Introducing Lightroom 5 beta

Lyon five was beta was released on monday, and we're excited to see that happen because we've got lots of things that we can show you in light room five, so I'm excited to give you my favorites and why they're important so on, and I also I'm excited to show you new images as opposed to the salt flats I know that everybody's getting bored of the salt flats, so here we go, these are new images in a train yard, and I'm going to just kind of go through some of the coolest little features inside of light room five so first off here in light room five, I'm going to go into the develop module, and we'll just we'll just kind of work on some images here, so let's, just and I haven't selected any of these images, I've only just imported them, so we're going tio adjust a whole set of images rather than a selection, but I'm just going to brighten this up a little bit, get a little bit better exposure on that and bring the blacks down just a bit and play with temperature, okay? So now I've got my i...

mage fairly much the way I want it, but I think I'm going toe also do kind of a film look on that because we're in a train yard after also can I have, like a little age look to it. So maybe we'll go down in here and do a kodachrome kind of feel to the image. So let's, let's go that way. And, uh, that'll work all right. So that's going to be our image for the time being noticed the way that it's kind of cock eyed, right? So if I click on an image like this and I notice that it's a little bit off kilter, I could turn on the crop and go out to the outside of the crop and start spinning it around like this. Um, or instead of doing that, I could go down to the new lens correction and click on level and now she's level. Now I want you to see how amazing that is that it it's actually able to find the horizon because it watch this it's not looking here, it actually found the horizon, which is here. This train actually tilts up a little bit now because it found the horizon. I don't know how did that. But that's pretty doing cool, you know? And when I first when I first played around that I thought that's cool because I was using like, I took a landscape shot and I pushed it and I thought, that's cool. That works really well but then I started testing it and I started like trying to trick it and when I found this photo I thought, well this would be a great one to try and test it and see if it could work and somehow it knows and it's strained it up and I think it must have her involved a cz well somehow but it really it's it nailed it so that's it awesome tool but the beauty of this tool is that you can put this into on auto situation so you could import all your files with a preset because when you go into the presets and this is where I want to show you during our light room five discussion I want to show you what's new and how it's useful to you and this is where I think all the reviewers so far getting it wrong and that is they look at something and they say, oh that's a nice little tool and then that's the end of the discussion but when you realize what can be done with it to make your life better than what they've done is pretty impressive. So in this case if I click on the presets I go into the presets and you'll notice inside of here now I've got what's called upright mode and because I can put up right mode inside of my pre set now I have the ability two auto this upright mode that's what's called called upright mode and if you have upright mode on then all of your images can be straightened and I spent a lot of time on my I like kind of ah cock I look to my vertical images but my horizontal zay generally especially if they're landscape oriented they look kind of like a landscape and there's a person in it kind of like that thing to be straight and so I spent a lot of time just kind of barely tweaking the horizontal lines right done we don't need that anymore the upright will take care of it so because we can throw that in a preset now you can literally just select a bunch of and and here's where I would use it as I would I would go into the grid and I would go and find say, all of my so you go teo metadata and you go to your library filters here and above every column you have a drop down that allow you choose what you're going to use, so you do aspect ratio and find all of your landscapes. Now I have all the landscapes available to me see that every landscape and so now I can literally just highlight all my landscapes and hit upright mode and they're all fixed okay now in some cases you don't want to fix your some you know a cock eyed look because like for instance here I don't want to fix that that's the right frame so you khun but but if you sort for all of your landscape style photographs you can quickly look through there and find the blocks that need to be straightened and straighten them all at once just highlight the set and straighten and we're done that's amazing it really is amazing okay so that's that's the first really cool item inside of light room five and I'm checking these office I go cause I made a little list of my favorite things so we're going to check them off okay so now we're going to go to let me see if I can find a really quick let's check none here and close that and we're going to look for a really great opportunity for some spot removals so let me just kind of scan through here and see if I can find something that's needs a little spot removal well here we go um so that's cute right go into the develop module and we're going to brighton that up a little bit working on this image and when we when we get to this image we search around here and we're probably going to find something that's going to be a nice or to us whether it's a piece of trash or what you know whatever happens to be and we're going to go into the spot removal tool oh look she's got a blemish on her right there so we're going to want to get she's some kind of a little bit a bug bite or something there so we're going to click on our spot removal tool and we're going to go to healing or you can do cloning or healing and I'm going to come down and remove that spot and then I can move it around and we didn't talk much about the cloning tool and so what you just saw there is fairly normal toe light room for a swell and what it's doing is you're clicking the spot that needs to be fixed and then you're choosing a piece of skin that would go over the top of it and generally I like to choose something on the same kind of slope of radiant that's happening so because her cheek that the grady it follows this top of the cheek I'm going to choose that to be the grady in right there is the best place for that to happen um you want the opacity of being one hundred percent because that will totally remove that on day of course the size here, right? So that's just that's fairly a normal opportunity but then I go up here and do another one here and move that one around and then I go over here and do another one move that one around and then I'm going to come down here I mean really going here and generally speaking I don't do this much spot removal on inside of light room but I'm just doing it because I want to show you this cool new feature that's really quite awesome even though it's very small feature it's very cool okay so now I have a bunch of spot removal opportunities here so you can see all these spot