap that tools keyboard shortcut and that will cycle through all the tools and that set but we want the regular old brush tool we also want to make sure that we're painting with black so let's press d to reset our color ships to the default of black and white then let's take a pic get those color chips at the bottom of your tools panel and let's make sure black is on top so let's press the ex key and that will flip flop your color ships those two keyboard shortcuts her real good ones to memorize so now that we've got the breast to active set to paint with black let's, try up to the options bar and let's make sure that we have a soft edged brush active and we can just click the little down reporting triangle next to the brush preset picker and you want to make sure that you've got one of these fluffy guys active right here in the top group doesn't matter which once we're going to change sides with the keyboard shortcut. So now when we come over here to our image I'm going to use the keyboard shortcut to make the brush little bit smaller I'm going to use the bracket keys which you're next to your peaky on your keyboard as in judas priest one of my favorite heavy metal bands so we're going to praise the left bracket key to go down and brush size or the right bracket key will also go up and burst size and he can either tap those guys or you can press and hold the key down with zoom in a little bit by pressing command or control plus on a pc and then we can come in here and quickly we can hide the adjustment from the irises of the kiddies eyes and I'm noticing here that my brush capacity is set to twenty percent let's go ahead and bump it up to one hundred that's the thing about the options bar is that those settings stay changed until you change them back, so if a tool seems like it's misbehaving, then check your options bar make sure that you haven't change something and forgot change it back so quickly here I can hide that adjustment from the areas in the image that don't need it all using an adjustment layer so here's our before here's our after kitty still doesn't like happy, but the colors look better, okay the next day and went on to share with you. Is this one right here? Another editing habit to break also involving adjustment layers is for years when folks need tio darken an image quickly or lightning image, they will duplicate the image layer and change its blend mode. Okay, instead of doing that, you can use an adjustment layer, but this technique is going to use what I like to call an empty adjustment layer, so we're going to make an adjustment layer just to get at blending modes. We're not actually going to make a change in that particular adjustment. So for this image, if we just want to darken the whole darn thing, we could come down here to the adjustment layer many at the bottom of the layers panel and let's choose the first adjustment layer in that list that isn't going to automatically make a change to your image. And that's a brightness and contrast so we'll go ahead and close up that dialogue because we don't care about that particular adjustment now it's trying to the top of the layers panel and let's click that pop up menu right there, which is access to your layer blend modes the first name in this second category here gives you a clue as to what those blend modes we're going to do. You're going to end up with a darker image than you started out with the first blend mode in the second category down here lets you know that if you choose one of these modes, you're going to be creating a lighter image than you started out with. So if we want to darken this image quickly without messing with curves or levels, then we could choose the second one in the dark and category which is multiply it's about the equivalent of taking a sheet of paper and put it in your printer printing an image and then taking that the same sheet of paper, putting it back into your printer and print and again it's kind of like a double code pink ok, so now the whole image got darker, but if that's too dark, I can quickly lower the opacity of that adjustment layer if there's an area that I want to hide that darkening from, I can use the included layer mask again so for example, if I want tio hide the darkening on her hair, all I have to do is make sure that mask is active by clicking it grab the brush tool set to paint with black and then you could come over here to the image and I can hide that darkening from the parts that don't need it so that's very flexible folks have been using that technique for a lot of years, but most often times they duplicate the layer you don't need to do that he's an empty adjustment layer so let's take a look at another use for that same thing here's the before here's are after ok, so using an adjustment layer and empty adjustment layer rather set to one of the lightened blend moves will lighten an image came that's a great way to light and teeth and eyes so let's do that real quick so again I'm going to throw away the layer that I made for you we'll trot down to the bottom of the layers panel click the half black, half white circle and again we're going to choose the first layer and that menu that doesn't automatically make a change to our image and that happens to be brightness and contrast now let's change the blend mode of that new layer to something in the light and category screen happens to work really well so let's go ahead and chief screen now the whole image got lighter, right? So now what we need to do is hide that lightning from the parts of the image that don't need it. When you're working with masks like this, do you take a second to think about how much revealing you're concealing you want to do in this case, let's only reveal the lightning on the irises of her eyes that's going to make her eyes pop off the page. So in that case, it's faster for me to say to feel that layer mask with black instead of painting the whole darn thing with black so he can do that in a couple of different ways. You can try it up to the edit menu. Choose phil and from the eu's poppet menu, you can choose black click ok, you could also set black is your foreground color ship empress uh, option delete on a mac or all back space on a pc, and you can also invert the mask as well. So now that we've gotten everything on that layer completely hidden because black conceals white reveals now, let's, go back in with the brush tool set to paint with white and let's reveal the lightning only on each iris. So we already have the brush tool active in our tools panel taking a peek at the color chips. The bottom of my tools panel I need toe have black on top or wine on top rather so let's. Press x to flip flop those color chips. Now it zoomed into our image by person, commander control plus a couple times and then once presumed in, we can press and hold the space bar, and then you can use your mouse to reposition the image as resumed in. So now we can come in here he's, our keyboard shortcut and we can reveal that lightning on ly on each iris so here's our before here's our after if that's a little bit too strong of an effect for you to go ahead and drop the opacity down to where it looks good. So before, after using empty adjustment layers instead of duplicating your image layer let's, take a look at that same technique on teeth. Okay, we're going to the exact same thing. I see so many people. This is another editing habit to break. When it comes to whitening teeth, folks will try to make a selection of the teeth. Then you've got to remember to feather the selection of the teeth then you need to jump this election upon to its own layer and then lighten the teeth that way that's the long way to get it done if you're charging by the hour, maybe you want to roll like that, but I like going into the outside sometimes, so I want to be fast so let's go ahead and delete that layer will come down here to that same menu do another brightness contrast adjustment layer just to get at