Mahoohoo - Apparel/Accessories

we are now going on to Kristina and Chris Kale. Welcome. Welcome to Creativelive. What do you think of being in the studio here? It's really great. It's a great space. Yeah, the delight against it's beautiful. It's actually really well. Oh, well, hello. Whoever designed the space great job. So let us know your names. The name of your business. I am Cristiana Kilos. I'm Chris Kilos. Okay, So Kristiana Okay. Sorry about that. And then the name of your business. Ma who? Okay, I'm sorry, but this I feel giggles when I hear the name. Where did this come from? The name came from a late night board game called Balderdash of Time. We were asked to define MCU, and at the time we were just starting our underwear line. So we kind of figured hand in hand like muju and panty is perfect together. So that kind of launched the name of our company. So we started with the panties and we Brancheau into you the women's apparel. Actually, we have all of the goods right here, and we also ventured into the j...

ewelry with the apparel. We kind of the panties a really fun, but we also want our clothing to you very functional and to fit well. So all of the panties air pretty much the same cut. But they are like underwear that will last forever out of beautiful fabrics. And they're very, very Yeah, I noticed that. It's like, you know, we have to think about this is women's match perfect. Looks like I have some potential new underwear, but, you know, comfort and style. We both know that's a challenge. So hard to find these air. Cute. Oh, my goodness. Nothing like handmade panties. Nothing like it. Yeah, so All right. So that's the history behind my who. And then how did that turn into a business, though? Way actually, the very first product that we made where our loop earrings. And they're very, very lightweight. They're made of leather, but there are very kind of bold statement piece. And the original design came out of origami and folding paper, and it was just kind of an experiment. How paper translate into leather. So the paper was like the prototype. Yeah, Yeah, we don't know that. We were really even thinking about starting a business, necessarily, but we were sort of We were inspired by origami, and we're sitting around one day for lean paper. And the next thing you knew, way had some leather in the house and started playing with leather and eventually sort of this product. Okay, so are either of you. Do you have a fine art in your background training way? Actually, we met were married and we met in college in 99. And I was an apparel design student, and my husband was an architecture student. Okay, so we're very design oriented. I'm really in more. The graphic arts. Yeah, So I That probably is very helpful when you're going through the new designs have ideas for you can kind of pass that back and forth and sharing and then turn it into a physical Actual really helps in refining products and getting products that all of the pieces work properly together. Okay, that's kind of it's really nice to have that more like structured, background toe like, kind of throw in like, but in reality, could someone wear this right? How do you How do you figure that out? We'll cheat Cristiana right out of out of school, out of design school. She was making prototypes for streetwear companies. And I found that she was sort of revived, refining their designs more and more, just knowing how the material material is going to react on people knowing how to drape, knowing construction really well on DSO I think it was, I think now for her it's is just our cuts of really nice or if it's a really nice they're made really nice. And I find that she just iterating and Iterating and really knows how to work fabric. And so everything ends up really streamlined really well thought out. Really not just in idea, but really fitting a true body, making sure that when it's when it's draping or laying again, that goes back. Teoh knowing how to make these things in a professional way to where it lays down properly, it forms to the body or, you know, whatever the pieces last finishes. Yes, yes. OK, so you've got all sorts of different materials. You have fabrics, you've got leathers. You use some metal here any any other things. Am I missing? Um, don't you Do you have some stuff? Sounds OK, so we kind of with each material we look at the material we say. Like you know what? What is it like? Best form, like, kind of are the function of, like, a weighty piece of a stone axes, like a class, but that it hangs something, or the leather in the earrings makes them kind of pop out and be more buoyant as opposed to paper, which gets a crisp cold. So yeah, materials really do inform every piece that we make. Okay, We even the cuffs. There, there. They've got this m bossed sort of animal print on them. And, um, rather than sort of fighting that pattern sort of used the pattern. So these crock O cuts. That's like a full sort of caracal in Boston. And we can sort of pick our way through the shapes and the scales and actually using the natural print of a crocodile for the shape of the peace. So each one is definitely is unique. Each one. None of these air at all alike. Okay. And you know, if you look at him there, it's to leathers. So when on the inside, you know have sort of a lambskin interior way found that cuffs are typically sort of unfinished on the inside, but we kind of wanted to make it an art piece on the inside India. So when it touches you, it's sort of soft and response. I bet you all of your clothing is like that, too. You know, the side that actually is on you all day, you know, often artist or even just makers. Maybe Don't always think about that part. They just think about the part that other people see. But it is the total experience, a pleasurable toe wear way. And we don't know. I start with an idea for a product. But we spend a lot of time searching for materials through materials and lots of times we get we get most of our inspiration just looking around for materials to make things OK with that. Let's talk about your team. Okay? So I what, you know have been collaborating with and still continue to collaborate with my husband for many years. And I know that can bring some total joy, but some challenge. So do you want to share? Just you're working experience with your spouse And how do you make it work? Wow, I think it's actually mostly joy. We we've known each other for so long, and we're almost in that pattern where our minds kind of always venture to the same point. OK, so he does really well in refining like some of my thoughts. And I also kind of give them some, like, wild, crazy things to think about. But there's not a whole lot of conflicting things that we put together like they all kind of come out seamlessly and no, you are just like that low and you're in the right partnership then And that really does go for any kind of partnership that you get into It doesn't have to feel like a state of Whoa, right. And that, you know, you said you just kind of read each other's minds. And it seems like you have very complementary personalities and sure and skills so good for you. Okay, So beautiful art we have. Let's actually, uh, take a look at some of these necklaces here. Let us know more about them. I wanna you describe some of these pieces here? Sure. Soon I think a lot of the leather work on DSO. We have these sort of metallic faced leathers for the necklaces and they you know, it's interesting. It's sort of like using this leather in a form in our way that you would normally think of metal. The nice thing about him is they've got this silk thread chain. It's it feels like chain. It's hard like chain, but it's technically just really tightly packed silk to the point. And so they're very light. E didn't realize that, But I do. I love how you put thought into, because way has women. When we're wearing necklaces all day, it doesn't get really heavy, and it does even sometimes to tract away from the experience of wearing it, no matter how beautiful it is. So this is very comfortable, yet it makes a statement way. Have a lot of customers, actually, that will Onley normally wear like a small chain with, like, a little charm on it just because they can't stand that weight around their neck. And they've now gotten into these larger pieces and they can have more fun and have, like something that really likes stands out against their everyday love. What a great need for you to discover through that so I can see that too. Okay, So keep going eso then we also have this This cuff here and this one's history is interesting because it sort of feels hard. It's solid, has these these facets, but it's it's really thin. Leather stretched over. You don't normally think of leather is like faceted. Or is it sort of using mother again in a very sort of metallic way? Really sort of hard way. And it's very comfortable, too. It's also kind of a trick. People always look just like how you get it so tight around the hard object were not really okay. But it's a question. No problems, no problems. Yes. So you did go over the earrings here. I think this is fantastic and beautiful. Andi, I want to thank you both for coming in. So obviously people can find you online.
