Shoot: Mother and Newborn

So the little pants that all the babies have been wearing from I am an etsy store called king's cloth and their perfect size to go over a nappy if you, you know, a lot of parents don't want their nappies to come off or if you have a baby that comes into the studio that's been circumcised or anything like that, they're awesome, and they come up high as well, um, over the belly button. So if you've got, like, a a bellybutton that hasn't finished healing after birth or anything like that, they're awesome. So king's cloth on etsy, they're great, and the little hat came with it as well. Perfect, they're beautiful. They're going to something. Yeah, maybe we can post a link on the, um chet for everybody. All right? And so I'm gonna do one more beautiful pose with syria, and when I went out with cira, she was in the lunch room and I saw that she had a whole other clothes and I thought, oh, she's got a long black dress there. So the photographing black and I were a lot of black. I always say to...

my clients, don't bring in five black outfits because I really only photograph black on the brown background and on the black, the flat I've already photographed sirrah on the black deflect so I don't want to repeat it so I'm going to do it on the portrait backdrop in the black dress and so what I did was um I made kelly take hero's clothes off just watch that cord cow my my camera's right on your feet and as you can see here is being draped in the dat green because I want to bring a little bit of color in but not a white blanket or a paint blanket and what I want is that classic vanity fear portrait mother and child just was syria looking extra heart so I'm going to get here I'm going to shoot here straight under this brown background and I'm going to get her to just stand like this so lots of shape until one hit that's it and I'm going to get you to hold hero low and and in your arms sleeping and draped exactly like that now a sin is already l room got very cool in the lunch break and now it's probably too cool for hero to go to sleep although she's being feared and she is eight weeks old so in order to put her asleep we need a warm room and we need a full belly what she has right? So hopefully she'll go to sleep if she doesn't we'll just do it away because I really want to show you e you're wide awake oh, she's. So beautiful. Happy so, you know, the pose you're in now I really love that. And I could do the exact same thing with her. Could you do that? Just gonna come up in here and you're going to put one hand. Yeah, it eye line love holding babies like this. So just bring those feet up, that's it and what I'm going to do just lift this hand out. I've got her head. I'm gonna bring the cross up underneath there we go across the street over a swell because from this position, she can use her feet to push yourself away from you if they're wide awake. But if you cross their feet over its sort of presidents, them from pushing with all that power that's in their thighs they're a lot stronger than they look that's, right? Ok, so serious doing what you classically do when you look down on the child and that's tuck your chin in. Okay, so the first thing I'm going to do is tune his side onto the camera this way because I want a picture of her and all I want is for sierra to push her chin towards hero like that and down, so it feels weird for sara and I want to see her face. So I'm just going to spend in tacky here, this is normally where I'd get my can of hair spray and go, of course I can't do that, because here we might start crying s so what I'm gonna do is that I'm just gonna tack it, but not behind your ear, so I'm just going to spend here here like that, and you're just going to give me a beautiful shape. Chin so what we're going to do on the next segment is we're just going to download the two photos of syria and make her look really hard on further shots. I'm going to show you what I wanted to change finish up, so I've got her face, I've got her face, I've got her feet, and I love that, okay, it's going to pull this down because I think it's a bit distracting to her face, so bring your fingers now there we go. Just lift your hand out of it. So here is just absolutely loving you and moment looking at you. Just watch the ear. Well, I'm just going to see if it improves anything. All right? So it's gonna take away your camera? I'm sorry, but kelly, if you want to stand there, I just want you to be up there. Okay say see what that does for syrah that's so much, so much better for her in a long as I can get here here sorted they're right. Well here it is. Okay, soon as I get here here laid out I'm going to go for it. Yes pushing a ten. So what I do is I make them push theatre now and then I sit there here if I sit here here back here and then she puts her chin down, I'll walk away and he'll just flopped straight down onto her face. I can't don't turn your head away from me, sirrah that's a girl so just long turned down there all right? So I'm going to crop this square and what I'm going to do is focus on saying if I can get hero on the side down with your chin tip your head towards me that way slightly no that's got the app you go just talk to her siri and see if I can get here look atyou a soon as she comes in I'm gonna take it and I just want her looking at him mom kelly her arm is it in the front? Is it just gonna be there because she's older, like they're gonna move constantly so I'm not worried I wasn't worried about it, I was just checking it does look better though if they're tucked in just talk to her sarah don't tip you here on the side that's it now just push your ten forward to may and out to her rather and as soon as she looks at you I'm gonna take this sharp push that chin ford sierra and down don't tip your head away from me that's a go just