Working with Different Photographers

we've got the models and we're gonna set them up with Matthew and see how they work with him. So, Matthew, who are you playing right now? Well, I'm different. Not Matthew at the moment on, uh, I've heard a lot of horror stories from girls from different models about things that happened on different shoots. I'm sure you wanna. You have tons of stories about toppers being different ways. So it's right now. Yeah. And And I said to Matthew, we were talking It's important because everybody's got a personality. Doesn't mean it's, like, worse than the other. Especially We deal with artists. Some are very community of summer, European summer, just different. And you have to learn how to work with every style of photographer. You're gonna have a lot of young ones, ones that are grumpy, that complain a lot. You're gonna have ones that are overly complimentary to you and how to not get taken. You have to just learn how to take what you're given. Okay, So that's what we're gonna dio. So you have ...

first. All right. Okay. But, Matthew, you have four personalities for what is the name of this guy? Uh, we'll call him a guy with a camera? Yeah, I do not like but that will do. Come. Come sit right there. Right there. Show me something. Show me. Show me. I do not like. Show me. I do not like. Show me. Come on, Show May. Yes. Yes. Come forward. Come there There Do not move. Do not move! They're Do not move! Walla Walla! I love this. I love this. Do not move. Do not move When I tell you, Do not move. Do not move! Nice there. That look at me. Look at me. That's good. Head up. Head up there. That that's nice right there. Then there strong the stronger Look at me. Look at me. Just that I love this. I love I love this right there. Get your help. Longer. Longer, longer. There they hold that. Hold that. No card. Hold on, hold on. As a model, she's probably like what the heck? This guy is driving me cuckoo. Um I mean, what are you feeling like? I'm about ready to giggle at any moment, and I Yeah, so, yeah, like I think for you would be great to just take a deep breath. You're not gonna change him. You're not supposed to do that to me, is you've gotta work with that. And to do what he's asking you to do shouldn't have to repeat himself over and over. He says not to move, Don't move. But that maybe just means don't move away from the marking. That doesn't mean that he doesn't want you to maybe move around yourself. So, yeah, you've gotta still be varied, because if not, it's gonna read office, being that you're afraid and it's intimidating. He's got a really eccentric personality and you need to work with that sound with his personality. And he said, Show me. So show him emotions show him. But he says he doesn't like it, didn't click it and move to the next until he starts liking it. You know, you shouldn't be like Would he want me to dio What are you looking for exactly? Does this work? No. You're there to prove to him that you know what he wants and you're gonna give it to him. So I think we should do Another girl can ask the question. Yes. House is acting. Is he pretty on? I started on his game with that one? Yeah. I mean, it's Truman happens. You're gonna have all sorts of person. This is an artistic feel. This is an artistic world full of eccentrics and interesting people. And that's what makes it great. So you have to learn how to work with everything. You know, I get bored easily. For me, that would be like I'm gonna show this sucker. Like I mean, I don't be afraid with my experience. Okay, coming in. And this is like maybe your first test shot with the photographer might be a little overwhelming. So it's great that Matthew can have fun with this and play other photographers because you will be put up against different eccentrics and all right, girls. God knows. Girl models talk. I've heard so many stories from Model was talking about their previous shoots and you hear all the time. So as photographer you got No. Whatever you do, the girl's gonna talk about that. That's our reputation. Start also with photographers and the models. So we are ready for next model, right? Next model that Why don't you go ahead? Here's our next month. Gorgeous. Great. Oh, my God. You are so hot. You was so hot. What's your name? Katie. Oh, my God. Katie, come right here for me right there. You're just hot. You're so hot. So I just want you to show your best. Look your best. Look, OK? Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Just just like that. Your boyfriend. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. That's good right there. Oh, that's hot. Nice. Just like that. Just like that. He brought it. Showed around for me a little bit more. Yeah. Oh, I love that. You are so few. It's a lot. That's nice. That's nice. You do anything tonight? I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. You just just so hot. You're so hot. I guess part I'm going to tonight and we should We should definitely go together. So just think about it. But I'm free tonight to also. And if you're hungry, we can go and get a bite to eat. And just right there, right there. Hold on. Oh, this is so cool. You were gonna work, girl. That's nice. Can show is with the el Something else. Oh, I love it. I love it. I love it. I love it there. Oh, that's nice. Your hair is so beautiful. I mean, you like Kate Moss here for me? This is nice. Best right there. That's nice. And, like, give me, like, a sexy growl Look like a sexy growl. Growl for me. Yeah, that's that. I love that. All us that's so hot that happened. It's happened. Photographers hit on girls. I mean, some like it. I find it complimentary, but I'm not gonna go home with them. So, you know, be that hot chick that he wants you to be. And I feel that you're not giving enough to him. You're using too much of how hot he is making you feel, and you've gotta still be moving your face. Your lips need to be a little more relaxed. You need to open and closed them a little bit, if you can. Changing your eyes a little bit. You know, there's a great thing photographers taught me looking down, counting 123 Look up. And then he'll take that shot. Right. Then. That's great for beauty. To its a great beauty trick. Flipping your hair around, moving, doing things. You know, if I were to come in and I was stressed like you I would be, You know, moving this around doing my face. I wouldn't. So be It's like a dance. I'm sure that would be the same person. Can you? Yeah. And mind you, I'm not in a bathing suit. I'm miked up, So you feel hot. So I'm coming in, and, uh, you be what you were Oh, my God. Got you, honey. I thought you were so hot for so long. So long. Yeah, right there. Right there. Just so you hot in person in your pictures face, like, Wow. Thank you. Wow. I mean, wow. Thank you, Jesus. That's right. There. Right there. Right there. Johanna. Oh, my I've never had a girl this beautiful in my studio before. Ever. Ever. I mean that. Wow. I mean that. I mean, I've never had a hold on. Hold on. Oh, hey, baby. Yeah. You know I love you too. Okay. I had a meeting right now. Can I call you back? All right. My sister, uh, you were so Oh, yeah. Do that. Do that. Do that. Do that. That's good. That's good. That's Oh, my camera cannot keep up with this. This is so hot. I have never Wow. Yes, yes. That's how she could have taken a swimsuit. You want to control of it? You don't know what you want, but you're that's you're there to not figure it out. You just gotta You gotta just let go. You thank you and give even through all that other stuff. You can get great shots playing with your like, suit. I mean, you're doing you know, you're a lot of times you don't know what they're gonna select. So maybe I'm doing this. And the photographer. The agency loved that. That goes in my book. I didn't select that. I much feel more comfortable. See myself like this or like that? No, you've got to give different variety. Okay, so you know, with that suit, it's boring. It's a simple black suit. How can you make it look sexier and come alive? So? So Matthew, Justin in the chat room says you definitely need to do a cameo in Hollywood. Your acting skills are on point, my friend. Okay. The next girl and this photographer. I do hear about this one. A lot as well. The one doing next with this guy do right now. And what's his name. He's quite quiet. Guy. I think this is personality. Three. Got it. Yeah. Yeah. Mm. We've got it. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. They there are those stalkers that who could be amazing but won't say much at all. We'll give you much direction at all. Then you have some who are overly directing you all the time. So you wanna when you have talker who doesn't say much at all and just grunts or I had no direction. I find that to be a lot of young photographers will be that way. Artistic photographers. And you still have to do what you would normally do coming in with an eccentric, But at any time if there's no problem If you were to say to him, Are you getting what you need? And he should say something to you. Okay. Um, he really should be saying it's great or I'm not really sure. Let's try it this way. I'm not feeling it. I don't like this outfit on you. Um, and he would make that change. So? So as a model, if you're not getting that, can you start talking more to the Cuban at for Just don't make it so technical. Because then it takes It just makes you look like you don't know what you're doing. You can ask him once. How'm I doing? What do you need for me? He should be expressing it in a sentence. And that's it. And you move on. If you need to ask for it again a few hours later, you can do that. But to be breaking down the whole day, If I'm then it shows that you don't know what you're doing. You're not comfortable and you're confused. And you don't want the photographer to think that you're that way. Because then he could call the agency, complain about you, and that runs into a whole. Another problem that you gave me a girl that doesn't know or she's really to Green. Don't send her out on this job yet. She doesn't know what she's doing because photographers talk and they'll remember. You know the girl Waas Uh, not on point. So what I thought was interesting. There was that rave in. Matthew was not pressing the shutter and I could see Raven me like Do I stay in this position until he does Or do I start moving? When do I start moving? And so were you. Would you be the way for her