removals on her face right now before how many have you done a lot of spot removal have you ever done smart removal and you do like teeth again then you've got all of these things right so if you wanted to get rid of them you would have to click delete click delete click delete quickly quickly click delete click delete or you can hit reset reset all of them but if you just wanted to get rid of a couple of them instead of hitting reset and doing it all over again or having to click one and then hit the lead and let it explode because it does that when you do that you click on and you exploded and it explodes instead of doing that you can hold down I think it's the it's the option can you see that will scissors and you can just highlight the ones you want to delete and they go away that's pretty awesome I mean I know that that's not amazing new feature but it saves a lot of time when I congratulate siri's of pins and get rid of him with the cut tool that's pretty cool so I really like that of that opportunity as well ok now here's where it really comes into to play and for this I really do have tio I'm sorry we have to go back to the salt flats for a second and I'm going to go to an image let's just go to say something like this and how many of you have fussed over a dust spot and you don't know where the dust spot is on your lens but you know there are a couple there but you zoom in and you you move around and you spinner at you you take so you zoom in like this and you're going like this looking for dust is there any dust around here? How much time does this take you looking for death? Because you know there's dust but you've got to find it right? So let's go back then to the developed module and go to our our spot removal tool right below in the tool areas what's called visualize spots if I click on it it turns into a line drawing and aiken I can intensify and now I'm going to see where those spots exist state there's spots right here here, here and these aren't spots on my chip their spots in the ice are not nice and keep want to call it ice but it's the salt they're like little hiccups in the salt but if I was right here you can see a little dust so as you visualize that you can see the dust occurring so it's a pretty clean chip because they just had can and can't clean it so it's not a lot of dust on it the but you can see if I if these were dust spots instead of spots on eyes the ice assault then I could go in and I could work on those so then I would just any and I don't even have to go to the real version I just click here and get rid of these, you know, get rid of these dust spots there, there, there there say that so that's really fast in comparison to scouting, right? So that's the way to quickly hunt for dust spots just like that and then we're done soon as we turn out the visualize er you can see that I've gotten rid of all of these little spots in the in the in the salt came so that's another really cool that visualize er's awesome so that's going to save a ton of time okay, so now we're going to go back um back to my little train depot shoot let's go let's go to this shot are actually you know what let's go to the one where she's peeking out of the train that was super cute that's at the bottom all right so if we are at this shoot here and we work on the image so we brighten it up and given a little contrast so before if I wanted to focus in on her what I would be doing this I would be taking my grady in't tool and I would be choosing a a burn and I would be coming in like this and then I'd be coming in like this and then I'll be going like that and like that and then I'd be going like this because it if you were trying to you know focus in on her like that you you have to create kind of ah ah a burned or a vignette id situation but the vinje is over to the lab if you're spending a lot of time making this then yet that's specific to this area because if you were to and let's just reset this if you were to try and do it with him and yet if you just went in and did any regular you know post crop or regular linds correction vignette you would end up with it dark on this side here and dark on this side here but the middle is here and so is following the middle even on a post crop vignette you have to follow the edges of the frame and so there you would have to make this a square image to make that the middle so neither of the vignette ing options work and by the way any time you double click the name of a certain tool it resets it double click any name it resets it so instead of doing that now we have what is called our radial filter click on the radio film radial filter and you just simply draw a little circle around whatever it is you want tio dio burn around and notice that it's burning in so it's darker here and it gets lighter as it goes out but you can invert it and now it's lighter here and gets darker as it goes out and I can change this so that it's long and tall and I can rotate it and then I could drag it here see I'm just getting her now I can make it skinnier I can rotate it so it includes her hand there so now look at that and now I can come up here and after the fact aiken see that so I can choose what I'm going to do with it and now there's only one thing that needs to be done is just grab the the grady int and just come across here like that to fill in the rest of that there and so now we've got that image set and I actually think that that would look good as black and white image with some c p a tone to it and I can also add just a little bit of grain because who loves grain I do and then a nice contrast so that's a really cool you know, old photo I like that a lot actually, I think I'm gonna have more grain than that eight hundred grain their necks okay love grain grain is beautiful sit with me grain is beautiful. Ok, so that's a really cool option now the next option which is a small option but I like it and that's the full screen so if I'm looking at this image and I think wonder what that really looks like if I had the f k now I see it it's really a full screen before it's you know, you could get the image big but you would end up with pieces of light room around it even even if you collapse all of the edges you would get that kind of light room border around it but now it's just showing you the image yeah, just going back a bit if he had like several kids could you highlight all of thumb with the absolutely all right yeah so you can you can make multiple I, uh radio filters, so yeah, absolutely so in fact let's try that let's take a another one of these so we're going to create a new one and we're going to do on this window so we'll go like that and then we'll tilt it and then we'll invert it say that's so now you've got two of them they're competing a little bit but you just take this one on dh you have tio oh here's what you do if you want to do that you would invert this one our let's invert and so that one's brightening that one pull them so we would invert it that way and then we had come in and brightness there because it has to combat this one this one's making everything darker and this one has to brighten it back up but yeah so you the first one would dark and things up, and then you take the next couple and brighten the kids back up to normal and the beauty of this and see here's here's the difference between photo shop and light room the difference is