Making Books in Minutes from the Book Module

We get to talk about books making books inside of white room, so we have already discussed the library module develop module talked about these the print module eso today we're going toe cover the other modules and the first thing we're going to talk about books, um, in the book module, everything that you basically a book remember when we talked about prince and you say the print it becomes a collection same thing is true for a book. So the first thing that you want to do when you are ready to make a book as you want to select a set of images and create a collection, so we're going to create a collection around this book that we're making, and so we'll just call this a wedding portrait book, and when we create that collection, we will you can you have two options. You can either just include the photos, which, again remember collections air virtual, they don't really exist, or you can make virtual copies so that you could completely readjust the images so that you would have in the bo...

ok you have your own adjustments to those images, even though you're not really changing the original images. So let's, do that let's make virtual copies of those and create, and so now. Every image that's in here is a virtual copy, which means that we can re adjust them to match each other on pages but not necessarily change the original version of the of the image that we've say left in color but we want this one in black and white because it looks better in the book, so making a virtual copy before you make the book is a good idea because then you can do whatever you want to it however, if you are afraid that you'll then change the copy here and like it, maybe you wanna just import them all into the collection as the original images it's really up to you but in this case will make virtual copies so we could do whatever we want to with the images once we've got ourselves a collection, then select everything go to the book module and when we go into the book module it always takes a little while to get into the book module because it's kind of collecting itself and um we can at that point where we've got what I meant it's already we've already got a book structured in here so let's go into the book area here and let's clear the layout so that's just right down about midway down on that on the right hand panel let's clear the layout so that we have a brand new book and what you'll see here in this book is that we've got a back cover a front cover and then we've got this is the inside of the front cover this is the inside of the back cover and here's the first and last page so if you were to print this book as it is now you would have a blank cover and you'd have a you'd have one page in the center you'd have the cover cover and one date right so that's what we're seeing here in the layout let's go around and let's just look at the book module so the book module has a preview over here just like all other areas haven't preview on dh you can of course fit go one for one or even further in a four to one so you have the ability to look at your book in various zoom states below that you have collections and that's the only thing you have down here is the collections but a collection is where you would find all your images so you would go back and forth between your images and also remember you have the ability to go remember down here in the film strip right about the film strip you always have the ability to click on this dropdown in you and choose recent sources so you don't necessarily have to go back to the library to find other images you can always do that right here in the recent sources okay, so the collection that we have currently is twenty five images down here from the shoot that we put into our our little, our collection, once we have worked on a book and we save the book, then that will become its own collection, but it will have this little book icon next to it because it's, a saved book, which has saved book, is really just a collection, but it's called the saved book because it also has the book information in it, so let's, let's make that. Now, I prefer to save the book right off the bat just so that I know I have it saved once it saved, by the way, as you work on it, it's constantly saving so there's, not a second save that you do, you don't say that every time, like you would say, a photoshopped document that you're working on, so once we're going to save this book as it is, so we had saved the book, and we're going to name this a wedding portrait book, uh, book, because we already have wedding portrait book so, so wedding, portrait, book, book, that's how we're gonna call that, and we're going to save it inside of the wedding portrait book, okay, so it's kind of part of that collection, and we're going to hit save and now we have see that we can collapse this here's the wedding portrait book that has all of our images in it and here's the wedding portrait book all right notice that we lost our images the reason we lost our images because it thinks we didn't want any of those images in the book because it didn't we didn't put them in the book but we can always grab those images here and highlight all of them and a long go back to this highlight thes and I think we can drag him from here right in there see that so now and if I wanted to I could go different sources so I could go back to the entire ordeal awning wedding and I could go look for other images that I want in there and remember we've got our filter here so I can filter for flagged images and I can say oh, well, I wanted this image in here to what's increase the size I wanted this image or I wanted say uh this image this further out image or whatever so whatever image I wanted that I didn't quite get I could always grab it and drag it into that collection or that book collection then when I click on it I've got them here they're not here they have been added to the book but they're just here okay so they're in the film strip ready to be used okay, so now that we have our book set up and it saved now notice that there's no save option above the book anymore that's, because everything I do is constantly being saved. All right, so below the the collection's ariel say that you have an export book to pdf button so that's something that you would obviously afterwards, but just know that it's there and notice that it's in the same place that you would find the export button in the library module. So generally speaking, everywhere in light room, you're going to find that the buttons are kind of in the same place, and you do the same things on this on the same sides of you know, so all the collections are always on the left side, all your adjustments and settings there on the right side. Ok, so now let's, go over here and look at these settings inside of the book setting panel. You have the book, which is what kind of book you're going to make, so you can either make a blur book. So blurb is for anyone who doesn't know what blurb is blurb is an online system that you can submit images into the system they have their own bookmaker online, they have aa book maker that you can download and put on your computer, and now they have a module inside of adobe and they're a really good book maker they do a good job but so blurb is the first place you can go you just build this book and then you'll be able to send it from white room to blurb and it will you can order it so it'll just build the book and then you just go online and pay for however many copies