its blending modes and if you're gonna lighten teeth, go for something in the light and category so let's use that screen blend mode again whole image turns light let's press extra set are foregoing color chip to black fill that layer mask with black now let's come in here and use a brush set to paint with white so let's flip flop are colored ships again zoom in a little bit and now we can reveal the lightning on those teeth and when I'm working with masks in this kind of situation I like to keep two fingers on those bracket keys for my keyboard shortcut because if your cat jumps up on your desk or a child comes in and grabs your arm, you could miss it s o you can if you have your hand on the keyboard is easier to suppress x to flip flop your color ships and then if you also keep your hands on those bracket keys, you can get real fast with fine tuning your masks like this, and I just want to make sure didn't reveal any of the lightning on her gums zoom back out a little bit, way too bride of a teeth. We've got alien white going on here, so let's drop at opacity to something that looks riel to me that would be down around the forty percent capacity realm so here's our before here's are after so that's just a little ditty on using adjustment layers instead of duplicating your image layers quite so much now let's close all these images, keyboard shortcuts or another great habit to create. I'm closing all these windows by person, commander control w, and then I'm triggering the button that I want to press by clicking the first letter of that button, so I'm pressing d for don't say the next editing habit I would love for you to break is ever, ever, ever letting photoshopped de saturate your image. So we've got some fun yet slightly naughty benny girls going on over here and I'm going to show you the original image. This is another quick tip for you is to quickly toggle off a slew of layers at one time by option are all clicking the layer that you want to remain visible so if I option or all click this background layer photo shops going turn everything else off for me if I want to turn those layers back on you khun option or all click it again so that's just a quick tip for you there so let's say we want to take this image and turn it into a black and white there's a couple of different ways to get it done I'm gonna show you both of those ways one way is to create a grady at math adjustment layer ok so this is what we would get if we did that nice contrast that's my preferred method of creating a black and white in photo shop the other method is to use a black and white adjustment layer can see we don't have quite as much contrast in this images we did with the grady and map adjustment layer so that's what we're going to dio beginners like to go up to the image menu choose mode or adjustments rather and she's d saturate all that's going to do is make photoshopped completely drained the color from your image and you have the flattest most boring most uninspiring black in my image you've ever seen in your life so please don't do that seriously even if you're going to do something like go to grayscale mode let's say you're going to create some dio tones ok we talked about that in the practical creative affects class yesterday you want to handle the black and white conversion? Because if you just go up to the image menu, choose mode got a grey scale she had to get a grayscale mode in order to activate the duo. Tone mode photo shops is gonna de saturate your image is gonna look like crap. You don't do that so let's handle the conversion ourselves so the way you can create that grady it map adjustment layer is press d to set your color chips to the default of black and white. Take a peek at the color chips at the bottom of your tools panel. Make sure black is on top that's very important or you'll end up with a negative. Now let's, come over here to our half black, half white circle and choose grady it man and bam! You've got an awesome black in my image. Now, if we needed to go in to do a tone mode, we could go up to the image menu. Choose mode, choose grayscale and photo shop is going to use our black and white version instead of just e saturating the image. Another way to do that is to create a black and white adjustment later, so let's do that let's choose the half black, half white circle and she's, black and white. Some folks like this method better because you get all these sliders that you can use to find team the contrast yourself so as you drag any these sliders to the left, that color wherever it appears in your image is going to darken. If you drag any of the sliders to the right that color, wherever it appears in your image is going to get brighter. So if you like to tweak your images again handy, if you're charging by the hour, then you can use a black among adjustment layer and have all kinds of control there's also some nice presets in the pop it many toward the top of that panel that you can use, and even if one of the presets doesn't get you exactly the look that you want, you could use that as a starting point. So that's how to create beautiful black and whites so let's, take a look at that on one more image this image was too funny not to use it is just hysterical, at least to me, my work brain so let's do the grady at math adjustment layer again was pressed d to make sure our color ships are set the default of black and white endless press pick so that black is on top now it's come down here to the half black, half white circle and choose grady it man so what's really happening here is a photo shop is taken the shadows in our image and mapping them to one color in our grade. Ian black is taken the highlights of our image and map and into the other color reason argh radiant, which is quite that's how we're getting a black in my image and this is a great map adjustment layer is a great way to apply color tends to your image. I'll just click the little grady in preset picture here in the properties panel and as I click around on some of these other priests, is I get that negative kind of lick, but I can reverse it so that the colors are being matt to the opposite of what they were and you can get interesting color affects one of my favorite buried hidden new features of c s six was the new photographic toning precepts that you can load so let's, take a look at how to grab those real quick we've made our grady and map adjustment layer the properties panel opens automatically let's click the little damn reporting triangle and then let's click that tiny gear icon. The new presets in c s six are down here toward the bottom when they're called photographic toning. When you click that photo shops going to say hey, do you want me to zap all your other presets so you want me to add these to the end of the list you want to click upend so now when we scroll down look at all those beautiful priest says so I reversed the grady it's all turned the reversing off come back up here to our preset menu just click a few these so you can see what we've got there some real nice ones in there so do take advantage of those new photographic toning presets in c s six so that is how you create a black can white image from a color image. The next thing I want to talk with you about is phil layers instead of filling a layer with color an image layer with color rather I like for you to start using phil layers case in point here's an image that we applied a creative edge technique too. Okay, we did that yesterday in the practical creative effects we use the refine edge dialog box toe make this really slick lick an edge but in doing so that we ended up with a transparent background right? So we need to add another layer of color down there well, most people will click to add any layer click therefore around color chip pick a color click ok and then phil that layer with color by either choosing at it phil he's in a keyboard shortcut blah blah blah boring a faster, better way I'll delete the