is that when you darken something and then brighten it back up it's not causing noise is a result of that because it's just using the raw data so it's not like it's darkening it and then compounding the problems of darkening it by bringing it back up and using that information to light it's the raw data that it's looking at so in the end it just sends out the raw data if instead of this pixel being two fifty three what if it was two fifty four and it just moves that so it's it's not going to cause problems that one so you would just brighten this up so that you have the window you know as bright as you wanted it there say that so and then what what would it look like? We can always by the way on these pins whenever you have these pins they represent whatever burn or dodge you've done, you can always come down here to the bottom and tell it tio auto show so that when you are on it showing where the pens are but when you're off of the photo it doesn't show him and that way you can see what you're doing so let's look at the way this looks there's without the burns and here's with see how that windows stays the same brightness nothing really changes on it tuesday's bright so that's how you do that? Okay s o that is okay so back to full screen I love that that's beautiful so that's a great way to because a lot of times you have to stop editing and look at a photo and see what you've done and this is so remember I was doing lights out lights out is done now it's the ft so you just hit the f k and you get the whole picture, take a look at it, get comfortable with what you need to do and then dive back in and do it so the fda is fantastic, okay? So I'm trying to decide what ordered to do this in we already showed you in the last segment right at the end that we can do video in our slide shows so that's huge that is an amazing change in what we've done so now it's it makes sense to have a little bit of video in there, so that, like, for instance, at the end of that video at the end of that slide show that's the perfect way to end that slide show. So when I finished that job, which I haven't finished, I'm going to finish it with that video at the end of the sideshow because that's super super funny all right and it's that's very easy to do that video was shot on a little tripod while I was shooting. I was right alongside them shooting the pictures and I just took a my g uh no, I have a g fifteen so have a g fifteen canon camera that has full hd video and I just have it on a tripod and it's just watching the same scene and I'm taking pictures and it's just videoing that's pretty easy you can take a hero camera and do the same thing, but just just have some video on certain things that you pre visualize is funny little items that you could throw in, and those could be the trailers or the ending port ocean of ah of a slide show, but it's not that difficult to do because you don't have to have all this editing software to do it. Okay, so we've already talked about that, um I just want youto look att and those of you who are the ft in light room four toggles between different screen modes, but now because the f the f key and light room five goes to full screen, I'm going to constantly hit at thinking I'm going talk going through the modes, but I'm not so the new way to do that and I forget the have to look at it. Um well done, where is it? Ah, I don't remember now what it is things like shift something else anyway, so now you have to figure out what the new the new version of full screen is in it and I forget now what it was but anyway, so I'm going to keep hitting half thinking I'm going to full screen, but in the developed module, those of you who are used to light room for you you're probably used to this kind of a thing you'll see an image right? You have an image and then you'll go to brighten it up and it kind of lags behind you have you guys seen that? So you grab something and you go like this and it and it's a little bit behind you and its process so one of the major advancements that you're going to see in light room five and this is just in the beta which is not completely, you know, all solidified it's faster it just if it's more responsive so it's going to be able to just you can literally just be working on it and it's it's it's a pse fast is your slider so you're not seeing that lag time anymore so speed is a huge advancement plus as you go from image to image, you've noticed a lot of times on your light room for that you're you go to the next image and you can't access the dials and they wait and then they come on watch the dials now as you go through there just there they're available very quickly as opposed there's a little lag time if it's thinking about like a radio filter, but in general they're just they're there, so they're much faster but the but more importantly the follow time is is much better so I just as I have been working on on the light from five beta it's, everything operates at a faster speed so that's that's huge quick question about the ft sam cox asked from level in colorado with fda active and light room five can you use the cherokees to walk through all images that are in your selection or is it only a develop module thing? So if you're in like the grid module and you're looking at an image and you hit the f key, it goes to that full screen and I think he's asking that he's asking can I can I scroll through there? Yes answers so yeah, you can just simply kind of scroll through him this way and so if so, if I really like that's cute if I really like that image and I start it's starring on notice in the bottom left hand corner it's adding it's showing me the stars or it's showing me the flag see that so if you are and I'm going to tell you not to do this but if you're one of those people that goes through like this and sit flags and stars one at a time, you can do it in full screen mode and and it will be much more pleasant for you but there's nothing that's worth missing out on your the ability to select inside of survey mode survey mode is a far more a superior way to select images but once you're done with your images and you've selected him and you go into full screen mode that's a great way to just kind of review your images and look at him you know, compare him together and see how they flow as a story that's a great way to do it any other questions out there I think we'll keep going and stay so the other speed increase that I've noticed is that is the time that it takes to get from one module to the other because before in light room for when you clicked on the develop module and there was a little lag time but watch if I got a library module it's it's their go to develop module it's just they're so it's it's much faster so I think a lot of what they've done with light five and been spending time on his just speed increases and just trying to get that thing pared down less clunky because would like for them from light room three delight room for they they really added a lot of stuff to it and so it just got kind of clunky and so with light room fortified, I think they've really spent a lot of time making the the actual code faster so kudos to them for that because no one likes to sit around waiting um so let's see oh here's another one that's really important and so simple but it is really great and that is remember we've been making collections so I'm going to go and