you want and they will send him to so that's the first option that you have the second option is to create a pdf and the pdf is just going to be a pdf book and then you could send it to whoever you want to have printed or you could send it as a pdf digital book to someone or something like that this is not making a e book by the way it's just making a pdf ok? And then you can also export all the pages is j pegs which again you could then send to whatever bookmaker or wherever you want to go. The thing to be aware of at this current time is that the book module is not sending out a perfectly square book even though this is a perfectly square, so like for instance, if I'm choosing say aye twelve by twelve perfectly square book if that's what I'm going to choose it's not actually sending out a ten by ten or a twelve by twelve j peg it's actually like nine point six five whatever inches by ten point whatever it is it's not an actually square damage that it's sending out because blurbs size is very specific and it's not actually twelve by twelve when you print to twelve twelve by twelve book and as a result of that, the problem is that then if you send jay pegs that air not the right size to your bookmaker, then they have to crop somewhere because not square so then you have to anticipate the crop and design for the crop so it's a little little bit of ah it's a bad workflow. So really if you're going to make a book, the best place to go is if you're making a book in here, the best place right now is to go to blurb and they're not expensive books and they do a good job so they're they're worth going to, but I'm looking forward to the time where they fix that where the j peg coming out is going to actually be the ten by ten because at that point, then you could send your book anywhere you want. So I've been shouting for that for many years, so okay, hopefully that will be fixed sometime in like five we'll see okay, so let's let's start with the blur of option and take a look at these book sizes and no matter where you go, whether it's pdf or j peg you're still going on ly have blurbs specific sizes so you'll have a seven by seven eight by ten and ten by eight thirteen by eleven and twelve by twelve those ear options currently hopefully at one point will build that input our own options there and you can choose a hardcover rap softcover or a dust jacket and that's on you if you're in the blur of option, you also get to choose your paper so you can choose whether you want luster, matt uncoated or pearl photo paper um and you can choose whether or not you want blurbs logo on or off so professionally speaking, I'm going to turn it on c c logo page on local page off so logo page on notice the price starts at thirty six dollars if I turn it off it goes to forty four dollars so you get a discount for putting a logo for blurb and advertising for them I'm not going to advertise for blurb so I'm gonna pay the extra money okay all right so that's those are the options for paper and if you go to pdf you obviously on ly get the cover and the size of the paper and then if you go to j peg you don't get the size of the paper and the cover itself, okay when you go into j peg that's when you're going to choose your j peg quality and if you're not choosing one hundred percent quality, I don't understand you ok? So one hundred percent quality on the j peg and then you can choose any of your profiles and notice that there's an other we talked about profiles yesterday and making profiles so you can choose any profile for your printer that you like so if you are printing your book to your epson or your cannon or whatever printer you can then choose that profile so that that j peg will go out with that profile attached to it or or any other profile. So just be aware that you can choose any of these profiles all right? And then also you have the ability to sharpen and again I'm going to always do a low sharpening and usually imprinting on a matte paper so that's what I'm gonna do um as you go to pdf again, you still have the quality issues there, but when you go to blurb no quality issues because they're going to send out the very best file and they're going to send it in the best, uh color profile for that so I'm not giving that option because they're going to control ok, so now we go into the auto layout area and the auto leo is a fantastic tool it gets he started so let's start with an auto layout but we've got to we've got to know how to create that so in the auto lay out there is a preset and I can choose all sorts of presets but we're going to make one so when you make a preset for auto layout, you get to choose the left page in the right page so on the left page you can say I want a random layout from favorites with one image on them. Now first, before we do this we have to go on make favorites so here is the page options right below the auto paid auto layout is the page options and if you click on this little here's the page if you click on right next to it there's a little drop down menu and if you click on it you can see that I've got all sorts of different options for layouts one photo to photo for photo multiple photos to page spreads et cetera and I've got a favorites but I have no favorites right now so what I'm going to do is I'm going to go through and mark things is favorites by simply right clicking on the page and marking it is a favorite so these are my favorite types of layouts here so I am giving you favorite layouts and ok, those are my favorite one photo layouts now let's go to two photo layouts and let's see if I have some that I want to do here let's see, I think I would prefer that I like that lay on I like this lay out like this layout I like this later. Okay, so those are my two photo layouts let's go toe three photos I like this layout I like this layout and I like this layout then I got a four what do I want for four? I like uh I just want a grid where's the grid there we go there's a grid and I like this layout too. Ok? So we've got that lay on then of course I like my two page spreads let's do no, we can't add those to our auto layout. Okay, so now I have favorites those air all of my options so choose only the ones you like and put them in your favorites. Once you've got that set up, then you can go back to create your auto layout. And now you can say I want to random from favorites on ly one or two or three or four you can choose which ones you're willing to have on that and I'm going to actually you know what let's do a fixed lay on the left hand page and lets on lee do a little photo so something like one photo I just want a small photo let's do that one that's a big photo but let's do that one ok, so we're going to do one photo on that page and there's some advancements in light room five that will talk about at the end of the day that will kind of soup that up a little bit but okay, so uh we can zoom to fit fit or we can fill so if you fit if it's a square picture and you are me if it's a square photo area so notice that we made square if you say fit, then you don't fit your horizontal picture into that area if you say fill it will zoom in to fill that entire area so what we want to do is fit because we don't want to randomly trump our image on dh then you can add photo captions, but unfortunately light room has not allowed it allowed you to add the photo caption being the file name, which seems like the most basic piece of information that you could put in there but they haven't done that yet and this is another thing point that I've