layer just made is to use an adjustment layer so let's do that let's go ahead and click that half black half white circle and this time we're going to solid color from the top of the I mean you now we've got our color picker opens automatically from forest let's say this gray is just fine click ok now we can drag that to the bottom of our layers panel now we've got a new background now let's say that this new color that I chose isn't quite working for the particular image well, if you had an image layer you'd have tio go click the foreground color chip open at the color picker pick another color and then fill that layer with color so many steps but to change the color of a fill layer, all you do is double click it slayer thumbnail on the color picker pops right back open pick another color click ok and you're done. Another great thing about using film layers for color is that if you happen to expand the canvas size of your document and you've just filled a regular old image layer with color, you're gonna have to feel it again because you're gonna have transparent pixels around the edge well a phil layer we'll fill any extra space automatically if you change canvas size so it's much more efficient and again comes with a layer mask if you happen to need to hide that color from a certain spot I use this all the time I use phil layers all the time even in designs so this is one of the images we used in the conquering content aware course because there used to be another bunny right there but we needed room for text so I sent my text and this is what I got the text color is still a little too light against that background there's not enough contrast to make it ledge a ball so what's the fix how about a phil layer in the shape of a little square? Okay, so let's start out with a selection so let's grab our rectangular marquis come over here to the offending area draw selection when you get it just right. Come down here to the adjustment many jews solid color we can pick our color whatever we'd like it to be drag it to the appropriate place in our layers panel and now we can just drop the capacity so that we dark in that area just a bit so that our text remains readable okay, so if you start out with a selection and then you create an adjustment layer photo shop is going to feel in that automatic mask for you so that's a handy dandy thing here's another example same kind of thing when I first set my text, I can't really read I don't really see the f and fun because there's not enough contrast so let's grab our rectangular marquee draw box around the area that you want that color phil to be visible atop come down here to the adjustment menu to solid color now, this time I stole I mast away from the color picker and I snatched up a light green from the images self click ok and then we're just going to drop the opacity of that until it looks good if I need to change the color of that feel layer it's the matter of double clicking, choosing another color and click and ok very efficient, very fast, same kind of thing here thiss images from the graphic design for everyone class we did a few weeks ago and using a color bar like this as we've been seeing is a great way tio build in a safe spot for your text so I made that by using the marquis tool to make a selection and then adding a phil layer now course all this also works on radiance ok, so let's say we've prepared this image right here and we need to build in a new background okay, we did this image back in these selections later shot deep dive a few months back so let's build a new background let's click the little half black half white circle this time let's choose grady in and what we're going to do for this particular background is I'm going to choose a radio radiant so we're going to get kind of color coming out in a spherical manner from the center of the image and then we're going to click argh radiant preset picker and I want to choose one of those fun photographic toning pre cess hey we already loaded on the moment ago so they're still here click ok and that's it if I change the canvas size that radiant phil layer will expand along with the canvas so I've got one more example of that for you and that is with patterns thiss in this best me up every time I look at it first on the how the hell the photographer I had the cat in the bird together it's just so funny in the cat is clearly very displeased about the whole situation so what we've got here in the background? Um isa pattern rights that's a custom pattern that I made well, I could have just fills that layer with the pattern using the edit phil command well, I would lose all flexibility with that, you know I'd have to use free transform if I decided that pattern needs to be bigger, smaller but you could do it with an adjustment layer a pattern adjustment layer or feel layer rather so let's go ahead and create that I'll turn off the layer that I made and all turn on the shape that I drew. Okay, so I drew this square using one of photo shops victor tools, another great tip for you stop using the deck and marquis tools to draw all your shapes. You got victor tolls down here. Okay? They live below the tea for text tool. You got the same kind of thing you got rectangular tools, you've got you elliptical tools, and in cia six we have the ability to fill and stroke those shapes that we make with the vector tools, so use a vector tools when you're making shapes colored shapes rather than the marquees. So I made this shapes let's go and turn it into a pattern. And why do I want to turn this shape into the pattern? I'm trying to build in some depth and visual interest in the background of my text here, and why am I using a diamond? Because diamonds already exist in the photo. Ok, so I'm duplicating, which is the design principle called repetition, so I've got diamond shapes back there, so let's, go ahead and define this pattern. Once you draw anything, you can define it as a pattern just by creating a selection of it and then we can go up to the edit menu and choose to find pattern we're going to give it a name cleverly purple diamond get rid of the selection turn off the later we used to create the pattern now let's use a phil layer to add the pattern to the document so let's click that menu again and this time let's choose pattern use the little preset picker here to tell photo shot which pattern when you add patterns yourself they're always going to end up at the very bottom of the list so we're going toe choose purple diamond and here's your scaling right here hey, so let's say I want those diamonds to be smaller than that all I have to do is use the slider I wanted to be hawking big I can do that too, so hopefully you're beginning to see the flexibility that you can get by using these phil layers now we're just gonna drop the capacity of that layer so that it doesn't fight quite so much with our text. Okay? So any time you're tempted to fill an empty layer with something a color grady in a pattern use phil larry instead much more efficient we'll close these documents I have such fun making these exercise files any time you see any kind of anything that looks like an ad in my files you know it's fake is absolutely fake okay, but we talked about using vector shapes for making patterns already, so I'm gonna hop over that one let's talk about handling multilayer documents, okay? A lot of people, when they have a document that has several layers and you need to use a tool that only works on one layer, will flatten the file. Holy thor, that gives you no editing flexibility whatsoever. So what you want to do is one of two things. Create a smart object out of those layers. Ok, so let's say I wanted to sharpen this file, I would double click to get my background layer to it where it's editable and then I would shift, click or commander control, click on a pc toe, activate all the layers that I want to shove into a smart object so we can do that by activating them. Now it's control