make a collection down here and I say I want these three images in my collection when I go to make the collection created collection I have the option of naming it so it's a test collection and I can put it wherever I wanted I can include the selected photos aiken make virtual copies but at the same time aiken said it as a target collection so a target collection before I do this the target collection if you right click a collection so if you right click this collection you can set it as a target collection if you set something is a target collection, then if you go in and find an image that you like, you can either hit the bee key or you can click on this little circle at the top of the top right hand corner and if you do that it adds it to the target collection so it's a one handed operation so if I'm if I'm holding my daughter in my laugh while I'm editing I only have one hand and I can just scroll through in any image that I want to see I can just click on b or it can push this little circle it's one handed and I'm adding stuff to the target collection so now those images aaron the target collection so at making a target collection is simple is making a target and then right clicking it and then setting is the target collection but the problem is we were always making target collections or collections and then having to scroll down to the target collection and telling it to be the target collection and then going back up toe work on our photos so it's just a waste of time. So now when we make a collection create the collection and you know we call it whatever you want to call it if we click on set as target collection and hit create that collection is made and becomes the target collection so that any other things that we do you know, if we like this image we just said it is the target collection and now it's it is the target collection it's in there see that so that's a that's a really good advancement that they've made that's just a simple little thing that saves a couple minutes here and there but it's it's brilliant it's perfect. So I love the target collection thing. Okay, um let's go to the print module. So in the print module, one of the things that I've disliked in the print module for a very long time is the fact that the text was not always clear and so when people would make a image and they would want tio make like a block image out of it or something like that when they exported it that the text was always a little bit fuzzy when it would go on the block it and then the same thing when you exported an image and put a uh a watermark on it it was always just a little bit soft it wasn't really, really chris beautiful text well because they've changed the engine that runs the text. Now when you're exporting images from the print module and you're putting text or a logo on it or when you're exporting them and adding a watermark to him in the export dialog box it's crisp clear beautiful text it's absolutely beautiful text so I've actually exported it and I've looked at it and it's just it's super clear so let's just take this there's our image what I've done is I've created a single image contact sheet option where it looks like a polaroid so let's not let me just show you how I did that really quickly so you get a sense the left right and top margins are all point to five the bottom margin is point eight and then of course I only have one road in one column so it's just a square and then I and you know any image that's in there is going to look like a little polaroid and that is going to go on my block so or it could be like a an instagram or something like that and you can also by the way if you want it to be absolutely square just say keep it square and now it's absolutely square but see how it changed here so we have to go up to the top margin and the left and the right and just make sure that it's it's correct act so that we take the jobs two five goto top margin and on the top we just need to bring it down enough and bring the bottom down this way so that they all kind of even out like that and then we will go there so I'm trying I just want that to be equal enough that it looks more like a polaroid as opposed to uh oh sorry this is scott let me let me make sure this is square so we have to change the paper size go to the paper size and manage the custom size and make sure it's an actual square sides so at a at a size here on the paper just call it square and then just make this ten by ten and then don't give it any you want zero zero zero zero and hit ok there we go so now we have a square file size now we don't want this to be square I apologize for that I was not correct there they're right there see that that's what we want so that it that you want the paper to be square and then you want the inside to be not quite so square so that it looks more like a polaroid once you've done that, then you can change your identity plate to be whatever you want it to be. You could make it your logo or whatever and then you're going tio uh that's it that's all you need to do and then you're going to come up here and you're going to create a a new template and when you create that template, you put it for screen and you're going to call this polaroid create so now we have a polaroid template on dh then, of course, down at the bottom you wanted to be a j peg file you want it to be it's seventy two d p I print sharpening low and then you want to have one hundred percent quality and then here remember yesterday or the day before we talked about it was yesterday we talked about this custom filed to mention right? And it was all wonky kind of messed up it see that it doesn't mess it up remember when I click this the other day it when I clicked it reform out and everything because it thought I was now it's sze not reformatting anything it's just saying what dimension do you want to go out at so now we just have to do that math of seventy two d p I at what printed size equals how many pixels okay, so it's just division which none of us are any good at but well I think what we say is nine for nine forty four nine point four four four by nine point four four four so now we have nine four by nine for and that's the dimensions and it messed it up a little bit because it it saw me changing things we just have the bring those in a little bit there. Okay, so it's nine four four by nine four four so we know exactly how many pixels it's going to be now and then all I have to do is hit print to file I'll save it on my desktop call it uh test save and that's going to export that file looking just like that and then we just posted on our our website let me quit photo shop here so there it is so that's our little test there and we can post that our site now here's a little tip when you're sending stuff out through the print module if you go to info on that file, you'll notice that there aren't any there are any key words on it anymore the reason there are any key words on it is that it's printing out a brand new j peg and it's not using the information from that j peg to print it out ought to but it's not, and so what we have to do then the best way to deal with this is to whenever you're going to send out files like this taub log well you want to do is go back to your library and you want to re import those files, so we're going tio reimport our file back in by clicking on import and going to the folder where they