that I like? Okay, so take that silence as I should move. Yeah, move. And I feel it. I mean, you can read off people's energy. When you walk into a room, you can feel you've got to be in tune with the energy. You've got to be in tune with the photographer, and once again it's important. Study the style of the photographer. If you know he's shooting a ton of indie magazines and he's artistic, go that direction. If you're not getting that, if he's not getting that from you, helps he should. You should ask him is Am I doing normally what you want? Is this what you're quick and then move on? And each of these three first, now that we've done just now, they could all be amazing photographers and get great shots is just their personality. So, as a model, you'll meet all types of photographers. Yeah, but it's important to this is really from new models because if I'm a professional model and I know Matthew Jordan Smith, the agency should let me know. By the way, you're working with Matthew. He likes X y Z, and this is what you should be doing. He doesn't have time for this. He doesn't like when you do this. He wants this. So as a professional coming in, I know that. I think this girl this tall this short all that girls usually know before they even come to see the photographer. Yeah, And if you're coming in for the first time, just testing the photographer should be a little lenient with the girl. Recognizing can be frustrating working with girls who don't know and to be patient. Because it's a lot of pressure on them to, you know, to understand this whole world of modeling and how it all works. One more question. Yes. When they're changing poses, how long do they hold? Each pose is at a one count. Is there? That's it. All of you know, I asked sometimes for talking about how many frames are you getting in that clique? Because I don't know, technical term, but you could be getting It depends on the model. Like with your aunt and I were shooting, I can almost feel her rhythm. I'm shooting when I see a great shot and getting that shot other girls to be very slow and they're moving and not sure it takes a moment to find the rhythm. Once we find it on the same page, it's different with each girl. So you just know her style that she's gonna hold that post for one second? Yeah, yeah, I'm a fast like I mean, and I think it's because I've been doing it for a while and I hope that when you book me, you know that I'm gonna be on point. I'm doing it. I want to get the next look done. I'm gonna want to do what the photographer wants. I'm not going to be questioning. Hopefully, I'm coming in knowing what the set up ISS and the layout of the day. I'm thinking now about some situations where I shot girls, and it's like a nervous energy and they're moving too fast. Yeah, you also don't want to do that. You won't do that because you want to show you can get the shot because there's photographers. There's every cycle time they can only shoot so fast with a stroke Yeah, different. And what a shooting outside. You can hear the flash. You're gonna hear that be if you outside. There's no strobe move faster because there's no, like recycle time on the soccer should tell the model. Oh, came over those slower or a little faster, right? And when I hear that click click in the light, I know from experience how maney you just it just comes with Time comes with time, and I've never had a photographer say you're rushing. So that's great, because I also don't want to do that because I'm listening and hearing the clicks and that, and they'll let me know. Hey, I need a minute t change my card out or, you know, and you just wait. And then sometimes for models, that's a chance for you. Toe. Get your energy back just because he's changing equipment and lining and stuff. It's not a time for you to decompress and to lose your, um, focus for the day. So here's another photographer now that I should do. I hear this one a lot from girls, even on jobs she not accept. How you doing? Pleasure meeting. You saying right there for me It looks really good on you like this a lot. Can you put the strap a little bit as we shoot And also with your hands. Bring my in your face as we should live itm or just make this look great. Okay, That's nice. That's nice. You know, I kind of like that, but it feels fake. Make it more real for me. Make it. Really Hold on. Okay. You ready? What? You know. Do you like this outfit? Yeah. How much fun. Like it. Listen some more and some more. That feels, like opposed to me. I don't want polls. I won't be very riel. Show me. Very. Really. Show me. Really? Like I feel like you wouldn't do that on the beach. I want feel like you want a beach. Like I feel that's not really, really should be. Really? Should be really okay. I still don't believe that I want I want to believe it when I'm shooting you. I won't believe it. I want a and C and look at this like, oh, she's on the beach. Oh, she's in. She's in Miami. Oh, she's in Bora Bora. I want to really feel it. Show me. I want to feel it. Are you ready? I'm waiting to feel it. I'm waiting to feel it some. I'm waiting on you, but I want to feel it. I want to feel it. Okay. Are you ready? Okay. Show me. I feel like nothing was happening here. And you