or right, click near the layer name, not on the layer some nail, because you're going to get a different menu near the way your name and let's come up to the convert tio smart object option. Now we've got a single layer onto which we could run filters non destructively or add layer styles anything, or use a tool that only works on single layers, okay, so any time you're tempted to flatten, go for smart object. That's one option and if you ever need to get back to those original layers, all you have to do is double click that smart object thumbnail and photo shop will open another document with your layers fully intact now this is a temporary document ok, so once you make your change, I'm going to make a change to the feather on this image so we can do something drastic in there for you all to see it update in the other document so let's make a change now the big important part of this if you're editing content from a smart object, so you've expanded that smart object to see its original content you want to choose file say when she get done making your head it's not save as is this is a temporary document you don't want to move it rename it nothing, okay, you just want to choose save, then you want to close it and when I click that little eggs, you're going to see that change update in our other document where we've got our smart object. Okay, so that's one method of dealing with multi layered files, so I'm pressing undo a couple of times I'm pressing a command option z or control all ziana pc that's the keyboard shortcut for step backward so gives you multiple levels of undue the other option is to create what's called a stamp of these layers pay so depending upon what you're doing one of these method this will work out better for you than the other so we can make photo shop, create a brand new layer that contains everything that's in our layers panel ok, all you have to do is remember the world's most difficult keyboard shark it shift option command e on a mac or shift all control e on a pc when you do that photo shop is going to look at the content of all the layers and your layers panel and it's going to create a brand new layer that has all that content on it. Okay, so that's two ways that you can deal with multi layered documents I would go for a smart object if you can unless you're you need to create a layer that you're going to say do some cloning on because you can't use any of the cloning tools on a smart object. All right, so that has had a deal with multilayer documents stopped flattening those documents the next editing habit I would love for you all the break this is another fake it see now you can tell what I really want to become in life a concert photographer specifically mega this private photographer that would be like that would be really good I would like that a lot anyway dave mustaine anybody out there so here we've got a little fake postcard is another file we created in the graphic design class for postcards, drag marketing and let's say that I've just open this photo, and I've done some editing. What have you saved a darn thing as a native photoshopped document by choosing file save as and choosing photo shot from the format menu, what that's going to do is preserve all of your layers. Okay, so do that. Keep a master document around in native photoshopped format. Now, if I need to send a sample of that image, I need to send a cop to my client or to the magazine or whatever to sign off on this design. Then you're going to see start saving those other file formats like j pig, or pdf from the master doc. Okay, so now, if we want to save a j peg of it, we could choose file. Say that she's jae peg from that menu. Okay, so you always want to keep that master psd file around and that's the file that you want to go back to when you need to create those other file formats. Hey, so always, always save your master. The next editing habit to break is to begin placing files, a smart objects in your photo shopped document, so here's another fake e ad that we made in our graphic design class. Soto add texture to the background. I looked at this guy to shirt and I said, oh, heck, yeah, we're gonna have to find some leopard stock imagery somewhere and put that in this ad. It was just too good not to do so. What I did was I tried it on over. Teo, I think this one came from fa tolia tolia, dot com and I found a vector k vectors have special superpowers built into them. One of them is infinite scale ability. K vectors are made from points and passed with he you can enlarge them to infinity, and you're always going to get nice, crisp edges. Okay, so I didn't know what size I wanted that pattern to be. And I wanted photoshopped to remember that it is a victor and keep all of those superpowers. So you need to bring it in as a smart object. Ok? So let's, go ahead and delete that and I'll bring it in against. You can see it easily done by choosing the file place command, which this is a good one. So, where's, my place command it's not in here well, this particular copy of photo shop has some of it. Menu items hidden I know that because I see show on menu items that don't panic if you don't see a certain menu item just look for that show on many items if this happens to your home so we go and click that now I see my place command now we can navigate to where the files live and these air on the desktop and the cleverly named leases folder and here's our here's our vector so let's go ahead and place it now I need to make it really really big okay, so I'm going to go down in size and then shift option or shift altana pc that's another good tip free stop using all four corners of a free transform bound the box like this you can trigger all for those corners to change at once by adding that option keilar also on a pc so instead of dragging that corner route and then dragging this corner out when I'm going to do is hold down the option key and then I can affect all four corners at the same time. So that's a nice one and we just want to make this pattern big enough to fill the document press return when you're finished now we're going to drop the a pass ity to about ten and we can drag it in the layer stacking order beneath our portrait it's so it actually doesn't show up on top of our faces okay so get used to bringing in files as smart objects if you bring in j pegs a smart object then photoshopped memorizes that j pegs original dimensions so if you need to do any kind of experimenting with size then that's the way to gop because instead of you know every time you resize pixels they lose a little bit equality so if you're experimenting and you go down in size and you go dead g m and I need to go up in size again you're kind of screwing at those pixels but if he had used a smart object photo shop is going back to the original instance of it in its in its mind there's not that it's linking it in any way it just remembers everything about that file in its original form when he brought in in so experimenting the size definitely smart objects another great time to use smart objects is when you're working with raw files okay so this is a this is a fun technique that I'm experimenting with which is where I leave the shutter open on my camera and I swirl the camera around cain a circular manner this was a real pretty flower over in malley so that's what I did here but let's say you know I've done some editing and camera raw maybe I want a lightning a little bit with an exposure here and add some clarity to so you can see the shadows you want to hold down uh you're supposed to hold down the shift key to open this as a smart object I don't know why it says open object already usually doesn't usually says open imaging one hold down the shift key to open it as a smart object but this particular copy cameras doing the opposite which is a lot of fun s o from camera rock if you have to go into photoshopped to do something else to the image plopping it is a smart object because that