been trying to get them to work with, so hopefully they will do that as well, but we'll see when that happens okay, so but I'm not going to add any photo caption so what's going to happen is every single left page is always going to have one picture on it and then on the right page weaken, do random from favorites and weaken say up to four so you can choose one, two, three or four on that page and it'll just randomly select those, okay, and I'm again going to fit not phil those those edges, ok? And then, of course, you can match the long edge, which means that it's going to look it's, you don't want a vertical put in a horizontal space, so it'll it'll try and match those up. Ok, so now aiken create a preset just like in every other drop down menu I'm going to save current settings is a new pre set, and I'm going to say, this is one left foot uh, let's say four random, right? So that just tells me what what the layout situation is and I had create and now I'm going to get done. So now that is my my auto leo template that I have created. So now, if I highlight all of my images down here in the film strip, so click on the first one and shift click to the last one now I'm going toe, auto layout and it's going to choose from all these images and it's gonna auto lay out my book, so it's done, okay, so now I have spilled all these images in now it's just a matter of going in and tweaking it of course it's going to take the first image and throw it on the the front and the last image and put it on the back so in that case we're going to do is we're going to choose our cover image and I already know what my cover image is going to be because it's the it's the one I've I put um I printed for them so there is the cover and I can choose to zoom it out so that its full frame or I can zoom in so that it it matches the frame so there's my cover and then on the back I can just hit delete and that's going to remove that one ok? So there's auto layout so now let's talk about a couple of the other things that will be using before we start editing this book. So underneath the auto layout is your page layout and every time you want to work on a page you khun choose a page like this and you can then add a page so if I choose a page so in this case because were selected on the cover I can choose the cover layout but if I go to a page and I selected now on pages and I could say ok let's see a two up photo page that looks like this and see how it changed that I can undo that but it changed the layout based on but you can do the same thing over here there's a little drop down here and you can choose pages as well so either way you can choose the pages here or you can choose the pages here if you need to add an extra page because you want to throw something in there you can do that by simply clicking on at a page at a blank page and it just adds a blank page in there and then you can do whatever you want with that simply choose your your page layout and then start throwing images in there or even text so you can type text in here or you can choose to have the text auto filled by the auto bail time all right so we are let me just delete this page so I'm going to hit delete o actually at the right click it and had to leave so let's see remove page there we go all right so we removed the page now we're going to go down to the bottom mary here if you show the guides then you get to see ok here's my this is my bleeder my my my margin area you can see if if you add filler text then when you go to any kind of a text area it shows you what what text is there and then if you click on it it goes away because you're gonna type in but then when you so they're so now there's no text but it's just showing you there so that you know that there's text that you could put there okay but if you don't put any tax it's not going to print you don't need it so just turn off the filler text and you're not gonna have random so for instance I'm not gonna type anything in there I just wanted the design of the photos so I don't need to type anything in there they're just there okay? So it gives you the plus page bleed area see that so that shows you this gray area shows you danger zone basically they're going toe probably crop that off kind so if you know it's a good idea when you're designing to have these on so that you can see ok, this is my bleed area that's what gets cut off and then this is the safe area that little line is yours is your safe that's your margin you don't want to put anything important there. So for instance, if I'm doing this front cover and I know that it's probably going to get cut up to there as possible, I don't want to put you know, there well, I can't get a moment while I guess it kind of zoom so I wouldn't want his face you know somewhere near I wouldn't want his face in here because it's probably going to get cut so that just tells you that if you're here you're safe so his arms not going to get cut off so much like my finger was cut off so I give my brothers are hard time about that all the time they never live it down they're so we're obviously safe here were very safe okay, so that's the guidelines coming down here this patting is really important so for instance this image right here a lot of people look at the book module in light room and they think well there's not enough templates you know, because there's there's there's only like twenty one one picture options and then there's twenty two picture options and it just it just seems like I would like to design it myself but in actuality you can pretty much design anything you want in here for instance if I want to put this in some weird space I'll have to do is click on here and let's just say I want to put it we're gonna goto one photo and we're going to go to a full bleed so now I can put it anywhere I want on the page how do I do that? I can just create patting that so by creating a patting I'm putting it in the center and I could make it a small is I want what if I want to put it up over here that's fine just unlinked the padding and now I'm going to move this you know, anywhere I want here so I can move it down and move around and move it over here aiken then if I increase the padding on the top and decrease the padding on the say so I can put it anywhere I want on the page just by moving the padding around and so now I've got my own space for this photo so you really can design a page anyway you want put something anywhere you want generally what I do is I'll go in and I'm pretty simple designer I'm not really but I'll just move it over here so I'll just say I want it there so I just and they're so I mean that is pretty you can pretty much do whatever you need to do just by simply using the padding options but it's a really good thing to know how to do especially if you like right click here and zoom to fill so now I've zoomed to fill that so then I go say like that but then I want some kind of space around it just turn on link all the padding and then and now I've got space but see how it kept the crop that I just created so you can do a lot of really good designing justus quickly is that I know I want to square photo but I also want some white edge but I don't want it to be any of the templates that I have I wanted to be smaller than that so then I can just you know go in like that okay all right so that is cells so these air called sells these squares or cold cells then you also have photo caption so photo caption khun b automatically pulled from the actual image so in this case you can put file name