know, I want some direction from you. I'm trying trying to feel it. I don't feel like we have I don't know. I don't think we have. We have chemistry. I feel like I don't know. I don't know. I feel like something's Something's not right. And you need to show me something. So let's try it again. Start all over again. Start all over again. Great time for you. Kind of as a model is toe take a deep breath in and out. It's not about the outfit. If you wanted it changed, it could change. You need Teoh. Let's show. Okay. Yeah, so I'll come in. And so let's imagine you also here in a bathing suit. Okay, so, in a bathing suit. So you want Can you just show me what it feels like to be on a beach? The winds in your hair? I went you know, start getting down. Oh, I like that. I like that. You know, like that. That's it that I couldn't imagine on a beach. This I can't imagine on a beach. Oh, that's that's what I'm looking for. You lay my day. You've made my day. That is that. Hold it right there. That's that's I'm talking about Knife. Do you feel the air? Do you feel it? Do you feel it? I feel you smell the ocean. Smell that I want. That's what I want. Wow. See, this is why you make the big bucks. Oh, this is gonna make our books so hot. That's it. Watch out. Watch out! That's cool. Oh, Oh, oh, this is nice. Nice them on the beach. I'm on the beach. Oh, come back to me to give that. That's nice. That's nice. That's nice. So I'm moving fast. Normally, I would stay a little bit longer opposed, but just to get the you know the lesson across. So I went. I like a lot of that stuff she was doing. You want to just keep moving? You want to find that moment and get in in the role that you're playing but that pose of holding that polls like she was doing us imposes before and a lot of girls who a brand new do this where they will hold that polls. And he's telling me, and I'm like and I don't know if it's instinctual for your body dressed to free, you know, be that actress for him. Whatever he wants you to be, you're on the beach. Get into the location. Like I said with the horses, I was terrified of horses. You know, if you need, like, a second, like hair, just just digest. Look around where you're at, what you're working with, whether it be a piece of jewelry, we're sand on the beach. You need to as a model, come in already learning how to work with that. So but you are playing a role. So where you to do to get yourself in that place? Go there. You gotta think about, you know, actually being in a place thing with your boyfriend, nothing but the music, but do whatever it takes to get in that place and give a great shot. But that is usually not a poles. Like you've seen, um, on Facebook. Yeah, Yeah, definitely. Okay. Yeah, This is our chance. And then you're gonna shoot with Matthew as Matthew and with different looks and different themes for the shoot, that's important how to work with other models. And that sounds funny because we say that most models don't actually hang out with each other. But you need to learn how to work with a male model. Another female model. Ah, group shot. Um, it's gonna come up. Okay. It's gonna happen. So it's important that you girls learn how to not overshadow the other model or feel that you're hotter than her. Let's wet her out of the shot there, you know? No, it's about, um giving what's expected of you. Okay. Can I just say, out of five personalities that I've seen from you, I like Matthew Jordan Smith the best way. Love exaggerating, of course. Being over the top on all those people that bad, but personality for sure. Well, speaking of over the top, can you talk? Teoh? Where is the line drawn when a photographer is just too creepy and you need to you just can't You just can't do it. Is that Does that happen? Yeah, it's happened? It's happened. I mean, I like to get complimented. What? I'm honest said I want I want to be built up as a model. Okay. If you're gonna be silent, I want you to like my hair and makeup. I want you to think I'm sexy or I want you to think I look natural. I mean, it's great if you tell me that. So that that kind of breaks the ice for the girls who haven't had a lot of experience hitting on. But to say, you know Hey, do you want Teoh? You look really hot. Can I take you to dinner after this? I mean, obviously that can come across as a pick up line, you know? So use your judgment. Some models like to be picked up, some don't. So I'm not getting into that whole gray area, you know, and I don't want to touch on that. Do whatever you want to do in your personal life. When it comes to working, just make girls feel comfortable. If you want to make the girls feel special, even better. Onda lot of these top models coming in, they're gonna want you to tell them they're amazing because they have been built up in their head or they're having a hard day. They traveled all over the place. They may feel horrible. They may feel bloated. They may feel depressed or whatever Set the set. The, um set them up, built him up. It's great, you know, It's not gonna make the girl egotistical. It's not gonna walk away. It's a bit of a you know, they understand, but it's great. I think it goes back to what we've been talking about a lot about that energy, though, like