way we'll go ahead and do that it opens with a smart object if you decide you don't like that it just that you didn't camera raw you can get right back to that camera raw software just like that so what you can do is control clicker right click near the layer name and choose edit contents and it'll pop right back open and raw and you can continue to edit it maybe you didn't like the clarity adjustment that you did and he should have done vibrance to make the colors pop a little bit more and click ok innit updates right back and photoshopped okay so place things a smart objects much easier to edit in that way another handy tip for you is using the trim command have you ever tried to crop close crop and image has gotta drop shadow on it it's so easy to accidentally get into the drop shadow use the trim command instead so let's try that too the image or the edit menu rather, you know it's the image menu image tran and from this menu you can tell or dialogue box rather you comptel photoshopped exactly teller you want to trim out of the image so let's say top left pixel color click ok and now I have close cropped that image like that and I know that my drop shadows perfectly in place now if I wanted teo, I could turn off the background layer and I could save this file out as a png file that would preserve transparency. So maybe I want to put that on top of a slide or a website where the other background can show through and I'm assured that my drop shot it was perfectly in place another great use for that is when I'm creating all of my figures for my books okay, I do them all my shelf I don't trust anybody to miss with my images so I do all the call out all the graphics, all the phase, all of everything but in the book situation I'm limited on page count so these suckers need to be a small and compact as they possibly can, right and yes, you will learn how to do some quality had slopping from photoshopping missing manual, which is great for divorces breakup family reunions, all that kind of stuff. Who needs foot a shopper? Hideous therapy when you got put shop, right, this's? Not an ex of mine. Ok, so let's say, I finished this screen shot I have provided people always ask me that. Was that your ex boyfriend? No. So what I've done is I've feathered the edges of this image also difficult to close crop. You don't want to top off some of that feathering. So again, we're going to reach for the image trim command, and we can tell photoshopped. Hey, do you want me to zap transparent pixels or the color that's at the top or bottom of the image? We can say top left or bottom right in this area, and you can also use this trim away section tio, be more specific about where you want the cropping to occur, but we wanted to trim all the way around and click. Ok. Now, I have got the smallest possible crop for that in there, so if you're in production, you graphic designers out there, I know you're there. Use that image trim command it's very, very handy. The next thing I want to show you is how to use smart filters, smart filters allow you to run filters on your image content, not destructively so the filter will actually stack up in your layers paying what kind of looks like a layer style you can throw it away, you can access its advanced blending options all kinds of good stuff so let's, take a look actually the start with this other money over here, the conspiratorial money's do you get the same? The whole spring thing? It's kind of fun anyway. So what we've got over here in my layers panel is my original layer, and I've also got a smart object here and then underneath that smart object, you see this big old white from nail that's a filter mask so I could actually hide just the filter from the image. You also see the filter that iran over here I like to use the high pass filter for sharpening justcause is easy. All right, so we'll show you how to do that teeth so let's, go ahead and delete that smart object we'll start over, so open your photo or if your image is comprised of several layers, turn them all into a smart object. However many there are, we've just got one here so we can control or right click near the layer named she's, convert a smart object or you can try it up to the filter menu and she's convert for smart fielders it's the same thing so now we've got our smart object now income into the filter men you go down to the other category and choose high pass in my humble opinion this is the easiest way sharpen your images because you've got one setting and you've got this wonderful it's like an edge mask it shows you exactly the areas in your image gonna be sharpening and all you have to remember is to never ever ever have this radius higher than four or you will get sharpening halos that you can see from outer space and that will be bad so I usually shoot for somewhere depending upon what the images if it's like uh a portrait depending upon the pixel dimension of the image you may be sharpening somewhere around a radius of one point five something like that but I want this to be rather obvious on screen so we're gonna pump it up to about three began I'm seeing exactly where I'm going to be sharpening see how that changes as I decrease the radius and I've got fewer areas that are going to be sharpened so it's this type in three click ok looks good that in it yeah what we need to do now is open the filters blending options and change the blend mode to a mode that fifty percent gray will drop right out so to do that let's double click that tiny cryptic little microscopic icon to the right of the filter name in your layers panel so give that a double click and we're going to open the blending options now all we have to do is choose from the mod menu overlay click ok and you're done now if that sharpening was a little bit too much you can drop the opacity of just the sharpening using this opacity slider right here not this capacity slider because that would drop the capacity of the whole layer you don't want that you might want to drop the opacity of just the filter that you ran whether it was blurring sharpening what heavy so we'll click ok and to see the before and after let's toggle the visibility I off and on on the filter itself so here's our before here's our after all seem a little bit so you can appreciate the beautiful for of these attractive bennies pretty amazing, huh? Now if you needed to hide that sharpening from anywhere in the image you've got an automatically or mask right here came right along with the filter and you would be hiding just the sharpening so if we pressed be to activate the brush tool, we've got our four grand colored ships set to black use our keyboard shortcuts to change brush size which apparently don't feel like working right now maybe I've got caps lock on it that's a good prank for you right there all right did you guys see what just happened watch my brush cursor I just turned on caps lock it changes it to a precise cursor this is a fabulous pranked pull on co workers in your creative group cubicle pod what have you when they go out to lunch or go to the restroom remember do their keyboard and press down the caps lock bill reinstall the program to try to fix it is very naughty very naughty ok so let's say we want to hide the sharpening from a certain area then you just paint with black in that included masks and now I'm sharp I'm hiding the sharpening from that part of the image so that's very very handy same thing over here again this is extreme money so where we going to do turn all of our layers into a smart object ok controller right click activate all the layers and controller right click one of them convert to smart object tried up to the filter menu down to the other category choose high past don't go over four let's say three is fine click ok now we're going to double click the filters blending options changed the mod overlay drop the opacity if you need to back off of the effect maybe that was a little too much sharpening we can