on your photo caption but unfortunately you can't do it in the auto layout which means we can't make proof book so they have it available to you in the photo captions but not in the auto layout captioning which is is short sided on their part but they hopefully that'll be fixed so here's the caption and you khun use file name in news caption you can use title or you could do custom where you could type your own in there so that's available to you and of course you can offset where see that so I can put this wherever I wanted to be so if I wanted it to be here and up at the top on the right then I would just uh choose the let's type in wedding and now if I highlight that if I take that and I go down to the type area and instead of having it on the left I just go and put it on the right now I have it there and aiken you know choose um let's see where we go caption so I can choose to offset it move it anywhere you want here if I need to give it a little bit of space here well to get back to that I'm not sure if I can I should be able to put some padding where's my oh here back up to the cell and there's my patting right there so I can pat it which means see how I can shift it away from the edges so I'm patting it that za same thing as if you're working on a photo you can pad the photo you can also pad the uh the text so by patting the text and by offsetting the text you can position that text anywhere on the page that you want even though you're using it template that on lee has a spot for text right here you can move that text anywhere you want will allow you to resize the shape of that box and make it not long and thin but whiter so you can sort of stack your text well you you can choose different sizes but of course you khun you know like by entering than that that gets bigger based on how much text you want to put in it or it gets bigger by how big the text is going to be so for instance once you're done with what kind of photo captioning you want come down to the type area and choose the size of the of the font and of course the character and all that kind of stuff so and this only gets better and light room five so the text gets better it's using it's basically enlightened five uses the same text engines that they're using in in in design which is perfect so so it just gets better with light room five and I'll throw in another question if that's okay way have ah question regarding from melissa v r from m a massachusetts I guess can you choose any fonts you want in the text area or does light room only lets you work with certain fonts as long as you have the font in your fonts than it you it's good to go so yeah so here I like for instance I would never use that far I would go down and use my um typical font which is my vendetta so right there hope that's not evidence for and there's been so that's what I would be using for that fun so as long as you have it a cz long is it's available and photo shop it's available in light room um okay so now we're going to go beyond so we've done the captioning on dh by the way you khun you can add a page caption as well so you've got this is a photo caption it stays inside the photo this is a page caption so it's stuck to the page so it doesn't follow the photo it follows the page whereas the photo caption follows the follows the photo so just be aware that there's a difference there if you come down to the type tool you have all of these options available to you and let's just play with them really quickly so you know what they are obviously you've got your font selection andi you've got your your you know font changes so like bowl the tallix and things like that you also have style presets here so you can create and whatever you do in this panel right here you can then create a preset for it so that you don't have to do it again so if you're always making your new times romans uh at fifty point font and you have a certain amount of letting and tracking and turning on whatever once you done that create a preset so that you don't have to do it again so here we can change the size we can change the opacity of the text right there we can change the color of the font and again if you click on it and hold it just like we did yesterday drag it off and you can choose the font color okay but let's unfortunately, it's in the way they're going ok, so let's, go down, click hold onto it and drag and then we can choose color from the actual photographs I'm going to choose kind of a bluish. So now we've got the color is actually coming from the photograph itself. And if I if I want to zoom in on this there's, if you look right the low all of the design area, if you the tiki pulls up and down that tool bar, so if you're I need to turn on my mouse thing, I don't know where it is alternative later, I'll try and tell you what I'm clicking so the tiki, if I turn, hit the tiki, it gives me the tool bar and on the tool bar aiken do the grid mode here, which shows me the entire layout, or I could just show one page at a time, so it kind of zooms in or I can show show just one side at a time so that I can really see it well, so you can see that that's kind of a blue, and that comes from that shadow on his shirt, which is blue. Ok, so now let's, go back to our full layout mode, we also have tracking, so tracking is basically the space between your letters. So I like I like to track things pretty wide so I like a lot of space between my letters and so I generally give it a little bit mohr tracking you also have what's called the baseline which tells you where that where the texas going to fall so you can change where the baseline to the text starts and then you also have letting on dh letting hold on type in some other wedding in salt lake that's letting see that so if I change the leading seal they get closer together say that so that's letting it's the distance between the lines turning is the distance between your characters letting is the distance between the lines and if you click auto letting it will automatically choose letting based on the the size of the font and what it thinks would be right. And if you look at the baseline now one so now you can see how the basically shifting where the baseline so the baseline is actually below the area there. Okay, so columns you can add columns to your text so you could, you know, wrap this and so is you get a cz you type further and go to the next column, so if you're typing in and this is not a word processor, by the way, do you do your word processing if you're writing a book you know and you're putting photos in and then you have a whole page of text do all of your writing in a word processor and then just copy it and paste it in that will be far more effective way to do it you you'll hate typing things in here so I just use it for like little you know, titles and stuff so but yeah make sure that you don't try and type in here type your story um ok so anyway and you can create gutters the gutter is that area in the center so separates out the two columns so that's the gutter on dove course you can still on all of these things you can come up here and do patting which will that's that so patting is on the outsides gutter is on the inside ok ok so that is the type styles and then we have backgrounds so let's go to a a page here and if we wanted to create a background for this page we could come in and say all right I'm going to go to a recent file which is actually the a family portrait session that we were doing so I'm pulling up the family portrait session and I'm going to run