either a woman can feel. It's a creepy energy vs and enthusiastic and team playing some trees like BP Energy. True, some girls liked, you know, being told. I think you're amazing. I want to take you home. I mean, some don't you know? But just be professional. I think it's what it is. It's a business. Making a business for one of the one of the photographers, he went over and moved one piece of hair and in a lot of our photography workshops on posing specifically, we often get asked by photographers, Is it OK to touch the model? And so, from your perspective, what do. You ain't a with I don't mind it. Like if Matthew were to come over with and touch me to move that hair. I don't know that my hair's touching my face. Or that because I'm so in the zone with Matthew. I want someone to come and fix my top. If my nipple is about to pop out, I don't feel my nipple is gonna pop out. But it's important that someone comes and helps me fix that. Absolutely, absolutely. I think it's great. Great. Okay, question for Matthew. This is from Jeremy Adam Barton. Are there different model personalities as well? If so, what are they? And how do you work with the more difficult model personalities? Different personalities for models, absolutely models of people in there like this. If you're in an office, you have 20 people. You've got 20 personalities, and you have the model who's crazy. And over the top one who's shy and reserved, you'll have it all. So we are. We're dealing with a lot of personalities, not just the model, but with the hair and makeup and stylists. You have one creative group in a room, and each person usually has a strong personality. So Darfur is usually juggling all that to make it work. So getting back to the thing about even touching the models would have you. There are times when I go over now move a hair. It's like a styling thing. I, like the stylist, do that, Um, as I'm shooting, I like my crew always go in and make adjustments so I can say Focus on the girl. I want to focus on the model, but my hair persons right here going in and making small change on the hair make persons going in, making, making small adjustments. And we're all here as a group making that shot work. That's how I like to work. A body is different. People like to have everyone off to the side. I don't want a by making comments from shooting. I want to be myself photographer talking to the model in pulling, spinning out. And then the energy is all based on our team. Making the shot work is a model would be really awesome for photographers, Teoh say. Okay, everybody. I'm shooting her no IPhone pictures right now. No, coming up to her. And because right when I'm in my zone and someone's coming up to me and running away. And then they're they're tweeting or facebooking the makeup look of the hair. It's I've already starting to lose my focus with what Matthew needs for me. She's being pulled on. Do it before she gets on. If the photos were allowed to do it before Hey, can I take your picture before you get on the satyrs? Toku. But not while I'm shooting. And that happens all the time. Or someone will come over Matthews shoulder. Oh, I got to get you wanna in my my book. And so I'm like, Who am I looking at looking at the person with the IPhone? Who, sorry? Or am I looking at Matthew? So that's a great way to make the model fel comfortable. Um, it's just too much attention, and it has got to be a time to do before or after set. And in terms of that IPhone protocol, um, who is it that when you go onto a set that you asked, is it OK to take IPhone photos? OK, this is an important question. I'm going to discuss this on toward the end. Mistakes made you're shooting for a magazine, you should not be taking pictures at all. Okay, you're doing a test. It's commissioned by the agency. Asked the photographer. It's probably OK to do something on the side. Um, sometimes the photographer doesn't like it, and we'll say, No, I don't want you to do it because they don't want their image to be ruined by a filter from instagram or by a filter on your own application on your IPhone. Because it ruins it ruins their vision or their shot you don't want. And you also don't want to kill the spread for an editorial submission. If you guys air working on an amazing artistic project and the photographer and the stylist and that team has come together and you just want to show your boyfriend an amazing shot and you want your mom and aunt everyone to see that you are modelling, you're working and this is what you're doing. It's killing the spread because we don't know who was circulating that picture. Um, an editor would be pissed. You don't see you know Kate Moss on set for Vogue unless it's, you know, posting it. Unless it's for something special. or vote really wants to emphasize something they're doing that day with Kate Moss. They will post it. If they want to do it, let them do it. It's not you is the model or the hair makeup team should not be doing that, Okay, because people steal ideas, people kill the spread. And I've had a photographer say We're joking on the side. They said the chocolates that Yeah, OK, you all can take a picture, Whatever. And then, as soon as I posted it on Facebook, the public tell her to