dial it back to about fifty percent click ok college in useful I think so this next ending habit that I would love for you guys to break is duplicating layers and doing your healing tool work on duplicate layers I want you to start using these healing tools and photo shop has a slew of them on empty layers, instead, much more efficient for your file sizes. Ok, so for example, this poor little girl looks very cranky, and if I turn the visibility off on the layer that I've made for you here, you'll see why she's cranky, I would be cranky, too. So what I've done here is I've done all the healing on its own layer, okay, more efficient for file size and think about it. If you remove somebody sacred mole and they want it back, then you could has come to this layer because you've saved your master document, you could use the erase tool to bring back the sacred mall. I'm covered with moles. I can say that and get away with it, so I'll turn off the visibility either later I created for you. So we need to do some hailing let's create a new layer onto which we're going to do that, you can double click the slayer name to rename it now we're going to come over here chart tools panel choose the spot hailing brush because it's good for fixing things that are round and the key to making this work is to trot up to the options bar in turn on to sample all layers checkbox that's going to make photo shop look through the layer that you're currently on down to the layer underneath where the pixels actually live, so make sure that's on if it's not on and you try to click on this document photoshopped will squawk at you so now in coming here and I'm not going to go through deleting all of these little blemishes but it's a one click situation do be careful though if you get if you want to zap something, I'll move it up and a little bit higher in the screen there if you want to zap something that's very close to something you want to keep like this line of her jaw then I would position that blemish in the lower right hand corner of the brush I wouldn't position it here because with the spot hailing brush footage shot looks at the pixels surrounding that brush cursor and it's going to copy and paste them to the area inside the brush cursor and then it's going to swirl him around so they look rials going do some blending so you would repeat that line of her job which would look funky so just kind of be cognizant of any lines, the edges of faces or what have you whatever that you're trying to fix so it's just a simple click click click situation you know you want your brush to be just a hair bigger than the item that you're fixing so pretty fast he could come through here in zap all of those blemishes and you've done it all on an empty layer let's take a look at the same thing with the brush tool for the healing brush tool rather gorgeous lady who have whomever process this image though, made the teeth a little too white so here's our museum a little bit more there we go here's our before watch the bads and in those eyes here's our after okay we're gonna lighten those bags just a little bit on its own layer so let's create another any layer this time let's use a keyboard shortcuts so we could get that we get a naming opportunity shift man in for new layer shift control in and we're gonna call this bags up e I have to have some fun ok, so now we've got our new layer now let's go grab the regular healing brush now the regular healing brush it does take an extra step you have to tell photoshopped what pixels you want to use for the aforementioned healing okay, so we'll have to do that but first let's try it up to the options bar and make sure that sample menu is set toe all heirs that's the trick to making this work now let's come over here to the offending bag and we're going to tell photoshopped what skin we want to use by pressing and holding down the option key are all on a pc click once to let photo shot no that's the area you wantto steal from release the modifier key come appear to the offending area and just pain across it come over to the other I take another sample point by option or all clicking and depending upon the item you're fixing, you may have to take several sample points. Just be careful you're not introducing repeating patterns, but what I like to do when I do this particular technique is dropped capacity down to around thirty percent because I don't want her to look plastic I don't want to really completely fake we all have a little bit of shadow under our eyes like that all we really wanted tio is give her about two hours more sleep than she really got the night before, so we're going to turn that off to see the before turn it back on to see the after now I've lightened it just a little bit, but I have not made her look fake so that's some of the extra flexibility you get when you do all of these healing steps on separate layers now with the patch tool which is also in the healing brush tool set we didn't used to be able to use it on empty layers but in c s six we got that ability because the patch tool became content aware friendly and in adding that functionality adobe gave us a sample all layers many thank thor so let's zoom way in he is my deity of choice times even weigh into this I because I want to show you what burns out a piercing now I don't have anything against piercings but let's say this dude hadn't yet told the parental units about said piercing and he needed to make it go away real fast well this is an easy way to do it we're going to create a new empty layer so call it piercing the gone and now let's go grab the patched will the patch tool is great to use when you need to say hey photoshopped this area that I've made a selection of I want you to fill it with this area over here so let's go grab the patch tool lives within the healing brush tool set and in c s six from the patch poppet menu you're gonna choose content aware because that is what's going to give you the sample all layers checkbox okay this adaptation menu what she tell the patch tool hey how strict do you want it to be in so far is how it copies over that new information the blending that's occurring I think straight from the factory it's set to medium so now what you need to do is draw a rough selection around the thing you want is at clique within the selection and drag it down to the patch of skin hence the name of the tool to the patch of photo have you that you want to use for the savage and then you just released your mouse but now we can press commander control d to get rid of that and we've lost our piercing they're now however many times you use that tool, you'll get slightly different results so here's our before here's our after so in cia six we now have the ability to patch on a new empty layer okay, but you do have to change that pop it may need in the options bar to content aware you're also not stuck with using the patch tool to make a selection you all saw me freehand draw that that piercing you don't have to do that use any selection to all you want and then switch to the patch tool ok, so you're not forced into that same thing with content aware move tool you're not forced into free hand drawn a selection tool allah the lasso tool make your select shin first, then switched to that tool and then use its superpowers so you can see here in this image that I've got several healing layers going on hey so here's a spot healing layer and here's the healing brush layer we lightened those shadows, so I've done every step of this retouch on separate layers so let's, go ahead, close those files. The next editing habit I would love for you to break is don't use the dodge and burn tools that we're going to selective selectively lighten and darken ok, yes, you could duplicate the image layer and you could use your dodge and burn tools that lived down here in the tools panel directly about the pin tool k dodge tools will lighten burn tools were darken don't do that they're terribly