exist in our case, they exist inside of the I didn't put them into the job folder, I put them into the on the desktop, so I'm going to need to let me put this in a folder on, so where we should have put it is into our folder of the job itself should have put it in here, and so we would call that blawg and put them put export them into the blawg folder. So then when you come back here, you would go and find that job here and you would import that blawg folder and hit choose or you could just go to the job folder and right click it and you could synchronize it and it's going to bring in any new photos and look here they are that's the new photo import it and now it's right next to the other one so then if I go to the job folder and I'm looking at lives from looking at that job folder, then I can see that image and it's also next to it's not next to because it was created after it but you can take the information from hey let's do this this is the easiest way to do it let's take it into that collection grab it, put it in that collection and now it's sitting next to it so you can take all the data from here highlight both of them sink the metadata and now all the metadata from this file is being put onto that file then when you send this out it's going to have that information and the thing is is you don't even have to export it again. Remember we talked on monday about sinking metadata and using metadata and there happens to be a metadata menu where we can save metadata into a file because it's a j peg you can take all of your information your metadata information and shove it into that file and hits save to metadata and now we've got all that metadata inside of there, so if I hide this and I go to that job, I can literally take the same j peg I don't have to export the j peg, take the same j peg and upload it to my blogged because now it has the key words, so just just as a a warning, if you're off exporting images through the print module, they don't have the all the metadata in him, so you want to bring him back in and sink the meditative across to them, okay, so that's just ah, no, I know that was a long diversion, but ok, so at this point in light room five, there is no reason to go to photo shop to put any kind of a logo on your on your images. Because the in the export dialog box and in the print module, the water marking function is so clear and beautiful that you don't need to be inside of photo shop to get that crisp text and stuff. It's really it's quite nice, so just start playing with that and see what you can do in there and it's. Pretty impressive. Um, really quick way have some questions we dio the terms air, really curious and they're loving watching, watching the difference. There were a few questions about the the new process version difference between light room five and four could you maybe walk through, walk through the differences? Okay, well, kind of a comparison. Contrast, we have a handful of kind of apples to oranges, questions between light room for in like five so I don't know if this is a good time for that. The thing is, is there are any there's not a different process version there's not ok, so that's a simple answer. See if you go to the camera calibration you see that two thousand twelve is the current process version, and two thousand ten is lightened three so there's no difference in light room four and five as to the process version it's the same raw engine that's running it so there's no changes in the sliders and how they operate things like that. So it's it's not a process version change, so you don't have to worry about that. In fact, a lot of people always people asked me about presets stuff duel of the presets work enlightened three and four absolutely if they're designed correctly, they'll work because the process version doesn't change enough from light room four delight from five will they work? Absolutely because process change doesn't change it all it's the same process version sorry, I don't know if this makes sense, but there's a end end um saying no, the process version and making presets oh, ok, so when you're making a preset there are a couple things that are new, like the upright version so yeah, it'll change a little bit but not much because if you look at all of the esso white balance hasn't changed none of the check boxes have changed there's very few changes in what you're making a preset with the only changes the upright version and there's up right transforms their upright mode is there um there's there's very little stuff that has changed in the way of making a preset so your lot any precept that you've made enlightened four is there's going to be no difference in like five? The only difference in light and five is that now you can add a couple extra items in there and of course inside of light from five in the in the adjustment preset or the the targeted adjustment areas here those you you obviously have this tool you have the radio mask tool and so that one you can use all of the same presets because it's still got all the same sliders see that there's no difference in the sliders here so it can still I can still go to this radio filter and I can put, you know, burn baby burn in there right? And and then I can use burn, baby burn and say ok, I want you know this to burn burn baby burn lips didn't mean to do that one click on that adjust it twirl it inverted so you know I can use all of my presets in light room find that were in line for so there's really not a lot of difference there so you're pretty safe to be able to start using everything that you were using and light for inside of light five it's just there's going to be a couple little extra tools there that you can start adding that's great a lot of people were asking can we still used erin's presets yeah there's no there's not one pre set in light room for that won't work in like five and there's in my presets there's not any light room presets that were in three that won't work in five so it's like from three, four or five so they're designed correctly they'll work on all three of those versions if they're not designed correctly, they'll work in foreign like poorly designed presets not mine other design processes that are poorly designed will work and foreign five just fine because there's really no process change poorly designed presets that were poorly designed and lighting three won't work and four because they don't design them correctly so there's process changes and same thing with working with catalogues right it's just one just jumper you'll be able to jump right into five you will once it's it's a legitimate software right now it's beta so you cannot upgrade from light room four delight and five you can't do it so you used to have to start a brand new catalog, so if you want to play around with flight five, you download the beta and you start a new catalog and you start importing some files into it, playing with it that the reason they do that is they don't want you upgrading your files and then find out there's a problem with their beta, you know, and the baby debate is pretty secure. S oh, you know, I don't see any reason why you wouldn't play around with it with files, but, you know, just just be aware that it's a beta, so there's no, they're not saying that it's perfect, yet it may do words, and in fact, one of the wonky things that I've seen right now so far is that