to that that file that we did of the it's like it's just the just the mountain there's nothing unit where is that well come on where you know we're getting close where are you? There we are okay, so there is the mountain I'm going to grab that guy and I'm a drag him onto the wedding but go back to the wedding book and now I have the mountain available to me right here if I want to then put let's say on this image here I want to have this mountain available to me I can then just put it into the background and I don't want it to be available globally otherwise all of my pages have that same background to him, so I'm turning that off I'm selecting this one page and I'm grabbing this and dragging it there and now let's see, I've got a backdrop to it so you can see that let's go toe one page see that photo in the backdrop and then I can change I can do the capacity full or you know whatever you want there but that's the backdrop and I can shift the backdrop. I hope maybe I can't I don't use backdrops just like you know I'm just saying I don't use backdrops, but apparently you might want to cross eso what you'd want to do is you'd want to go, you'd want to take this image here and you'd want to go to the developed module and then you'd crop it square so you'd come in here and say, oh cam and a crop this square and then once I've copped it square then when I come back I'll have exactly what I want however this image for some reason and missing so it's offline on day as a result of that we can profit but we're online you'd want a crop it first exactly the way you want it and then you would go back to the book and then it would be centered ok ok, so we have that and so that's how you add a background to something if you want graphic if you don't want graphic background you can just apply color to the background and you could just choose one from inside the photo remember you click on the color picker and then you drag into the photo and just choose the color of the mountains there and now you've got a background that's a just a color so that is choosing a background all right so that is an overview of all the tools there and you obviously have your collections over here you have your tools down here that give you the show you the different page layouts and you have your movement between the pages here now I want to discuss the topic that we started yesterday, which is proof books so proof books become because of the limitation of the auto layout area here because when I'm here I can't choose a caption for the photo that is the actual file name I can't do it and so that limits your ability to use light room as they are mean the book module as a proof bookmaker but remember yesterday we talked about being able to make proof books inside of the print module by clicking on our blurb templates for up and then now I have a proof book, right? So if you want a stylized proof book, all you have to do is make the proof book part of the book by doing the print module remember, you print them too a j peg and then come back to your library and go to the actual job right here and instead of exporting those proof book pages to the desktop as we did yesterday, export them back to the job folder and go to the import dialog box go to the job itself so we're going to go to here and you'll see proof book that's where we put the proof book pages click on proof book and now I'm re importing those pages into light room and I'm not going to put any kind of style on it on the way in his import and now I've got the proof book pages there as well and they're all in order so all I have to do is highlight all of these images I can go down to my collection here and just drag them into the proof into that portrait book and now I have them available to me now I can auto flow those into the book so I just go we're on the book right now go to the book come down to the bottom here click on a page at a blank page that blank page needs to be a full bleed page like this grab this drag it in oh whoops along let's remove this page and let's think if we auto flow it that's I think where we want to go we're gonna hit auto flow auto layout but this time we're going to do uh let's go I got to make sure we have one that works for this one photo per page ok let's do fix layout and we're going to do from one photo this one on the left and then again we're going to do, uh fix layout one photo from the right so you see, now we've got both right and left and so let's make a new preset called full bleed groups lead pages, okay? So now that we've highlighted these and we hit auto layout, they're so now we've got all of our proof book pages. In addition, tio are other pages, so we just what we've done is now we've created and you can start with this so you what I would do is I would get I would export all of my prints from the print module as my proof book pages and we talked about making those yesterday import them in to the book at the very beginning and auto form so that you have an entire proof book then you can go on change, get your favorites and put them out front and so now you've got a proof book that has, you know, some cool design pages up front and then at the back it has all of the proofs and then you can just simply hit and that you're going to blurb and once you're done, you could just say send the book to blurb with this button down here and it will send it off the blurb and you will have a proof book made but it will be a designed styled proof book instead of a lame like, you know, the spiral bound lame proof books that are just, you know, those air lane you know, this is a beautiful proof book and at the very at the very most it'll cost uh, one hundred twenty dollars for a four hundred twenty page book or something like that it's there they're not expensive s o the really beautiful proof books um right now in light room four you can on ly order the premium papers, which means they're a little more expensive but in light room five you're going to be able to order regular papers too, so you have more options with blurb in light room five, so we'll show you some that a t end of the day, any questions? Yes, ok, definitely handfuls of ones about the page layout, so let's start with george q can there be a centerfold template or she that takes up the double truck two pages telling everyone right now, thank you. So if I'm here and I want to do a double truck kind of image, our page, I'm going to first add a page, so I gotta add to blank pages and that's going to be, you know, that that's what I want for my double truck, right? And then I'm going to click on this and I'm going to go to the two page spreads and click here and now I've got a double truck and I the reason I added a page is that if you do a double truck, sometimes it'll separate the other page it'll because if you started here and did a double truck and then this one would be covered and that would become an orphan page, and so I always make a new set of pages first and then make the double truck because sometimes it tries to put the double truck in between two pages and then they get separated and then adds a blank page here I'm here to fill some were so now I can take an image and just drag it over the top of this and alice there's my double truck yes if I want to do it I just a text only page do I just open a blank page and can I type on it don't have s o here's here's my text on lee paige click on here and go to text pages and then there's that there's your text page so now it's a text only page and that's where you copy and