destructive yes, they're re engineered and see us for who cares don't use him what you wanted to instead is create a new layer onto what you're going to do all that but not the image layer ok, so I've got a little folder here for you inside that final folder is the layer that I used to do selective lightning and darkening so here's what the image looks like after I did all that so look at her face area all semen this a little bit more and reposition the document so there's the before there's after all I did was a little selective lightning and darkening, but I did it on its own layer here, which gives me blend low control opacity, control all of that so what I'm gonna do is trick the brush tool into behaving like a dodge and burn tool, so we're going to do that by creating a new layer using a keyboard shortcut shift command in or shift control in from the mod menu you choose soft light, soft light has a neutral color fifty percent gray so let's, go ahead and click the fill with neutral color check box and photo shop is going to create our brand new layer, fill it with fifty percent gray and change its blood moon. Now we can switch to the regular all the brush tool if we paint with black will be burning if we paint with why it will be dodging now. If I was doing this at home for a client, I would do my dodging on one layer in my burning on another layer because I may need different opacity levels for those two layers, so you would just do that again. Okay, so you name one of them burned and one of them dodge, but we're going to do it on the same layer here, so I've got black is my foreground color ship. If there's any area in the image that I just darken. Let's say the bridge of her nose area right here I'm gonna go up and brush size and then I'm going to drop the opacity of the brush tool in the options bar to anywhere around fifteen to twenty percent because you want the ability to brush over the areas multiple times two build the effect so you don't want one brush stroke just to be too strong. So now when I come over here I'm darkening that area ever so slightly here's the before there's the after let she'd be very, very subtle with your retouch is now for wrinkles what's a wrinkle really digitally it's a shadow so let's press x to flip flop our killer ships painting with white and let's come in here and lightened some of those shadows now this is rather tedious work really awesome work to get if you charge by the hour but also a great opportunity to use a graphic tablet lack of graphic tablet I'm into us five that he used at home for this kind of thing, so you'll do a lot of cruising around within your image. I'm gonna take a really long time with this one just so you get the idea another opportunity for darkening, especially senior portrait is to flip back two painting with x and let's dark in that iris room because as we age our eyes fade and that irish room gets really light and that will take about five years off an older person's age if you just dark and that rim of the iris ok, so let's look at that iris here's our before here's our after in that amazing we're not removing wrinkles that person still looks exactly like they did my mom was always after me at least a you take those wrinkles that I know you know how to do it like I will not do that mama because it wouldn't look like you I'll lighten them I will not remove them so let's take a look at that technique again here's another image here is a before there's the after we didn't do plastic surgery we just lifted those shadows in dark and some areas so let's do it again with shift command in or shift control in on a pc to soft light from the mod menu turn on the film with soft financial color fifty percent grade grab your brush tool and oh my brushes one pixel in size that's like I can't see the cursor so if you paint with black you're darken and you paint with white your lightning so we're painting with black right now lower the opacity of that brush tool to around fifteen percent or else your first breastroke is going to be too strong coming here to the image and selectively lighten and darken as you need tio great for shines and shadows steve double chins, you can lift a double chin by reducing by lightning the shadow so here's the before there's the after so that's a faux dodging burn technique for you. Now let's, come down here and talk about text briefly, we close this image, don't save. I'm using many bridge panel to pop open the's files and you can open the mini bridge panel by going up to the view mini or actually the window and need and choosing extensions. Many bridge that way you're not switching back and forth to the big bridge program. I'm staying within photo shop so that's not a little tip for you. So for this one, we want to talk about text formatting, stop applying so many styles to your text, ok, it looks a little garish as you can see here. The text lock on the left is artistic it's clean it's. Nice text on the right is not artistic it's, not clean it's not nice, it's ugly, so step away from the myriad layer styles on text. Just don't do it also regarding tex. For the love of asgard learned to turn your text. Okay, so kern ing is a really big deal. Nothing screams typographic novice quite as loudly as badly or incurring text. So what do I mean by that? Will look at this fake ad I've made here instantly that's me on my bike, her name stuff era for the blue dragon in the book eragon of course, very logical, isn't it? So I've made it this fake bmw ad and look at the spacing between the a and the v they're slamming into each other look at the spacing between the in the ass there's, a grand canyon of space there's practically in another zip look at the spacing between the letter in the apostrophe awful awful, awful you can fix this stuff yourself in the layer files I've even given you the keyboard shortcut right there as the layer name ok, so if I want to turn this text, you want to double click the type player to make it active and then you want to come over here in place your cursor in between the offending letter pairs and you're going to press and hold option on a mac or alter the pc and you're going to tap the right arrow key to increase space see that space in that out or you're going to tap the lift arrow key to decrease space I'm gonna go ahead and make my text box a little bit larger here there we go so now I can come down here and fix all of these current ing problems okay, I can click between the e m s so this is the last thing you want to do before finalizing a file that has texting it to save this for last just like you'd spell check of course you all spell check right photo shops got a spell checker thou shalt spill tick you want to you're turning okay so kern and spellcheck that's the last thing you're going to do you in a text file that includes text so pretty quickly I could create some well current text which is this example right here a case will learn to kern your text and I'm a poet and didn't know it the next will text formatting thing I want to talk to you about is called letting stop using blank returns to try tio create space between lines or space between paragraphs are there used leading which is a term that comes from the old printing presses where we actually use slugs of lead teo space out the uh the type characters a little blocks of lead so what we've got here is three different varieties of leading okay over here on the left hand side there's not as much space in between letters and we've got earth lines rather now we've got more space and we've got even more space these air all typographic techniques ok so here again and layered file I've given you the keyboard shortcut it's option down arrow something click to activate this last layer here so option are all down arrow to increase lending or the up arrow to decrease lending so if you've ever seen any kind of ad that has the type all squished together that's how the designer has done it okay is with the leading