if you try and export a slideshow from it, it seems to just sit there and not export the slide show, or maybe it was going to take an hour and a half, whereas like, four to five minutes so there's some little things that you'll notice in there that aren't quite right, and they're just working on it. They want to see what you think of it, cool, then, to use your term, this could be a wonky thing within later but apparently someone says that when you add it and photoshopped from like five it says it requires a c r eight but it's not available yet so that when you get a message that says you don't have the latest a cr for photo shop just have light room process the photo shop file okay, so you could it'll ask you do you want me to just process inside of light room just say yes light room will make because it has the version it's talking about so it'll process it inside of light room and then send it to photo shop, which I wish it was just an option anyway because I don't use photo shop so little that I don't want to update the a c r and photo shot of care you know I just want to process it here and then I'll send it to photo shop so but yeah, I just just have light room process that final excellent another question from the difference between foreign five when you go to an external editor from later in five, the edited version does not return to the catalogue as it doesn't like room for is there any way to fix the problem? Just a wonky thing wonky okay, yeah just on dh those air things that as you see them report them s o if you're having an issue where when you when you do a round trip and it's not returning that's, just something you need to write down and go in and send a note to adobe and say, hey, I'm having an issue and I'm not getting a return, but I'm gonna make a vote cool and jared fan would like to know if when you have a lot of spot edits in light room for it goes to a crawl do you know if this is improved in light room five? Neither speed you know, I didn't know this did you see that screen name jared fan? I haven't noticed this extreme slowdown there always will be some slowdown because that's a lot of work for light room to be doing on a raw file, but I haven't noticed a cz much slowdown it's definitely faster it will get slower, I promise you that light room five if you start doing like five hundred like edits on a it's going to get slower but a cz fuse I've done so far, which maybe ten or fifteen I haven't noticed a big slowdown the last time I had to do some work on a a file with a bunch of gnats flying around eso there was all these glowy nats because I had back white happening the last time I did that it was it was I just did it and photo shop because I just it's faster to do a photo shop I would have to go back to that file and try it to see because it was like one hundred gnats and so I'll have to try it and see if it does that but it didn't seem too when I'm doing like five or ten of them it doesn't seem to slow down so yeah, but you're right it does go to a clock crawl in lightning for so I don't if you're going to get to this I think was reading long reading that light one five last night on dh and then they say there was like a healing brush with the clone tool now I loved it all right all right, so here we are we have this photo and we want to you know, do something get rid of something let's I don't know what we want to get rid of wonder if there's a better image for us to all there is here this okay, so we go into this file and we're in the developed module and we want to get rid of a kid. We only want this kid not this kid and so we can take our our spot removal a tool and you could just go like this and say, ok, I want to get rid of this kid so you click on it and then you you know I have successfully removed a kid, right? But now I've got these little extra things here and stuff like that, so but then you would come in and say okay, now that I want to get rid of that extra flair so I'm going to grab that and move it down here and I'm going to move this over here and now I've gotten rid of that extra flair there's a little bit more flare over there and so this is what you would do in light room for as you would you would kind of work on these types of situations and you would have to have them build a series of bubbles to get rid of the kid, but the kid's gone now so we're good we only have one child, but what what's left so there's a shadow from this ghost and imagine trying to build a siri's of circles all the way down and they're going and as you do it, they're going to spill on have you seen that when you get close to a shadow, it spills over? So instead of doing that, we're going to go back to the brush healing tool and this time we're just going to click and drag and now we can copy this from wherever we want to copy so let's just say right there and now we have remove the shadow too can everybody say so that's pretty nice so it's just you can click once and that creates a circular one or you can click and drag and that creates and you can paint you know as intricately is you want to paint and then it creates a shape of that nature and then just becomes a clone for the shape okay, so that's that's new to the healing brush so that's a fantastic little item you know the other interesting item that is in light room up in these brushes area is that you can clone a brush so if I were to take a brush and say, you know, do something that brightened something up and I click on it and I kind of brighten it up there like that if I hold down I think it's the what is it the thing it's the command key or maybe it's command shift key there so it just doubled it so I'm I'm adding so if I delete this one I call them there it's not them so there's and here it's option it's one of these keys and I don't know what keith is hold on there we go it's option command that's the key if you click on option command and click a pin it doubles it and then triples it on see that it just keeps adding mohr of those same so now he's like in a little alien ah but but still, which is a problem? You can't grab it and move it because originally the idea behind duplicating a pin was that then you could take that pin and move it somewhere else so that if you had three children and you had successfully worked on one, you could just duplicate it and move it to the next and duplicate it moved to the next or better yet had you worked on one image and you had it all brightened and then you went to the next image and synchronized it and the kidded moved a little bit you could just take the pen and move it over a little bit, so we still want to move the pin, but at this point you can't move the pen, you could just duplicate it and so there's it's I hope that what they're attempting to do is get us some way to be able to move the pin but you know there's no there's, no command that will move the pen, so but we can delete the pens or with as that many pins it's better just to go in and and cut the pens away. So if we can just do our little cutter tool where's, or is the cutter tool on ly available, what was it all is that when I said it was anyway that's a lot of deleting to do so I made a lot of pens there, but so so they clearly are interested in somehow duplicating those pins, but I don't think that it's in its full state of readiness, whatever they're attempting to do there. So anyway, just be aware that at