Convert Text to Paths

Now the next thing I want to talk about me close up some of these folders here is turning text into an outline or a shape in order to let's say individually rotate letters, so this is a fun little image a museum in so you can see here so you can tell that I've taken each one of these letters and they're rotated at a slightly different angle, but I created all those letters on one text layer how did she rotate them individually if they're on the same layer? Well, that's, what? We're going to look out, we're actually going to take these letters and we're going to turn them into a shape layer and then we can with a special tool that works on paths, okay? But we're going to take each one of these letters and we're going to use free transform on them individually to twist and turn them, and we're going to make them overlap a little bit, and then we're going to use a special command and the options bar that's gonna let us tell photoshopped, hey photo shop wherever two letters overlap, why do...

n't you just go ahead and knock out that area and show me the photo that's underneath those letters through a cool little technique so that's what we're going to do here, and if we take a look in our layers, panel we can see our background image we can see we've got the word texas on one type player, and then we have what looks like a solid color phil layer with a vector mask and we know it's a vector mass because it's gray a set of black, which means you can't paint on it hey, so we've got the shape of our letters over there in that vector mask, and when you use any of the shape tools in shape player mode, remember how we were drawing out all those blue shapes and arrows in the circles and all that how all photo shop was really doing was creating a solid color phil layer, but it was hiding the fil color from the outside of the areas of the shape that you drew, it was only letting the fill colors show through the shape that you draw with shape tools, so that's what? We're going to turn our text into you, so go ahead and zoom out and let's turn off this layer so we don't have it hanging around, and I'm in shed a little bit and copy texas so that when I click somewhere else shift, click somewhere else to add another text layer I can just pace and I've got the same fund, so now I'm gonna double click this and type twain texas toying ok my funds a little bit big someone a double click to activate it and use the keyboard shortcut to go down in font size shift command less than or shift control less than mouse away from the text. Move it over kind of to work I would like it to be and now want to rotate it. So we're going to use the same trick we use a moment ago holding down the command, chiana mac, or control on a pc will give you the re sizing box of free transform, and then you contest, however, your cursor outside the edge to rotate the letters. So now I'm gonna click and drag within that free transformed box and distract them up underneath texas. Okay, and I'm still holding down commander control soon as you release that modifier key than their re sizing box goes away. So now I'm just going to click the layer thumbnail to get rid of the highlighting, and now I'm ready to turn this into a shape player. Ok, so we're gonna have that layer active go up to the layer menu, too, his type and you've got two choices here. You can tell photoshopped to create a path from the letters, in essence, that's going to give you just that finn great outline that we had when we were doing the, uh when we re using our victor shaped tools for masking, we made that soft oval vigna remember how we put the tools and path mode? It doesn't create a layer filled with color and on ly creates a finger a outline? Well, that would work for this technique, but let's say that we want to retain the ability to experiment with the color of this text so we're going to choose convert to shape so either one of these would work this convert to shape option gives you the ability to experiment with text color after you create this effect. In other words, it's going to turn the text into a shape player okay so soon as I click that watch over here in my layers panel photoshopped creates a shape layer actually a solid color phil layer but the phil is only being revealed through the shape of the thing, which is the text now we can go grab a special tool called the path selection tool because when you're dealing with shapes that's really what you got going on, you've got a path that thin gray outline is a path well, if we can get hold of that path, we can summon free, transform and weaken spin those letters around we could reshape the letters if we wanted do anything we want to do with him the path selection tools a tool that we've not used yet and it lives down near the text tool and it looks like an arrow ok there's two tools hiding in there they're the arrow that you see towards the bottom of your tools panel and you're gonna choose paths election tool and all that does is this scuse you tool that you can grab hold of that fingering outline with so now we're going to come over here oh teo our first letter and we're going to click it and as soon as we click it I'll zoom in a little bit you can see that path that goes all the way around it hey, if you decided you wanted the t to be longer but you didn't want this part to change you could click in drag actually have to drag one of the points I got the wrong tool there we go you can reshape those letters anyway you want so let me back out of that. What I did was I originally had the paths election tool active ok, so if you click a letter with the paths election tool, you're going to get the letter in there you can summon free transform to twirl it around, but if you wanted to change the shape of the letter, then you need to grab that direct selection tool now if I click on the letter with that tool five z man you can see the little points on the path are hollow, they're clear once they're hollow clear, then you can grab parts of that letter and twirl it around if you want, but if you want to just rotate, which is really what this technique is about, then you can start out with the paths election tool hey, we're going to do this again on another image, so go ahead and click to activate the letter and see when I click with that tool, see how the points aren't hollow, they're solid, ok, so now we can summon free, transform so press command or control t and it works just like free transformed, as on any object you can spin it around, you can't make it bigger may make it smaller. So what we're going to do is we're going to individually rotate these letters, and when you get finished with the rotation on each letter, then you're going to click the next letter to activate it, bring it free, transform again rotated anyway you want in this time as you start rotating the subsequent letters, go ahead and make him overlap in interesting ways, just click and drag and make him overlap. The other letters just a little bit doesn't matter where you position in press return when you're finished and I go to the next letter press commander control t rotated a little bit, scooted over make it overlap the letter just a little