paste from your a word processor right into there and then you can stylized it after that right and also can you put boulders round pitches? No, I don't understand why I don't understand why they have not allowed us to do key line borders around the pictures the on ly borders you can dio is you can click on an image and you can choose the uh here where the creative options and then suddenly you can have like dirty borders. But I mean that's like I think that was last decade that we did that so I'm not sure why we're still in that mode when all we want is a key line so anyway, so yeah you you you can create artistic ones but you can't make key line ones and believe me, I've looked for ways to to do that, it's, the only thing I can think of doing is if you wanted that united's go the print module because the print module, kentucky line borders so you, khun design whatever you want for that pains or set of pages exported and then re imported and then throw it in here, but that doesn't make any sense, so they really should have the option of just clicking on key line borders. So it's surprising to me. Sometimes designers just don't think, you know, they're they're they're coding, and they just they've already done it here. All they have to do is take that little piece of code, throw it here, and it will be done, but they just don't, I don't know. Yeah, what are the advantages of exporting as a pdf versus a j pick or vice versa? The advantages of exporting pdf is that it's a it's altogether? And so you can send it someone toe? Look at it, you know I mean, like if I was sending this to a client to approve it, they could look at the pdf as a book, whereas if I said it's j pegs, it would just be like that, and they could get out of order and whatever the pdf will hold it together as a book where as yeah, if I'm sending it to someone other than blurb to print it, I want jay pegs so they're separated and then they can send them to them and they could put him and if I'm sending it to blur, we'll just keep the blur of option and send it to blood. What about image qualities that identical? Well, yeah that's pretty much identical because the pdf is using jpeg compression anyway, so that's not the case. I don't want to mislead you into thinking that I think that pds and j pegs are equal, they're not, but the j a pdf can use whatever kind of compression you want it to. And so if you're using jape ed compression in your pdf which this is they are equal, if you were in in design and you're making a pdf out of it, you could choose not to have any compression on it and then it would be a far superior product to a j reagan would like to know. Is there a specific way to calibrate for blur, color, print profile or anything like that? Um, well, remember that when you send a blurb there's not a profile option to choose because they are it's already inside of the blurb software slash light room software like they've got that covered, so what I would suggest is just make sure your monitors calibrated so that you're seeing true color and everything will be fine as long as you're calibrated to that. If you want to see what it will look like on their paper, then you would want to calibrate that paper. And remember, we talked about x right yesterday. You could calibrate the whole process, you know you could you could send something the blurb having printed send it back to you, calibrate that paper and there might be, and I've never really asked about this, but there might be a profile at border that you could download and then stick it into your system so that then when you're in the developed module and you turn on soft proofing, you could then choose they are you could you could choose the that specific profile the same way I can choose velvet fine art paper to see what it looks like on it. If if you could find a blurb paper profile, which they may have, I don't know if I've I've never checked, but chances are there's a profile out there that would handle that get it imported into light room and that remember that goes in your light room preferences folder go to the show light room, presets, folder and that's right here, these colored profiles that's where you could make those accessible. I'm nick pen tell photography asked, am I missing something? It looks like he's making a full album and calling it a proof book. How is this different from pat packaging? A full album is part of the package. I was also curious about what kind of do offer blurb this is it basically the same thing without the image numbers for your final? So? So when I make a proof book, I'm I'm in the process of teaching clients that's, that's, my goal, and so when I make a proof book, I'm making a book at the beginning and then proof book at the end, and so I take fifty or so pictures that I think of the best, and I make them big so that the client falls in love with those and then when they go to the back and start flipping through and looking for the images they like, they already know which ones they like because they saw the big and so they're more likely to choose the images that I've already showed them, and I've also showed it to him in a slide show, and I've also, you know, showed them at the wedding and, you know, so they've had a lot of instances where those images are being presented to them in beautiful ways, so that then when they get to selecting images, they're more likely to choose the images I want them to choose, rather than just random other images. And so for me, it's an experience, and I can't tell you how important this thiss proof book concept is to gaining clients. I I have gotten three wedding clients in the last three years, simply it off of a proof book on an airplane I can track three of my wedding clients in the last three years to a to specifically a mother having approved book on an airplane so that's where that's went gold, right? And but if it was a crappy little proof book that just had four ups, I don't think I would have gotten the same kind of excitement about it, but the mother has this proof book that's so beautiful that when she opens it up, the person next to him doesn't c little little proof books, they see a big, glorious picture and they go whole wow, that's awesome! And no one's ever seen it? I don't know why no one has ever seen because I've talked about it a lot of different places, and people just don't get around to doing it, but I promise if you get around to doing it and you create a proof book that includes an experience so they and it doesn't have to be designed like this. I don't design my proof books to this extent, I just do one big picture per page, and then I put the proofs at the end, but by doing that, you create an experience to enjoying the images in a proof book that's huge so that then that is it because the the album doesn't go around album sits on your coffee table and sits there free decades, and maybe twenty, people see it in a decade that's not good advertising for you, but does nothing for you. I mean, I make albums for clients because it's important, you've got to it's a lost leader really, you don't. You spend a lot of time and effort and expense on making an album because the client expects you to have one as an option. That's why you make an album if the client doesn't want an album, I'm happy not to provide an album, but I will always provide proof book because the proof book is advertisement. The proof book goes with the bride toe work and sits on her desk and people come by and see it and it's really pretty, so they get to flip