one point they're going toe obviously be doing something with the duplication of those pins, I suppose, okay, you know, here's, another thing that I really like is the you're now in the preferences menu, you have the ability to change the art know it, I think it's in the human you sorry in the option view menu, maybe yeah, so you have the ability to change the tent of the colors, so when you make a color like a red green, when you color making color label, you have the ability to change the tent of the color. So whether it's a fifty per cent ten or whether it's a ten percent ten because if you do a fifty percent back in the default days when it was all twenty percent ten, you couldn't see the color. So you you color yellow and you couldn't see that it was yellow. Now, if you color at yellow, you really see that it's yellow if you fifty percent, so if you're having a hard time seeing the color, just go to your view menu view options and then just change it ten percent c you could barely see that it's yellow twenty percent is ok thirty percent I think is better than I can actually see that it's yellow so that's that's an interesting you've changed to it as well um let's see okay now for the big mother lode I've been saving this one because I think this is the most important thing that has happened and I'm going to show this with my little indie photos here and you'll notice that there's a thing right under the history graham and it says original plus smart preview when you import files you can change something here that says build smart previews it's a new option when you're importing and what it's doing is it's giving you inside the catalog a little tiny raw image in the catalog which means that if you import things and build the smart preview I want you to see what happens when I right click this and ejected the photos no longer exist okay usually in light room for at that point you would go to the developed module and you wouldn't be able to do anything here now I'm just going tio unplug I really want you to understand that the photos air here so these could be in timbuktu for all I care setting him there so that you can see they're not it's like a magician trick though that's where the photos are all I have is my catalog now I can take this catalog on the plane with me and I can do all the adjustments that I would like to do anything I like to do to the photo is available to me now that all of it everything lends corrections split toning doesn't matter what I want to dio I don't have so gone are the days where I have to copy all of my files and take them with me on the road at this point all I have to do is take whatever catalog I want to work on copy it over to the drive and take it with me that's it that's all I need as long as I'm building those smart previews I could be on the road working on this image and and you think ok well that's great jared but then when you're on the road and you want to share the images they're not connected right so let's go to this image which I think is totally cute and let's go to brighten it up just a little bit and we're going to do a radio mask here we're gonna dio kind of ah one stop burn and we're just going to go like that around rotate it a little bit go so I don't want it to be too drastic a burn but just a little bit okay so uh that's all I need to do to it and now again so that um so we're ready and then I'm going to export, but the files aren't there, but I can still export an image I can resize that image. What in the world is going on? Long edge six hundred and eighty pixels that's the size of my blawg I'm going to do eighty five quality and I'm going to water market see that and I'm going to export it let's put it on the desktop because I'm going to want to post it and export done hide that go to that and voila! How did it do that? Because as a little tiny raw file and that raw file is big enough to export basic photos now you can't export as thirty by forty, but you can certainly use it for sharing two clients for putting on blog's for posting. You can do all of that, no problem and you don't even have the files, but because it has all the little information in it, you can zoom in look at that, I can see that it's sharp aiken aiken work on the way it looks I could give it a little clarity. I can do everything I can do to my raw file and I don't even have the files that changes everything about the way you store your images no longer do you even need to store images on your on your desktop no longer do you even have tohave a dr attached go get your I'm back now you don't need a stack of drives all you need to do is put your ross on whatever drive they're going to be on plug him in build your catalog was resides inside of your your hard drive your solid state hard drive so it's super fast doesn't need all that space you draw this in build the the smart previews unplug it and store it securely and you'll work on these and no one can touch the original files because there's somewhere else and then when you're ready and you're going to export the final files you plug in this drive they light back up and you export all your big files get and wrap it up and then you are kind that so gone are the days when you actually need a dr attached that's awesome and that's a game changer yeah well this help with transferring large files to shoot dot edit maybe it's a good idea right so at one point why would you have to send in those yeah absolutely so there there are so many possibilities as a result of this being able to remove this and work on those files that's a game changer and there's when when light room five comes out if you don't upgrade to it that's crazy crazy cause faster it's got some cool tools in it but that alone is huge and so I've seen so many little you know comments on right room five oh it's ok it's ok people don't recognize how important that is it's huge it will change everything about the way you work so yes so how much room do these little previews little rock previous take well let's take a look at it so we can go to this job itself so let's go teo our pictures folder in tow light room and let's look at this catalog because that's what we're looking at right now is the so we're looking at the catalog with all that you've got to make sure we're looking at the right catalog before say this see how? See how there's question marks on everything that's because none of them are attached so we are looking at go make sure there I think this is yeah that's the one we're looking at so this file or this light room catalog right here the catalog itself is twenty three megabytes and the regular previews are one point two one gigabytes and the smart previews are one point one nine gigabytes not a lot of space that's a fairly small thing to deal with the regular ones want the regular ones over here are one to one so that one to one previews are actually bigger than these smart previous so mean you khun three jobs that air on there and I've got him in a total of about three gigabytes so it's totally portable on a usb three connection or a thunderball connection that's less than a minute or two of transfer so it's completely completely changed the way we're going to do things so it's just a matter of waiting until we finally have the full light room five to play with but for now it's it it's a solid release a solid beta so go go grab it, play with it and