bit. Press return. When you're finished, go grab the inn. Let's, get him over here now. Bring it free. Transform commander control t make the letters overlap a little bit. Press return. Grab the next letter, commander control t make him over. Laugh a little bit and we'll call that good. Now, when you have all the letters place like you want him and he got the rotation set just like you on it, then you want to select all of them. So I've already got one of them activated right here. So I'm just gonna hold down the shift key. Click the rest of the letters. Once you have all of the letters activated, then you're going to press the exclude exclude overlapping shape areas. There it is in the options bar case if we take a pic of the options bar while we have that paths election tool active, we get some settings up here we haven't really seen before. Ok, so if I zoom in so you can see it, this last one appear should be if the shot will give me my tool tip give me my tool tip photoshopped oh, it's, because I've got this little mini open, ok, if we have her over that button up there photo shops told people come up and it will say exclude overlapping shaped areas well, all that really means is it's you telling photo shop a photo shop wherever these shapes that I've got activated are overlapping me overlapping each other exclude those areas in other words, drop whatever phil they've got and make it empty and in doing so, you'll see through to the photo that's underneath, so you just want to give that button a click and a soon as you do, see how the photo you can see through to the photo underneath saul zoom back out so that's a funnel technique to do, especially when you're adding text to a photo that exudes motion in some way so music kind of has a vibrational quality tio so the individual rotation of the letters works well with that kind of funky. Okay, so don't worry about these little dots you can click anywhere else in your document and they'll go away. And as soon as you click off of that shape layer that we made, that thin outline of the path goes away too, so you're not going to see that, and again, it doesn't print now if you wanted to still experiment with color of that word this works exactly like a solid color film lyrics that's really what it is double click it you're going to open the color picker and you can come over here and decide to make that word a different color okay, so let's do that again on another document there we g o so that's what we're going to create this time exact same technique someone turn off the visibility of the later than I made for you and we're going to go grab our text tool come over to our document and type the word groovy my double click it to highlight it so I can go up in font size shift command or control greater than I grew up a little bit more mouse away from the document move the text around on the document when I've got it the way I want it I'm going to go up to the layer menu choose type convert to shape and again convert create work path would work as well but you lose the ability to experiment with text color if you do it that way sir, we're gonna choose convert to shape now this one is a little bit easier to see because of the contrast of the underlying photo you can see the path going around these letters that's the thin gray outline that does not print okay it's just finish up showing you hey there's path here so now what we want to do is go grab our paths election tool and that's going to allow us to activate each letter individually so we can rotate them individually and again if you want to experiment with the path itself in order to change the shape of the letters then you're going to grab the direct selection tool instead hey so for example if I wanted to make the descend er of this are really long long and if you look at some movie posters that's really all they have done to create a logo for the movie transformers was one so if you do a google image search for the transformers and you find the movie poster the logo it's just type it's text in on the tea in the f they've converted it into paths just like we've done here and they've grabbed the bottom of the tea and the eighth and they made it longer and that's all they did to create the logo for that multi billion dollar grossing movie okay, but for this technique we're just rotating so we can stick with the regular path selection tool then click to activate the letter some and free trains for my pressing commander control t however, your cursor outside the bottom ege of the letter when you get it described press return in repeat on the rest of the letters and then move them over so that they have overlapping areas graphic designers love this kind of stuff it's funded you now that we've got a few graphic designers and our internet studio audience don't we okay so now I've gotten all my letters rotated, and they're over laughing to a certain extent, okay, so now I need to activate all of the letters if I want tio make the overlapping areas dropped right out, so I've already got one of them active some of the press and hold the shift key clique within the rest of the letters. Now we're going to go up to the options bar, and you're going to click this last box, which is exclude overlapping shaped areas, give it a click, and when you do that anywhere, the letters were overlapping or touching each other, then that part of the letter phil disappears and you can see through to the photo that's underneath. Now, if we want to experiment with text color, I'm gonna click somewhere else in the document just to get rid of those points. D select the letters, the nikkan this double clip that shape player pop open the color picker if you decide well, I don't know what I was thinking with black type there. I want white type for pink type for what have you and click ok, then you still retain that endit ability edit ability, at least with color, you can't edit the text anymore. But you can change its color, which can be handy it's offend technique I think it's incredibly fun technique questions on that one um I have a question from mark help who would like to know why you would want to see just a little bit of background through the over overlap sister interesting visual effect there's no real reason other than because I wanted to you that is a good reason um rebecca vdc had asked, are there any advantages of converting tore work path instead of a shape? You won't get a shape layer so if you want to cut down on the layers that you work with but you still have tio if you created a path out of it, then he would still have to fill it with something in order to see it so it's just a different way of doing it at least with this way you retain the ability experiment with color all right? Now we're gonna take a look at special effects so we're finishing at the text portion of this broadcast yes, we've got a question in the back question could you if you want to just along a a couple of the letters could you do that first and then converted to shape after that if you wanted to elongate the letters yeah, so could you get have to convert it to shape in order to do that? Okay I work path or a shape. But you would do that before the rotation.