straighten you hit up to me a little let's all right I can only see her in profile that's it assumes she looks at you I'm gonna take it she's staring at that lightly ago long ten honey no talking don't tip your head to the side launch into hero that's it okay wait a minute she looked away soon as she comes back long chin forward look down pushed down sarah don't tip away from me don't yeah they had to go that always smile ok soon as she comes up she's hypnotized by the light at the she goes okay push ten forty year okay tune here towards may and nice low in her arms all that heat is kicking in ok don't look at the shot because I'm going to show you afterwards so you just focus on kelly so what I'm gonna do with this shot here is everything about I'm coming forward my chin is I'm gonna hit this little bit here and I'm gonna hit the back of her arm and tweaked that waistline and I'm going to show you how I do that because nobody stands side on it looks good at the camera like that and so I'm going to do it I'm going show you how I make that into a shot that she's gonna want to buy so low in her arms ok, any questions while we're winding the baby any questions in our studio audience ladies I'm just looking at the shot the baby's really bright so do you prefer to shoot for the baby skin or the for the parents guy shoot for either but it just um is it goes normal exposure and then a second later it bounces up right on the screen I don't know why but it'll be fine once I and then if you had someone like the gentleman early earlier what's typical for me to shoot with like the red skin would there then would it then be better to shoot him over and lose a little bit of brightness and the baby or is there like doesn't matter because you're going to let him ask it anyway so let me get in even exposure on both and you don't have any hot highlights in your history ram yeah so I'm I'm gonna put um hero in her arms but so her face is towards the light not away from the light yeah so what we want is that fabric to drink down her body down sarah's body we wanted not to be wrapped up is a little bundle but that she's wrapped up and that beautiful green fabric is breaking up a bit of that black dress so I wanted lower than hubris line and the reason I want him just below that first line is because I want her to fit in under there is opposed to sitting up really high that's exactly right so all I have to do now no no no no a question for you we somebody had asked this earlier about the mom bouncing the baby and I could see that she was doing that um even as you are trying to pose her does that how do you handle that? I want a pretty fast um shovel spade okay, you know, I'm not gonna slow show was being not slow enough for it to be significant. I'm not worried I will go if I feel like it's starting to get under one hundred are gonna have to either I need to up my ice o or I need teo just say hold in hold and I'll just tell their whole proceeding and keep bouncing and hold and keep mounting and hold but you notice with here I'm always going to say pushing your ten for pushing action for like I'm going to keep resetting her pose because when you got a baby in your arms you're gonna reset your shoulder and your chin really fast and if she was in a chute on her own she would be holding the pose for me so I'm just going to keep making her do it so while they're doing that she set up the baby I need to can we sort that for that because I love it when you do that that's so cool I'm just going to come up and talk to syria into her here because I find as I'm sitting it up the last thing I do is just ease you shop here here and she feels really good and then I remind her when I'm up here just to push your chin towards me and down and then cirie gets this beautiful chin shape okay and she can keep going so when we're ready when heroes ready I'm going to take the shot all right so syrian knows syria she's a right siri knows to push the chin forward too serious here and so now I'm going to go all right let's go get this I could take sierra way from the baby and spray who he is and I think we'll just look it he's pushing you turn towards me feels weird doesn't it looks fabulous I'm just gonna turn her legs just a little bit to get settled in and out of its era slow down nice nice and because when to be able to bend their foot up in here, you need to be able to bend their leg and hip hop, so I'm going to just bring her hip a little bit forward. I know hank, can I have straightening that leg again? So if you've been to the big toe that leg bend so just remember, we've seen already out interruptions today have come from not feeding the baby enough, um coming straight into a shoot after feeding when they need to probably be winded in a little bit more um, if you have the space and time in your studio, you need to consider all of those factors because there's zero point trying to photograph a child that's got wind and that won't sit on and there's very little point bringing one into a cold studio and expecting it would sleep and then there's very little point, you know, I'm trying to photograph a baby that wants to be feared, especially when it's getting near its mother's boobs and also when you tip it down into feeding position that thinks it's going to be feared so what's the point you would stop straight away and go and do one of those things and come back that's a good kill out there hero so I have another question, if you like grace studios, who is abby, um said when sue shoots profile shots, does she sometimes get her clients to push their head not only forward but toward the camera as well to get definitive definition on the side of the jaw? Yeah, I kind of pushed forward in a little bit not really profile very really would you ever be like that to a camera? You kind of about forty five degrees