start messing around with it because you want to get used to the things that you're going to be using because as soon as it comes out you want to be using it because it will change the way you're working on your photos so that is light room five I am happy to answer questions we can go to questions now and and there's a lot there's a lot more in there but this is those were the those of the game changes I think ok um kind of going back a little bit vision photo gas since he likes light room over photo shop can even give us an example of lighter five processing on a face please on then a few others were saying yes please please please on a face a face so editing detailed at its I think, okay, well if I'm if I'm doing something on a face, let me see if I have something close enough to be a on a face looks like we're going back teo our family portrait session because I know I have some work here there we go we're going to use this one so if I were working on a a portrait inside of white room, the first thing that you've got to do is you got to get rid of any kind of major blemishes and again if I'm going to if I'm working on a teenager that's got a lot of blemishes I'm going to photo shop that's just that's just the way it is you can't you can't really work on you know, on acne ridden teenager inside of light room because it was just it's just there's too much I'm going to attach this back to the computer because I want if I'm doing anything major I would love for you to be able to see the original file so in this case I'm going to go over and just get rid of any kind of major blemishes like that when I think is going toe so I'm just looking for things that are out of place and my goal and in re touching someone is not to make them look perfect it's just to get rid of kind of offending mark so like you can see how there's a little bit of fleck flaky skin right there so those are things that I'm interested in getting rid of and so I'll get rid of those types of little flaky marks but I'm not going to get rid of tons of other things so that's operating pretty fast when you say I think it's not clunky it still dragging nice and smooth so it's sze done a pretty good job but not not getting all uh slow on me so I'm just getting rid of areas that I think are a little bit too ellipse and went the wrong direction and that was it really makes the wrong decision so let's zoom out that's funny I would like to see that view um so let's zoom in and see if there's any more areas that were really worried about okay there's there's an area right there or there that I could work on so I can come in and just do that one and that one and notice I'm not sure it looks like I'm using the I'm using the photoshopped version of a healing brush because it's not showing you those little circles that's because I turned the overlay off so you can turn it on never and it doesn't show it to you unless you need it so we can just kind of zoom around and see but that all looks pretty good I think maybe there's one right there that needs to be taken care of on one right there there okay so now he's taking care of when it comes to skin like retouching and then we'll go in and just the first thing I want to do is just get stepped skin tone correct so I need to make sure it's correct for his skin tone and once I have a skin tone correct then I'm going to come down to whether I want to do it you know one of the things you have to ask yourself is do I want this? Do I wantto overcompensate on clarity and like pump it up or do I want to soften it up so that's a question to ask yourself and if if you want some clarity because you want the hair to stand out but then you don't want clarity in the face because you want to soften it up a little bit then you would go into the brush tool and you would come you go down to your skin so where's my skin guy right here skin softening and this is probably too much but if you keep your if you keep your your flow down to like thirty or so then aiken see that so I really don't want to I don't want to soften it all up everywhere but there you go see so now I softened it up a little bit and I'll give you an idea of what it looks like if I turn it off I turned it on me zuman well that's too much assume but that's what we're going to get so there's this skin, and if I turn it on and off, you can see there's there's, the skin softened and there it's a little bit see that it's, just like, but it will make him look just a little bit better and that's all he needs. I mean, really, how much editing does a little kid need? Like? They have almost perfect skin. I'm ready to take all of them think they have such great personalities to there's so funny, they just and that the oldest one is just so serious. And then the other, you know, this one, this one's just kind of cool, and then the other one is just a who I won't get that hair. Yeah, it is so funny. So and then, once I've got that, I'll do any burning and dodging that I want, but the burning and dodging mostly is a matter of just, you know, brightening up like of you, if you go here and just brighten up this side of the face just a little bit more, and then you go on the other side and just do a little bit of light burning on this side, you actually get a really beautiful, like a nice, you know, you get you get into nice volume, so the shape of the face and then if I need to I can go in and use the bright ning to just pop in a little bit of extra brightness there or on dh worst case scenario if there's not enough light you can always zoom in two you want to go like eight times so that you come on to the I like this this this will be my final trick come on there you the final trick we go into the brush and we're going to go into our turn the lights on and then we make this brush is tiny is we can write like that and we just kind of catch right there yeah we're just going to add what kind do you guys want a soft box we're gonna make a soft box there we go it's still soft box in the eye so then when I zoom out let's go to one for one so and I need teo did I have oh I had auto mask on that's why I was doing that funky thing hold on them you zoom in a little bit further so if you have auto mask on it will actually try and find edges so that's why I was doing that weird stuff so I'm just going to go in and create kind of a soft box looking thing there cool all right so this is so the first thing you do is create the shape like that. And then after that, you can kind of create a little bit of a spill around it. So you just kind of go like this because because no boxes that saw I mean, it's sze definitely not going to be that clear. And then when you zoom back out and just do, phil, so you can and now you can just decide how much of that you want just by grabbing this and, you know, taking down the effect quite a bit, and then so they're so now you've got a little catch light and that only that you didn't have before it's in the wrong place. But, you know, what's. So cool the shooters had a how it could get there, right? Right. So you can you can make a catch light in someone's eye straight from light room. You don't need it. In fact, high turn lights on time inside, like I never you know. So if I've got a shot and there's a sconce over here that needs a light turned on and I can't find the power switch. No problem in light room, I'll just turn it on by brightening it up.