control now all of these controls are available in the character and paragraph panels but I think it's faster to do with the keyboard shortcut um one more for you right here there's another will fake ad you know it's fake because you get a pony with the phone right? So for here if I want the verizon wireless see how there's more space above it then there is below it don't add blank returns carried returns you got you're either going to end up with too little or too much space pop open the paragraph panel by choosing window paragraph and these last two fields right here or called space before in space after and you can use those to be incredibly precise on how much space you want before after that so stop it with the blank returns that's just terrible and last but not least our last little thing I want to show you here is if your photo shop okay, so one track mind I had an active text box and it wasn't let me do anything if you're photoshopped document looks like this. This is my husband's newsletter designed tools monthly if your photo shop document has that stag in texan it your photo shot red nick, get out of photo shop doing an in design that is all I have it's break early so I always make things so fun you know what she are if your porch collapses and kills more than seven dogs, I say that because I'm a little bit of a redneck for texas finding away with don't be setting this much text in a photoshopped this is ridiculous photo shop is not meant to be a text editor. All right, get yourself I were in in design a great we actually do you have a you know, a fair amount of questions for you. Lisa one from sunday is with the healing brash. Sometimes it picks up above where I'm planning planting sometimes and sometimes below painting sometimes below what am I doing wrong? You might want to adjust the size of your brush, make it smaller or larger part sounds like making it smaller so it's not picking up as much, but sometimes when I'm using the healing brush and if I do pick up a little bit too much copy pixels from the other area, then I could go back in with a spot hailing brush and fix those really quickly, so I just changed brush size see if that doesn't help a little bit great question in the audience when you were deleting the guy's piercing. Is there much of a difference in the results with the content or a tool? If you just like you did really roughly selected, or if you do, go in and per smart precisely select only around the metal of piercing and use that does that get you better results? Or is it about the same either way? In my experience, it seems to be about the same, but certainly you could try that if you don't get a good result with patch tool than trying to make a little bit more tight selection. But again, you're not forced to use the patch. Still, the freehand draw you might try making a selection with, say, the quick selection toll instead, and then you just want to make sure if you do that, you do want to get a little bit of the background around the thing that you're trying to say fix or else you end up with an outline of it. So you don't want this election to be to tie you want to include a little bit the background, so if you start with a quick selection tool, you could use the select, modify expand menu to pop it out a little bit so that you catch some of that background great question. Two quick questions, actually, first one is what the soul when you're doing it, the faux dajun burn using layers would thie type of brush that you use be affected by using a graphics tablet? Well, you would get pressure control if he used a graphic tablet. Ok, so that would be really different. I just remember that you had said it didn't matter which of the three that you chose when you're picking the ones up there, so does it still not matter? It really doesn't matter the difference between those three brushes that their pressure sensitivity, but since we don't have a graphics tablet plugged in than those three icons work exactly the same way, and the other question was, if you were to bring something in from light room and then converted to a smart object on dh, then used the option for use the option for edit content, would it still edit the content and now? Let me show you how to fix them and I'm so happy that you asked that because I have an example right here that I forgot show you so we've got light room open you can trigger light room teo place the island as a smart object so if you control clicker right click on the thumbnail when you're in light turns library just right down here to the inn menu and then toward the bottom you've got the option open as smart object and photoshopped so that's what you would do and then when you triggered the edit light rail and pop back open not camera raw awesome thank you great question thank you for asking that absolutely thank you some more questions question is from tangent z with smart objects and smart filters can you use different layer masks for different filters? Negative sucks but you only get one mask so in that case you'd duplicate the smart object one another filter that say you needed to mask in a different way thank you. Great question a question from silk alk sharon if you see a healing brush tool on a file with many more layers and just the one with the things you want to hell will that be a problem? Gosh, it depends on the file you know you've got a couple of different options with the healing brush let me show you so in that sample menu you've got all heirs or current and below so what you might want to do in that situation is create a stamp of the layers that are going to be involved in just the healing and then put your empty layer above that and then just choose current and below okay so that that's one way that you could do that you so yeah if you've got something in your layers panel and you don't want other the spot healing brush or the healing brush to pick up then you're gonna have to be a little bit clever with that later stacking ordering you might have to create a stamp of those layers and again to do that it's just press shift option command e on a mac or shift all to control e on a pc if you don't have a layer active and you do that keyboard shortcut then photo shops going to create a stamp layer of all the layers but if he only wanted to create a stamp of a couple of layers and you could just activate those first and then create the stand and do it that way you could do a smart object to because if you do in the healing on another layer that alleviates the problem of you can't use any of the painting your hailing tools on a smart object situation so we'll give you that thanks question from a putter pell's can you get to adobe camera from light room I don't remember if that's a why would you really for one? Okay question. Good question e o so it's to see headed in that's, not an option. I can't imagine the situation where you would need to take a lot of refile into camera because they kind of do the same thing, same thing and that is from o j best can effects done in programs like knicker on one be added as adjustment layers? Or can they be created on adjustment layers? I don't believe you can run any of those plug ins on an adjustment layer, but what happens when you're using those third party plug ins? I'm a huge fan of nick software's stuff, especially silver silver effects pro is when my favorite ways to make black and whites I'm not going to use the grating and math just million photoshopped, but what that does is it we'll work on smart objects or some of the plug ins will actually create a smart object for you when you trigger them or they'll duplicate the layer so they've usually got some kind of nondestructive technique built into them. But you can't run that stuff on adjustment because an adjustment layer really doesn't have anything in it it's kind of like instructions doesn't it's not filled with information so you can't run filters on a desolate layers or their party plug ins