is the ultimate, but the thing is, as I wanted two heroes side profile a swell looking at each other, it either works or it doesn't profiles of funny I find more people hate their profile than any other like more people got on my nose from side on and it just amazes me how many people say that? I don't mind it so much if she's not sleeping, I just don't really want her to be upset, so if she see told sara, push your chin forward anita, reflect a cow man so appreciate in towards may good girl don't move okay, wait a minute, get my my loose baby hannah that's how it always is with a damn what you may be here so people can see what you're doing slow down just doing I've got a big day ahead tip dying that's slowly tune your body towards me, straighten it out that sustained normally that's now slide out with your hip now you just you're hitting it that way we're not know backwards just slide out that's ago now long chin long towards may just go back to stray straight men then I go back to straight ahead now come to me look at this baby okay well you have to do a serious push a gentle what's me half an inch and down that's it in a tiny little smoke on your lips bring that reflect around to who kelly that's it okay tip you here this way half on incheon itis that's too far okay turn around to me a little but not this way stop keep coming keep coming stop during tip away from may stay on stay on that stuff it's okay just move slow I can't be a guy she's looking right at me okay so what I'm doing here is I'm going lower instead of higher and you might be going why is she going lower species with curves I'm gonna show you why when I off load it okay tenure chin stop bring your chin down stabia and then I'm going to shoot it this way so I can take a square shot he uh steady and you just hi uh hi appear she's on me I just need to get it around she's just getting really hypnotized by the light so I'm just gonna lift her head gently upwards and then move her turn ahead that way sometimes when they're trying to turn the head the chin gets caught your shoulder drop your shoulders down syrah that's for your generous bounce so recently after my brother had his baby we were at the supermarket together and we're both talking on my brother was going at this well, he was talking to mae and I were waiting and I think he rocking the baby they meant it it's something parents do isn't it even when they're gonna push here and even when they don't that I notice parents rock I feel like I got what I wanted from the shot so if I don't get here I'm okay with that it's just a baby being baby through the only other thing I want you to do is to bring your chin down and look at her that's it back this way a little weed but more and that's it stay there just eyes down now could go here looking at you that's a beautiful shot of serious face and I really if I could get here looking at that here then I'll feel really happy with what I've got here makes me can you reach it and grab behind it just lied on in so there's a lot of questions about the flats um as usual come over here a little bit more they're around sixty dollars to buy it just foam core and you it's awesome at so many places to spring your chin towards me now and then down to here uh okay all I've done a slide that black thief fled in I'm not changing anything about my exposure and may have to go under a little weed but more I've got this beautiful shape on serious face such sirrah bring your turn around this way a little more and down to him now that's it now as soon as I can get that pacifier out I'm taking a shot so hang on let me get ready no yes bring your chin back this place here out here and now down to here and because she's looking right at me now I want you to look up at me to come up to normal bring your chin forward good stabia that's it good girl might never sent ten ford and down you just wait for it to come on kate in forward and down a bit more one second guys she's nearly asleep just give her a little tit on the head calendar see if you can just knock her out because if she goes to sleep I'll get one more here bring your body around to me had to go a little bit more right you're right where I want you to be now here we go tend towards me sarah and down that come stay there way got it like a sleepy she looks there all right, sorry I've tried that on the brown I've tried that on the black and I'm gonna show you what I'm gonna do with that and postproduction just to make that beautiful it's a serious gun a beautiful expression in the face here is asleep that's good I'm gonna push that back when you'll have another baby and they're not warm okay with the new bonus ready the kids okay, so before we go to the little newborn I said to kelly it would be really good if kelly could get that shot off a toddler holding the baby because it's a very ominous shop that everybody wants and I would like to try it so we've got an older baby so um he's around the one year old he was one of their babies from yesterday but now he's gotta siblings so this will be fun. Yeah, so kill I don't know whether you want to swap out your leans in camera I'm quickly but I'm gonna load off while you're doing that I'm gonna load off they shot so I can reattach them for you and then we can get that new born in and see if we can't get the last off the whole posing manual with mom and dad so if we can get that we're finished all sixty three scenarios in some degree in some way so um I put most people asleep when I talk

I love kelly, LOVE LOVE LOVE her. She is a wonderful photographer, so calm and patient. That is the style that I have when photographing. I liked Sue's portion, however, I did skip over most of it, because I found that she kept talking about the same things. Sue has a great personality bubbly and funny, she just over talked the some topics.
