a low Internet and welcome to Creativelive. My name is Chemical Osterman. My name is Jim Kotecki, and we are your hosts here today for shooting and selling hybrid photography with Mr Will Crockett. This is our third day of this course, and the energy levels are still super high. If you have been with us for the past couple of days, Crockett Will is just full of energy, and it's been a ton of fun. Yeah, he sings and makes up his own songs on Definitely Like It's You could put Probably run your toaster off of him if you plugged in, sings and dances and all right while we are have been talking a lot about E cards, business cards, e products and we talking Portrait's. This has been a really fun and different class, and we thought it would be fine here in our pre show. ces that whether it's Mom's, whether it is business folks are using mobile devices. And so it's definitely coming far away. Mr. Jim Kotecki here has been a graphic designer for 20 years and eso We thought it would be fun for Jim to talk about the history of the business. Okay, well, Kenna and you guys out there, you know, the business card. Really? You know, it's all about a couple of different things. It's about it's about presenting yourself, and it's about first impressions. Okay, so the business card actually came from a concept in the early 17th century where aristocrats and prosperous people, when they were going to come to a town, they would send ahead pre printed cards, and they were about the size of a business card, our sorry playing card, and they would send 20 or 30 of them and they'd be posted around the town. Now, from the 17th century will cut to the 19th century, where people like Freud or doctors or social people. Before you went to a house, you would send ahead again a small card with just your name on it and a little bit you know, something about yourself, and then the woman of the house would have a silver tray. So when you arrived at the house, you cut, you'd come in and you'd give the woman a card, and all the visitors cards would be on that train. Now, if the hostess walked away, it was very, very bad. If you looked at anybody else's card, it was very private information. So if you were caught doing that, you'd get in big trouble now. Way talked about history. The business card. I thought you were gonna start like Okay, 1950 like this. Well, I did a little bit of research, right? And you know what? There is a lot of etiquette around the business card. A lot of etiquette, you know, in that time during the 19th. But as we moved into the 20th century that some of that etiquette state and some of it sort of went to the wayside. But some things that I learned were that you should never keep your business cards loose. You should always put them into some sort of a container and always present them in the best manner possible. You also never want right on a business card. This is not really This is not a note pad. This is this is a presentation, you know, it's just defaces it sort of. And I bet you didn't know this. Kenna, you never want to hand your business card to anyone with your left hand. I don't know why, but it's just very bad etiquette. It's always It's like it's almost like a handshake, so you always do it with your right hand and also are in Japan with yes, with the two hands. Um, and there's actually a lot of etiquette around the Japanese business card that I didn't get a chance to research. But if people want to go online, that's kind of where I got my information. You can you can definitely find it there now. Yeah, we're talking about Yeah, going into the 19 twenties, thirties and forties and fifties, you definitely would see representation of our classic business card. It would usually be a serif or sans serif typeface. So either how does that mean for people who don't know you are not graphic design. So the San serif means without Serra's a serif is those little squiggly things at the edge at the ends of each individual letter. So a typeface that is a traditional serif would be like times and traditional Sand Saref without those would be Helvetica. So it's a little bit more blocking, and you would definitely in those times find both sides. And then, as logos became prevalent in our our country, those we get added onto the business card, then, of course, I bet the history of the logo is probably another think. So? I think so. I think so. But then, you know, as modern day printing became more advanced, we went into, like, what's called four color so C m y que. And then you'll hear things that people say zero on four or four on four. And since there are four colors, that means they're printing all four colors on both sides, so 4/4 would mean it's printed in full color on both sides, and that's usually done on on off center off set printer 0/4 means there's just stuff on on one side. Now. My particular business card is a 4/4, so it has full color on it, has full color on one side and then full color on the other side, and the way I design my card would be that I would hand it to somebody and it would have the word hello on it. So that was sort of the how I would do it. The Internet. But now I know to do it with my right hand and not my left hand. And that's, you know, I think that stylistically business card, they're kind of getting back to more simplistic left photographic. And yeah, And then, of course, it's going into the you know, it's It's all digital. It's all moving in that direction, for sure. So we don't kill trees for many different reasons. Many different reasons. Well, that was certainly fun. The history of the business card and now moving to the maternal version. I love it. You are a fabulous designer. I love that you are multitalented here, so we have a few more minutes. I wanted to talk Teoh to fabulous studio audience members who have been also full of energy and getting in there and trying things out during this course. And today guys is all about selling. So in the past two days we learned about the shooting about the why about the what, But now it's kind of the how how to implement this into your business. And I wanted to talk to Will reintroduce reintroduced each of you. But then Chris in particular you do branding work on. So I would love to hear what some of your biggest challenges are When you think about selling this product to your clients. How how do you think about pitching it? What are you worried about? What we're gonna learn today, right? I guess my, uh, issue guests coming a little bit from a non professional photographer is how to pitch this as a new product. Hiree photography. And I think that could be sore, a blessing and a curse and that its brand new. So, uh, you know, customers don't exactly know what it's all about, but at the same time, that provides me an avenue to help educate and help become more of a trusted adviser and say, this is cutting edge. Let me help you. So that's what I'm kind of excited about us. How to teach and educate my clients as to how do you best utilize this this great marketing tool? I think that is a huge thing you just touched upon is how to educate your clients. And I think when it comes to sales and we see this in across many, many different classes in terms of whenever we're talking about sales is educating your clients early and often. Because especially like you said, it was something that is so new that people might not know just again the what and the why. And so that'll be. That'll be wonderful things today, and it's really difficult because that conversation Chris, you know, way we do the same kind of thing. It changes every day because the technology is changing every day and you'll sell educated client and then two weeks later, technology changes and you like and they're like, Well, you told me this. Well, you know, it's also setting them up for success in yourself by saying I was started off with this may change in a couple weeks, but here's where things air today. Great point, Lorenzo. Tell us about what you're looking forward to learning. I'm looking forward to learning how to get this particular product out to many different service providers in my community, whether it's, you know, real estate agents, personal trainers, coaches. But then the only other side of that. I mean, there are so many sports teams that are in the area. I live in getting to getting in front of moms and dads and showing Hey, you know, you guys have a team of kids and everybody is having some type of mobile device that you want to send to grand parents or aunts, uncles all across the country. So here's an opportunity to do that and at the same time, with Rather, you know, I mean, you're not buying business cards in the morning, since now you're you know you can you can get him out just as fast as you could give out a regular business card. So it's gonna be It is gonna be a lot of studying and a lot of tweaking and peaking different things and trying toe get it to work. Fantastic. Well again, coming from different places in terms of the different usability for thes e products. So I am excited