through it right it's advertisement for me. And it's comfort for them because they don't have to be in a line scrolling around through images and they could give it to their mom and mom could take it on the airplane and she can flip through it and then the blaney next to her who's daughter is getting married says all that's amazing who's who shut that long and then all of a sudden they call me and say, hey, I saw this book thing that's it looked like an album but it was like the proof book or whatever and I can we come see you and then when they get their hand on one they go oh this yeah this is what I saw you know and they're all excited about it there's they're more excited about the proof book than they are about the album and does it cannibalize album sales? I don't care because albums are a really big money maker there are there's something that you provided the client as a service I love that shift in thinking too because I feel like when we hear the word proof book we think work you know we're like proof book sounds like just not a fun, enjoyable part of the process, but if you're making it beautiful and an experience that so that's a cool on people over the book and I'm just giving him a floppy itt's a uh it's a it's a soft bound proved book but they had excited about it because so beautiful it really is a beautiful thing to look through its fun and I'll even take my proof book and write in it so they see that it's a working thing that you know it's not something to be reverence it's something toe work with and it's very useful tool but it's beautiful cool a couple more questions we had a couple questions about resolution one from greg d and one from one of our regulars sam cox and the question is on a couple of images in my book I'm getting an exclamation mark message that my image may not print well because of resolution what can I do about that other than deleting the images or you can shrink the image so for instance, if if you get one that's and I don't have any here because I'm shooting that the mark three so all of them are bigger than the book but if I if I had that so let's say I had that exclamation point and and we have one here see that exclamation point there that explanation point says that it's offline or it can be found so that's another reason you would get the exclamation point but if that exclamation point was telling me that it was not a high enough resolution, I could shrink the image and just keep shrinking the image or choose like because I've had times where I've been making a book for like my family and we have like old snapshots from little point and shoots and so I'll have all these big beautiful images and then I'll and then I'll throw an image of a kid into the book as a full bleed because I think it look good as a full bleed and it goes for, you know, warning you shot this with a crappy little pointe shoe is too and so then I'll just go in here and choose a smaller lay out something like this and then it will be fine I just got to get the photos smaller and just make it a small photo on a page and then it's fine, so if you're running into that it's just a matter of changing and of course this is because it's offline so that that's not going to disappear until we find the image but for instance, this image if I was yeah there see there's the exclamation point because I zoomed in so much it's like you know it you're out of your mind that's what it ought to say that it ought to say guess what, you're out of your mind you know you're you're off, so but if you just shrink it they're so now it sees that as a acceptable resolution for printing on def, you are here if you have your set up like that and by the way, on a full bleed that's pretty cool, right? You can just kind of um if let's say that's how I want it to look and it's too soon it's still too big I'm still trying to make it too big and that exclamation point is there then I can simply choose a different layout and shrink it down and just keep shrinking until it that disappears. Otherwise, the only other thing you could do is on one software makes a software called perfect perfect resize used to be genuine fractals you could export it to their plug in, increase the resolution so that it's bigger and better and then have it come right backto light room so that's available so then you'd have a regular and a large version of that photo and then just take the large version of the photo and so you've got it here and you've got the two photos side by side, take the large version of the photo and replace it. So speaking of perfect last one last question him iverson from north dakota ass if you ever put advertisements in your proof books or if you do any sort of marketing since that does get advertisements for like ford yeah, I like the idea put like advertising, jewelry and whatever I don't put advertising, but my logo is always on the spine and my logo's a it says platt photography so my logo is a non logo it's just it's just my name but platt photography's on the spine of the book and it's on the back page of the book and it's on the back of the book so yes I would yeah I think I'm thinking the virus and was thinking more along the lines of your business for you could get some things going absolutely we're always yeah yeah call the offices of dewey cheatham and how thank you yeah I would always put your logo on any kind of book that you make where I don't put my logo and I put my logo on facebook images anytime put something up online right? I'm always doing that because you don't know where those they're going to go the one thing I don't put my logo on is prince even proof prince I just I have an aversion to that like I get really I think that's lame to get a picture that you want to use and it's got a logo on it I think it's just lame so lame if I'm putting a print at like a venue or something like that then I will put it because it's an advertisement for me and that's I'm giving him a free print in exchange for showing my logo but my client I'm not I'm not I'm not going to make them display my my logo whenever they shelving their prints I just think that's lame so if you're putting your logo on prince and big things that you're going to decline that's that's lame so just on books I feel you know, calling this course like how not to be lame ducks are lame and this is labor that's that's the next girl and say all things explained how to avoid being a lame ok, so that is that discussion any other questions on that let's go okay. All right, good. So by the way that I failed to mention that so I love designing a full bleed two page double truck and leaving white space over here I think that's fantastic. So you know that's a great option if you zoom all the way out it's gonna want to fill it that's the kind of the where it starts you can always zoom it down and now you've got the ability to shift it back fourth and just make sure that you don't hit the person in the gutter some and by the way, these these air fantastic for designing signature books because you've got all this nice white space over here that's a great way to do a signature book ok, so now we've made a proof book inside of the blur modu are the book module which is pretty much the blurb module and when we click send a blurb it's going to send it off uploaded to the internet you're going to choose a name for it and then once it's done then you'll get a notification from blurb that you have a book go online order as many books as you like and you can also if you haven't used blurb you can set up a