take it down the photo. I don't want them to know. You know the style. I heard it was okay. Now I don't even do it unless it's a test and it's fun, I asked, Is it OK? Fine. But I don't post ever anymore from a magazine or yeah, they're now magazines and in clients who have clauses where it's written by posts. No, they can not get paid or or worse. So it's a big deal, and it looks so much better when you get the actual physical image from the photographer. You know it's gonna look better on your instagram shot, Um and then and I'm saying that, you know, protesting. You guys should just be communicating and asking the photographer, Can I post this? And most likely for magazines? It's not a good idea or a campaign or a commercial. Everybody wants to post right away in the instant. Look what I did today and that's great in real life, but not want to shoot all the time. OK, have a question from Mary from Costa Rica. Is it part of the job of the model to try and make a shy? Are not so confident photographer more comfortable by directing herself? Or should she just wait and see if the photographer eventually warms up? Um, I think you should just try and Can you ask the questions? Confuse. Okay, I just I get what she's saying. The question here to change the photog cover he's probably set in his ways. Who's doing it? You just need to communicate with him. I mean, the question was, if it's not not a confident photographer, maybe a new photographer of that shire not confident, and he's working with an experienced model. Do you direct yourself, or do you wait for the guitar for the warm up and start directing you. Um, I had to write myself your director. So unless he's saying no, no, don't do that or he's not fine. But yeah, he's in new And that we secure about how to shoot five better if she drugged herself and get great shots. He might be a very good photographer, was just new and nervous. But as she's this great stuff, he'll shoot images and get better with time. Yeah, personally, for me. I'd love it if a model dressed girls do but Brandy Rose don't great, thank you. So a quick question, that is, from Julia K. Is it normal for photographer to ask a model? Was there a flash or not during the shoot? Yeah, is that Is that okay? That's fine. I think that's not a big deal. If a top has a lot of strobes going off and his eye is to the camera, you can't see if I'm shooting. Let's say the flash does not go off. I just turned it off. So let's say I'm shooting. You wanna my eyes here the entire time? I'm like, Oh, I'm so into her. I meant to tell that that's going off if there's crew around like a hair and make it like Oh, Matthew, Lights not going off, We could have blown a fuse or something. So I think that's totally fine if the model says, Oh, Matthew, Lights not going off because you can't tell when your eyes here you can't tell is going on because it flashes. This goes black that instant. So I think so. OK, have a question from Lisa N Y. C. And this is kind of when you dropped to the ground and, you know, change that up for the beach. She scenes. So she asked, Should the model sitting lay like You wanna just did on her own without asking the photographer first? I usually have to adjust my lights when we moved from standing to laying. And is that something that you would ask her? Would you just take it upon yourself? I do it and they say dull were not. I gotta move stuff from. I've never, ever had an issue with that. If I'm moving around the photographer. Okay, hold on one second. I just got a way to stop it down there and say, No, I'm not ready for you wait. I've never had that happen. She does that were shooting, and she drops down like she was. And I like what she's doing, which is, like, really fast. And in an instant takes, you know, two seconds just that light down. And that could keep her in that moment and shoot. Because I actually like that. When she did that, yes, I first started out. Where did you I get inspiration. Um, I think it was studying. I got inspiration, my poses, studying the way I looked from, um, testing and how I tested and how I looked. Um, and also reading. I mean, I'm a fashion magazine junkie. I don't copy people's poses, because obviously, I don't even have time to reference that when I'm in front of, you know, going to the magazines. It's like osmosis. It just comes, you know, Um, and it'll happen organically, like, now do you have, um it just an inspiration for a new posters comes out of you. You don't comes out and I'm inspired by the styling. I'm inspired by the photographer and the work I've seen. He stunned. I'm inspired by the location. I'm inspired by the hair and the makeup. It's like osmosis. It all just comes in. You know? It's silent. Acting is what it is. You're like an actress. Yeah, absolutely.

Tbh, this course should be mandatory viewing for all new models. A very insightful review of how it is to be a model, what is expected, what you can expect, how the industry works, what kind of modelling there is, how to deal with different types of photographers, catwalk, etc. Everything they should know but often need to learn the hard way. All masterfully presented by Yoanna House and Matthew Jordan Smith. Henrik "Imaginara" Bengtsson Sweden