store and then they will actually sell your book for you. So if it's fine art that you're doing, you could put a blur book up there and then advertise it on your store on your on your website when people go there and buy it they'll send you money so that's a that's an interesting thing to do to ok so that is making books inside of the book module let me double check and make sure that I have yes ok yes if you hit it the top make pdf does that then say savers pdf or something at the bottom? Well do you have t o saving? If you if you click on a pdf now its export the book is a pdf, but notice that if you're in blurb now it says send a blurb on this side and export pdf on this side so then you have both options, so if you export pdf the reason that you're doing export pdf is so that you can show it to the client before you send it but remember it's saved right here so you can work on it exported to pdf ship it off to your client and then you can go about your business in the next time they when they approve it you just come and double click that so if you're in the library mode you're working on other things and then they come back and say hey yeah we wantto order that book you just double click this book and you're there and then you hit order so your entire postproduction process once they approved is to double click this and click that and then you're you're on your way we have a lot of questions someone else neo rennes can you add borders to captions no you can't borders at all can no I'm sorry to bring it out it's a it's a source of I'm disappointed with and I don't understand why that is not an option because it is if you go into the print module and you I've got you know it doesn't aiken look there's a key line right there it's there I can do it but then when I go to the book module no key lines nothing there have to do the silly nineties dirty border instead jered uh dl ash it would like you teo define baseline please baseline is basically you when you start when you have text you have text that starts at a certain point and then when you increase the baseline that's it's instead of the baseline being where the text starts here, if you increase the baseline, the text will start here instead of here. Even though the the text area is like this, the bass line will be here. So, for instance, if you were to take a, uh, like he wanted to make a, uh, to the tenth power but, you know, like five to the tenth power, then you would have to increase the baseline to get that to move up. Hi superscript superscript there that's what that's called and then you can decrease it too. And so the texas going to start lower, higher based on because that's, the where the line for the the text is going to be. And you noticed when I was working on that text on I wonder if it's still there I had changed the baseline, and so this text delete that so you could see how that texas all wonky. So the text was all wonky because on the baseline for the one line was lower, and so it it pulls it down. So it's, just a way of of determining where the text is going to start and fall inside of, you know, a line of tax so that's that's it awesome! We have another clarification question from lavon ag what is patting me? And I see what it does just curious about the definition and can you line elliptically all of these terms like turning and patting and letting come from the old typesetting thing? So letting is specifically they take bars of lead and stick them in between the lines and so that's called leading and so like turning is just the space, the little pieces of lead in between the you know, so they take a piece of of lead and put it in between, but I don't know why they call it current and I don't remember I actually took in college back when we still did, like photo grab your stuff and whatever I took a printing class and I don't remember why what the history behind the name curving was, but I'm sure you can google it on ben patting is just that you would literally pad the sides with, you know, shove it in and you put these pads so it's just patting is just giving you a pad a space around so turning patting, letting the and those all come from the old printing technologies they just they just stuck so awesome! Well, one more question from multi us u five seven one can the book be created from different catalogs in light room? Images from different catalogs well are you know what? That's a good question because no you can't but there is a way to deal with that and the way to deal with that would be simply to do this and I'm going to show you this because I think it's a good discussion if iowa's using my working catalog and I advocate always using working catalog so that you have multiple jobs in there but let's say I'm making a retrospective on my work for the year and I know I want to bring some stuff in actually if I were making a retrospect for the year I just go to my portfolio catalog and make a book but that aside let's say I was making a book for a client and I had shot three or four jobs throughout the year for them that's a good instance so if that was the case I would open up a new catalog or the working catalog and curtain lee in and I would just go back to the file import from another catalog and then I would go to my job dr where that clients work exists probably it's on the archive of that point and then I would just go look for instances where I've shot for them so for instance I could say ok, I want to bring in this photo shoot and I owe it doesn't cattle I want I want to bring in this photo should see what I want to bring in I want to bring in I'm looking for something I can bring in let's say there I could bring this him ok? So I want to bring something in and so I I I wantto pull this in because I already have, like, two jobs from that kid and I want to add another job, pull it in from my archive so I would just go to that job and click on the catalog and hit choose and that's going to bring that job into this current job are this current catalog so now I have all so I could just keep doing that with all the jobs that I want to work on, pull him in and then I would build my book, and then once I was done building my book, I could export the book, get it done, and then I would remove all those jobs from the catalogue, so that's really, really hopeful that would be the way to accomplish that, but but you can't just make a cattle and can't make a book and you have to be able to open the catalog and if you open this catalog and you have a book in it and then you close it, you open this one the book's not in it so that's why you have to combine them which is why you have that ability to import from another catalog so that you can combine catalogs together. In fact, I have a wedding client who then had a baby. And then I shot a lot of baby portrait's for him. And so at one point I had a engagement portrait session, a wedding and then a trip to rome because they did their wedding and arizona. And then they went to rome and have their wedding blessed by the pope. And so we went to rome with them and did portrait of their wedding portrait right after that. And then they had, like, for baby portrait of the first year, you know, with a warrant. And so I had all this stuff. And so one point, I just and they wanted some books and stuff. And so at one point, I just literally combined everything I've ever done to them and one catalog and saved it as a big catalog in a specific years so that I would be able to find it all right living having to go from one to the other.
